[IslamCity] SUICIDE BY SMOKING

2006-02-17 Thread Saba Khan
Suicide by Smoking

Most Muslims are aware of and try to avoid the major
sins in Islam - murder, suicide, adultery, alcohol,
gambling, usury, etc. Muslims are forbidden to harm
themselves or others. Yet millions of Muslims all
over the world are doing just that - harming, even
killing themselves and their families. Islamic
scholars have historically had mixed views on the
subject, and the actions of these Muslims have not
been unanimously forbidden or even discouraged.

The danger is tobacco use - cigarette and cigar
smoking, chew, etc. The mixed views on the subject
came about because cigarettes are a more recent
invention and did not exist at the time of the
revelation of the Qur'an in the 7th century A.D.
Therefore, one cannot find a verse of Qur'an or words
of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) saying
clearly that Cigarette smoking is forbidden.
However, there are many instances where the Qur'an
gives us general guidelines, and calls upon us to use
our reason and intelligence, and seek guidance from
Allah about what is right and wrong. In the Qur'an,
Allah says, he [the Prophet] commands them what is
just, and forbids them what is evil; he allows them as
lawful what is good, and prohibits them from what is
bad... (Surah al-Ar'af 7:157). So what are the evils
of tobacco use, for your health and for your deen
(religion)?

1. Danger to your health

Allah says,...make not your own hands contribute to
your destruction...(Surah al-Baqarah 2:195, );...nor
kill yourselves... (Surah al-Nisaa 4:29). It is
universally understood that cigarette smoking causes a
number of health problems that often ultimately result
in death. Men who smoke contract lung cancer at 22
times the rate of non-smokers. Smokers are also
highly at risk for heart disease, emphysema, oral
cancer, stroke, etc. There are hundreds of poisonous
and toxic ingredients in the cigarette itself that the
smoker inhales straight into the lungs. In an
authentic hadith, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon
him) said that Whomsoever drinks poison, thereby
killing himself, will sip this poison forever and ever
in the fire of Jahannum (Hell). Over 3 million
people worldwide die from smoking-related causes each
year.

2. Danger to your family's health

In the Qur'an, Allah says: Those who annoy believing
men and women undeservedly bear on themselves a
glaring sin (Surat al-Ahzaab 33:58). And the Prophet
(peace be upon him) said that there should be neither
harming, nor reciprocating harm.? In another hadith,
the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Anyone who
believes in Allah and the Last Day should not hurt his
neighbour. Those around the smoker inhale what is
known as second-hand smoke - the unfiltered,
poisonous waste that goes in the air around the
smoker. There are over 4,000 chemicals in cigarette
smoke, over 40 of which are known to cause cancer.
Second-hand smoke causes or aggravates asthma,
bronchitis, and other respiratory problems, especially
in children.

3. Addictive

The addiction to tobacco is a physical response that
often interferes with one's life and worship. For
example, most Muslims are aware that it is forbidden
to smoke during the fasting days of Ramadan. Many of
these addicted smokers spend their fasting days
sleeping, cranky, and short-tempered, just counting
the hours until they can have their fix. There have
been times when the most severely addicted will wait
outside the masjid door for the adhaan, and break
their fast by lighting up, before taking even food or
water.

4. Noxious Smell

Muslims are advised to refrain from eating raw onions
and garlic - simply as a courtesy to those around
them. Nobody likes the smell. The same goes even
more so for the reek of cigarettes, which permeates
everything around the smoker - hair, clothing, home,
car, etc. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
whoever has eaten from such greens as garlic, onions
or leek should keep away from our mosque.? Many
smokers try to hide the smell by using breath mints or
perfume. This does not get rid of the smell, it only
masks it. Often the combination of smells is even
more nauseating.

5. Waste of Money

Allah says, ...But spend not wastefully (your wealth)
in the manner of a spendthrift. Verily spendthrifts
are brothers of the devils...?{Surah
al-Israa?17:26-27} And in an authentic hadith the
Prophet (peace be upon him) said that: Allah hates
for you three things: gossiping, begging, and wasting
money. In the U.S. and other countries, cigarettes
are taxed heavily in order to discourage this habit
and reimburse the government for the overwhelming
health care costs to care for those afflicted with
diseases caused by smoking. Smokers often spend
thousands of dollars a year that literally just go up
in smoke.

Recent Opinions of Scholars

In more recent times, as these dangers of tobacco use
have come to be proven beyond any doubt, scholars have
become more unanimous in pronouncing tobacco use
clearly

[IslamCity] mock trial of Bush, Blair and Sharon(http://weekly.ahram.org.eg/2006/781/eg3.htm)

2006-02-17 Thread S A Hannan

When noble verdicts are not enough
The former Malaysian prime minister was the presiding judge in a
mock trial of Bush, Blair and Sharon. Gamal
Nkrumah covered the not so normal proceedings

Last week, the mock trial of United States President George W Bush, British
Prime Minister Tony Blair and his ailing Israeli counterpart Ariel Sharon took
place in a basement hall of Cairo's dilapidated Lawyers' Union headquarters
building. Presiding over the tribunal was the former Malaysian Prime Minister
Mahathir Mohamed.
The evidence provided by the court enraged the spectators. Films were shown
and testimonies delivered. The entire hall was emotionally charged. The
charismatic Malaysian leader held the make-believe court spell-bound. "The court
found the accused persons guilty of gross human rights violations."
The panel of judges agreed that the leaders of the US, Britain and Israel
were guilty of crimes committed against humanity and were pronounced guilty of
bombing private houses, public buildings, hospitals and schools. They were also
found guilty of obstructing supplies of food and medicine, destroying water and
electricity supplies in Iraq, Palestine and elsewhere. They were found guilty of
the arrest, detention and torture of innocent civilians.
The judges said the leaders ought to be dumped into the "Hall of Infamy" for
all eternity.
Mahathir Mohamed's winning personality charmed his listeners and he did not
mince his words. "They are accused of refusing to give legal redress to
civilians," he explained. "These are crimes against peace and humanity. They
must be brought to book."
However, Mahathir conceded that the mock trial had no authority to enforce
the verdict. "This court has no power to make you face prosecution and have you
succumb to the prescribed sentence," he said.
"However, at least the mock trial provides a forum by which the international
community would know how much suffering the occupation and armed aggression of
the occupiers inflicted on the civilian populations," Mahathir told Al-Ahram
Weekly at the close of the trial. "At least this is an opportunity for
people in this part of the world to vent their frustration and air their
grievances," he added.
"People the world over are angry at the double standards of the US and are
determined to express their outrage at the manner in which the civilian
population of Iraq, Palestine and Afghanistan were treated," Mahathir said.
He agreed with most participants at the mock trial that the crimes committed
against humanity by the three leaders must not be forgotten or belittled.
Sameh Ashour, the head of the Arab Lawyers Union, concurred. He said that the
entire Arab and the Muslim worlds were incensed by the brutal way in which
Palestinians, Iraqis and Afghans were treated under occupation. "The gross
violations of the civilian population in these occupied countries are
despicable," he said.
British MP George Galloway for his constituency Bethnal Green was invited to
give evidence at the mock trial. Galloway was detained at Cairo International
Airport on the grounds that he constituted a threat to "Egyptian national
security," the British MP explained upon his release from a cell he was kept in
overnight.
Galloway was at first left bereft of food and drink at the VIP lounge of
Cairo Airport and then whisked away to a detention centre where he shared a
cramped space with some 35 mostly black African deportees. After a phone call
his credit ran out, but not before the British Embassy in Cairo was notified and
Galloway was visited by some of the organisers of the mock trial and by MP
Mustafa El-Fiqi, head of the foreign relations committee of the People's
Assembly.
After the intervention of the British Embassy in Cairo and top-level Egyptian
officials, Galloway was promptly released, but it was too late for him to take
part in the mock tribunal. The British MP maintains that he received a phone
call from President Hosni Mubarak who "apologised on behalf of the Egyptian
people". According to Galloway, President Mubarak told him that he was a "widely
respected freedom fighter and friend of the Arabs."
Galloway, who is also the leader of the leftist Respect Party, said that
"[Mubarak's phone call] was a most gracious apology which I accepted whole-
heartedly."
He said he would be visiting Egypt in the future and that once one drinks
from the waters of the River Nile, one is always bound to return to "this
beautiful country.
"I consider the matter now
closed."

Classification of Hadith According to a Hidden
Defect*

  By
  Sheikh Suhaib Hassan**

  Feb 14, 2006

Note: While citing the isnads below, the terms haddathana (he narrated to us), akhbarana (he informed
us) or sami`tu (I heard) will be represented by a double line thus (===),
while a single broken line (---) will replace the term `an (on the authority of).
Before discussing ma`lul (defective) hadiths, a brief note on
mudtarib (shaky) and maqlub (reversed) hadiths would help in
understanding ma`lul.
Mudtarib (Shaky
Hadiths)
According to Ibn Kathir, if reporters disagree about a particular sheikh
or about some other points in the isnad or the text in such a way that
none of the opinions can be preferred over the others, and thus there is
uncertainty about the isnad or text, such a hadith is called
mudtarib (shaky) (Ibn Kathir 72).
For example, with regard to idtirab (shakiness) in the
isnad, it is reported on the authority of Abu Bakr that he said, "O
Messenger of Allah! I see you getting gray-headed?" He (peace and blessings be
upon him) replied, "What made me gray-headed are Surat Hud and its sister
surahs." Ad-Daraqutni commented:

This is an example of a mudtarib hadith. It is
reported through Abu Ishaq, but as many as ten different opinions are held
about this isnad. Some report it as mursal, others as
muttasil (a hadith with uninterrupted chain of narrators); some take it
as musnad of Abu Bakr, others as musnad of Sa`d or `A'ishah.
Since all these reports are comparable in weight, it is difficult to prefer
one above another. Hence, the hadith is termed as mudtarib. (Ibn Kathir
  72)
As an example of idtirab in the text, Rafi` ibn Khadij said that
the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade the renting of
land. The reporters narrating from Rafi` give different statements as
follows:

  1. Hanzalah asked Rafi`, "What about renting for gold and
silver?" He replied, "It does not matter if it is rent for gold and
  silver."
  2. Rifa`ah --- Rafi` --- the Prophet (peace and blessings
be upon him), whosaid, "Whoever owns a piece of land should cultivate it, give
it to his brother to cultivate, or abandon it."
  3. Salim --- Rafi` --- his two uncles --- the Prophet
(peace and blessings be upon him), who forbade the renting of farming
  land.
  4. The son of Rafi` --- Rafi` --- the Prophet (peace and
blessings be upon him), who forbade the renting of land.
  5. A different narration by Rafi` from the Prophet (peace
and blessings be upon him), who said, "Whoever owns a piece of land should
either cultivate it or give it to his brother to cultivate. He must not rent
it for a third or a quarter of the produce, nor for a given quantity of the
  produce."
  6. Zaid ibn Thabit said, "May Allah forgive Rafi`! I am
more aware of the hadith than he; what happened was that two of the Ansar had
a dispute, so they came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who
said after listening to their cases, 'If this is your position, then do not
rent the farms.' Rafi` has only heard the last phrase, that is, 'Do not rent
  the farms'."
Because of these various versions, Ahmad ibn Hanbal said,

The hadiths reported by Rafi` about the renting of land
are mudtarib. They are not to be accepted, especially when they go
against the well-established hadith of Ibn `Umar that the Messenger of Allah
(peace and blessings be upon him) gave the land of Khaibar to the Jews on
condition that they work on it and take half of the produce. (Luqman As-Salafi
  381f)
Maqlub (Changed or Reversed)
A hadith is known as maqlub (changed, reversed) when its
isnad is grafted to a different text or vice versa, or if a reporter
happens to reverse the order of a sentence in the text.
As an example relating to the text, in his transmission of the famous
hadith describing the seven types of people who will be under the shelter of
Allah on the Day of Judgment, Muslim reports one of the categories as "a man
who conceals his act of charity to such an extent that his right hand does not
know what his left hand gives in charity." This sentence has clearly been
reversed by a reporter because the correct wording is recorded in other
narrations of both Al-Bukhari and Muslim as "... that his left hand does not
know what his right hand gives ..." (Ibn Kathir 88).
The famous trial of Al-Bukhari by the scholars of Baghdad provides a good
example of a maqlub isnad. The traditionists, in order to test
their visitor, Al-Bukhari, appointed 10 men, each with 10 hadiths. Each hadith

A large number of soldiers who were to be sent to Iraq deserted at the
last moment. New figures from Jyske Dragonregiment in Holstebro show,
that almost one-third of the soldiers from the Army's Reaktionsstyrke

the Prophet Muhammad are mainly responsible for the desertions.

I think that the meaning is completely clear, when at home around the

HKKF, Flemming D.V. Nielsen.

[IslamCity] How Should Muslims React to the Pictures / Cartoons

2006-02-17 Thread ` . . *Mina* . . `

How Should Muslims React to the Pictures / Cartoons

Muslims living as Muslim minorities around the world should act in a responsible manner and the following is suggested:1. Consult with Ulama and responsible people before doing anything. Do not do anything by yourself. Shura and consultation is vital in such an issue.
2. Express educated anger within the framework of the law of the country. Use the law of the country to its full capacity.3. Do not be violent in any way and do not burn buildings, cars, etc.4. Boycott all Danish products and products of anyone else who support Denmark in this issue or even sympathise with Denmark.
5. Do not confine _expression of anger to the cartoon issue. Use the opportunity to express the disgust on Islamophobia in general and highlight some pertinent issues.6. The most important in this is the issue of
Da'awah. Use the opportunity to explain to the world the great personality of Rasulullah [sallallaahu alayhi wasallam]. His lifestyle and character should be printed and published all around the world. This will be an eye opener to many ignorant people and a means of guidance. Take out the positive aspects from a negative one and use the situation to our advantage. Every Muslim should say and write something about our beloved Rasul [sallallaahu alayhi wasallam].
7. It is of utmost importance that we engage in lots of du'aa and Dhikr, Fasting and Sadaqaat. Make du'aa that Allah guide the Ummah in this trying times.8. Do not conduct ourselves with our fellow non-Muslim citizens in a way that offend them and look for an opportunity to get back at us. We will then be the cause of them showing disrespect to Islam and Islamic values.

Always express good character and conduct to all.9. The most important issue in expressing our love and honour for Rasulullah [sallallaahu alayhi wasallam] is following his Sunnah. Expressing our anger at the disrespect to Rasulullah [sallallaahu alayhi wasallam] is important but it will be hypocritical if we do not emulate the outward appearance, beard, dressing, etc. and noble character of Rasulullah [sallallaahu alayhi wasallam]. Every one should obtain a kitaab on the Sunnats of Rasulullah [sallallaahu alayhi wasallam] and implement that in our lives and pass this over to others.
10. Forward this email as wide as possible.and Allah Ta'ala Knows Best-- All praises and thanks be to Allah, Lord of everything that exists. The most Gracious, the Most
Merciful.Master of the Day of Judgment You (alone) we worship, and You (alone) we ask for help.Guide us to the Straight Way The Way of of those on whom You have bestowed Your Grace, not (the way) of those who earned Your Anger, nor those who went astray. Ameen

Some produce nothing but flames and poison in the sense that they make arrogant misuse of their power whenever they are given the opportunity, they are ostentatious in their expenditure, they aim at the destruction of those who are under their command, they are bitter and malignant towards those with whom they disagree; they are selfish, unjust and stubborn in their dealings.Such people have established an infernal industry within themselves. Whatever enters into them comes out in an evil form. They will find themselves engulfed by that which they produced. They will enter a fire of their
own making.Others respond to the possession of power in bumble manner. They are quick to acknowledge just criticism. They spend their wealth for the cause of God. They do not assert themselves when they get the opportunity, they prefer to adopt an attitude of humility and attribute all credit go God alone. They are just and benevolent towards those who are at their mercy.Such people have established God’s industry within themselves. Whatever enters into them is moulded into a divine form. [IslamCity] A permanent basis for staying in Iraq

2006-02-17 Thread Wolfgang Geist
http://www.atimes.com/atimes/Middle_East/HB16Ak01.html

A permanent basis for staying in Iraq
By Tom Engelhardt

We're in a new period in the war in Iraq - one that
brings to mind the Nixonian era of Vietnamization: a
president presiding over an increasingly unpopular war
that won't end; an election bearing down; the need to
placate a restive American public; and an army under
so much strain that it seems to be running off the
rails.

So it's not surprising that the media are now
reporting on administration plans for, or
speculation about, or signs of or hints of
major drawdowns or withdrawals of American troops.
The figure regularly cited these days is less than
100,000 troops in Iraq by the end of 2006. With about
136,000 American troops

there now, that figure would represent just over
one-quarter of all in-country US forces, which means,
of course, that the term major certainly rests in
the eye of the beholder.

In addition, these withdrawals are - we know this
thanks to a Seymour Hersh piece, Up in the air, in
the December 5 New Yorker - to be accompanied, as in
South Vietnam in the Richard Nixon era, by an
unleashing of the US Air Force. The added air power is
meant to compensate for any lost punch on the ground
(and will undoubtedly lead to more collateral damage
- that is, Iraqi deaths).

It is important to note that all promises of drawdowns
or withdrawals are invariably linked to the dubious
proposition that the administration of President
George W Bush can stand up an effective Iraqi army
and police force (think Vietnamization again),
capable of circumscribing the Sunni insurgency and so
allowing American troops to pull back to bases outside
major urban areas, as well as to Kuwait and points as
far west as the United States.

Further, all administration or military withdrawal
promises prove to be well hedged with caveats and
obvious loopholes, phrases like if all goes according
to plan and security improves ... or it also depends
on the ability of the Iraqis to ...

Since guerrilla attacks have actually been on the rise
and the delivery of the basic amenities of modern
civilization (electrical power, potable water, gas for
cars, functional sewage systems, working traffic
lights, and so on) on the decline, since the very
establishment of a government inside the heavily
fortified Green Zone has proved immensely difficult,
and since US reconstruction funds (those that haven't
already disappeared down one clogged drain or another)
are drying up, such partial withdrawals may prove more
complicated to pull off than imagined.

It's clear, nonetheless, that withdrawal is on the
propaganda agenda of an administration heading into
mid-term elections with an increasingly skittish
Republican Party in tow and congressional candidates
worried about defending the president's
mission-unaccomplished war of choice.

Under the circumstances, we can expect more hints of,
followed by promises of, followed by announcements of
major withdrawals, possibly including news in the
fall election season of even more massive
withdrawals slated for the end of 2006 or early 2007,
all hedged with conditional clauses and only ifs -
withdrawal promises that, once the election is over,
this administration would undoubtedly feel under no
particular obligation to fulfill.

Assuming, then, a near year to come of withdrawal
buzz, speculation and even a media blitz of withdrawal
announcements, the question is: how can anybody tell
if the Bush administration is actually withdrawing
from Iraq or not?

Sometimes, when trying to cut through a veritable fog
of misinformation and disinformation, it helps to
focus on something concrete. In the case of Iraq,
nothing could be more concrete - though less generally
discussed in our media - than the set of enormous
bases the Pentagon has long been building in that
country.

Quite literally, multibillions of dollars have gone
into them. In a prestigious engineering magazine in
late 2003, Lieutenant-Colonel David Holt, the army
engineer tasked with facilities development in Iraq,
was already speaking proudly of several billion
dollars being sunk into base construction (the
numbers are staggering). Since then, the
base-building has been massive and ongoing.

In a country in such startling disarray, these bases,
with some of the most expensive and advanced
communications systems on the planet, are like vast
spaceships that have landed from another solar system.
Representing a staggering investment of resources,
effort and geostrategic dreaming, they are the
unlikeliest places for the Bush administration to hand
over willingly to even the friendliest of Iraqi
governments.

If, as just about every expert agrees, Bush-style
reconstruction has failed dismally in Iraq, thanks to
thievery, knavery and sheer incompetence, and is now
essentially ending, it has been a raging success in
Iraq's Little America. For the first time, we have
actual descriptions of a couple of the super-bases
built in Iraq

[IslamCity] Muslims Beware of WMD - Weapons of Missionary Deception - Part 2

2006-02-17 Thread Adel Elsaie

First, the twelve disciples were instructed by Jesus to share their faith with the Jews: Matthew 10:5-6 "Go nowhere among the Gentiles, and enter no town of the Samaritans, but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”And Jesus stated clearly that he was sent only to the Jews:Matthew 15:24 "He (Jesus) answered: I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel."The missionaries did not succeed in converting all the Jews. So, against the above statements by Jesus, the writers of the Gospels decided that Christianity was a missionary religion to the end of the earth:Matthew 28:19-20. This verse is called the “Great Commission” “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the
Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”Acts 1:8 “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."Trinities were all over the Middle East and its surrounding. Eusebius of Caesarea (283-371 CE) wrote: "The religion of Jesus Christ is neither new nor strange." This made the job of the early Christian missionaries relatively easy. They were converting people from one form of trinity to another. The present day missionaries do not have the same luxury as their forerunners; their job is quite difficult, and consequently deception is their most effective way to get results.Following their old tradition, Christian missionaries are pouring into Muslim and non-Muslim countries
“proclaiming the good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ,” Acts 8:12. They are distributing Bibles, cassettes, videos and religious leaflets designed to "save" non-Christians from their "false" religion. Christian Missionaries on one hand preach high moral teachings of Jesus, yet at the same time, they follow deceptive strategy in order to convert people to their religion. Missionaries especially fool the poor, sick, illiterate, people in rural areas, and unreligious people under the guise of helping them in this life and saving them in the hereafter. They push to convert these people because they are the most vulnerable and therefore most likely to fall for their deception. They also prey on people subjected to human catastrophe whether it is famine, war, Tsunami, or earthquake. These deceptive methods are used simply because the honest upfront approach did not prove as effective as the Christian missionaries thought they were
In 2004, Mother Jones magazine reported a scene at Columbia International University in South Carolina that demonstrates an unnerving ethical elasticity. "Did Jesus ever lie?" asks a lecturer. His class replies, "No." "But did Jesus raise his hand and say, 'I swear to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth?'" Again, 20 voices call out, "No!" (The instructor confirms the quote but says that it was taken out of context.) One of the basic arguments raised by Christian Missionaries is the framework of Jesus-Father-Crucifixion-Salvation. This is how it goes: “The Father crucified his son Jesus for my salvation. So I am saved by believing in Jesus, and you too can be saved. So believe like I believe.” However, in Islam, one can earn salvation by believing first in One God and his Prophets including Jesus and by good deeds. But Christian missionaries are highly trained individuals. They do not explain Christianity, because they can’t. They
practice the shortest way to score a hit. No mention about the confusing Trinity. No mention about ancient mythical gods that had similar life stories like that of Jesus. No mention about the untold history of the early Christianity, and the early Christian sects. No mention about the 50 or so different versions of the Bible. No mention about the deleted verses of the Bible. No mention that crucial verses were added sixteen centuries after Jesus. No mention about the serious contradictions in the Bible. No mention about the Ecumenical Councils of Church and their political decisions. No mention about the Church that they belong to, and certainly no mention about other Churches. Some missionaries call this “heavenly deception”. This is in spite of: Jeremiah 48:10 “Cursed be he that doeth the work of the LORD deceitfully” (KJV) For more about WMD, pleaselook at http://www.usislam.org/ Secton "WMD"

A
senior Hamas leader is on a surprise visit to Ankara for talks with Turkish
diplomats.

Turkey
said they would use the meeting with Khalid Mishaal, the exiled supreme leader
of Hamas, on Thursday to put forward international demands for
theresistance group to renounce violence.A Turkish foreign
ministry statement said: "The expectations of the international community
following the Palestinian elections will be clearly conveyed during the talks,"
adding that Hamas had asked to send a delegation to Turkey.Mishaal is on a tour
to muster support from Muslim states to counter Western governments' efforts to
step up the pressure on the party that won last month's Palestinian
elections.FalloutThe Ankara visit, the first of Mishaal's current tour to a
non-Arab country, came following an offer by Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the Turkish
prime minister,to act as go-between for Israel and the
new Palestinian administration. The talks are likely to upset
Turkey's allies, the
United States and Israel,
both of which are seeking to maintain the group's international isolation.
Israel has categorically ruled out
any talks with Hamas as long as it remains committed to the destruction of the
Jewish state. The Israeli government was infuriated by Russian President
Vladimir Putin's decision earlier this month to invite Hamas to talks in
Moscow.Turkey, a predominantly Muslim but strictly
secular state, has been Israel's main regional ally since 1996 when the
two countries signed a military cooperation accord, much to the anger of
Iran and Arab countries.But
it also enjoys close relations with the Palestinians and supports their claim
for statehood.Party inviteMishaal, who is
heading a five-man delegation, was meeting with Turkish diplomats
includingAhmet Uzumcu, the foreign ministry's deputy under-secretary, and
Bozkurt Aran, the head of the ministry's Middle
East department. The Hamas leader, who is based in Syria,
has also requested to meet Erdogan, sources said, but it was not immediately
clear whether the meeting would take place.

  Erdogan has offered
  tomediatebetween Israel and
HamasAnatolia news agency said the
Hamas delegation had not been invited to Turkey through
diplomatic channels, while NTV and CNN-Turk news channels said the invitation
came from the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP).A Turkish
official source said both the United
States and Israel had been informed of the
visit.Eager
for his country to play a more prominent role in the Middle East peace process,
Erdogan last month said Turkey was ready to mediate between Israel
and Hamas. But he also urged Hamas to renounce violence and work with
Israel.The
United States and the
European Union have listed Hamas as a terrorist organisation and argue that it
must renounce violence and recognise Israel if it wants to form the next
government in the Palestinian territories.

If you want to understand Muslim's rage about those caricatures characterizing Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), you should know about this person first.
And it would be more truthful and unbiased to you, if you ask non Muslims.
So let's ask Mahatma Ghandi,Lamartine, Michael H.Hart, Sir George Bernard Shaw and much more.

Muhammad in Their Eyes
Quotes from Renowned World Thinkers about the Prophet of Islam

In the Encyclopedia Britannica it is stated that:
"Muhammad is the most successful of all Prophets and religious personalities."

" A mass of detail in the early sources show that he was an honest
and upright man who had gained the respect and loyalty of others who were
like-wise honest and upright men." (Vol. 12)

John Austin says:
"In little more than a year he was actually the spiritual, nominal and temporal rule of Medina, with his hands on the lever that was to shake the world." Source: John Austin "Muhammad the Prophet of Allah," in T.P.'s and Cassel's Weekly for 24th September 1927.

John William Draper says:
"Four years after the death of Justinian, A.D. 569, was born at Mecca, in Arabia the man who, of all men exercised the greatest influence upon the human race . . Mohammed . . ."
Source: John William Draper, A History of the Intellectual Development of Europe, London 1875, Vol. 1, pp. 329-330.

Mahatma Gandhi, speaking on the character of Muhammad, (pbuh) says in (Young India):

"I wanted to know the best of one who holds today's undisputed sway over the hearts of millions of mankindI became more than convinced that it was not the sword that won a place for Islam in those days in the scheme of life. It was the rigid simplicity, the utter self-effacement of the Prophet, the scrupulous regard for his pledges, his intense devotion to this friends and followers, his intrepidity, his fearlessness, his absolute trust in God and in his own mission. These and not the sword carried everything before them and surmounted every obstacle. When I closed the 2nd volume (of the Prophet's biography), I was sorry there was not more for me to read of the great life."

Thomas Carlyle in his (Heroes and Hero-worship), was simply amazed as to:
"How one man single-handedly, could weld warring tribes and wandering Bedouins into a most powerful and civilized nation in less than two decades."

Diwan Chand Sharma wrote:
"Muhammad was the soul of kindness, and his influence was felt and never forgotten by those around him."(D.C. Sharma, The Prophets of The East, Calcutta, 1935, pp. 12)

In the words of Prof. C. Snouck Hurgronje:
"The league of nations founded by the prophet of Islam put the principle of international unity and human brotherhood on such universal foundations as to show candle to other nations." He continues: "The fact is that no nation of the world can show a parallel to what Islam has done towards the realization of the idea of the League of Nations."

Prof. Ramakrishna Rao says:
"The personality of Muhammad, it is most difficult to get into the whole truth of it. Only a glimpse of it I can catch. What a dramatic succession of picturesque scenes! There is Muhammad, the Prophet. There is Muhammad, the Warrior; Muhammad, the Businessman; Muhammad, the Statesman; Muhammad, the Orator; Muhammad, the Reformer; Muhammad, the Refuge of Orphans; Muhammad, the Protector of Slaves;

Why are Paintings of Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) Sacrilegious?

Mike Ghouse

When Islam reached its potential bringing the entire Arabian
Peninsula into its fold, Prophet Mohammad became the statesman, the
general and the religious leader.

His teachings of belief in one God, equality of humankind and seeking
spirituality made his followers put him on the pedestal. As has
happened with all the great prophets, people were considering even
the dirt he walked on as holy.

Even to this day, we hang pictures; make statues of our heroes and
our leaders. Every king of era, or head of a town or state, had his
portraits in public places and some of them had their statutes placed
in every town. At that time period, people had the habit of making
individuals divine.

Although he was the chosen one to deliver the message of God to
mankind, the Prophet himself remained a simple soul. A few things
relating to the subject about him;

In one of his sermons, he had said, that I am as human as you are,
and when I die, please do not bury me in a special grave, bury me in
an unmarked grave like every one else.

I am a mortal and a messenger, the only one you have to worship is
God and not anyone else.

He stressed on individual responsibility to the point that he said to
his own daughter that, on the day of reckoning, it will be her own
deeds that will be her salvation.

He lived a simple life, although he had the whole world to him, he
chose to live in a small house and with no material accumulation. He
was the King, but he did not live in opulence, he wanted to lead a
spiritual life by example.

Does every Muslim follow his teachings to the Core? No! We are humans
and we do make mistakes, an allowance has been made by God through
the concept of forgiveness.

Can the world make judgments about Islam and Muslims with the acts of
less than 1/10th of one percent of Muslims? (1% of 1.3 Billion == 13
Million – 10th of a percent comes to 1.3 Million – state department
had released figures last year that about 450,000 people have
enlisted in organizations that believe in violence. It is 1/30th of
1% and to call the protest a representation of Muslims is grossly
flawed.

The prophet saw the dangers in misplaced divinity, he wanted people
to worship the one supreme God and not put any one or anything else
on par with him. By the way, as in other faiths, God does not have a
gender in Islam.

He made a ruling that no one should paint his portrait, or put up his
statue anywhere, he was making a strong point that people should, at
not time make any mortal human, the divine. Only God is to be
worshipped and no one else.

Over the years, Muslims have guarded this principle with great care.
You will never see a Muslim worship any one but God. Muslims draw
their pride in his teachings of equality, simplicity and
spirituality. This is one simple reason why Muslims consider any
painting of the prophet as sacrilegious. When Muslims stand shoulder
to shoulder to pray to God, all distinctions between intellectuals
and ordinary, rich or poor vanish, and when they chant Alla hu Akbar,
i.e., God is Great, they are saying we are mortals and all of us are
on par, and only God is great. It is to bring humility every time we
recite Alla hu Akbar.

Those of you who would like to learn about the Prophet thru a western
scholar, please read Muhammad by Karen Armstrong, it is available
at all the bookstores.

{Invite (mankind, O Muhammad ) to the Way of your Lord (i.e. Islam) with wisdom

Guantanamo ethicsThe US should bring all prisoners being held in Guantanamo Bay to an independent trial or release them, the United Nations has said in a report. The 54-page report, summarising an investigation by five UN experts, on Thursday called on the US government "to close down the Guantanamo Bay detention centre and to refrain from any practice amounting to torture or cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment." For his part,
Kofi Annan, the UN secretary-general, said on Thursday the US should close prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, as soon as possible. Annan said he didn't necessarily agree with everything in the report but he did support its opposition to people being held in perpetuity without being charged and giving a chance to explain themselves in a court. "I think sooner or later there will be a need to close the Guantanamo, and I think it will be up to the government to decide, and hopefully to do it as soon as is possible," the UN chief said. But the US ambassador to UN offices in Geneva, Kevin Moley, responded that the investigation had taken little account of evidence provided by the United States, and that the five UN experts rejected an invitation to visit Guantanamo. In a response that was included at the end of the report, Moley said: "It is particularly
unfortunate that the special rapporteurs rejected the invitation and that their unedited report does not reflect the direct, personal knowledge that this visit would have provided." A preliminary version of the report was leaked earlier this week before it included the US comment. The US is currently holding about 490 men at the US military detention centre on the southeastern tip of Cuba. Taliban-al-Qaida links The detainees are accused of having links to Afghanistan's ousted Talibangovernment oral-Qaida, though only a handful have been charged since the mission opened in January 2001. The White House on Thursday rejected the recommendation to shut the prisoncamp, saying the document was a discredit to the organisation. "These are dangerous
terrorists that we're talking about that are there," White House spokesman Scott McClellan said. The spokesman dismissed the UN report as "a rehash" of allegations that have been made previously by lawyers for some Guantanamo detainees, saying the military treats all detainees humanely. False allegations "We know that al-Qaida terrorists are trained in trying to disseminate false allegations," McClellan said. He said the UN makes many serious investigations of human rights abuse but "this was not one of them. There have beenmany
protestsagainstGuantanamo detentions The five UN experts who authored the report had sought invitations from the US to visit Guantanamo Bay since 2002. Three were invited last year, but refused in November after being told they could not interview detainees. Only the International Committee of the Red Cross has been allowed to visit Guantanamo's detainees, but the organisation keeps its findings confidential, reporting them solely to the detaining power. Some reports have been leaked by what the organisation calls third parties. The UN report's findings, which were being made public, were based on interviews with former detainees, public documents, media reports, lawyers and a questionnaire filled out by the US government. Use of violence The treatment of detainees
during transport and the use of violence when they resisted amounted to torture, the UN report said. Although the investigators did not visit Guantanamo, they said photographic evidence - corroborated by testimony of former prisoners - showed that detainees were shackled, chained, hooded and forced to wear earphones and goggles. They said prisoners were beaten, stripped and force shaved if they resisted. "Such treatment amounts to torture, as it inflicts severe pain or suffering on the victims for the purpose of intimidation and/or punishment"UN report The report said: "Such
treatment amounts to torture, as it inflicts severe pain or suffering on the victims for the purpose of intimidation and/or punishment." Some of the interrogation techniques used at the detention facility itself - particularly the use of dogs, exposure to extreme temperatures, sleep deprivation for several consecutive days and prolonged isolation - caused
