Hmmm, grounding, in Alaska, in winter. Might be an interesting
exercise if one wanted a separate ground rod from household power
ground, now that I think about it

Find some 100% shielded 50 Ohm coax or use some RG6 quad shield.
Maybe you'll need a filter and / or choke also. With all the above,
I'm sure you can eliminate or greatly reduce the FM problem. You'll
live longer too.

With good grounding (as Walt says) it won't be a big antenna - just
a small quiet pipe conveying tons of delicious DX.

It gets into things 500 feet away... It'll sure as heck get into things 50
feet away acting as a big antenna.

2016-11-30 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
If I could, I'd invite you guys and see just how much this wouldn't work.
My DX spot is on the other side of the road.. I can't run coax, cable,
antenna, nothing across Tiger Freeway, which essentially runs the entire
length of the town, no way around it and you won't be able to dig anything
in the ground till may or so, if that.

(Kind of an ironic name for a road, considering where I live)

I'm going to look into some kind of heated tent idea.

[IRCA] TP 30 Nov Victoria version

2016-11-30 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
An odd morning, Asiatic until around 1400UT, though 774 was still
poking through after 1500UT, but after 1400UT, it was mostly DU,
including possible Fiji on 558 and a mystery on 531. Erratic fades,
particularly of the Asians.

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker,
at least briefly):

828 JOBB woman in Japanese and Chinese 1331UT //774

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it
understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

594 JOAK man in Japanese 1326UT
612 4QR peaking 1512UT "good morning Trevor" (call in show); somewhat
weaker on hour when fanfare heard and news

774 JOUB Chinese lessons, 1335UT
1053 Korean jammer 1324UT
1566 HLAZ man in Japanese 1322UT

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be understood by a native speaker:

747 JOIB Chinese lessons //774 1347UT
891 5AN mention of ABC news by man after fanfare 1430UT

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be
guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in
talk or music)

531 men talking 1510-12UT, interview? DU English inflection
558 island music and woman talking 1433UT, in for about 10 minutes; Fiji?
738 rhythmic pop music 1349UT
945 man and woman mumbling, Chinese inflection 1336UT
972 man talking, Korean maybe? 1321UT
1044 man and woman mumbling, possibly Japanese??? 1337UT

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary" audio (either undermodulated or
ravaged by splatter) lots of near audio here

567 702 837 873 1098 1116 1206 1278 1287 1323 1593

best wishes,

Unless there's cabinet radiation from the transmitters themselves (and
they're newish transmitters that shouldn't have that problem), shielded
coax is a wonderful thing. It keeps the RF output from the transmitters
going up to the antennas, and it can keep the RF from your remote
antenna going straight into your radio without picking up much of
anything from those FM transmitters.

If you were at an AM transmitter site, it might be a different story.
But I agree with Walt - it's worth the attempt!

[IRCA] SDRs and Windows (was Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 11-30)

2016-11-30 Thread Saul Chernos

While on topic of SDRs, I want to get in the game for AM and FM. What's holding me back is a decision about a computer. I want to dedicate a laptop to this (so it can be used when I'm working, and also with a view to it being an emergency backup for me at my Burnt River ON DX site in the event my work computer ever has issues).
I used to use a PC but switched to Mac (PacBook Pro) a few years ago and am much happier with it. I hate to buy a PC at this juncture. So a few questions:
  1) Is there anything really hot coming down the pipe in the next month or two that I should wait for?
  2) What am I best to get in way of an SDR that would work with Masc?
  3) If Mac is less advisable, will said SDR work off Windows for Mac?

It gets into things 500 feet away... It'll sure as heck get into things 50
feet away acting as a big antenna.

[IRCA] Alberta TPs for 30 November 2016

2016-11-30 Thread Nigel Pimblett
The last morning of November turned out to be one of the better
ones here, with more Asian audio than I've heard in quite a while.
Hopefully that's a sign for December.

594JOAKTokyo, JAPANWeak, but definitely woman in Japanese at
1355.

693JOABTokyo, JAPANSnippets of the English lesson noted at 1405.

747JOIBSapporo, JAPAN Woman talking during English lesson at 1412.

774JOUBAkita, JAPANMan and woman talking during language
lesson at 1409.

828JOBBOsaka, JAPANLanguage lesson, //774 etc at 1410.

11164BCBrisbane, AUSTRALIANothing earlier, but reached audio
at 1146 with man talking.

1566HLAZCheju, KOREAWoman in Chinese at 1444.

1575VOATHAILAND Presumed the one with traces of talk at 1445.

1593CNR1	CHINA Surprised to hear this one as the strongest TP of
the day with woman talking at 1445.

None of signals were overly strong, but I'll take what I can get given
recent conditions. Sunrise here is now 1500.

Re: [IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 11-30

2016-11-30 Thread Mark Connelly via IRCA
--- Begin Message ---
Paul's situation seems like a slam-dunk case for SDR usage.

Go out five to ten minutes before top-of-hour, record the whole band xx58-xx03,
and then you're back inside where it's warm by five past the hour.

Total time outside 10-15 minutes.

Whole dial worth of stuff to tune after-the-fact will keep you busy INDOORS for
several hours unless conditions are completely "naff."

Unless you want to drag an extra battery pack along, you want a receiver that
powers up right off the host laptop's USB.

The tent is still a good idea to moderate wind / temperature / precipitation
effects on gear and operator.

As I've said before I can't run coax from my DX spot to the house. It
would cross tiger freeway and pick up a bunch of RF and electrical noise
from the building.

I am going to eventually look into a heated tent of some kind

Wayne, thanks for your comments on my 1090 unID - I had a feeling it wasn't KMXA CO, which comes in from time to time. So I really appreciate your letting me know. I suspect Mexico. I'm not sure if these clips offer enough to determine which one.

Some unIDs - I'm hoping someone will have better ears than mine. Audio clips all posted online as MP3 at WTFDA Forums (precise links below):
1) 890: "The all new 890..."
2) 1150 oldies and jingle that I think is WEAQ.
Both at:   http://forums.wtfda.org/showthread.php?11085

3) 1230 — I hear what sounds like 103.5 in ID, then an announcement to call Russ on sales team at number sounding like 352-8016/8060. I am thinking this *might* be WSOK Savannah GA, which has a 103.5 relay – 1290 Savannah was strong at the time.
4) 960 — ABC News, then a national ad for Village Hearth Bagel, then promo for show with host name sounding like Dave Rownick / Ronette weekdays 3-6. Does this sound familiar to any of you? Then local weather via Weatherology with Derek Heit, then into or promoting Michael Savage.
Both at:  http://forums.wtfda.org/showthread.php?11060

5) Do either of these two Spanish clips sound like KMXA in Aurora CO? It's either that or a Mexican station.
At: http://forums.wtfda.org/showthread.php?11076
Any leads are greatly appreciated!

I'd think that coax and properly grounded at both ends wouldn't pick up
much noise. Anyway (culverts) etc to go under that highway? I do like you
heated tent idea! 73 KAZ

2016-11-30 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
As I've said before I can't run coax from my DX spot to the house. It
would cross tiger freeway and pick up a bunch of RF and electrical noise
from the building.

I am going to eventually look into a heated tent of some kind

CX here in IL remain worthless. Semi-AU boredom is endless. Not AU enough
to get good stuff south with little northern QRM. But too AU to get much
past Winnipeg towards the north. Too AU for decent TA cx etc.

Other than to test antennas I have little incentive to turn the radio on.

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 11-30

2016-11-30 Thread d1028gary
Conditions here weren't much better than Richard experienced in Oklahoma. A
small collection of weak carriers at peak dawn enhancement was the only sign of
Asian life this morning, without any audio showing up. At 1510 there were
ghostly carriers on 774, 828, 972, 1566 and 1593. The month is finishing up
just like it began-- in a very dreary state.
