[IRCA] New EWE Idea

2018-11-18 Thread Patrick Martin
Hi Everyone,

Yes, I am still here, but I still have my noise level. I don't really know what
it is coming from, but when the power in the neighborhood goes off, it is gone.

I am thinking of trying another EWE, but this one will run E/W, with
the lode to the West, pretty much aimed at Taiwan or Northern Philippines. I
have enough room, from the old stump behind the house to the shore pine tree to
the East, runs about 112 feet. I figure I can run a piece of PVC pipe up the
side of the tree and attach another one on the stump in the backyard. With some
luck I should be able to get up 20-25 feet. I can easily I pound a bunch of
copper pipe into the ground around the tree for a ground for the termination. I
may disconnect my NW EWE and use that coax, or I can run an extension from my
old SW EWE coax. That antenna came down a couple years ago from out in the
field. I never replaced it as it is not easy on the far side of the electric
fence and climbing the tree. With the noise level I just never bothered. At
nearly 70, I can still climb a tree, but if I can get away from having to do
it, I would rather. So, this is project I am considering. I should be able to
put a null to the East with a pot again, nulling like Long
view WA during the day, to give me a lobe to the West.
I thought about a KAZ or K9AY, but I have the pesky return wire near the
ground that my mower gets in the way. A EWE is up out of the way better and
they work well here. The interesting thing about this EWE, it will be longer
than my old SW one. Should be interesting to try. More later.

[IRCA] 18 Nov Victoria version.

2018-11-18 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
A definite fall back this morning, with no post sunrise enhancement.

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker, at least
briefly):

774 JOUB 1514UT

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it understandable by a
native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

828 JOBB 1447UT

972 HLCA two men in Korean 1446UT

1566 HLAZ man in Chinese 1531UT, no interference

1593 CNR1 man and woman //6145 1535UT

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or noise could
be understood by a native speaker:

594 JOAK 1450UT

603 female ballad 1445UT, likely HLSA? Someone else there also

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be guessed at by
cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in talk or music)

612 man talking, DU English intonation 1458UT; any fanfare on hour was too
imaginary to claim

747 JOIB sounded like English lessons 1459UT; NHK pips on hour

891 JOHK man //594 1509UT; very poor, but was scrabbling for DX

1242 man talking, Japanese intonation 1519UT

1557 woman talking Chinese intonation 1534-36UT

1611 male ballad 1535UT; suspect Philippines, as was on North Flag which tends
to reject Aussies.

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary" audio (either undermodulated or ravaged
by splatter)

567 639 693 702 864 873 1098 1134 1188 1287 1314 1323 1332 1377 1494 1575
seemed to be Asian;
576 702 1548 seemed to be DU

best wishes,

Nick

747 JOIB Sapporo, JAPAN     Man in Japanese at 1422.  Quite weak today

774 JOUB Akita, JAPAN   Man and woman in Japanese at 1354, //693.

828 JOBB Osaka, JAPAN   Man in Japanese at 1418.

And, that, Mark is exactly what you heard. You had WMT, which was carrying
University of Iowa football at the time. Announcer Gary Dolphin was giving a
"shout-out" to some of the stations on Learfield's Hawkeye Network, one of
which was KIAQ (others that he mentioned were WDBQ 107.5 in Dubuque, IA/Galena,
IL and KCSI 95.3/KOAK 1080 in southwest Iowa). I happened to be listening in
on the broadcast on local affiliate KOTK-1420 in Omaha at that moment.

[IRCA] KIAQ on AM?

2018-11-18 Thread Mark Pettifor

Greetings,

Does anyone know if KIAQ is broadcasting on 600 AM?

I was going through a recording from yesterday (17-Nov), because
afternoon conditions were good to the south and west, and at the 2000 (3
pm local time) TOH recording, I had several IDs. The first, just before
TOH, was WBOB Jacksonville, FL (decent catch for this early - 2 hours
and 20 minutes before sunset, both here and in Jacksonville). Just at
TOH, a station "jumped in" with what sounded like "...Radio, KIAQ..." At
first I thought it said KIHU, but that's not possible, since they are on
1010 AM, and in Utah (unless they have a // on 600?) But after listening
a few more times, I'm pretty sure it says KIAQ, which would make sense
reception-wise, because I was getting quite a few stations to the west
from that area (Iowa).

The thing is, KIAQ is only on FM (96.9), according to the FCC. I looked
through some recent volumes of DXN and DXM, and didn't see anything.
Getting ready to contact the station via email to see if they can tell
me anything.
