[IslamCity] Interpreting the Qur'aan
In the Name of Allah, the Gracious, the Merciful Interpreting the Qur'aan I believe an overwhelming majority of Muslims in the world today think that it is very difficult to understand the meaning of Qur'aanic verses without the aid of the ahuaadeeth. A thorough knowledge of all the recognised books of ahuaadeeth, our Ulama assert, is a must before one could attempt interpreting the Qur'aan. That's what the Ulama say. But what does the Qur'aan itself say? It's a very sensitive issue, but it's also a vital one. The very vitality of the Muslim Ummah depends on the correct attitude to this issue that the Ummah, by and large, takes. So I appeal to all concerned that while discussing this important subject, let us not be at daggers drawn with one another. And let us pray to Allah that He enlightens us with the Truth in this regard. As a starter in the quest for the Truth on the role of ahuadeeth in interpreting the Qur'aan, I give below an extract from my book ISLAM POLYGAMY, which, I think, would be relevant to the subject: ..."HE it is Who has sent down to you the Book. In it are verses that are unambiguously clear (muhkamaat). These it is that constitute the essence of the Book. And there are other verses that are are not clear (mutashaabihaat). As for those prone to go astray in their minds, they are after those verses that are not clear, seeking mischief and seeking interpretation thereof. And none, but Allah, knows the interpretation of the mutashaabihaat! And the ones having deep knowledge, say, 'We do believe therein. All of it is from our Lord.' And few remember this except for those, blessed with understanding." [Q: 3.7] 4. It would perhaps be pertinent here to illustrate the mutashaabihaat with an example. There are numerous verses that mention al-naar - the Fire into which those who suppressed the Truth and led profligate lives in this world, would be thrown, in the Hereafter. The fire, as we understand it in this world, would make any person die within minutes of being thrown into the thick of it. But the Fire of the Hereafter would not make persons die. They will remain alive there to suffer ad infinitum! We, with our limited intellect, are unable to understand such a Fire. So, al-naar is a mutashaabih word for us. We, as believers, accept its attributes as described to us by Allah. Like al-naar, al-firdaus, al-malaaika and all other things, unseen and imperceptible to us, are mutashaabihaat. Allah alone, by Himself, is completely aware of their meanings. We have to accept whatever He is pleased to tell us about them, although we may not completely understand the information thereof that He gives us. 5. Muhkamaat, on the other hand, are verses that are capable of being completely understood by us, and are required to be implemented by us! These are unambiguous and clear by themselves, or are made clear through other verses of the Qur'aan. Time and again, the Qur'aan reiterates the clarity and unambiguity of such verses. "... Allah makes clear to you His verses, so that you may be grateful." [5.89] "... See how variously do We explain the verses. Yet, they turn away!" [6.46] The Qur'aan is replete with such verses. 6. There is therefore no scope at all for anyone to interpret the muhkamaat with one's own opinion Besides, in verse 17.89, Allah clearly tells us, "And, certainly, We have variously and fully explained to mankind, in this Qur'aan, examples from every possible situation. However, most persons refuse to believe in anything but disbelief." (Emphasis added) The verse above, read with verses quoted earlier herein, makes it absolutely clear that the Qur'aan is a self-contained Reference Book, given by the Creator, for guidance of mankind. Anyone who disbelieves in this emphatic Qur'aanic assertion, is a disbeliever in the Allah-perfected Religion of Islam. The Qur'aan then leaves no scope for any believer to say that the divine Book provides no solution to any given problem faced by mankind anywhere in the world. Nor can any believer say, with conviction, that any given Qur'aanic instruction, command or guidance is not clear by itself, or, is not adequately clarified by means of other Qur'aanic verses. If it is not clear to any person, it is just because that person has not put in enough effort to understand it. Yes! Every person trying to understand the Qur'aan, has to put in adequate efforts towards that end. The Qur'aan is in the Arabic language. So, first of all, one has to acquire at least a working knowledge of Qur'aanic Arabic as a language. Armed with this only minimum requirement, any sincere seeker of Truth ought to find the divine Book easy to understand. I have therefore no hesitation in asserting that the notion that the Qur'aan cannot be understood without the aid of the ahuaadeeth, is a lie concocted against Allah. I say it's a

[IslamCity] Why is My Supplication Not Answered?
Allaah says: And your Lord says: Call upon Me and I will, respond to your supplication. [Soorah Ghaafir 40:60] So why is it that a persons duaa (supplication) is sometimes unanswered?: All praise is due to Allaah, Lord of the worlds. May the Prayers and Peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his Family and his Companions. I ask Allah for the ability to be correct in belief, speech and actions, for myself and for my brothers and sisters.Allaah says: And your Lord says: Call upon Me and I will respond to your supplication. Verily those who are too arrogant to worship Me will, enter Hell in humiliation. [Soorah Ghaafir 40:60] The questioner stated that he did indeed make duaa (supplication) to Allaah - the Mighty and Majestic - but it was not answered by Allaah. So he is in doubt with respect to this noble aayah (verse), in which Allaah promises to answer the one who supplicates to Him, and indeed Allaah - the Most Perfect - never breaks His promise. So the clarification of this is that there are certain conditions that need to be fulfilled in order for a supplication to be answered. These conditions are: Firstly: Sincerity to Allaah - the Mighty and Majestic. That is to say, one must be sincere in his duaa (supplication), so he turns to Allaah - the one free from all imperfections with an attentive heart, being truthful in his turning to Him, knowing that Allaah - the Most Perfect, the Most High - is capable of answering his duaa (supplication) and hoping that the duaa will be answered. Secondly: During the duaa, the caller should feel that he is in need of Allaah - the Most Perfect, the Most High in fact in dire need; and that only Allaah alone answers the supplication of the one in distress and the one who removes evil. Thirdly: That the one making duaa should refrain from haraam (unlawful) matters, as this acts as a barrier between the person and his duaa (supplication) being answered - as has been established in the authentic hadeeth, from the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam - may the peace blessings of Allah be upon him) who said: Indeed Allaah - the Most High -is good and accepts only that which is good. Allaah has ordered the Believers to do that which He commanded the Messengers. Allaah - the Most High -has said: O you Messengers! Eat of the good things and do righteous actions. [Sooratul-Muminoon 3:51] And Allaah - the Most High - says: O you who Believe! Eat of the good things wherewith We have provided you. [Sooratul-Baqarah 2:172] Then he mentioned (the case of) a man who, having journeyed far is dishevelled and dusty and who spreads out his hands to the sky (saying): O Lord! O Lord, whilst his food is unlawful, his drink unlawful and he is nourished unlawfully. So how can he be answered! [Muslim] So the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) explained the un-likelihood that this persons duaa would be answered, even after fulfilling the apparent factors which aid the duaa being answered. The apparent factors being: [i]: Raising ones hands towards the sky, meaning towards Allaah - the Mighty and Majestic. Extending the hands out towards Allaah -the Mighty and Majestic - is amongst the causes of duaa being responded to, as is shown in the narration from the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) that he said: Indeed your Lord is Alive, Most generous. He feels shy that when his servant raises his bands towards Him, calling upon Him, that He should return him empty, having nothing. [Ahmad] [ii]: This man called upon Allaah - the Most High - using the name Rabb (Lord). Seeking tawassul (the means of nearness to Allaah) with this name is also regarded as one of the causes for duaa to be responded to, since the Rabb is the Creator, the Owner, the Governor of all affairs - and the reigns of the Heavens and the earth are in His Hands. Due to this, you will find that most of the supplications made in the Noble Quraan are by this name: Our Lord! We have heard the call of one calling us to faith: Believe you in the Lord, and we have believed. Our Lord! Forgive us our sins, and remit from us our evil deeds, and take to Yourself our souls in the company of the righteous. Our Lord! Grant us what You did promise unto us through Your Messengers, and do not disgrace us on the Day of judgement, for You never break Your promise. And their Lord has accepted of them, and answered them: Never will I suffer to be lost the work of any of you, whether male or female. [Soorah Aal-'lmraan 3:193-195] So tawassul (seeking the means of nearness to Allaah) by this name is one of the causes for the duaa to be responded to. [iii]: This man was a traveller, and journeying is often a cause for duaa to be responded to, because a person feels more in need of Allaah - the Mighty and Majestic - when travelling, than when a person is resident with his family. He was dusty and dishevelled, seeming very insignificant in himself, as if the most important
[IslamCity] Prayers - Mark on the Forehead
Prayers: Mark On The Foreheadhttp://www.ourdialogue.com/p29.htm#2Question You once said that praying on a hard surface or a dirty place brings the prayer mark on the forehead of some people. I feel that this contradicts Verse 29 of Surah 48, which speaks of the effect of prostration being seen in the faces of worshippers.Answer Certainly the verse you refer to mentions that prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, and those who are with him have certain qualities which are worthy of praise. It goes on to say: "You recognize them by their marks on their faces, traced by prostration." Here the recognition is general. It is not a special case. They are recognized by people generally, as their worship and prostration leave their "trace" on them. That "trace" is, as Muhammad Asad says, "the spiritual reflection of... faith in the believers manner of life and even in his outward aspect." You may even take it literally and say that prayers leave its mark in a sort of calm serenity in the overall bearing of a person. This is totally different from the black mark on the foreheads of some people, which is wrongly associated with prayer. The Quranic verse does not refer to any physical mark. To say so is to suggest that people who have the mark are given a testimony in their favor. That leaves others who do not have that mark feeling inferior. It is not right. May I also point out that this mark is quite common among people of certain countries, but not noticed among the population of other countries. Does that tell us something? May be it confirms what I say about the causes of that mark, which is sometimes so bad that you could see that it conceals some infection.Islam in Perspective http://www.ourdialogue.comAB [EMAIL PROTECTED] "For to us will be their return; then it will be for us to call them to account." [IslamCity] To Progress, Islamic Countries Must Advance Women's Rights
The Believers, men and women, are protectors one of another: they enjoin what is just, and forbid what is evil: they observe regular prayers, practise regular charity, and obey Allah and His Messenger. On them will Allah pour His mercy: for Allah is Exalted in power, Wise. (Al-Qur'an, 9:71 - At-Tawba [Repentance, Dispensation]) January 18, 2006 Edition To Progress, Islamic Countries Must Advance Women's RightsBy John Hughes http://www.csmonitor.com/2006/0118/p09s02-cojh.htmlSALT LAKE CITY Much is written about the conflict between Islam and the West. But the debate that will actually determine the future of Islam lies within Islam, between Muslim and Muslim. It is a debate that is going on in Arab lands from Morocco to Iraq and in non-Arab, but predominantly Islamic, lands from Pakistan to Iran.It is a debate about many things, not the least being the use of terrorism against innocent human beings. But particularly significant is the discourse about the role of women in Islamic societies. It is significant because the emergence of women from the subordinate role to which many of them have been relegated in Islamic societies would speed the economic and political progress of these countries in a positive direction. In the economic field, some Arab countries have made progress, but a recent UN report prepared by Arab scholars found that over the past 20 years, growth in per capita income was the lowest in the world except in sub-Saharan Africa. The report concluded: "At an annual growth rate of 0.5 percent annually, if such trends continue in the future, it will take the average Arab citizen 140 years to double his or her income, while other regions are set to achieve that level in a matter of less than 10 years."The report found that stunting the education and advancement of women was a major hindrance to development. One in every two Arab women can neither read nor write, and, said the report, "society as a whole suffers when half of its productive potential is stifled."In the field of politics there is some progress. For example, women are assigned 25 percent of the seats in Parliament under the new Constitutions in both Afghanistan and Iraq. But there are still many hindrances. For instance, while Iraq's new constitution may claim on paper to bar discrimination because of sex, reform advocates argue that it can be manipulated by reliance on Islamic law to the detriment of women. It is important for Westerners to understand that while many Islamic women want to play a stronger role in their respective societies, their strategy may sometimes be within the framework of Islamic theology, or sharia, the body of Islamic law developed over the years by religious scholars to provide moral guidance to Muslims. In an article in the magazine Foreign Affairs, Isobel Coleman, an expert on the subject, says that sharia is open to a wide range of understanding and that across the Muslim world today, "progressive Muslims are seeking to interpret its rules to accommodate a modern role for women."This may explain the somewhat surprising reception Karen Hughes got from Muslim women in Saudi Arabia last year. Ms. Hughes, long a key political adviser to President Bush, has become undersecretary for public diplomacy at the State Department. A substantial part of her assignment is to engage in dialogue with the Muslim world. Sensibly, she sought out Muslim women, arguing that they had much in common with women in the West. However, when she talked of the right of Saudi women to drive cars just like American women, some demurred and said they had no interest in driving. It is possible that Hughes was set up with an audience programmed by the Saudi governing regime. It is also possible that the audience was reflecting another reality. As Ms. Coleman writes, in many Islamic countries, reformers have largely abandoned attempts to replace sharia with secular law, a "route that has proved mostly futile. Instead, they are trying to promote women's rights within an Islamic framework. This approach seems more likely to succeed, since it fights theology with theology - a natural strategy in countries with conservative populations and where religious authority is hard to challenge."The argument Coleman says that reformers use in their campaign against these extreme conservative regimes is that Islam is actually a very progressive religion for women, but has been perverted because of selective interpretation by patriarchal leaders and a mingling of Islamic teachings with tribal customs and traditions. Thus if democracy is to flourish in the Islamic world, it may not be "democracy" as Westerners know it. Perhaps "freedom" is the better word to describe what we can hope for. Freedom may come in different forms in different countries. Though the culture may dictate different approaches, there are some basics: freedom of the press, free elections, an independent
[IslamCity] THE VIRTUES OF ALLAH'S SACRED MONTH MUHARRAM - PART 4
The virtues of fasting on Aashooraa Ibn Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with them both) said: I never saw the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) so keen to fast any day and give it priority over any other than this day, the day of Aashooraa, and this month, meaning Ramadaan. (Reported by al-Bukhaari, 1867). The meaning of his being keen was that he intended to fast on that day in the hope of earning the reward for doing so. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: For fasting the day of Aashooraa, I hope that Allaah will accept it as expiation for the year that went before. (Reported by Muslim, 1976). This is from the bounty of Allaah towards us: for fasting one day He gives us expiation for the sins of a whole year. And Allaah is the Owner of Great Bounty. Which day is Aashooraa? Al-Nawawi (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: Aashooraa and Taasooaa are two elongated names [the vowels are elongated] as is stated in books on the Arabic language. Our companions said: Aashooraa is the tenth day of Muharram and Taasooaa is the ninth day. This is our opinion, and that of the majority of scholars. This is the apparent meaning of the ahaadeeth and is what we understand from the general wording. It is also what is usually understood by scholars of the language. (al-Majmoo) Aashooraa is an Islamic name that was not known at the time of Jaahiliyyah. (Kashshaaf al-Qinaa, part 2, Sawm Muharram). Ibn Qudaamah (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: Aashooraa is the tenth day of Muharram. This is the opinion of Saeed ibn al-Musayyib and al-Hasan. It was what was reported by Ibn Abbaas, who said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) commanded us to fast Aashooraa, the tenth day of Muharram. (Reported by al-Tirmidhi, who said, a saheeh hasan hadeeth). It was reported that Ibn Abbaas said: The ninth, and reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to fast the ninth. (Reported by Muslim). Ataa reported that he said, Fast the ninth and the tenth, and do not be like the Jews. If this is understood, we can say on this basis that it is mustahabb (encouraged) to fast on the ninth and the tenth, for that reason. This is what Ahmad said, and it is the opinion of Ishaaq. It is mustahabb (encouraged) to fast Taasooaa with Aashooraa Abd-Allaah ibn Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with them both) said: When the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) fasted on Aashooraa and commanded the Muslims to fast as well, they said, O Messenger of Allaah, it is a day that is venerated by the Jews and Christians. The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, If I live to see the next year, in sha Allaah, we will fast on the ninth day too. But it so happened that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) passed away before the next year came. (Reported by Muslim, 1916). Al-Shaafa'i and his companions, Ahmad, Ishaaq and others said: It is mustahabb to fast on both the ninth and tenth days, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) fasted on the tenth, and intended to fast on the ninth. On this basis it may be said that there are varying degrees of fasting Aashooraa, the least of which is to fast only on the tenth and the best of which is to fast the ninth as well. The more one fasts in Muharram, the better it is. The reason why it is mustahabb to fast on Taasooaa Al-Nawawi (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: The scholars our companions and others mentioned several reasons why it is mustahabb to fast on Taasooaa: 1. the intention behind it is to be different from the Jews, who only venerate the tenth day. This opinion was reported from Ibn Abbaas 2. the intention is to add another days fast to Aashooraa. This is akin to the prohibition on fasting a Friday by itself, as was mentioned by al-Khattaabi and others. 3. To be on the safe side and make sure that one fasts on the tenth, in case there is some error in sighting the crescent moon at the beginning of Muharram and the ninth is in fact the tenth. The strongest of these reasons is being different from the People of the Book. Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) forbade imitating the People of the Book in many ahaadeeth, for example, his words concerning Aashooraa: If I live until the next year, I will certainly fast on the ninth day. (al-Fataawa al-Kubra, part 6, Sadd al-Dharaai al-Mufdiyah ilal-Mahaarim ) Ibn Hajar (may Allaah be pleased with him) said in his commentary on the hadeeth If I live until the next year, I will certainly fast on the ninth day: What he meant by fasting on the ninth day was probably not that he would limit himself to that day, but would add it to the tenth, either to be

[IslamCity] Martin, Layton, Harper all reaffirm support of Israel

OTTAWA -- In a showcase of support last week for Israel and Canadian Jewry, nearly 1,000 people attended the inaugural parliamentary dinner of the Canadian Council for Israel and Jewish Advocacy (CIJA). Prime Minister Paul Martin assured the assembled group that Canada supports Israel. "Canada will not, nor will we ever, waiver in our support for Israel," he said. "We believe strongly, incontrovertibly, in Israel's right to defend itself against those who would destroy it." He mentioned he had earlier telephoned Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon to congratulate him on the preceding week's successful vote in the Knesset authorizing Israel's unilateral withdraw from the Gaza Strip. Martin expressed support for the plan. "Sharon's plan for Gaza, in my view, will enhance Israel's security and lead in the direction of peace," he said. Both Martin and Opposition leader Stephen Harper jokingly pointed out how the CIJA dinner was able to bring together the leaders and many representative of all four federal political parties. Hershell Ezrin, CIJA's chief executive officer, estimated that from 150 to 160 parliamentarians -- MPs and senators -- attended the dinner and said he thought that "there were more members of Parliament involved in our event than in any other event in Ottawa except for the opening of the House." The dinner was the celebratory culmination of a two-day conference in Ottawa called Democracy in Action. The conference was effectively the launch of CIJA, the Jewish community's national umbrella advocacy and educational agency formed earlier in the year. Hundreds of participants were part of the large contingent that participated in the two-day conference. Coming from across Canada, the participants, including members of the CIJA-Public Affairs Committee, an independent membership-based organization promoting involvement in the Canadian democratic process, descended on the nation's capital for hands-on training in the fundamentals of participatory democracy and political activism. The conference included meetings with members of parliament and government officials, a reception with Israel's ambassador to Canada, Alan Baker, and an address by noted British historian Sir Martin Gilbert. Speakers at the parliamentary dinner emphasized the common democratic values shared by Canada and Israel. Harper referred to the Jewish state as a "model of democratic engagement" in which the "values of democracy are defended heroically every single day." The dinner featured a special tribute to former Quebec premier Lucien Bouchard, former Ontario premiers Mike Harris and Bob Rae, and former Newfoundland premier Brian Tobin. The former provincial premiers were honoured and recognized by CIJA "for their steadfast support for Israel and enduring friendship to the Jewish community." Steven Cummings, co-chair of CIJA, said that "these were two extraordinary days in which the Jewish community came of age in engaging as Canadians in the political process. It is imperative for the community to be involved in order to ensure the quality of life for themselves and all Canadians." In his keynote address, journalist and CBC broadcaster Rex Murphy stated that "the fact that the goals and ideals of democracy are maintained in Israel is a beacon in itself." He expressed amazement at the seeming ease with which any catastrophe in the world can be blamed on Israel. "This is all code for a real old story that every person in this room knows better than I." According to Ezrin, the purpose of the conference was three-fold: to explain to participants about the new advocacy structure of CIJA; to establish new relationships with parliamentarians; and to communicate issues of concern and interest to the Jewish community. "I think we were able to have an impact in all of those areas," he said.CIJA co-chair Brent Belzberg enthused over the broad community participation in the conference. "The Jewish community through CIJA was able to communicate one on one with politicians throughout the day and 550 people from across the country were given that opportunity. Our politicians were available, beyond that which anyone might have expected." Lawrence Hart, national president of Maccabi Canada and the chair of the community relations committee of the Canada Israel Committee was "impressed with the enormous scope and depth of the conference," which he said "eloquently demonstrated the community's commitment to and involvement in the political process of our country." [IslamCity] Scholars Threaten Boycott Over Anti-prophet Cartoons
- Original Message - From: Mahmudul Hasan To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ; Witness Pioneer Sent: Sunday, January 22, 2006 3:32 AM Subject: [Dahuk]: Scholars Threaten Boycott Over Anti-prophet Cartoons Scholars Threaten Boycott Over Anti-prophet Cartoons "We urge the officials in Denmark and Norway to take a firm stance against these repeated insults," said the union chaired by Sheikh Qaradawi. By Adel Abdel Halim, IOL Correspondent CAIRO, January 21, 2006 (IslamOnline.net) The International Union for Muslim Scholars (IUMS) threatened on Saturday, January 21, to call for a boycott of Danish and Norwegian products over the publication of controversial anti-Prophet cartoons in both Scandinavian countries. "We urge the officials in Denmark and Norway to take a firm stance against these repeated insults to the Muslim nation and the prophet followed by 1.3 billion people across the globe," read a statement by the Dublin-based body, a copy of which was mailed to IslamOnline.net on Saturday, January 21. "Otherwise the IUMS will be forced to urge millions of Muslims across the world to boycott all Danish and Norwegian products and activities." The union asked Arab and Muslim countries to boycott an upcoming Middle East exhibition organized by the Danish Center for Culture and Development (DCCD). Twelve drawings depicting Prophet Muhammad in different settings appeared in Denmark 's largest circulation daily Jyllands-Posten on September 30. In one of the drawings, an image assumed to be that of the prophet appeared with a turban shaped like a bomb strapped to his head. The controversial cartoons have been reprinted in a Norwegian magazine on January 10. The images, considered blasphemous under Islam, have drawn rebuke from Muslim minorities in both countries and triggered a diplomatic crisis with Arab and Muslim countries. Not Enough The IUMS demanded a clear apology for the blasphemous cartoons, saying recent remarks by Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen were not enough. "The prime minister only reaffirmed commitment to freedom of _expression_ and condemned any statement or acts against certain groups or people because of their religion or ethnicity," read the statement. In a New Year address translated into Arabic and distributed to Middle Eastern countries, Rasmussen said "free speech should be exercised in such a manner that we do not incite hatred and cause fragmentation of the community that is one of Denmark 's strengths." The IUMS said the "un-clear statements" were part of an attempt to avoid directly addressing the issue of the anti-prophet cartoons by speaking about minorities in general terms. "This hurts the feelings of hundreds of millions of Muslims around the world as well as those of the some 180,000 Danish Muslims who represent three percent of the population." The union asked Arab and Muslim governments to exercise all possible political and diplomatic pressures on the Danish and Norwegian governments to grind to a halt such organized anti-Islam campaigns. The IUMS was launched in July of last year in the British capital London as an independent body and a reference for all Muslims worldwide with prominent scholar Sheikh Yusuf Qaradawi as its chair. Al-Azhar, the highest seat of religious learning in the Sunni world, has vowed to raise the issue of the provocative caricatures with the UN and international human rights organizations. A five-member delegation representing 21 Islamic centers and organizations in Denmark has recently toured a number of Arab and Muslim countries to drum up support for their case. Abdel Rahman Abu Laban, a prominent Muslim figure in Denmark , told IOL on Friday, November 18, that the Muslim minority in Denmark wants to "internationalize" the issue of the cartoons to head off similar anti-Islam campaigns in the future. Islam is Denmark 's second largest religion after the Lutheran Protestant Church , which is actively followed by four-fifths of the country's population. http://www.islamonline.net/English/News/2006-01/21/article06.shtml(22 Jan 06) Find your next car at Yahoo! [IslamCity] DAJJAL EXPLOITS EMERGENCY AIDS MONEY TO CHRISTIANIZE AFRICA
Assalamu aleikum. For years, U.S. Christian evangelical organisations have been doing charitable, relief and recruiting work in Africa. And it appears to have paid off. In August 2004, The New Republic's Andrew Rice reported that the World Christian Encyclopedia noted that while 17 million Africans attended Pentecostal churches in 1970, that number had jumped to more than 125 million... roughly 19 percent of the continent's population. And demographers were predicting that the continent's Christian population will nearly double by 2025 to 633 million ... In his new role at USAID, Paul Bonicelli is in a position to help ensure that evangelical faith-based organisations, steeped in the reactionary politics of the Christian Right, receive a lion's share of money from Bush's Emergency Plan. - The sinister US Bureau for Democracy, Conflict and Humanitarian Assistance (BDCHA) deploys its goons worldwide in order to destabilize governments and societies that disagree with US policies. It is but one agency of USAID. There are a dozen others, all working to christianize Africa. For background information on BDCHA, see also: Supporting Human Rights and Democracy: The U.S. Record 2002-2003 http://wwwa.house.gov/international_relations/108/wint0709.htm --- Christian Groups Find New Allies at USAID Bill Berkowitz* IPS January 17, 2006 http://www.ipsnews.net/africa/nota.asp?idnews=1801 OAKLAND, California, Jan 17 (IPS) - The AIDS pandemic in Africa has provided an entry point for U.S.-based Christian evangelical organisations that view some of the small countries in that continent as an opportunity for religious, political and social transformation. Working in concert with these groups is the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). And that's where Paul Bonicelli comes in. In October, Bonicelli, the former dean of academic affairs at Patrick Henry College -- a small fundamentalist Christian college located in rural Virginia -- was appointed last October by the George W. Bush administration to oversee USAID programmes as the new deputy assistant administrator at the Bureau for Democracy, Conflict and Humanitarian Assistance. A USAID press release said his responsibilities will focus on four primary goals of strengthening the rule of law and respect for human rights; promoting more genuine and competitive elections and political processes; increasing development of a politically active civil society; and implementing a more transparent and accountable governance. While at first, Bonicelli's appointment appeared to be another example of the Bush administration's propensity to fill important positions with largely unqualified supporters, a posting at the Herescope blog argued that his ties to Patrick Henry College made the selection of Bonicelli highly significant because USAID has been a major player in the 'transformation' of the African continent. Herescope pays close attention to the activities of major U.S. Christian evangelical organisations in Africa, and its research places the appointment of Paul Bonicelli in a broader political context. Herescope is organised by the Discernment Research Group, a project of Discernment Ministries, Inc. In 1989, long-time pastors Travers and Jewel van der Merwe founded the ministry because they had become deeply concerned with what they perceived within the church as a radical shift away from the authority of Scripture. Herescope is dedicated to revealing heresies and false teachings affecting the Church today. In December 2002, via an executive order from Pres. Bush, a Centre for Faith-Based and Community Initiatives was established at USAID. The USAID Centre, like the others created at more than a dozen other U.S. agencies, aims to encourage faith-based groups to participate in its initiatives. In February 2004, Christianity Today magazine's deputy managing editor, Timothy C. Morgan, interviewed Anne Peterson -- a former missionary doctor to Zimbabwe and Zaire who was appointed by the Bush administration as head of global health for USAID. Among other issues, Morgan asked her about the administration's policies regarding AIDS in Africa, and for a comment on the work Christian evangelical groups were performing there. Peterson said that there's a huge role, for Christian groups because à [AIDS] is an issue that fits with the Christian message. And the prevention of AIDS fits with the righteous living and moral standpoint [of Christianity]. But equally important is the church's role in giving a message of forgiveness, of compassion, of caring for the sick, of caring for the widows and orphans, she added. There's almost no part of the AIDS epidemic where the faith orientation doesn't have a very, very strong message. A posting on the website of USAID underscores Peterson's remarks: Community and faith-based organisations have a critical role to play in the provision of HIV/AIDS prevention, care and treatment, it says. They possess an extensive
