There are some other names I would add to Harry Helms list of, not
necessarily fathers of DX but those who have helped, in Harry's
 words, create today's DX hobby.

Bob Cooper, no relation to Dick or Ernie, is the TV-FM DX guru.
Cooper founded the American Ionospheric Propagation Association
(which later became the Worldwide Television FM-TV DX Assocation)
 in 1954, and in

1960, he established DXing Horizons Magazine, which was for a time
the home of Ken Boord's SWBC work. Cooper was a pioneer in the
cable TV industry, which started as a means of importing signals
from distant on-air TV stations into remote, otherwise unserved
areas. I recall that one of Cooper's DXing Horizons editors was
Glen Kippel, a Colorado broadcaster and engineer whom I convinced
the manager of KTUE, Tulia, Texas, to hire. Later Glen worked at
KIXZ in Amarillo with two other fellow NRC'ers, John Tudenham
 and Jerry Hickman.

Another DXing Horizons columnist was Bruce Elving, whose FM Atlas
is the FM equivalent of the NRC Log. Elving is another who
deserves to be on the list of those who are responsible for
helping to create today's DX hobby. I first met Bruce at the
NRC's 1991 Omaha convention, where he was invited to speak about
FM DX, and again at the 2002 WTFDA convention in Yukon, Oklahoma.
His monthly newsletter is one of the mainstays of available
information on the FM end of the broadcast industry.

Chip Kelly, a Dallas area resident, founded 10watts, which
Scott Fybush now operates since it has become an arm of Clear
 Channel's M Street Journal. I enjoyed photographing a historic
first meeting of Fybush and Kelly in the DFW area in 2002 during
a tower-hunting expedition. Fybush's Tower of the Week website is
one of the fun stops on my Internet favorite tab. The information
source Kelly invented and Fybush now oversees put both of these
gentlemen on my list of current hobby stalwarts.

John Bryant, retired architecture department professor at Oklahoma
State, compiler of an updated list of Japanese BCB stations,
author of a history of Zenith radios, one of today's top BCB
antenna researchers and DXpedition users, and one of five
founders of Corazon-DX, a website that deals with Mexican AM
 stations, goes on my list.

So does Jerry Berg, a Connecticut attorney, who, with Don Jensen,
kept up the Numero Uno mailing list up until a couple of years
ago, and who has established a mechanism for preserving historic
 verifications, deserves mention.

 So do Wayne Heinen, who so capably compiles and edits the NRC Log;
Fred Vobbe, who for a couple of decades has made the hobby
available to the visually handicapped via NRC's monthly DX Audio
Service tapes; Paul Swearingen, who has set a longevity record as
publisher of NRC's DX News (however galling that may be to some
on this list); and Kevin Redding, who spends many hours making
this valuable information source available to the hobby, also are
on my list of DX Hobby Heroes.

It's been a labor of love on the part of everyone Harry and I have
mentioned in this thread and I hope, despite what Harry refers to
as some very bad blood between some of the names on his list of
nine, I hope that today, no blood will either boil or flow! (Qal
 R. Mann, Krumudgeon and hysterical historian, ABDX via DXLD)

John wrote-- ``The late Carleton Lord, in a treatise he did for
the NRC book, noted that Radio Golf, an invention of Frank H.
Jones, owner of a station in Cuba, was introduced in the Aug. 5,
1922 edition of Radio Broadcasting News.``

Ah yes, Frank Jones. Back then, Cuba was not that Communist
country where Fidel Castro lives. In fact, many silent films
were shot in Havana and wealthy businesspeople like Mr Jones set
up radio stations there -- his was in a small town

Gee John, it sure would be great if someone (hint, hint) could begin
compiling some of these great stories and biographies. I remember many
of these names from the 60s and 70s but was just a pup at the time. It
would be a nice legacy to leave when we've all propagated for the last
time (become the ultimate groundwaves???). I corresponded with August
Balbi a few times in the early 70s - a wonderful guy and an absolute
icon in the world of DXing. He had logs and QSLs we can't even dream
about today.

Anyway, just a thought.

Ah, ha, as I read on, and note Charles' description of Ernie at
the Indianapolis 1962 NRC convention ... rather brusque and worked
for NYPD .. Ray B. Edge, who published the NRC bulletin, worked
for the Buffalo, N.Y., PD, and could easily be described as
rather brusque. Ray died in an auto accident in 1965 while he
and several other family members were returning from a tour of the
Corning Glass Works, where the late Carleton Lord, another of the
legendary figures of BCB DX, dating back to his columns in Radex
in the '30s and NNRC in the '40s and '50s, worked.

[IRCA] Free Uruguay stamps

2006-12-12 Thread JPOGUE
I just received a utility QSL from station CWA in Uruguay, and they
thoughtfully returned my two sets of mint Uruguayan stamps. Since I
don't expect to hear Uruguay on either BCB or SW anytime soon, I'm
offering the stamps at no charge to whoever e-mails me first. No
charge and I'll even spring for the postage to get them to you. First
come, first served. Merry Christmas.

Re: [IRCA] WFIL and WNTP DX Tests

2006-12-11 Thread JPOGUE
Congrats Steve. Sadly I wasn't able to knock down either of my locals
on 560 or 990 to the point where I could hear anything underneath
(both are less than 12 miles away from me). Just the same, many thanks
to Les, Rene and everyone else involved for airing the tests. Maybe
next time I'll try driving out of town a few miles and see if I can
get a proper null.

Both the WFIL and WNTP DX Tests were heard Sunday, 12/10, in St.
Albans, Vermont using my Sony ICF-2010 and Radio West loop.

WFIL-560 was heard before the test from 0450-0500 ELT with
 Delaware
Valley This Week talk show and religious promos, and during the
 test
from 0500-0510 and 0520-0537 with voice IDs, jingles, solid,
 sweep,
step, pulse, oscillating, and telephone tones, and Morse code
 letter.
Signal strong and very steady, nearly alone on the frequency.
 Just a
hint of signal strength drop at the switch from the 5 kW day
directional to the 5 kW non-directional pattern at 0530.

WNTP-990 was much more challenging due to the overwhelming 50 kW
signal of CKGM just 65 miles north. Tried for WNTP from 0510-0520
during their 50 kW day directional pattern to no avail. Checked
 back
at 0537-0600 during the 5 KW non-directional pattern and heard
several of the sets of the solid, sweep, step, pulse, oscillating,
and telephone tones, and the Morse code letter, very faintly way
under CKGM during pauses in their sports program.

Thanks to Rene for running the tests and to Les for handling the
verifications! MP3 files off to Les shortly.

Except for WMRO and the Montana tests, I'm doing well this season.

 From Kent Winrich, [EMAIL PROTECTED]

OK folks, here is what I can give you on the 1610
 signal.

First of all it is a legit and approved signal. It is
 for antenna
 testing
and is running 10kW on the East Coast. It is strictly
 a 1kHz tone.
 There
will be nothing else transmitted. So you dont need to
 look for any
 FSK.

The 1610 signal is now off the air, but there is more
 fun to be had.

Starting this morning (Friday) at 0900 (EST) the
 antenna testing will
 resume
on 1020 and will run until 0700 Sunday morning. The
 1020 signal will
 be
 shut down Sunday at 0700.

Tuesday look for the signal on 590 at 0900 (EST) and
 run until 0700
 Friday.
Friday will finish the antenna testing.

We would be most interested in any FIM readings you
 get including
 location,
date, and time. If you dont have a FIM, an RS(T)
 report would be
 great.
Again include date, time, location and a general
 report. Any audio
 reports
would be fun (heck I am a DXer after all)

If you have any readings from the 1610 signal, please
 feel free to
 forward
 them to me.

I took a reading at Fayetteville, NC yesterday at 1300
 EST and got a
 700uV.

Re: [IRCA] TP for 10-31

2006-10-31 Thread JPOGUE
As I sit here in the shadow of Graceland, enviously reading about the
guys on the west coast hearing TPs almost every morning, I observe
that I see far fewer reports of TAs being heard by others on the east
coast. I'm curious ... are the TAs heard that much less frequently
than TPs? If so, I wonder why? Or are there just fewer people either
listening for TAs ... or reporting them? I'd enjoy hearing some
thoughts from our seasoned transoceanic listeners on this, especially
since I'm much more likely to hear TAs than TPs. Thanks.

[IRCA] Maybe they'll find some QSL cards that never got delivered

2006-10-18 Thread JPOGUE
Mailman's death shrouded in mystery of mail he left behind

BROOKLINE, Mass. - For 20 years, Alan Gagne delivered mail to a tree-
lined neighborhood here - but not all of it.

The postal service said Tuesday he tucked away thousands of circulars
and hundreds of letters in drawers and closets in his apartment.

The authorities discovered the mail Friday when a supervisor, who
worried when Gagne did not show up for work, found him dead in his
apartment on the same street where he made his rounds in this affluent
suburb. The Boston Globe reported the discovery Tuesday.

Some of the mail dates from the 1980s, said Robert Cannon, a spokesman
for the postal service, and about 90 percent of it was circulars
flagged as undeliverable because of an address change. The postal
service is trying to deliver the first-class letters and cards, none
of which were opened, to their rightful recipients, but is having
trouble because the letters are so old.

Cannon said officials do not know why Gagne kept the mail, and
probably never would.

There appeared to be no rhyme or reason as to how, when, or where he
took the mail or why he was holding onto it, Cannon said. Stealing
mail is a federal offense, but the death voids all charges, he
said. It's tragic, unfortunate and bizarre.

Gagne, 54, lived on the bottom floor of a yellow duplex on a quiet
tree-lined street filled with parents pushing strollers. A bachelor,
he moved from an apartment around the corner a few years ago,
neighbors said, and apparently took the mail with him. He was
occasionally spotted at a nearby coffee shop and the grocery store,
but he and his habits were as much of a mystery in life as they are in
death.

Neighbors said Gagne was somewhat of an enigma, barely looking people
in the eye but seemingly obsessed with getting the mail to them
properly and on time, leaving them all the more baffled as to how and
why he took the mail.

When you went away on vacation he would leave photocopied notes in
his unusual, hard-to-read scrawl that you should check your mail
carefully because there might be a problem, said Jonathan Sandler,
35, who was walking by Gagne's Linden Street apartment with his wife
and 20-month-old son. He said Gagne was the best, most thorough
mailman he had ever had. Al was the mail.

Gagne was, by many accounts, socially awkward and had problems
striking up even casual conversations. He was often heard mumbling to
himself along the route and complained about how heavy the mailbag was.

Being social was extremely difficult for him, said Jeff Kline, who
lives on the street. He would answer if I spoke to him, but he
wouldn't strike up a conversation.

It was even difficult to tip him, Kline added. I would sort of
press a twenty into his hand and he'd look away. It was very hard for
him to look you in the eye.

Rebecca Scudiere, 25, a medical student who lives in the street's only
large apartment building, said she and her roommates often found their
mail was late and, Thursday, received a large bundle of unsorted mail.
She said she had been creeped out by a conversation with Gagne, whom
she saw every day but only acknowledged her once.

I was getting my mail at the same time he came and he said, Who's
your mail from, your boyfriend? I'd take you out,' she said. Aside
from that he was never friendly.

Neighbors said they are more sad than angry about the situation.

I should be rightfully angry, but I'm surprised. I'd be surprised if
anything of value was taken, Kline said. I find myself being much
more sad that he could have done this and his life had to be that way
than mad that he took circulars.
