Assalaamualaykum warahmatulahi wabarakatuhuh

The person who guides to what is good shall have the same reward as the one who performs that (good). [Muslim #020, Hadith #4665]

With Ramadhan over, we should be continuing our good deeds and actions. The spirit of Ramadhan should be our energy, momentum, and strength for the rest of the year!! Let us be consistent, for those are the ones that Allah loves.

Six Days of Shawwal & Sunnah Fasting

Aboo Ayyoob al-Ansaaree narrated: Prophet Muhummad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), said: "He who fasts Ramadhaan, and six of Shawwaal, it will be (in terms of rewards) as if the fasted a whole year." (Muslim)

One of the ways to in showing our loving of Allah, by following the Prophet Muhummad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) is to do those acts that he (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) advised his Companions, and the Ummah in general, to do. A sunnah which is certainly relevant to us in these days is his (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) practice to fast six days in the month of Shawwal.

When to Fast?

  1. Fast 6 days consecutively following Eid-ul-Fitr as soon as you can.
  2. If you are unable to, fast 6 days consecutively during anytime of the month.
  3. If you are unable to fast consecutively, fast any 6 days during Shawwal.

In the Spirit of Ramadan

On the authority of Abu Harayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), who said: Allah says:

Fasting is Mine and it I who give reward for it. [A man] gives up his sexual passion, his food and his drink for my sake. Fasting is like a shield, and he who fasts has two joys: a joy whin he breaks his fast and a joy when he meets his Lord. The change in the breath of the mouth of him who fasts is better in Allah's estimation than the smell of musk. (Bukhari)

Recommended Sunnah Fasts

Fast the 13th, 14th, 15th of every month

Abu Zharr al-Ghafari reported: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) ordered us to fast for three days of every month--that is, on the days of the full moon (the 13th, 14th, and 15th of the lunar month). And he said: 'It is like fasting the whole year.' " (An-Nassai)

Fast Mondays and Thursdays of every week

Abu Hurairah reported that the most the Prophet would fast would be Monday and Thursday. He was asked about that and he said: "The actions are presented on every Monday and Thursday. Allah forgives every Muslim or every believer, except for those who are boycotting each other. He says [about them]: 'Leave them.' " This is related by Ahmad with a sahih chain. It is recorded in Sahih Muslim that the Prophet, when asked about fasting on Monday, said: "That is the day on which I was born and the day on which I received revelations."

Narrated Abu Huraira: A man used to eat much, but when he embraced Islam, he started eating less. That was mentioned to the Prophet who then said, "A believer eats in one intestine (is satisfied with a little food) and a Kafir eats in seven intestines (eats much)."  [Bukhari #65, Hadith #309]

Making Up Fasts for Others

Narrated 'Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her): The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said,
"Whoever died and he ought to have fasted (the missed days of Ramadan) then his guardians must fast on his behalf."
[Bukhari Volume 3, Book 31, Number 173]

{Invite (mankind, O Muhammad ) to the Way of your Lord (i.e. Islam) with wisdom (i.e. with the Divine Inspiration and the Qur'an) and fair preaching, and argue with them in a way that is better. Truly, your Lord knows best who has gone astray from His Path, and He is the Best Aware of those who are guided.}
(Holy Quran-16:125)

{And who is better in speech than he who [says: "My Lord is Allah (believes in His Oneness)," and then stands straight (acts upon His Order), and] invites (men) to Allah's (Islamic Monotheism), and does righteous deeds, and says: "I am one of the Muslims."} (Holy Quran-41:33)

The prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "By Allah, if Allah guides one person by you, it is better for you than the best types of camels." [al-Bukhaaree, Muslim]

The prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)  also said, "Whoever calls to guidance will have a reward similar to the reward of the one who follows him, without the reward of either of them being lessened at all."
