Women and the interpretation of Islamic sources

  Written by Heba Raouf Ezzat

  Sep 04, 2007
Can a feminist reinterpretation of Islamic sources be set in the context
of Islamic theology? In other words: Can there be a feminist interpretation of
Quran and Sunna? Was there one in the past, and if not…can we initiate one in
the future? These questions have appeared on the agenda of women’s debates in
the Muslim world in the past two decades…stressing the “feminist” as
different…currently absent and …urgently needed.

  Introductory issues

1- Women’s contribution to Islamic sciences dates back to early Islam,
and has not seized through the centuries, with interruptions here and there in
history due to different reasons in each case. This history of women’s
involvement in ‘Ilm and Fiqh was recorded by male scholars themselves in books
of history of Islamic sciences. The issue is not initiated by contemporary
Western feminism but has its roots in our culture. This is important to clarify
that the liberating potential of Islam is inherent in Islam itself and its
history and is not a result of forces outside the culture and civilisation of
Islam or a result of the contact with the West in the colonial era. The issue
is not necessarily “feminist” and other terminology can –and sometimes should-
be used instead of the confusion and the enforcement of the concept “feminist”
on the Islamic concepts and their semantic field as a key concept.

2- The text dealt with in Christianity (the Bible) differs substantially
from the Book (Quran) in Islam regarding the status of the text , its origin ,
its legacy , and its position in the religion. While Jesus is the logos of the
Christian faith , Muhammad is not the logos in Islam, but the revelation…the
Book…the Quran. This gives the text - as well the Sunna that put it into action
- a centrality in the process of jurisprudence and legislation that is quite
unique. This raises the question whether one can talk about an international
cross-cultural and cross religious, unified or common agenda for women in this
matter.

3-While in the back of mind of the Western discourse of the matter is
only related to the text , in Islam the interpretation can not be completed
without the a complex interaction with the Sunna , a thorough understanding and
critical reading of the fiqh , and a continuous process of Ijtihad and Tajdid
to place the divine and absolute within the relative and present. The knowledge
of related Islamic disciplines and methodologies is a must, along with a
profound updated knowledge of the social and political contexts. Not only
average Muslims are required to study carefully the Islamic sciences, but
Islamic scholars are also required to know the realities of life - a strict
condition of Fatwa and Ijtihad that is known to everyone.

4-Contemporary Muslim women have been involved in studying and teaching
the Islamic sources, and Islamic Universities have distinguished women
scholars…the most prominent Bint Al-Shati -the professor of Tafsir in Egypt and
Morocco who died recently, as well as many female professors at Al-Azhar and in
all Islamic Universities. It has been neglected in recent writings that started
giving attention to the role of women within the Islamic movements in
transmitting and studying the Islamic sources that they, too, contributed to
the knowledge and Ijtihad. Ann Sophie Roald (In K.Ask M.Tjomsland 1998 ) for
example studied Bint Al-Shati, yet forgot Zainab A-Ghazali - the leading
Egyptian Muslim activist of the Muslim Brotherhood - who published an
interpretation of the Quran 1994. Though published by the famous Dar Al Shorouk
publishers, and forwarded by a praise by a (male) professor of Tafsir at
Al-Azhar University, Karam did not even refer to that volume when studying
Ghazali’s “feminist” ideas. (A.Karam , 1998) Women’s reading and interpretation
of the Islamic sources is then an ongoing process in the Islamic as well as
Islamist circles.

5-Taking the awareness about women’s problems and the unjust treatment of
women in Islamic societies with different Islamic pretexts as the criteria
according to which one classifies writings as “feminist” or not (sometimes
regardless of the sex/gender of the author], one can find indeed that male
scholars have been more outspoken and “revolutionary” than women scholars.
Hence insisting on “feminist” as description for the

Six Saudi satellites launched successfully into space

04/17/2007

The Kingdom has successfully launched six satellites into orbit, the King
Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) announced. The satellites
were launched from the Baikonur Base in Kazakhstan on a Russian-Ukrainian
missile.

Prince Dr. Turki bin Saud Al-Saud, Vice President of KACST, said that a Saudi
team at the Space Research Institute performed all the preparation and testing
on the satellites. The launch had been originally scheduled for March 27, 2007
but was postponed for technical reasons.

This latest launch brings the total number of Saudi satellites in orbit to 12.
Most are used for communications.

Bismillah [IslamCity] australia: Young Muslim Women urged to enlist

Young Muslim Women urged to enlist
Richard Kerbaj
http://www.theaustr alian.news. com.au... 3-2702,00. html

YOUNG Australian Muslim women will be targeted to join the Army Reserve and
prove they are part of the national security solution.

The plan by Sydney Muslim leader Jamal Rifi - which has been welcomed by the
Australian Defence Force - is designed to break down barriers between Islam and
mainstream Australia . It also aims to revive an element of Islamic culture
that saw men and women fighting side by side during the days of the prophet
Mohammed.

Dr Rifi, president of Lakemba Sports and Recreation Club in Sydney 's
southwest, said he wanted hijab-wearing women between the ages of 17 and 26
to become reservists and would soon begin promoting the idea to Muslim parents
on Arabic and Islamic radio networks to urge them to let their kids join.

I will be encouraging Arab-speaking Australians to join overall, but I will
concentrate mainly on the Muslim community, he told The Australian yesterday.

I would like to send the message to the wider Australian society that we are
not part of the problems, we are part of the solution.

TAFE student Hala Ayache said she was keen to join the Army Reserve so she
could give back to Australia and would encourage her friends to sign up with
her.

We can join the country that we were born in and, you know, we can go lose
weight a little bit, too, said the 19-year-old from Punchbowl in Sydney 's
southwest.

University student Alaa Hashem, 20, said becoming a reservist would help dispel
misconceptions about religious Muslim women that we stay at home and are
uneducated.

The nation's most senior female Muslim leader, Aziza Abdel-Halim, welcomed the
idea.

I'm all for it, she said. If the country needs them, they are there to lend
their support.

Dr Rifi said a focus group discussion earlier this year found that Muslim women
were keen on becoming reservists and that many would sign up when the
recruitment drive took off within two months.

He acknowledged there were cultural barriers such as Islamic dress codes that
would discourage Muslim parents from encouraging their daughters to join.

But Dr Rifi said he would run discussion groups for parents to learn more about
the benefits of allowing their children to become involved.

A defence force spokesman said the women would be welcomed provided they met
entry requirements. Defence and the ADF encourage an inclusive workplace that
recognises and respects the significance of peoples culture and beliefs, he
said.

But Australian Defence Association executive director Neil James said the hijab
might present occupational health and safety issues.

Is There an Army Cover Up of Rape and Murder of Women Soldiers?
The Department of Defense statistics are alarming - one in three women who join
the US military will be sexually assaulted or raped by men in the military. The
warnings to women should begin above the doors of the military recruiting
stations, as that is where assaults on women in the military begins - before
they are even recruited.

Bismillah [IslamCity] Obama Cheers Ring HOLLOW in the Mideast

2008-07-30 Thread Yusuf Ibrahim
*Obama Cheers Ring Hollow in the **Mideast***

*Jonathan Steele | The Guardian*

*What a contrast. In Western Europe Obama-mania is in full flood, epitomized
by raving crowds in Berlin last night as well as the polls which show the
Democratic candidate to be far more popular than John McCain in almost every
country. In **Israel** he is met with apprehension, and in the Palestinian
territories there is only the faintest hope that the deadlocked conflict
will ever end.*

*The difference is that Europeans know the American president holds the keys
to war or peace. He has enormous influence in dragging European governments
after him, as the disastrous **Iraq** adventure showed. So it is not
surprising that many Europeans are crying out for a man in the White House
who will be less aggressive, less unilateral, less imperial, and more
attuned to the complexities of international policy. Obama seems to be the
one. In the **Middle East** the **US** leader has much less power. **Israel*
* calls the shots, and what's happening on the ground is deeply gloomy and
anti-peace. The chances of creating a viable Palestinian state have almost
vanished as Israeli settlements on the **West Bank** go on increasing and
yet more checkpoints appear.*

No wonder that, while they like Obama more than McCain, Palestinians feel
little optimism. Obama might create a different atmosphere, says Yasser
Abd Rabbo, the secretary-general of the Palestine Liberation Organization,
stressing the might. Bush polarized things between him and Osama Bin
Laden. The moderates were the big losers. People in the middle felt
crushed, he argues. Others expect Obama will take time to focus on the Middle
East in spite of his promise this week to be engaged in peace from day one.
He'll concentrate first on Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, and the economy, which
all matter more for Americans, an adviser to the Palestinian negotiating
team told me.

His visit to the Israeli border town of Sderot was one-sided, not just
because he did not balance it with visits to places where Palestinians are
oppressed. Sderot is more than a place under threat of terror. It is a model
for how cease-fires are negotiable, and why they are the vital first step
toward any serious peace agreement. Yet Obama ignored the point.

Why have a cease-fire in Gaza, but not one in the West Bank? Do they want
us to develop missiles and rockets here before we can have a cease-fire?
asks Mustafa Barghouti, one of the most respected independents in the
Palestinian Parliament. He points to the spate of arrests by Israeli troops
in recent weeks in Nablus, Hebron and Jenin, which have gone virtually
unreported. The Israelis conduct almost nightly raids on schools, clinics
and charities, seizing files, computers, and patients' records.

*Since Bush's **Annapolis** conference no progress has been made. In spite
of a half a dozen meetings with Mahmoud Abbas, the Israeli Prime Minister
Ehud Olmert refuses to put forward drafts for the framework deal that Bush
wanted to see signed before he leaves office. It is all talk but no work.
Going against peace, another 9,700 housing units for settlers have been
announced for **East Jerusalem**, compared with 1,600 in the previous four
years. Eighty-six new checkpoints have gone up in the **West Bank**.
Meanwhile, the EU chooses this moment to upgrade its cultural and economic
relations with **Israel**, forfeiting the little leverage it has.*

What could Obama do as president? Watching the candidate with Israel's
President Shimon Peres in Jerusalem this week, it was hard not to be touched
by the younger man's grace. As they strolled across the lawn before making
press statements, Obama inclined his head and put his hand gently on Peres'
back like a respectful son or even grandson. Peres repaid the compliment,
all but endorsing Obama. I've read both your books and was impressed by
their moving humanity ... Those who say the future belongs to the young are
wrong. The present belongs to the young.

*The chances of a settlement have never been bleaker. The Palestinians are
deeply split between Fatah and Hamas, and without unity there is no way
Abbas can pretend to reach a deal with **Israel**. In **Israel** every
politician is a hard-liner, whether Kadima, Labour or Likud. Olmert is
playing a game of deception when he says peace is close. The negotiations
are going in circles. Nothing is moving forward, except the confiscation of
land, the expansion of the wall, and the building of industrial zones round
the settlements. You can't trust them to want a deal this year, next year or
any year, says Abd Rabbo.*

On both sides the public mood is grim. Israeli attitudes toward the
Palestinians are built on fear — all-pervasive and sometimes turning into
panic. Palestinians are consumed with anger, rekindled by every new
injustice — an anger that sometimes turns to rage. It is no coincidence that
this year's

Science refutes doctrine of trinity
By Ahmad Wahaj Al-Siddiqui Saudi Gazette

IN a report narrated by Ibn Jarir and Ibn Hatim a Christian delegation from
Najran came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and disputed about Jesus son of
Mary and said who is his father, and they attributed falsehood to God.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) addressed the delegation and said, “Don’t you
know that the son resembles his parents.” They replied in the positive.
He said, “Don’t you know, that God is Ever Living, never dies, and death shall
come upon Jesus (after his second coming). They said, yes. He said, “Don’t you
know that our God is the Sustainer of all that exists, He is the Preserver and
Protector and gives sustenance to all.”
They said, yes. He said, “Did Jesus possess any of these qualities? They said,
no. He said, “Don’t you know that nothing is hidden from God in or on the earth
or in the heavens.
They said, yes. He said, “Did Jesus know any of these things except what God
had made him know? They said, yes. Do you know our Lord does neither eat nor
drink and is free from any attributes of weaknesses of mankind, and God shaped
Jesus in the embryo as He wished. They said, yes. He said, “Don’t you know that
Jesus mother conceived him, as every woman conceives, then she gave birth to
him and fed him as every woman feeds her child, and he used to eat, drink,
excrete and urinate.
They said, yes. He said, “them how he can be what you alleged i.e. God the son.
Yet they did not believe in the Prophet (peace be upon him); then Allah sent
down,
“There is no God but He (the Unique), the Ever-Living, Sustainer (of all) that
exists.” (Qur’an, 3:2) (Literal translation from Pickthall). In another verse,
And they say Allah has begotten a son. Be He Glorified, nay, to Him belongs all
that is in the heavens and the earth. (Qur’an, 2:116)
Over and above the dogma of godhood of Jesus, the Jews also claimed Ezra being
the Son of God and the pagans said, the angels are the daughters of God. God
denied them all. He is too exalted and far above from any such fabrications. He
is the Creator of everything and everything created depends for its existence
on Him. Secondly God is sempiternal, Immortal and Omnipresent, but the one born
of out of mother is mortal. But God is eternal and perpetual therefore, a
mortal can’t be a son to immortal.
The modern science found the truth of what was uttered by the Prophet (peace be
upon him) in the 7th century. Let us consider the signs in their existence and
in such human traits as eating human food as mentioned by the Prophet an also
as per directions of the Qur’an.
“The Messiah [Isa (Jesus)], son of Maryam (Mary), was no more than a Messenger;
many were the Messengers that passed away before him. His mother [Maryam
(Mary)] was a Siddiqah [i.e. she believed in the Words of Allah and His Books
(See Verse 66:12)]. They both used to eat food (as any other human being, while
Allah does not eat). Look how We make the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses,
lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) clear to them; yet look how they are deluded
away (from the truth).” (Qur’an, 5:75)
The science has unraveled the mechanism that fulfills the Genesis Law of
reproduction only after its kind. The substance is called deoxyribonucleic acid
(DNA) consisting of complex molecules present in the chromosomes of all plants
and animal cells and carrying in coded form instructions for passing on
hereditary characteristics.
DNA is the microscopic computer with a built-in memory. It contains a fantastic
number of blueprints and at the right time issues orders to build the cells and
structures of every plant, animal and human beings to its kind.
Therefore, Ezra and Jesus had all human limitations from their mothers: the
limitations of ageing and decaying, eating and excreting, drinking and
urinating, working and sweating, laughing and crying, awakening and sleeping,
tiring and relaxing, breathing and spitting, gaining and losing, fearing and
hiding and hence any one with all these infirmities can’t be a God, neither a
person with the attributes of godhood.
God is Unique, Besought of all, He begotteth not, nor He was begotten and there
is none comparable unto Him.
Whatever the Prophet (peace be upon him) had told the delegation of Najran, had
been duly confirmed by the modern science. OTHER NEWS FROM Islam
