I too think the name *Polygonum plebejum* R.Br.must have been a mistake.
While putting the query, I had that feeling. But good number of sites
showed up this name. I was wondering there could be some story behind this
error.

I did not expect epithets to have gained entries in English dictionaries;
In fact, I have never found in any search results until now for any genera
/ epithets.

I found *plebejum* is a proper epithet used in many other scientific names.
Thus had become curious.
