A 100-150 watt soldering iron should work OK at that distance, assuming
your extension cords are #14 or larger. There would be loss of about
4-5 volts, which wouldn't be enough to matter.

I have tried just about everything to repair antennas but lately I
have resorted to a small pocket sized (under 3 inches long) butane
torch that somehow doesn't leak at cold temperatures like several
more expensive torches and soldering irons have. Clean the wires,

Don't forget the DX test. I plan to be live with

Thanks Bruce. I'll pick up the extra extention cords. It is a soldering
gun not an iron. But with a drop of 4-5 volts, that isn't enough of a
drop to do anything. I thought the drop may be a lot more. Great.
I have a bad splice somewhere and the signal goes on and down with a
bad connection..
A little additional info direct from the source.

George,
With our wind on the coast, open torches don't excite me. That is why
the idea of a long extention cord is better, plus running 140w in the

Greetings from Michigan,
I will have to review my recording but I believe I
heard, however faintly, parts of the Morse Code and
Sweep tones commencing at about 12:04 am.
My thanks to Powell Way and Jim Pogue for conducting
and arranging this DX test.

But the hiss is much louder on 710 than 690 or 730, so either they were off or
the 710 Spanish was local strength, or WLW WGN were much weaker. Oh well, no
IBOC problems expected for the DX test, just dozens of co-channel QRMers. Will
give it a try, with semi-rare WPTF coming in, who knows?
SRF-59 SRF-M37V both getting it 10 PM CST. A big thanks to WSCR for turning
off the IBOC! I started these logs about Christmas on SRF-M37V have 311
heard. Spanish from SE on 710 probably Cuba. Thanks WLW WGN for no IBOC! 73,

Patrick,
If you need to solder wire in cold weather, use a propane torch. A torch is
best suited to uninsulated stranded copper wire, as the heat will cause the
insulation on typical zip cord extension wire to melt back on either side
of the spice - but it will deliver enough heat to make a
