This morning my front end servers were deferring mail because
the mupdate server was not accepting connections. The only error that I found was

We are running a current version of cyrus (see below) with sendmail 8.13.3
on a Sun Solaris 9 box. When we try to send out mass mailings to our about
4 customers sendmail gets unexpected messages from the lmtp-daemon and
rejects some messages:

You can use squirrelmail + avelsieve http://www.squirrelmail.org or
Horde +IMP + INGO http://www.horde.org i have been using them for months
(years for squirrel) and they work very well.
