We invite Papers/Chapters, Case Reflections, Campaigning and Activism
Strategies for an Edited Book to follow on from the Brighton
University mid-November 2021 conference; open to all.

The 11th of January 2022 marked the 20th anniversary of the opening
of the prison at Guantánamo Bay. 779 men (and boys) have been held
there by the U.S. military since it opened, and about 39 are still
captive, mostly without charge or trial. Those who have been charged
face trials in the much-criticized US military commission trial
system.

The edited book will ask, among other questions: How did the prison
at Guantánamo Bay come to exist, and why is it still open? Why aren’t
those responsible for violating prisoners’ fundamental human rights
being held accountable? What part did the UK and other governments
play in enabling both Guantánamo and the larger US rendition
programme and “black sites”?

It will bring together academics (both established and early career),
policy researchers, investigative journalists, activists, and
practitioners, whether conference participants or not. Contributions
by authors who were not able to attend the conference
(https://blogs.brighton.ac.uk/guantanamo20yearsafter/) are strongly
encouraged.

The editors are envisioning a mix of traditional academic
contributions (socio-legal studies; philosophy; political sciences,
international relations, sociology, critical media studies, social
anthropology, human geography). Some will be in the form of
traditional “papers”; some in the form of “conversation” among two
or more people; and some will be reflections on campaigning and
activism.

The book is to be published late in 2022 as an international critical
resource forum for all those active and interested in reviewing,
discussing, debating and learning about Guantánamo’s origins and its
history over the last 20 years, whilst demanding accountability for
the human rights abuses inflicted there in particular, and proposing
legal and political paths towards its final closure and the remedies
that will still be needed when that is done. This timely publication
will showcase research, legal feasibility studies and arguments (of a
scholarly and practitioner level), case studies and projects which
aim to demonstrate how Guantánamo evolved as a system as much as a
place, and what to do about it.

Tentative Table of Contents:

We plan to assemble 20 to 30 single- and
inter-/cross-/multi-disciplinary contributions and to include
academic reflections, reviews, case studies, outputs of research
projects/studies, as well as reflections and evaluations of
campaigning and activism strategies.

Indicative contents (though proposals are not limited to these):

- Guantánamo and the “Rule of Law” in the USA, as well as elsewhere
[“Extraordinary Renditions”, “Black Hole” sites, Torture]
- Philosophical issues around Guantánamo
- Critical Perspectives on the media’s role in Guantánamo and its
  legitimation: working towards towards accountability
- Detainee Resistance in Guantánamo
- Guantánamo and Ethnicity
- Military Commissions and Torture
- Guantánamo: The Future
- Activism and Accountability

We are in early discussion with prospective publishers.

Expressions of interest to contribute to the book, consisting of a
300 word abstract with all contact details from the authors, should
be sent, by end of day on Saturday 26th March, to Sara Birch at:
s.e.bi...@brighton.ac.uk

The editors will give feedback on the submitted abstracts by Thursday
14th April.

Papers should be in English, and of approximately 7.000 words
including (Harvard) references, in Times Roman 12 and single-spaced.
More specific formal details will be shared upon the acceptance of
abstracts.
