Kinda looks like a port probe. telnet to the pop3s port and then use the telnet escape key to quit the connection. If you'd like to submit a patch to reduce the level of logging for these errors to something a little more sane (like DEBUG), I'm sure it would be accepted through Bugzilla.

It appears to me that sync'd messages get an mtime of the INTERNALDATE in 2.3.9 (and then improved in 2.3.10). Prior to that release, mtime is probably when the message was sync'd, at a guess. In your case, the subsequent message dates are probably just reflecting the speed of replication

I'd probably use imtest to connect, get the PID of the server process that I'm connected to, and then attach to that process with ktrace (or whatever) with timestamps enabled. Then I'd select the mailbox -- this is assuming that mutt is only issuing a select when it says "Selecting INBOX".
