[IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 11-28

2016-11-28 Thread d1028gary
The dawn session was unusual in having a large number of Asian signals from
diverse areas, with very few of them having anything better than ghostly audio.
In the predawn darkness at 1430 only 747-JOIB, the 1053-Jammer and 1566-HLAZ
had fair audio, but 594, 693, 738, 774, 828, 972, 1044, 1134, 1503, 1575 and
1593 all were at threshold levels. By 1515 the high band received a modest
sunrise enhancement boost with 1566-HLAZ's Chinese service coming up to a good
level, while 1503-JOUK, 1575-VOA and 1593-CNR! each had their moments of fair
audio. By contrast the low and middle band Asians didn't seem to go anywhere
except deeper into the noise. Overall the session would have been another
clunker except for the unusual variety of ghostly signals.

Dave seemed to have permanently left the hobby, despite some reports that
he might return to the hobby. I've heard he's devoted his time to his
daughter's ballet career. I'd hate to say this if I'm wrong, but didn't
Cedric pass away? 73,...Walt

Re: [IRCA] -23F Below TP Report 11/28/16

2016-11-28 Thread Walter Salmaniw
Paul, I have to give you my cold weather DX story. For others who have
heard it, my apologies. Takes we back to the late 80s/or very early 90s.
January in Victoria. We had had a very cold spell of - 15 to - 20 deg C
for a couple of weeks. Very unusual for Victoria. About a foot of snow on
the ground. I ventured out to our favourite DX sites at Jordan River which
is about 1 1/2 outside of Victoria, many km from anyone. To access our DX
site, one left the roadway and drove a few hundred meters down an old
logging road. Snow covered of course! After setting up my antennas, I
proceeded to DX for the next several days, alone. Using my NRD 535 D (or
possibly Kenwood R5000) plugged into the cigarette lighter. Toyota Previa
van. Comfortable. No heat at all. I lived fully clothed and DX'd from a
winter sleeping bag. I did find that every time nature called, it would
take me an hour or two to warm up again. It was that cold!DX was
excellent, especially to Africa in our local mornings on 60 meters (I was
into SW DXing in those days). Anyway, towards the end of my time out
there, I decided to turn the engine on to recharge the battery and warm up
a bit. No go. All I got was the dreaded "click-click-click-click".
What to do? I had no extra battery. After a while, I thought that if I'd
warm up the battery, it would give me enough juice to turn over the
starter. I removed the battery, built a little tee-pee over top of it
with a space blanket, and built a fire. Well, things didn't go my way.
The space blanket quickly caught fire, and threatened to spread to my
vehicle! Ouch. Stomped that one out quickly. Back to square one. I
did have booster cables. I trod back to the road, which might see a
handful of vehicles/hour only. Well a truck did come along, and
hallelujah, the driver stopped and believed my story about needing a boost,
a 1/4 mile off the road. He drove down the logging road, and kindly jumped
me, much to my relief. Had no one stopped, I have no idea what I would
have done. No cellphones in those days, and besides, even if there was,
there was certainly no cell service there. That's what we did for DX!
Now, I could tell you about the time Vlad Titarev and I drove out to Rose
Spit on Haida Gwaii for really off the grid MW DXing, during storm force
winds. That was really something. Perhaps Vlad can share that story
sometime! 73, Walt Salmaniw

[IRCA] Alberta TPs for 28 November 2016

2016-11-28 Thread Nigel Pimblett
Not a super exciting morning, but at least there was some TP
audio, which hasn't always been the case this past week.

747	JOIB	Sapporo, JAPAN Could make out the time pips at 1300, but that
was about it. That was more than the other Japanese managed though.

792	4RN	Brisbane, AUSTRALIA	'Just there' with ABC news fanfare at 1300.
Very slightly better at 1400.

1116	4BC	Brisbane, AUSTRALIA	First noted with time pips at 1300, then
into news by a woman. In and out over the next 90 minutes with short
peaks to fair level.

1575	VOA	THAILAND	No trace of audio until 1442 when I heard woman in SE
Asian language for a couple of minutes.

[IRCA] TP 28 Nov Victoria version

2016-11-28 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
A bit more entertaining around sunrise this morning, and perhaps not
quite so much earlier. HLAZ was at its strongest around 1700UT
today, no longer really qualifying for sunrise enhancement (coffee
break enhancement perhaps?)

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker,
at least briefly):

594 JOAK man in Japanese 1533UT
972 HLCA man in Korean 1507UT
1566 HLAZ Christmas carols, man in Korean 1651-3UT, more carols a
little weaker, 1702UT, then slow fade out, and pretty much gone by 1710UT

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it
understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

774 JOUB woman in Japanese, then man 1501UT //828
828 JOBB as above //above

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be understood by a native speaker:

612 4QR woman in DU English 1504UT
738 lively pop music assumed Tahiti, 1321UT
747 JOIB NHK pips, woman in Japanese 1500U
1593 CNR1 man and woman in Chinese //6125, briefly at this level 1547UT

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be
guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in
talk or music)

567 JOIK man talking //594 1502UT
1179 man and woman talking 1509UT Japanese inflection
1242 pop music 1523UT
1287 man talking, Japanese inflection 1518UT

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary" audio (either undermodulated or
ravaged by splatter) lots of near audio here

621 855 891 945 954 1089 1098 1107 1134 1206 1314 1323 1422

Paul, I'm surprised no one has asked but why not run a coax from your
comfortable home to the antenna. It doesn't look very far, and should be
an easy thing to do. You could set it up and either leave the ALA 1530 up,
or put it up and bring it back in after the session. There's really no
need to freeze your bu*ns off! 73,...Walt

I've not been home to check in a long time. WPHM has stroung null to the south,

Re: [IRCA] Chinese Speakers?

2016-11-28 Thread Chris Kadlec
Thanks Colin, Paul directed me to Keith Perron too (noting that your Coffee
Crew site designed his website, so I'm guessing you had him in mind), so
I'll send him an e-mail as well. I hope anyone watching this can throw in
their two cents if they know anyone or have better Chinese skills than I do.
The guys on the Chinese-language forums are still making my head spin and my
Chinese isn't good enough to handle their lack of clear help.

So here's what I'm looking for at the moment:

I have a station that comes in when local Seoul jammers are off on 684. It
always comes in at 30dBu, just enough above the noise floor to record it
with minimal interference. It likes to play the same endless music before
the TOH, do the time pips, and then go into a never-ending blabber, which in
some of my recordings is all exact the same (same song, same blabber) one
MP3 to the next. They do not do a typical TOH ID, except for maybe one of my
clips that has it earlier in the evening. I need just a SINGLE ID from these
45 minutes or so of audio as it's all one station. A local mention,
something I can use!!! For all I know, a clue may be in the very first clip.
A lot of this audio can just be skipped through as opposed to listening to
ALL of it. They're just my raw audio clips as I don't know where there may
be a clue and don't want to edit something out as I've done before.

I believe it's 684 Mudanjiang (Heilongjiang). I thought I heard a few
mentions of "... Economic Radio" in there and have sworn I heard Mudanjiang
mentions, but no solid proof. There's also a generic health broadcast ad for
Jilin and Yanbian in one of those clips, but it's a national broadcast, not
locally-produced content. The signal is predictably, best aimed north...

If anyone can help, it would be appreciated. I'm working on a one-hour

Re: [IRCA] ABC 6NM 1215khz Northam, Western Australia

2016-11-28 Thread Theo
Well, I took another listen, and agree with Chuck on the weather bit
being reference to general conditions across South Australia and NSW for
the four-day cricket test match between Australia and South Africa in
Adelaide.

As a Kiwi-Canadian, I'd be hard-pressed to pin that accent down
definitively as Aussie, although his pronunciation of "cricket" just
following the weather reference does tend to be towards "creeket" rather
than the average NZ flat vowel "crucket"... but it really isn't all
that, erm, pronounced. And there are so many variations in speech in
both countries...

Time-wise, it's still nigh-on impossible to have been Newstalk ZB from
Kaikohe. Now that I've gotten my Alaskan zone figured out (could've
sworn it was UT minus 10 -- oh well), 9.37 am/1837 UT Friday would've
been 7.37 am NZDT Sat 26 Nov, and sunrise was ~6.04 am/1704 UT. The Far
North is far enough west (~173 degrees) to be a bit later than Auckland
or the strict meridian, and the sun angle at that latitude (~35.4 S)
just over three weeks before the summer solstice wouldn't help.

As for 4HI, it appears in a lot of the Macquarie Network lists (such as
local 7-11 pm "Nights With Steve Price" originating at 2GB and also
carried by 4BC). The Macquarie list contradicts what 4BC's site sez it
carries until 4.30 am: Macquarie claims "Luke Bona Australia Overnight"
which comes out of 2UE -- 4BC has a whole bunch of shows that seem to
run overnight, though one podcast dated 26 Nov sticks out:

He says "till 5 am" but that would've been Sydney time, 4 am in Brissie
I know, unnecessary details, but I mention it to show the websites
aren't reliable!

However, your reception was at 4.37 am QT so we're no further ahead.
It's a pity they (Macquarie/2GB/4BC/4HI) don't have program grids.

There's an email address though for Geoff Speed at 4HI:

These cricket matches are important to the cricket loving nations. It
seems possible that this is not a station from SA but rather a report being
carried on a station elsewhere. Paul says ZB says it is not them. On what

Gary / Paul -

I don't think this is a true weather forecast with highs / lows/ etc. Rather, I
think it is a reference to the weather expected for a sporting match. I believe
they are talking about the expected conditions for the international cricket
matches in Adelaide.

These cricket matches are important to the cricket loving nations. It seems
possible that this is not a station from SA but rather a report being carried
on a station elsewhere. Paul says ZB says it is not them. On what basis? Did
they listen to a recording? If not, what were they asked? If the question was
"did you have an Australian weather forecast?" perhaps the responder wouldn't
know of the reference to weather in a cricket report.

Paul,

I'm sorry that you couldn't come up with a match by listening to the ABC
archive recording for that time slot in the Perth area LR network at 0200
Western Australian time.

But I note that your recording has a weather report for South Australia and New
South Wales. One of the stations listed in Australia on that frequency is in
New South Wales-- a 350 watt country music station in Bowral (near Sydney).
Since your recording doesn't match the Western Australian LR network archive of
ABC the 350w Bowral station would presumably be a possibility. I agree with
Walt that posting your recording link on the Real DX site would be a good idea,
since Australian DXers in the Sydney area could possibly identify the voice of
the announcer, if in fact your recording is from that 350 watt Bowral country
music station.

[IRCA] Chinese Speakers?

2016-11-28 Thread Chris Kadlec
Hi guys,

I'm sure I've known some of you for years and haven't spoken as I've been more
on the FM (and social media) side of things over the years, but it's nice to
see the familiar names on here again. I thought a few of you were dead but I
guess you're doing all your DX talk via e-mail instead.

I'm going to assume there are still no Chinese speakers out there (Mandarin,
not Cantonese)? I know that's been a real challenge for DXers over the years,
and I certainly feel that pain. If there are, pass the contact info to me
please.

I've got a station that has been making me tear my hair out - and those of you
who know me know that I shave my head to start with!!! I have 45 minutes of
recordings of this one station over the past year and nobody (so far) will
bother to take a few moments to listen for a single clue, ID, local ad,
something... I have an unlimited supply of Chinese DXers on the Leowood forums,
but their lack of help, even when I use Chinese, makes me want to jump off a
cliff. I have a reliable non-Chinese DXer living in China who has helped well
in the past, but his reply only took a few months. I don't have that time right
now as I'm trying to finish an audio bandscan project and this one station is
holding it up.

With that being said, if any of you have Chinese or Korean stations (or assumed
ones), especially East Asia, that are UNID, feel free to send them to me. I can
easily pick apart IDs, as long as they're the standard TOH ID and not oddball
ones buried in plain speech where the station plays the same song prior to the
TOH, then goes into the exact same endless babble for five minutes with no
obvious ID (my current situation). I'd be happy to help if I'm able and have 12
hours of edited recordings of the East Asia band currently, many with TOH time
pips, which could be used to compare (and actually helped someone in the past
week as well). :)

One theory I find plausible is one that a radio friend in NSW brought up

4HI was broadcasting a replay of a sports talk show, hence the mentions of
cricket an suchforth.

Plausible? Considering 4HI rebroadcasts an hour long breakfast show at 1pm,
I find this idea very possible.

West doesn't matter. Darkness is the same regardless of which direction you
want from your location.

If you'll take a look at the darkness / daylight picture in a program that
displays them for the entire world, I think you'll see darkness over the UK.

At 1830 (6:30 PM) at this time of year, it's way past sunset.
And as for when you have heard English stations: that's not proof. It might
make the scales tip away from England, but as I said, I see no real hard proof.
Remember until a week ago, you would have said Western Australia was highly
unlikely or impossible for you.

Its not Kix Country, that Grant Broadcasters network runs no long form
spech programming. I've confirmed that.

Where is the RealDX group?

A radio friend and I are theorizing it's 4HI's 1215 relay running a live
overnight networked talk program or a replay of an old sports show.

250 watts from Queensland, still not bad.
