Re: [IRCA] AFN AM Frequencies

2016-12-28 Thread Walter Salmaniw
I can confirm that I attempted to hear AFN Korean frequencies when I was in
Kyoto about 15 years ago. Despite very quiet electrical conditions, I
might have just barely heard a single frequency in the middle of the night,
but only tentatively. I recall being very surprised by this lack of
reception. 73, Walt

Re: [IRCA] AFN AM Frequencies

2016-12-28 Thread Patrick Martin
DX friends in Korea tell me that none of the Korean AFN stations are running a
full 5 KW, (As some are listed),as they just do not have that good a signal.
The towers are short and they just do not have much coverage. I tried for years
to nab one, but no luck here as yet. One Dxer said some years back, that he
never heard any when he was in Japan. Their ground system probably leaves a lot
to be desired. I have heard AFN-810, 648, and 1575 (Japan), as well as AFTRS
1550 (Now 810) and several AFRTS outlets from Taiwan in the 60s (1560-1570).

For NL: 740 sometimes audible u/CBL here... Also CBC on 540, 640, 990 though no
CBCs in many years.

For NS - Barry MCLarnon's site lists five. 1140 may be your best bet (I have not
aimed east in two years, LOL!). I have yet to hear 1350, 1420, 1450. Have only
heard 1270 once, though it was loud and alone at the time (strange).

Re: [IRCA] #2000 logged from Michigan

2016-12-28 Thread Neil Kazaross
Congrats Tim! Glad to see you've hit 2000! Glad to read of your great
successes using the antenna systems I suggest. I don't keep and exact count
here and also don't count call changes but a several years ago and pre
Perseus use an informal count had me slightly above 2000. I had the
benefits of two decades here and some great TA cx aided by Phased BOGs and
some channels with a couple of TA's logged on them. Perseus has been a
great help and I have been amazed at what I'd left on the table for logs
and the ID's one can pull out under the dominant under the dominant. I
think if I had to guess I've got about 2500 logged here in Barrington IL
over 22 years. You hitting 2000 since 2009 is remarkable.

As for DE two here in IL. 900 pre-sunset about 2:50 pm in Dec years ago
with Phased BOGs before other stuff faded in. 1290 dug out with a portable
when reported on day power for a 76ers game again years ago.

In WI I managed to log your 47 states in fewer that 20 sessions at the
superb QTH. Lake MI to my east makes the eastern stuff lots easier than
here in IL (except for DE). Putting some distance from Chicago makes the
more difficult (for Chicagoans) states like ID and NV reasonably easier
with Phased BOGs during good sunset skip times. But no DE even with many
tries since then and sometimes Phased BOGs aimed right at them. Checking
patterns for DE they have no stations that put much power this way. But
eventually you'll get them if you aim at them. I'd use Phased BOGs to
concentrate the beam and to minimize back end QRM.

As for AK, someday when cx are much better northerly (give it a couple more
years in the sunspot cycle) you'll have a chance with that D-KAZ north. If
sunrise, expect at least some carriers from Japan/Korea. The morning I had
Japan here I was stoked for AK and CK-750 didn't have any audio much of the
time or was off. But the program I copied I pinned down as Utah with WSB
phased out even though using Phased BOGs aimed 320 deg.

I still look for HI in DU cx. Many channels have Mexican QRM in the same
cx. 1500 seems a good shot but it seems low powered domestics are in there
near SR even if I can get rid of KSTP and aim the D-KAZ array beam WSW.
I've listened to many of Mark D's recordings from central MN at SR and I've
been able to confirm the SF Bay area Viet stn for him on 1500 but no trace
of HI. So this doesn't seem easy.

The PAL and AsiaWaves are far more accurate and cover that entire corner orf
the world, so why use individual lists?

Re: [IRCA] #2000 logged from Michigan

2016-12-28 Thread Nigel Pimblett
Congratulations on the accomplishment Tim. I hit the #2000 mark last
year, but it took me a lot longer. The Perseus has certainly helped
me push up the total too.
I hate to be negative, but I don't like your chances on AK at the
moment. Even here in Alberta I have yet to hear Alaska this season - a
far cry from the 2008-2010 period, where I was even beginning to
consider some AKs as regulars. Hoping those days will return in a
couple of years as we head for solar minimum. And if you're missing DE,
I really don't like my chances out here!

I had hopes of hitting #2000 before the year ended, and that goal was
accomplished yesterday afternoon when a faint 1490 KLGR was heard. I don't
count call changes and all logs between 530-1710 kHz have been from my same
suburban west Michigan location.

I started my logbook in 2009 with a "barefoot" DX-440 that was good for a
few hundred stations, but I wanted more! Enter the Quantum Loop, which
worked wonderfully with the DX-440, and netted me a few hundred more
stations including my first Trans-Atlantic station (1134 Croatia) and
several more TAs to follow, most of which are now history. Still wanting
more, but reaching the limit of the Q Loop, I knew it was time to go
bigger. I bought a 500 FT spool of wire and laid it on the ground in a
straight line, connected it to the DX-440, and started logging a whole new
mix of more distant stations. I learned more about BOGs and discovered how
Neil Kazaross was phasing two of them and soon went back to DX Tools and
purchased a Quantum Phaser to try it for myself.

It didn't take long to hit #1000 with this setup. At this point I'm
pushing the DX-440 to its limit, so I decided to try SDR and eventually
opted for the Perseus which I still use today. A reversible D-KAZ loop was
also added to the mix a few years ago.

Some obligatory stats since starting this adventure in 2009: 47 states
heard with AK, HI & DE still needed (keep dreaming). Most distant catch:
702 2BL Sydney @ 9,345 miles/15,039 km. Nearest unheard: WBCH @ just 59
miles! 169 graveyarders and 37 countries heard on MW. Recordings of some
of my more interesting catches are posted to YouTube here:

Happy New Year & Good DX,

Paul, notice the powers listed for the 3 low power Japanese AFN
transmitters on 1575. 300w, 1000w, and 1000w, which is more in line with

Re: [IRCA] #2000 logged from Michigan

2016-12-28 Thread Tim Tromp
Thanks Saul,

This may require me to setup a temporary BOG or loop outside aimed directly
at DE to cross this state off my list since neither antenna favor this
bearing at all. Rhode Island? Only one in the logbook and it's 630 WPRO.
Canadian provinces still needed: all the hard ones! Newfoundland, Nova
Scotia, NT, etc. I did snag New Brunswick via 540 just before CBGA1 went
silent.

Congratulations Tim.

Michigan is a very good place for DXing. I was born there and listened from
1972-1983. I heard DE on a DX test on 900 kHz. Unfortunately DX Tests are gone
now.

Hope to read about #2500 in the future.

1150 is indeed one good option for DE. 1410 also can get out, Tim, and you don't
have CKSL London ON in the way anymore there. DE 1330 also can do well in
semi-auroral cx here. Others heard are on 900, 1280, 1290, 1450, 1600. I'm about
500 miles out, so not that far. You're on the west side of MI, and from the ease
you get my targets from out west, and TPs (I have none here save hets), I can
well imagine you'll find DE a challenge. What have you heard from RI? What about
the Cdn provinces?

Congrats on your milestone, and in fairly short order to boot!

Congratulations on reaching this milestone in such a short period of time! I’ve
been MW DXing for over a decade, and haven’t come close to your success. It
proves the old adage that nothing beats “time between the headphones.”

Like many, I put too much emphasis on the technology. Always searching for a
better receiver, better antenna, better phaser. Far better to just use the
tools you have and get busy!

Thanks for being an inspiration.

about a dozen on AM.. mainly low pwoered 250-1KW signals, but AFN Okinawa
on 648 with 10kw and AFN Tokyo with 50kw on 810 are still possible in the US

I found this list of FN frequencies, which also incldues TV and FM.

http://media.myafn.dodmedia.osd.mil/docs/afn/AFN%20Pacific%20Frequencies%20as%20of%2026%20July%202016.docx

Some of the lower powered ones may be off the air, Chris KAdlec has
mentioned he hasn't heard Red Cloud in years.

Just thought this might help

Thanks Paul, 650 & 750 might be my best shot here during sunrise when these
channels open up towards the west. Someday maybe...

Tim, up here in the frozen north, we have a 50kw full time on 650...10kw
full time on 660...10kw full timer on 640 and 68050kw full time on 700,
50kw day21kw night on 1170... probably some of your better bets to hear
Alaska.

[IRCA] #2000 logged from Michigan

2016-12-28 Thread Tim Tromp
