RE: [IslamCity] Women's Driving in Saudi Arabia - Why Bring in Religion to the Debate

2006-02-23 Thread Syed Ghaziuddin

Dear brother Ali Assalaam
Alaikum,

After going through your
article I felt that I should put some points which raised in my mind.

Firstly I want to make it
clear that religion covers almost all of the aspects of life i.e. Social,
Economic, Political, Industrial, Personal etc. etc. This issue is a long
discussed one in the community. In the light of current situation where you see,
if a lonely girl or a lady even with children awaiting a taxi, many private
cars bunk their horn first and stop at her to check the chances of taking her
with them. When women get on the driving seat you will see more problems on the
road. Leave the young people the aged ones will make more advances to the lady
driver. Naturally you need lady police officers to control in case of women
drivers. Also in case of traffic accidents it will be difficult to handle if a
lady driver is injured at any point. Either you have to wait till a lady cop
comes or you have to help the injured lady. Women's joblessness will be solved
to a certain extent but in police stations also you have to create a separate
cell for lady police officers. Wherever you find men and women mixed together
you will face social problems of all types. We cannot deny that there are good
and bad in every community and gender.

I think if you are
willing to allow women to drive you have to cover all related topics before
hand so that you will not be at the junction of problems. I agree that for
every problem there is a solution provided you are just in nature.

Hope the able advisers to
the authorities will give wise suggestions for a peaceful society.

Womens Driving: Why Bring in Religion to the Debate?
  Ali Al-Khoshaiban, Arab News

  http://www.arabnews.com/?page=7section=0article=65849d=24m=6y=2005

  Before you start a
dialogue with Arabs, laymen or scholar, you have to convince them that a
world outside their narrow perceptions exists, according to a Palestinian
writer. Keeping this in mind makes it easy to understand the conflicts and
  differences in our society.

  Islam,
as we know, has things which are clearly permitted and things which are not.
Unfortunately society has mixed these clear matters up with others that may
or may not be permitted. Many scholars will not even consider you a human
being because in their description, a human being is something totally
different from you. You must therefore prove to him t hat you are one of
those who live on this planet in the midst of the scholar and his idea of
  human beings.

  The heated exchanges
over the matter of permitting women to drive reveal a society incapable of
dealing with social realities and understanding change. It is alleged,
wrongly of course, that Islam breeds terrorism. But the ideas being advocated
by several Islamic scholars support these misconceptions. Their style of
thinking does not tolerate any dissenting voice on any matter. Such minds
understand only a monopoly and only a clear and inflexible truth.

  Terrorism in all its
diverse forms is, undoubtedly, a temporary or permanent reaction to some
ideas, groups or methods springing from a narrow environment. It struggles
against all opposing views and differing thoughts and aims at a single
viewpoint and decision. A terrorist group that promotes murder and
destruction is dangerous. Even more dangerous is the intellectual terrorism
that targets killing the freedom of thought and _expression_ of both the
individual and society. Intellectual terrorism aims at the total destruction
of all social achievements. It is an irony that terrorism utilizes the
facilities, regulations and broad values of society to suppress those who
  differ with the terrorists.

  The controversy over
the issue of womens driving is an example of the danger of mixing
social issues with religious ones. The motive is to ban women driving with
the help of a religious fatwa so that all discussion on the subject would be
conclusively ended. Driving, however, is only a worldly matter and is far
from religion. What is halal (lawful or permitted) and what is
haraam (unlawful or not permitted) are very clearly defined by
the Prophet (peace be upon him) who also said You know better about
  worldly matters.

  The debate about wo men
driving has crossed all reasonable limits. Society has found itself up
against the impossible task of solving the serious problems of modern life
with the instruments of traditional customs and traditional thinking. The

[IslamCity] ISLAMIC LEADER CALLS FOR BOYCOTT AND CONDEMNATION OF GREENSBORO NEWSPAPER Islami

2006-02-23 Thread badi323

ISLAMIC LEADER CALLS
FOR BOYCOTT AND CONDEMNATION OF GREENSBORO NEWSPAPER
Islamic leader Badi Ali called for the cancellation of advertising contracts with the Rhinoceros Times for its "flagrant and senseless attack on all faithful Muslims and their leader, the Prophet Muhammad."

"Not only does the newspaper show a shameful lack of editorial good sense, it shows a deep disrespect for people who are attempting to repair the dangerous damage done by some Danish cartoonists," the Greensboro-based sheikh declared.

Badi Ali is president of Muslims for a Better North Carolina and former Imam-President of the Islamic Center of the Triad.

Greensboro’s Rhinoceros Times has taken the "journalistically irresponsible" step of publishing two of "the interculturally irresponsible Danish cartoons which provoked major Muslim demonstrations around the world," Badi Ali explained.

"We do not know whether the newspaper reprinted the cartoons to exacerbate the earlier provocation, expand and promote its already wide circulation, or offend Greensboro Muslims. We do know, however, that the Rhinoceros Times commited what constitutes major offense against responsible freedom of the press and the Beloved Community of which Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., spoke," Badi Ali said.

"We call on all people of good will and faith to boycott and condemn the newspaper by canceling advertising and withholding readership. We cannot sit by as people of good will and do nothing.

"Furthermore, we demand apologies from the publisher, William Hammer, and the editor, Don Hammer, for the insult to Islam, apologies to all of Greensboro’s peacemakers, one-community advocates, and civic leaders.

"The Rhinoceros Times has yelled Fire! in the crowded theater. American jurisprudence recognizes that so yelling fire is wrongful and repugnant. What is worse is that the cartoons published in the Rhinoceros Times risks the killing of Greensboro’s reputation as a city of compassion, understanding, and leadership against insensitivity."

The Rhinoceros Times is a free distribution weekly "intended to entertain and inform" its readers "world-wide." It is published in Greensboro and Charlotte and is a member of the North Carolina Press Association.

"It is not humorous to flaunt such religious and social bigotry, hatred, and ignorance"

"It grieves me as an American and long-time citizen of Greensboro to see a prominent Greensboro businessman and newspaperman foolishly demonstrate such poor taste, poor journalism, poor sense, reckless indecency, and aimless jingoism.

"The God of Islam, Judaism and Christianity expects us all to do better by each other than to ridicule his messengers and prophets."

[IslamCity] Jimmy Swaggart post Deedat debate

2006-02-23 Thread khan zahid

Nazam Iqbal wrote: May Allah Guide him and us. 21 Februaryhttp://newssearch.bbc.co.uk/onthisday/hi/dates/stories/february/21/newsid_2565000/2565197.stm1988: TV evangelist quits over sex scandalJimmy Swaggart, America's leading television evangelist, has resigned from his ministry after it was revealed he had been consorting with a prostitute. In front of a congregation of 7,000 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, he sobbed and confessed to "moral failure" without actually going into any detail.
I have sinned against you and I beg your forgivenessJimmy Swaggart "I do not plan in any way to whitewash my sin or call it a mistake," he told shocked members of his
Family Worship Centre. Turning to his wife, Frances, he said: "I have sinned against you and I beg your forgiveness." Mr Swaggart's confession is all the more scandalous since he himself unleashed fire and brimstone against rival TV evangelist Rev Jim Bakker a few months ago for committing adultery with minister and secretary Jessica Hahn. Rev Bakker was subsequently defrocked and fired from his multi-million-dollar Praise the Lord TV station. This time it was Mr Swaggart's turn to repent after officials from the Assemblies of God church were given photographs showing him taking a prostitute to a Louisiana motel. They were handed in by rival TV evangelist Martin Gorman who was also defrocked after Mr Swaggart accused him of "immoral dalliances" in 1986. Mr Gorman, who ran a successful TV show from New Orleans, had launched an unsuccessful $90m law suit against Mr Swaggart two years ago for spreading false rumours. He also suggested Mr
Swaggart was trying to undermine rival TV shows. Big business TV evangelism is certainly a lucrative business. The Jimmy Swaggart Hour is watched by up to two million families and donations raised amount to about $150m a year. After the Bakker scandal, donations from the faithful dropped dramatically and the same is likely to happen to Jimmy Swaggart's show. The resignation will also displease Republican presidential contender Rev Pat Robertson. He is currently trying to drum up support in the "Bible Belt" southern states ahead of the Super Tuesday primaries on 8 March. Rev Robertson has threatened to sue anyone who calls him a TV evangelist and prefers to be described as a businessman. Your Memories?Write your account of the events. made a tearful confessionMichael MacMillan reports on Jimmy Swaggart defying the church to preach once more
 - May 1988 In Context Four days later Debra Murphree, the prostitute photographed with Jimmy Swaggart, told a New Orleans TV show he was a regular customer but insisted they had not had sex. She said he liked to watch her undress. Along with his son Donnie, Jimmy Swaggart continues to broadcast to 30 countries but
viewer numbers are not what they used to be when he was preaching to more than 100 nations around the world. Pat Robertson at first said the Swaggart scandal was engineered by his rival Vice-President George Bush to scupper his chances of entering the White House. A week later, Mr Roberston retracted this accusation and flew to Louisiana for a public show of support for the shamed religious TV star. Mr Robertson's presidential bid failed but in 1989 he launched the Christian Coalition, a conservative Christian pressure group that has some influence in the Republican Party. Al-salaamu alaykum wa

Narated By Abu Huraira(may Allaah be pleased with
him) : The Prophet(peace and blessings of
Allaah be upon him) said, "Faith (Belief) consists of more than sixty
branches (i.e. parts). And Haya (This term "Haya" covers a large number
of concepts which are to be taken together; amongst them are self
respect, modesty, bashfulness, and scruple, etc.) is a part of faith."

Narated By
'Abdullah (bin
'Umar)(may
Allaah be pleased with him) : Once Allah's Apostle(peace and blessings of Allaah be upon
him) passed by an Ansari (man) who was admonishing to
his brother regarding Haya'. On that Allah's Apostle(peace and blessings of Allaah be upon
him) said, "Leave him as Haya'
is a part of faith." (See Hadith No. 8)

[IslamCity] Somalia starving under heavy pressure of American anti Islamic Court

2006-02-23 Thread Labbayk YaMahdi

Somalia starving under heavy pressure of American's anti Islamic court US in New Policy On Somalia As Pirates Threaten Indian OceanThe East African (Nairobi) February 21, 2006 Posted to the web February 21, 2006 Abdulkadir KhalifNairobi Relatives of 10 alleged Somali pirates have said that the suspects were innocent fishermen. The men in question were captured by US naval soldiers who came to rescue MV Safinat Al-Basarat, an Indian boat, which
together with its 16 crew members, was allegedly being highjacked by the Somalis. "Our sons and brothers were not hooded men committing sinfu! l acts. They were on a fishing trip in Somalia's territorial waters," claimed a man interviewed by a local FM Radio station. "Foreigners have no right to apprehend people who venture into the ocean to feed their families through humble fishing activities," added another relative. The 10 Somalis were reportedly captured while on board MV Safinat Al-Basarat. They were airlifted to Mombasa harbour and held in custody by the Kenyan police. The legality of how to try them in court has been causing acrimony. The prosecutors in Kenya say that the pirates can be tried anywhere in the world, including Kenya, because of the international nature of the charges against them. The defence, however, insist that Kenya is not equipped to try
suspects of piracy. Somalia: Thousands Displaced As Mogadishu Clashes ContinueEmail This Page Print This Page
UN Integrated Regional Information Networks February 21, 2006 Posted to the web February 21, 2006 Nairobi Thousands of people have fled the northern and northeastern suburbs of the Somali capital, Mogadishu, since clashes between militia groups started over the weekend, a to! p city official said. An estimated 1,500 families had been displaced by the continuing clashes, Mogadishu Mayor, Ibrahim Omar Shaaweye, told IRIN on Tuesday. Some 25 people had been killed and 150 wounded, he added. "There was a flood of people pouring out of the Dayniile and Gubta areas [in north and northeastern Mogadishu and the epicenter of the fighting] this morning [Tuesday], looking for safety," the mayor said. "Almost all the dead and wounded were civilians," said a hospital worker. "Many of them, women and children," he added. "The casualty figures are expected to go higher once the fighting stops, yet we
still have no figures of the dead for the fighting groups." The conflict, which started on Saturday, pits armed militias who are reportedly loyal to a new alliance of faction leaders against those of! the Islamic courts. The newly created coalition - the Alliance for Peace and Fight Against International Terrorism - comprises several Mogadishu-based faction leaders. Its members include, among others, Muhammad Qanyare Afrah, Muse Sudi Yalahow, Omar Finnish, Bashir Raghe and Abdirashid Shire Ilqeyte. Shaaweye told IRIN by telephone that the fighting on Tuesday was "less intense" than the previous day, but "shells were landing in a number of places". A few businesses had reopened, and there were some buses on the road. Schools had not reopened due to the uncertainty of the situation, he said. He added elders and civil society groups were
speaking with both sides and trying to reach a ceasefire. "I am hopeful that within the next few hours we will have a permanent truce," the Mayor said. However, Hassan Ade, a local resident, said city ! dwellers were bracing themselves for a continuation of the fighting. "Both sides are reportedly receiving reinforcements and have been buying ammunition in the market, so everyone expects the fighting to intensify." The violence erupted when armed militias reportedly loyal to Mogadishu militia leader, Abdi Nure Siyad, also known as "Abdi Wal", attacked those loyal to Islamic courts located in a former military academy south of city. Siyad denied starting the violence. Witnesses said militiamen had used rocket-propelled grenades, heavy machineguns, small caliber guns and
mortar shells. [ This report does not necessarily reflect the views of the United Nations ]There is an overwhelming consensus tha! t the Somalis could be tried in Kenya, the country nearest the crime scene or in India where the ship and crew belong. Others suggest that the suspected pirates could be tried at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba by the American legal system because US soldiers reportedly apprehended them. Somalis have been following the events with keen interest. "I have never heard of an operation as swift as this with pirates captured within hours of a distress signal being sent out, then quickly airlifted to Kenya with a quick arrangement of a trial," Hassan Hussein Weli, a resident of Karan district in Mogadishu observed. But many Somalis wonder why there are so few details released
about the boat. Who owned it? Where was it registered? What was the

[IslamCity] Development of Embryo in the Qur'an and the Hadith

2006-02-23 Thread Nazish Azmi

Development of Embryo in the Qur'an and the Hadith* By Sheikh `Abdul-Majeed
Az-ZindaniMarch 30, 2005 Studying the texts of the Qur'an and the Hadith, many scientists get amazed by the accurate scientific facts mentioned in them. Among those who were taken by surprise is Dr. Joe Leigh Simpson, Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Genecology, and Professor of Molecular and Human Genetics at the Baylor College of Medicine, Houston. When we first
met him, Professor Simpson insisted on verifying the Qur’an and the Sunnah. We were able, however, to remove his suspicion. We presented to him the text outlining the development of the embryo. We proved to him that the Qur’an informs us that the hereditary and the chromosomal make-up of the new being take place only after a successful union between the sperm and the ovum. As we know, these chromosomes contain all the characteristics which the new human being will have such as the color of the eyes, skin, hair, etc. Hence, many of the details in the human being’s make-up are determined in his chromosomes. These chromosomes begin to form during the early Nutfah stage of embryonic development. In other words, the distinguishing features of the new human being are determined from the very beginning at the Nutfah stage. Allah, the Most Exalted, the Most Glorified, has
stated this fact in the Qur’an: [Woe to man! how ungrateful? From what stuff has He created him? From a sperm-drop: He has created him, and then molded him in due proportion.] (`Abasa 80: 17-19) During the first 40 days of gestation, all the body parts and organs are completely, though consecutively, formed. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has informed us in a Hadith that: “In every one of you, all components of your creation are gathered together in your mothers’ womb by 40 days.” (Reported by al-Bukhari and Muslim). In another Hadith, Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “When
forty-two nights have passed over the drop (Nutfah), Allah sends an angel to it, who shapes it and makes its ears, eyes, skin, flesh and bones. Then he says, “O Lord, is it male or female?” and your Lord decides what he wishes.” (Reported by Muslim). Professor Simpson studied these two Hadiths extensively, noting that the first 40 days constitute a clearly distinguishable stage of embryo genesis. He was particularly impressed by the absolute precision and accuracy of those Hadiths. Then during one of the conferences which he attended he gave the following opinion: “So, the two Hadiths that have been noted can provide us with a specific time table for the main embryological development before 40 days. Again, the point had been made repeatedly by other speakers this morning that these Hadiths could not have been obtained on the basis of the scientific knowledge that was
available at the time of their recording." Professor Simpson added: "It follows, I think, that not only is there no conflict between genetics and religion, but in fact religion can guide science by adding revelation to some traditional scientific approaches. There exist statements in the Qur’an shown by science to be valid, which supports knowledge in the Qur’an having been derived from Allah.Surah Isra 17:80 Say: "O my Lord! let my entry be by the Gate of Truth and Honor and likewise my exit by the Gate of Truth and Honor; and grant me from Thy Presence an authority to aid (me)."
17:81"And say, Truth has (now) arrived, and falsehood perished: For falsehood is (by its nature) bound to perish." Insha Allaah, this email will find you in the best of Imaan, Health Peace of mind. Fi AmaanAllaah.

[IslamCity] OPIN: Punishment for anti-Semitism Freedom of Speech for Islamophobia

2006-02-23 Thread Abdul Alim

"While it is fitting that Irving was punished for this (Holocaust denial) crime,it is surprising that the same countries that punish those who commitanti-Semitism cannot understand why Muslims are offended by the Danishcartoons. The fact that it becomes an issue of a"free speech" when Muslimsare involved, and an odious offense when other religious groups areconcerned smacks clearly ofIslamophobia." In the name of Allah, the most Merciful, the most Mercy-Giving SoundVision.com Newsletter
 || Islamic Information and Products (tm) Tuesday Feburary 21, 2006, Muharram 22, 1427 AH|| http://www.soundvision.com Assalamu Alaikum:This week brought the sad and disturbing news of the burning of churchesand more deaths in Turkey and Nigeria in connection to the ongoingcontroversy about offensive cartoons about the Prophet Muhammad firstpublished in a Danish newspaper. Peace and blessings be upon the Prophet.Love of the Prophet must not result in a few people once againdestroying their
future by killing and burning churches. These people bytheir actions need to seek God's and their victims' forgiveness, offerthem compensation and reaffirm their faith if they truly want to atonefor their misdeeds. Love of the Prophet must always reflect how merciful and forgiving hewas. While we condemn these cartoons, we applaud peaceful protests thatMuslims have engaged in well before the media caught on to the story. However, we must dissociate ourselves from those who burn churches andattack innocent people who have nothing to do with causing the offense. The second sad news of the week was more evidence of the double standardapplied in dealing with Islamophobia and anti-Semitism. A court in Vienna,Austria handed down a three-year jail term for
David Irving, a Britishhistorian who denies that the Holocaust ever happened. Irving admitted tothe criminal charge of denying that the Nazis sent millions of Jews tothe gas chambers.Irving was arrested in Austria last November, when he was scheduled togive a lecture to students. He was taken into custody based on a warrantissued in 1989 under Austrian laws that make Holocaust denial a crime.Irving had given speeches in Vienna and another Austrian town, Leoben, that year. While it is fitting that Irving was punished for this crime,it is surprising that the same countries that punish those who commitanti-Semitism cannot understand why Muslims are offended by the Danishcartoons. The fact that it becomes an issue of
a"free speech" when Muslimsare involved, and an odious offense when other religious groups areconcerned smacks clearly of Islamophobia. As the cartoon controversycontinues, many Muslims around the world have wisely used thisopportunity to educate others about the Prophet Muhammad, peace andblessings be upon him.But it is not only non-Muslims who can learn about the Prophet of Islam.Muslims themselves must learn how the Prophet dealt with those who didn'tjust insult him, as those who drew and published these cartoons did, buttried to murder him, harm his family, torture his followers and destroyIslam. This week at SoundVision.com, we invite all, Muslims and non-Muslims,
tolearn more about the Prophet. In particular, please read our articleabout how he dealt with his enemies before and after Islam becamevictorious. It is eye-opening reading, especially for those who wererightly hurt and offended, but reacted the wrong way to the offense. Please also see our page on the Prophet and read more about his life andcontributions to humanity.PeaceAbdul Malik Mujahid http://www.soundvision.com

[IslamCity] Coalition of Churches: Bush is raining down terror on the world!

2006-02-23 Thread Nashid Abdul-Khaaliq

US Church Alliance Denounces Iraq War By Brian Murphy The Associated Press Saturday 18 February 2006 Porto Alegre, Brazil - A coalition of American churches sharply denounced the US-led war in Iraq on Saturday, accusing Washington of "raining down terror" and apologizing to other nations for "the violence, degradation and poverty our nation has sown." The statement, issued at the largest gathering of Christian churches in nearly a decade, also warned the United States was pushing the world toward environmental catastrophe with a "culture of consumption" and its refusal to back international accords seeking to battle global warming. "We lament with special anguish the war in Iraq, launched in deception and
violating global norms of justice and human rights," said the statement from representatives of the 34 US members of World Council of Churches. "We mourn all who have died or been injured in this war. We acknowledge with shame abuses carried out in our name." The World Council of Churches includes more than 350 mainstream Protestant, Anglican and Orthodox churches; the Roman Catholic Church is not a member. The US groups in the WCC include the Episcopal Church, the Presbyterian Church (USA), the United Methodist Church, several Orthodox churches and Baptist denominations, among others. The statement is part of widening religious pressure on the Bush administration, which still counts on the support of evangelical churches and other conservative denominations but is widely unpopular with liberal-minded Protestant congregations. The Very Rev. Leonid
Kishkovsky, the moderator for the US group of WCC members, said the letter was backed by the leaders of the churches but was not cleared by lower-level bodies. He predicted friction within congregations about the tone of the message. "There is much internal anguish and there is division," said Kishkovsky, ecumenical officer of the Orthodox Church of America. "I believe church leaders and communities are wrestling with the moral questions that this letter is addressing." On Friday, the US National Council of Churches - which includes many WCC members - released a letter appealing to Washington to close the Guantanamo Bay detention facility and saying reports of alleged torture violated "the fundamental Christian belief in the dignity of the human person." The two-page statement from the WCC group came at the midpoint of a 10-day meeting of more than
4,000 religious leaders, scholars and activists discussing trends and goals for major Christian denominations for the coming decades. The WCC's last global assembly was in 1998 in Zimbabwe - just four months after al-Qaida staged twin bombings at US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania. "Our country responded (to the September 11, 2001 attacks) by seeking to reclaim a privileged and secure place in the world, raining down terror on the truly vulnerable among our global neighbors ... entering into imperial projects that seek to dominate and control for the sake of national interests," said the statement. "Nations have been demonized and God has been enlisted in national agendas that are nothing short of idolatrous." The Rev. Sharon Watkins, president of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), worried that some may interpret the statement as undermining US troops in Iraq.
"We honor their courage and sense of duty, but ... we, as people of faith, have to say to our brothers and sisters, 'We are so profoundly sorry,'" Watkins said. The message also accused US officials of ignoring warnings about climate change and treating the world's "finite resources as if they are private possessions." It went on to criticize US domestic policies for refusing to confront racism and poverty. "Hurricane Katrina revealed to the world those left behind in our own nation by the rupture of our social contract," said the statement. The churches said they had "grown heavy with guilt" for not doing enough to speak out against the Iraq war and other issues. The statement asked forgiveness for a world that's "grown weary from the violence, degradation and poverty our nation has sown."

[IslamCity] President Carter re-stores faith in America

2006-02-23 Thread MIKEGHOUSE

Dear Friends,
President Jimmy Carter was on CNN today... he
probably will be repeated. He is one honest guy in America! I felt, he expressed
the sentiments of how Muslims feel about issues like Hamas, Palestine, Iran,
Israel, Bush, Ports issue etc. Wolfe Blitzer interviewed him. Carter
politely cut thru the sensationalism Blitzer was trying to go with. It
gives so much energy and faith in American system when you hear President
Carter.

Don't Punish the Palestinians

By Jimmy CarterMonday, February 20, 2006; Page A21

As the results of the recent Palestinian elections are implemented, it's
important to understand how the transition process works and also how important
to it are actions by Israel and the United States.
Although Hamas won 74 of the 132 parliamentary seats, Palestinian President
Mahmoud Abbas retains the right to propose and veto legislation, with 88 votes
required to override his veto. With nine of its elected members remaining in
prison, Hamas has only 65 votes, plus whatever third-party support it can
attract. Abbas also has the power to select and remove the prime minister, to
issue decrees with the force of law when parliament is not in session, and to
declare a state of emergency. As commander in chief, he also retains ultimate
influence over the National Security Force and Palestinian intelligence.

After the first session of the new legislature, which was Saturday, the
members will elect a speaker, two deputies and a secretary. These legislative
officials are not permitted to hold any position in the executive branch, so top
Hamas leaders may choose to concentrate their influence in the parliament and
propose moderates or technocrats for prime minister and cabinet posts. Three
weeks are allotted for the prime minister to form the cabinet, and a majority
vote of the parliament is required for final approval.
The role of the prime minister was greatly strengthened while Abbas and Ahmed
Qureia served in that position under Yasser Arafat, and Abbas has announced that
he will not choose a prime minister who does not recognize Israel or adhere to
the basic principles of the "road map." This could result in a stalemated
process, but my conversations with representatives of both sides indicate that
they wish to avoid such an imbroglio. The spokesman for Hamas claimed, "We want
a peaceful unity government." If this is a truthful statement, it needs to be
given a chance.
During this time of fluidity in the formation of the new government, it is
important that Israel and the United States play positive roles. Any tacit or
formal collusion between the two powers to disrupt the process by punishing the
Palestinian people could be counterproductive and have devastating
consequences.
Unfortunately, these steps are already underway and are well known throughout
the Palestinian territories and the world. Israel moved yesterday to withhold
funds (about $50 million per month) that the Palestinians earn from customs and
tax revenue. Perhaps a greater aggravation by the Israelis is their decision to
hinder movement of elected Hamas Palestinian Legislative Council members through
any of more than a hundred Israeli checkpoints around and throughout the
Palestinian territories. This will present significant obstacles to a
government's functioning effectively. Abbas informed me after the election that
the Palestinian Authority was $900 million in debt and that he would be unable
to meet payrolls during February. Knowing that Hamas would inherit a bankrupt
government, U.S. officials have announced that all funding for the new
government will be withheld, including what is needed to pay salaries for
schoolteachers, nurses, social workers, police and maintenance personnel. So far
they have not agreed to bypass the Hamas-led government and let humanitarian
funds be channeled to Palestinians through United Nations agencies responsible
for refugees, health and other human services.
This common commitment to eviscerate the government of elected Hamas
officials by punishing private citizens may accomplish this narrow purpose, but
the likely results will be to alienate the already oppressed and innocent
Palestinians, to incite violence, and to increase the domestic influence and
international esteem of Hamas. It will certainly not be an inducement to Hamas
or other militants to moderate their policies.
The election of Hamas candidates cannot adversely affect genuine peace talks,
since such talks have been nonexistent for over five years. A negotiated
agreement is the only path to a permanent two-state solution, providing peace
for Israel and justice for the Palestinians. In fact, if Israel is willing to
include the Palestinians in the process, Abbas can still play this unique
negotiating role as the unchallenged leader of the PLO (not the government that
includes Hamas).
It was under this umbrella and

Mottaki, the Foreign Minister, told reporters in Brussels on Monday:
"Nobody can remove a country from the map. This is a misunderstanding in
Europe of what our president mentioned."Speaking
in English, after addressing the European Parliament, Mottaki said that comments
from Ahmadinejad made in Octoberreferred to the current Israeli regime
which Tehran does not "recognise legally".Ahmadinejad caused a storm of
condemnation after Iran's
official IRNA news agency quoted him as telling a conference:
"Israel must be wiped off the
map".Mottaki's comments came as he sought to assure the EU that
Tehran had no ambitions to make nuclear weapons,
despite widespread mistrust in Europe and the US of the reasons behind Iran's nuclear
programme.No mythIran
says it is for energy production only. Mottaki also acknowledged the
Holocaust, in which six million Jews were killed by Nazi Germany, despite
Ahmadinejad saying in December that it was a myth.

  "We believe that those
people who make efforts to free their countries should not be regarded as
  terrorists" Manouchehr Mottaki,Iranian Foreign
  MinisterHe told the
parliament's foreign affairs committee, speaking through an interpreter: "Our
friends in Europe stress that such a crime has
taken place and they have stated certain figures that were actually suffered. We
have no argument about that, but what we are saying here is to put right such a
horrific event, why should the Muslims pay a price?"The political leader
of the resistancegroup Hamas, which won Palestinian legislative elections
last month, was in Tehran on Monday for talks
with Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali
Khamenei.Mottaki said it was natural such talks should take place, while
making clear he rejected the West's labelling of Hamas, which is committed to
Israel's destruction, as a terrorist group."We believe that those people
who make efforts to free their countries should not be regarded as terrorists,"
he said.He declined to speculate on how ties between a Hamas-led
Palestinian government and Tehran would develop.

[IslamCity] What is the best thing in Islam?

2006-02-23 Thread Mohammed A

All people have the custom of greeting one another, and every group has its own distinctive greeting that distinguishes them from other people. The Arabs used to greet one another with the words “An’im sabaahan” or “An’imu sabaahan” [equivalent to “Good morning” – Translator], using words derived from “al-ni’mah”, which means good living after the morning. The idea was that because the morning is the first part of the day, if a person encounters something good in the morning, the rest of the day will be good too. When Islam came, Allaah prescribed that the manner of greeting among Muslims should be “As-salaamu a'laykum” [not salam or salams or whatever] and that this greeting should only be used among
Muslims and not for other nations. The meaning of salaam (literally, peace) is harmlessness, safety and protection from evil and from faults. The name al-Salaam is a Name of Allaah, may He be exalted, so the meaning of the greeting of salaam which is required among Muslims is, “May the blessing of His Name descend upon you.” The usage of the preposition a'la in a'laykum (upon you) indicates that the greeting is inclusive.Ibn al-Qayyim said in Badaa’i' al-Fawaa’id (144):“Allaah, the Sovereign, the Most Holy, the Peace, prescribed that the greeting among the people of Islam should be ‘as-salaamu ‘a'laykum’, which is better than all the greetings of other nations which include impossible ideas or lies, such as saying, ‘May you live for a thousand years,’ or things that are not accurate, such as ‘An’im sabaahan (Good morning),’ or actions that are not right, such as
prostrating in greeting. Thus the greeting of salaam is better than all of these, because it has the meaning of safety which is life, without which nothing else can be achieved. So this takes precedence over all other aims or objectives. A person has two main aims in life: to keep himself safe from evil, and to get something good. Keeping safe from evil takes precedence over getting something good…”The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) made spreading salaam a part of faith. Narrated from ‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Umar (ra) that a man asked the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him): “What is the best thing in Islam?” He said, “Feeding others and giving the greeting of salaam to those whom you know and those whom you do not know.” Al-Bukhaari Ibn Hajar said in al-Fath (1/56): “i.e., do not single out anybody out of arrogance or to
impress them, but do it to honour the symbols of Islam and to foster Islamic brotherhood.”Ibn Rajab said in al-Fath (1/43): “The hadeeth makes the connection between feeding others and spreading salaam because this combines good actions in both word and deed, which is perfect good treatment (ihsaan). Indeed, this is the best thing that you can do in Islam after the obligatory duties.”Al-Sanoosi said in Ikmaal al-Mu’allim (1/244): “What is meant by salaam is the greeting between people, which sows seeds of love and friendship in their hearts, as does giving food. There may be some weakness in the heart of one of them, which is dispelled when he is greeted, or there may be some hostility, which is turned to friendship by the greeting.”Al-Qaadi said in Ikmaal al-Mu’allim (1:276): “Here the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was urging the believers
to soften their hearts. The best Islamic attitude is to love one another and greet one another, and this is achieved by words and deeds. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) urged the Muslims to foster love between one another by exchanging gifts and food, and by spreading salaam, and he forbade the opposite, namely forsaking one another, turning away from one another, spying on one another, seeking out information about one another, stirring up trouble and being two faced.Love is one of the duties of Islam and one of the pillars of the Islamic system. One should give salaams to those whom one knows and those whom one does not know, out of sincerity towards Allaah; one should not try to impress other people by giving salaams only to those whom one knows and no-one else. This also entails an attitude of humility and spreading the symbols of this ummah through
the word of salaam.”Thus the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) explained that this salaam spreads love and brotherhood. Muslim narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “You will not enter Paradise until you believe, and you will not believe until you love one another. Shall I not tell you about something which, if you do it, you will love one another? Spread salaam amongst yourselves.”Al-Qaadi ‘Ayaad said in al-Ikmaal (1/304): “This is urging us to spread salaam, as mentioned above, among those whom we know and those whom we do not know. Salaam is the first level of righteousness and the first quality of brotherhood, and it is the key to

[IslamCity] THE REWARD OF THE MUNAFIQS

2006-02-23 Thread assalamu_alaikum_1427
Assalamu aleikum.

The radical secular modernists - the Carlsberg Muslims who aspire to
represent Islam while rejecting everything for which Islam works -
have caused much injury to Muslims throughout the world. Munafiq
regimes and their backers have acted closely on behalf of the western
secret police to oppress Muslims and block Islam. They stimulate
bigotry against Islam and Muslims everywhere. Their agenda is to
manufacture an image of two Islams; one being the big bad guys who
actually believe in this deen and take it seriously; the other being
their own kuffar, shaytanic, sick, homosexualized, alcoholic, qadiani
invention in which Muslims lose the right to jihad.

Periodically the western media provide some amusement regarding those
munafiq elements. Those munafiqs who call for investigation of real
Muslims often themselves become the targets of the repression that
they caused. In Australia at this very writing, munafiqs are calling
for screening out Muslims from immigration, which inevitably will
screen out many of the munafiq elements themselves.

And in the US ...

Frist Calls for Halt to U.S. Ports Deal
Senate Majority Leader Frist Calls for Halt to Deal Giving Arab Firm
Control of U.S. Ports
By WILL LESTER
The Associated Press
February 21, 2006
http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/print?id=1644865

WASHINGTON - Senate Republican Leader Bill Frist called Tuesday for
the Bush administration to stop a deal permitting a United Arab
Emirates company to take over six major U.S. seaports, upping the ante
on a fight that several congressmen, governors and mayors are waging
with the White House.

The decision to finalize this deal should be put on hold until the
administration conducts a more extensive review of this matter, said
Frist. If the administration cannot delay this process, I plan on
introducing legislation to ensure that the deal is placed on hold
until this decision gets a more thorough review.

In the uneasy climate after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the Bush
administration decision to allow the transaction is threatening to
develop a major political headache for the White House.

I'm not against foreign ownership, said Frist, but my main concern
is national security. He was speaking to reporters in Long Beach,
Calif., where Frist was doing a fact-finding tour on port security and
immigration issues.

Frist, R-Tenn., spoke as other lawmakers, including Rep. Peter King,
R-N.Y., and Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., said they would offer
emergency legislation next week to block the deal ahead of a planned
March 2 takeover.

Frist's move comes a day after two Republican governors, New York's
George Pataki and Maryland's Robert Ehrlich, voiced doubts about the
acquisition of a British company that has been running six U.S. ports
by Dubai Ports World, a state-owned business in the United Arab Emirates.

The British company, Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Co.,
runs major commercial operations at ports in Baltimore, Miami, New
Jersey, New Orleans, New York and Philadelphia.

Both governors indicated they may try to cancel lease arrangements at
ports in their states because of the DP World takeover.

Ensuring the security of New York's port operations is paramount and
I am very concerned with the purchase of Peninsular Oriental Steam
by Dubai Ports World, Pataki said in a statement. I have directed
the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to explore all legal
options that may be available to them.

Ehrlich, concerned about security at the Port of Baltimore, said
Monday he was very troubled that Maryland officials got no advance
notice before the Bush administration approved the Arab company's
takeover of the operations at the six ports.

We needed to know before this was a done deal, given the state of
where we are concerning security, Ehrlich told reporters in the State
House rotunda in Annapolis.

The arrangement brought protests from both political parties in
Congress and a lawsuit in Florida from a company affected by the takeover.

Public fears that the nation's ports are not properly protected,
combined with the news of an Arab country's takeover of six major
ports, proved a combustible mix.

Republican Sen. Lindsay Graham of South Carolina said on Fox News
Sunday that the administration approval was unbelievably tone deaf
politically. GOP Rep. Tom Davis of Virginia said on ABC's This
Week, It's a tough one to explain, but we're in a global economy.
... I think we need to take a very close look at it.

Democratic Sen. Robert Menendez of New Jersey said Monday that he and
Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., will introduce legislation
prohibiting the sale of port operations to foreign governments.

At least one Senate oversight hearing was planned for later this month.

Critics have noted that some of the 9/11 hijackers used the UAE as an
operational and financial base. In addition, they contend the UAE was
an important transfer point for shipments of smuggled nuclear

Vienna Citizens Campaign Against Nudity

"These obscene images make my blood boil
  every day," Unossan fumed
Ahmed Al-Matboli, IOL Correspondent
VIENNA, February 21, 2006 (IslamOnline.net) – Vienna
citizens have joined forces in calling for nude-free editions of the
mass-circulation and charge-free daily Heute, calling the inside photos
offensive and immoral.
"The anti-nudity campaign participants, regardless of their
religious affiliations, are seeking to ban the publication of these nude
images," campaign organizer Johannes Unossan told IslamOnline.net Monday,
February 20.
The daily is distributed in the Vienna underground with
images of women posing nude included on its pages to the irk of travelers of
different age groups.
"These obscene images make my blood boil every day," Unossan
fumed.
Heute is distributed in
coordination between the Vienna transport agency and a major press
institution.
More Harm

  Charge-free Heute is distributed
  daily in the Vienna underground.
Unossan said the paper's mass circulation made it incumbent
upon him to contact its managing board to stop the publication of the nude
images and replace them with valuable information for the travelers during their
commutes to work.
"I warned them that it would do more harm than good
especially if the publishers paid no heed to morals and ethics," he
added.
Unossan has also launched a Web site to garner the support
of Vienna citizens in his campaigning against nudity.
The online appeal drew until Sunday, February 19, nearly
1,200 supporters, mostly women.
"Every supporter has his/her own motives, but we are all
wedded to the same goal which is taking these images off the
paper."
"As far as I'm concerned, I didn't imagine my children
staring at these lustrous images and that is why I championed this campaign to
protect the people's religious and moral values."
Children also voted for the ban.
"I go red-faced when I spot these images," said 13-year-old
Hurbert on Unossan's Web site. "But I'm used to reading the interesting short
stories in the paper."
Muslim Support
The campaign has further drawn support from the Muslim
minority.
"The initiative was taken by a Christian and if Muslims had
objected they would have been called extremists and described as having
oppressive attitudes towards women," Iyad Ali, a Syrian student, told
IOL.
Ahmed Abdallah, a programmer, said that Muslims and
Christians should be united in fighting vice.
"Unossan deserves respect for his initiative and he gives a
good example for all Europeans," added Amgad Maree.
