InterMapper Talk Readers:

There have been many recent messages on the list requesting improvements in
InterMapper. These are particularly helpful at this time because we are
currently working on the next release. A week ago, I sent this note to the
current set of testers:

--- Letter sent to InterMapper test list ---

A year ago, we announced our intention to minimize the development of the
Macintosh Traditional version of InterMapper. You can read that note in the
InterMapper-Talk archives, at:

   http://www.mail-archive.com/intermapper-talk@list.dartware.com/msg01811.html

When we started the development of InterMapper 4.5, we realized that continuing
to develop the Traditional version would delay its release by a significant
amount of time. We have chosen instead to address the shortcomings of the
current Java GUI, and consequently, we have decided not to release a Traditional
version of InterMapper 4.5. The reasons are:

- As described in the IM-Talk note from last June, it's too expensive for
us to
develop both GUIs.

- The next version will incorporate the major missing features of Traditional.
The Device List was added in InterMapper 4.4; Responsibilities and Network Info
will be in version 4.5. Although a new Get Info window would provide a nicer
GUI, there's nothing in it that you can't do with the Console/Remote client
today.

- There are things that would be prohibitively expensive to bring to the
Traditional GUI (such as removing i18n problems). It would be a ton of
engineering to make the legacy Mac GUI support unicode. We would basically have
to rewrite the GUI. Fortunately, we've already done that -- in Java. :)

Although I know that the Traditional has a long tradition, we intend for
InterMapper 4.5 to provide you with a considerably better overall experience. As
testers, we look to you to let us know where we need to make improvements.
Thanks again for your support of InterMapper.

--- end of quote ---

The recent discussions on this list have shown that it's important to have a
Device Info window similar to the Cmd-I window in Traditional. We have added
this to the list of features in the next version.

I would ask the list to enumerate the other important facilities that
Traditional provides that are not yet available in the InterMapper Remote or
Console application. I won't promise that they can all be added, but we will
consider all the features you suggest.

Thanks, as always, for your interest and enthusiasm for InterMapper.
