The (slightly inaccurate) comment in my imapd.conf file is illustrative:
defaultdomain: mailadmin.com
## ACHTUNG! The default domain must match the host name
my hosts file contained the following entry:
10.0.0.2mailadmin.com mailadmin
I changed it to
10.0.0.2
Now everything seems to have come back up but the replication still has

A) Saslauthd is running as
saslauthd -m /var/run/saslauthd -a pam -r
B) Username in ldap
for primary domain
uid=userid
for virtual domain

Now when my /etc/hosts does not have
