Anyone, Got pserver running just fine for a remote user thanks to Larry Jones, Eric Siegerman, and Chris Metcalf. My apologies for the trouble. Note: it never occurred to me that www.gnu.org would have the current software and an outdated manual. Things became clear, cool, and (most important of all) working once Chris' notes came across and I thought to check the www.cvshome.org version of the manual.
