Years ago (prior to using acetone), I performed a test of 100% acetone
on plastic fuel line, fuel rail gaskets and internal fuel injector
gaskets. I found that acetone will swell gaskets, but *does not*
degrade them.
4 oz per 10 gallons is the upper limit on acetone use in gasoline
(1:320). Using more than that will degrade fuel economy. I did further
testing using 1:160. This double-strength ratio did swell gaskets very
slightly, I'd estimate less than 5%.
I've used 3-4 oz per 10 gallons now for three years with only positive
effects.
In the final analysis, I would say it's not only safe to run acetone up
to 4 oz per gallon, but if you have a slightly leaky fuel delivery
system due to old gaskets, that it may very well swell them and seal the
leaks.
AFA screens are concerned, I know there is one company that makes intake
manifold screens that supposedly increase torque. However, if you are
planning on putting a screen setup immediately downstream of your
carburetor, you might want to consult this first

AND ONE LAST TIME: 7oz of xylene or toluene will act as an octane
booster, giving you the benefits of mothballs w/o the danger.
AFA mothballs (naphthalene) in your tank are concerned...

So if you'd rather risk using them instead of xylene or toluene - If
your engine starts knocking and pinging because you've carboned it
up... Don't say nobody told you so.

Remember, the acetone is not used as a fuel but as a surface tension
release to the gasoline. Everything I've read about mothballs in all
the searches online that I've performed do state that they increase
MPG. I'm happy with 4 balls to a gallon. That's 1 ball per quart,
which doesn't seem excessive. I used some of my mothball gasoline
with the 4 balls to 1 gallon mixture in my lawn mower and dang! I did

my yard before going dry. The important thing here is experimentation

the results would be the same. Reduced surface tension makes for
easier vaporization in the carb/intake manifold. My next big
experiment is placing a piece of wire (not plastic) window screen
between the carb and intake manifold. From what I've read, the
gasoline, in passing through the wire screen mesh, will break up into
smaller droplets than what I'm getting now without the screen. My
only concern is that the screen may reduce airflow a bit. Once
installed, I'll do a 1 gallon real-time road test and check for any
increased/decreased mileage. Finally, I had said that the tail gate
in the up position on a pickup truck decreases air flow and increases
drag. The tail gate should be down (or install a net, as you've

NEVER USE ACETONE in an engine...it will mess up the seals, gaskets,
etc...it has been outlawed in the Phillipines...refer to the recent news
article on KeelyNet about it DESTROYING engines.
Toluene, yes...
Mothballs, YES if you don't use too many...I have been using 1:4 in my
1996 Ranger for nearly 4 months now....was getting from 18-22mpg, with
mothballs, I get around 30-35mpg!!! And it runs better than ever, has
more power and I can climb the mountains on my weekly trips to nearby
towns. Been to Goodyear twice and they said the motor is in very good
condition for a 1996.
The problem is some people use WAY TOO MANY mothballs....the original
recommendation was 1 ball for 4 gallons...thats what I've been using.
They will carbonize the engine if you use too many and require repairs.
I think you have that wrong about the tailgate DOWN degrading
mileage..its running your pickup with the tailgate UP that produces the
resistance to lower your mpg...
Thats why they have the NET gate that lets air pass through it, but
tonneau cover is even better. Living in central Mexico, I just load it
up with Mexicans wanting a lift and let them be the airfoil....<lol>....

Also try 7-10 ounces of toluene or xylene and advancing the timing
(toluene is used commercially as an octane booster, xylene is very
similar, and both are 50-75% cheaper if you add them in yourself as
opposed to paying for the 'pre-blended' mix at the pump).
Try the Mobil 15k synthetic oil. You change it less and it costs
the same as running cheapo oil.
Add 4 oz of Torco MZP engine assembly lube to your gearbox.
Also, try a chin spoiler. This will block air from your undercarriage.
Do all that and you'll probably have a 33MPG 59 Edsel.

PS running your truck with the tailgate down degrades MPGs. Running
a tonneau cover (even a 1/2 cover from the cab back) increases MPGs.
