Google just announced the final assignments for their Summer of Code
program for this year.

This should really be fixed similar to the iconv //IGNORE flag - so
that bad characters are just replaced with '?'
Maybe using iconv is a way to go in your scenario?

To follow-up on this, a patch was just posted in the bug for this issue. It
appears that the issue started with revision 1.30 to
