[IslamCity] Do Not Be Sad

2006-03-12 Thread silent creature
   DO NOT BE SAD
  1. Know that if you do not live within the scope of today, your thoughts will
be scattered, your affairs will become confused, and your worrying will
increase. This is the meaning of the hadith: When you are in the morning, do
not expect to see the evening, and when you are in the evening, do not expect
to see the morning.

  2. Forget the past and all that it contained. Being absorbed in things that
are gone is sheer lunacy.

  3. Do not be preoccupied with the future. Because the future is in the world
of the unseen, do not let it bother you until it comes.

4. Do not be shaken by criticism; instead, be firm. Know that the level of
people's criticism increases in proportion to your worth.

5. Faith in Allah and good deeds are the means of the good and happy life.

6.Whoever desires peace, tranquility, and comfort shall find it all in the
remembrance of Allah.

7.One should know with certainty that everything is according to a divine
decree.

8.Do not expect gratitude from anybody.

9. Train yourself to be ready and be prepared for the worst eventuality.

10. Perhaps what has happened is in your best interest (though you may not
comprehend how that is so).

11.Everything that is decreed for the Muslim is best for him.

12.Enumerate the blessings (of Allah) and be thankful.

13. Whatever you have, are better than many others.

14. From one hour to the next comes relief.

15. In times of hardship, one turns to supplication and prayer.

16. Calamities should positively reshape your outlook and strengthen your
heart.

17. Indeed, with each difficulty there is relief.

18. Do not let the trifles cause of your destruction.

19.Indeed, your Lord is Oft-Forgiving.

20. Do not be angry... Do not be angry... Do not be angry.

21.Life is bread, water, and shade, so do not be perturbed by a lack of any
other material thing.

22. Remember the verse: And in the heaven is your provision, and that which
you are promised. (Qur'an 51:22)

23. Most evil that is supposed to happen never occurs.

24. Look at those who are afflicted and be thankful.

25.When Allah loves a people, He causes them to endure trials.

26. You should constantly repeat those supplications that the Prophet taught us
to say during times of hardship.

27. Work hard and seriously in that which is fruitful, and cast off idleness.

28.Abandon spreading rumors and receiving rumors. Upon hearing them do not
believe them.

29. Your malice and your striving to seek revenge is much more harmful to your
health than it is to your antagonist.

30.The hardship that befalls you is expiation for your sins.

[IslamCity] Palestine at the crossroads from al-ahram

2006-03-12 Thread S A Hannan

Dear Mr editor/ members of the list,

Assalamu Alaikum. Kindly see thearticle
Palestine at the crossroads. It says that it is Israel, not Hamas, that should
be pressured to moderate its position. The writerMr Hassan
Nafaa*The writer is a professor of
political science at Cairo University

Shah Abdul Hannan

Palestine at the crossroads
It is Israel, not Hamas, that should be pressured to
moderate its position, writes Hassan Nafaa*

The victory of Hamas in the recent legislative elections has pulled
the Palestinian cause down a new path. Some people say that the
Palestinian people could use some change, since the post-Oslo
negotiations proved mostly fruitless. Others say the victory is damaging
to the political process and gives Israel the chance to wriggle free
from its commitments and press ahead with its unilateral plans. Israel
has been hoping to carve off nearly one half of the West Bank through
its actions. If realised, its plan would keep major settlements and
security-sensitive areas under Israeli control. The rest of the West
Bank would be transformed into disconnected cantons. The Palestinians
would not be able to create a viable state.
Let's start looking objectively at Israel's current strategy. Israel
is apparently trying to use the Hamas victory for its own purposes. In
cooperation with the US, Israel has launched a ferocious campaign to
starve the Palestinians and isolate Hamas. Its aim is twofold. For one,
Israel wants Hamas to recognise it as a legitimate entity and accept all
the agreements reached with the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO)
and the Palestinian Authority -- chiefly the Oslo Accords.
Interestingly, Israel is not offering reciprocal concessions, even
minors ones, still less meeting the Palestinians halfway. What the
Israelis and Americans -- perhaps even some Arabs and Europeans -- want
is for Hamas to make substantial strategic concessions on the form and
content of any future solution, even before negotiations are resumed.

Israel is evidently willing to negotiate with anyone who doesn't mind
its building of settlements. In a sense, the Israelis are using
negotiations to manage, rather than resolve, the conflict. Needless to
say, Israel is making impossible conditions, ones that are tantamount to
political suicide for Hamas. The Palestinians did not vote for Hamas
until it became clear that Israel is not serious about negotiations.
Israel besieged and liquidated Yasser Arafat, the man who espoused the
peace process. Oslo, meanwhile, failed to provide the minimum of
Palestinian national rights; namely a sovereign state on pre-1967 land
and the return of the refugees.
The Palestinians have not offered Hamas a blank check. They gave it a
mandate to press on with resistance. They gave it a pledge to endure the
sacrifices involved. Hamas knows that. It knows that submission to
Israeli demands would undermine its popularity, let alone smash the
hopes of an entire nation.
Israel's second aim is to have Hamas blamed for future Palestinian
suffering, for the collapse of the peace process, as well as for
impending starvation and violence. Should Israel succeed in blaming
Hamas, it would be in a better position to implement its current policy.
In particular, it would be able to keep building the gigantic separation
wall, annex large settlements, and create a situation where main roads
and chunks of the West Bank remain under exclusive military control.
Israel is hoping to create a new status quo. But first it has to
undermine Hamas, both as a movement and legend.
I expect Israel to press ahead with its unilateral agenda. This
agenda includes Israel's own interpretation of "safe borders". I believe
that the Israeli ruling elite, and not just the extremists, agree -- in
light of what happened in the second Camp David talks in 2000 -- that
what moderate Israelis are willing to offer stops way short of what
moderate Palestinians are willing to accept. Israel is still fearful of
the so- called Arab demographic bomb. That's why its elite is preparing
for unilateral separation. That's why the elite has accepted Sharon's
plans. And that's why Peres agreed to go into coalition with Sharon's
allies. Israel was determined on this even before the Palestinian
elections were held.
The Hamas victory is not what worries Israel. Israel has become adept
at turning unexpected developments to its

God: I've lost
faith in Blair

All the signs are that the Almighty is unhappy
about efforts to implicate Him in the attack on Iraq

Terry
Jones
Wednesday March 8, 2006
The Guardian

A high-level leak has revealed that
God is furious at Tony Blair's attempts to implicate him in the
bombing of Iraq.
Sources close to the archangel Gabriel report him as describing the Almighty as
hopping mad ... with sanctimonious yet unscrupulous politicians claiming
He would condone their bestial activities when He has no way of going public
Himself, owing to the MMW agreement (a reference to the long-established
Moving in Mysterious Ways concordat).

Mr Blair went public about God on Michael Parkinson's
TV show. If you have faith about these things, he said, then
you realise that judgment is made by other people. If you believe in God, it's
made by God as well. As is customary with Mr Blair's statements, it's
rather hard to tease out what he is actually saying; but the gist is clearly
that if God didn't actually tell him to bomb Iraq, then the Almighty would
certainly agree it was the right thing to do.

If Tony Blair thinks his friendship
with George W Bush is worth rubbing out a couple of hundred thousand Iraqi men,
women and children, then that's something he can talk over with me later,
said God. But when he starts publicly claiming that's the way I do the
arithmetic too, it's time I put my foot down! It is well known that God
has a very big foot.

A source says Gabriel has spent days
trying to dissuade the Almighty from loosing a plague of toads upon the Blair family.
Gabriel reminded God that Cherie and the children had nothing to do with Tony's
decisions. God's response, it is reliably reported, was: Blair says the
Iraqis are lucky to have got bombed, so how can he complain if his family gets
a few toads in the bath?

The archangel is said to be ticked off
with God's ability to provide glib answers without even thinking.

What has particularly incensed the
Almighty is that Mr Blair made the claim on the Parkinson show. If he'd
done it on Richard and Judy I could have forgiven a lot, He is reported
to have said.

The archangel reported that the Almighty
has become increasingly irritated with the vogue for politicians to claim that
He is behind their policies - especially if these involve killing large numbers
of humans. According to Gabriel, God spake these words: That George W
Bush once had the nerve to say: 'God told me to go end the tyranny in Iraq, and I
did.' Well, let me tell you I did no such thing! If I'd wanted to get rid of
Saddam Hussein, I could have given him pneumonia. I didn't need the president
of the United States to send
in hundreds of heavy bombers and thousands of missiles to destroy Iraq - even
though I appreciate that Halliburton needed to fill its order books.

How do Bush and Blair think it
makes me look to all those parents who have lost sons and daughters in this
grubby business? Don't they know that the Muslims they're taking out worship
the same Me that they do? It's a public relations disaster that ought to set
Christianity back hundreds of years. Though knowing the fundamentalists, it'll
probably have the reverse effect.

The archangel further revealed that he
had been advised by no less a person than Alastair Campbell to warn God to keep
out of politics. But it's hard to get God to do anything He doesn't want
to, sighed the archangel. It's all to do with what He calls 'free
will', though a lot of us have a problem working that one out, since He's
omnipotent and omniscient.

God, the archangel says, is also
disturbed by Mr Blair's remark that while religious beliefs might colour his
politics, it's best not to take it too far.

How would he like it if I went
round claiming that he gave me his full backing when I sent the tsunami last
year?

[IslamCity] Egypt tortures for the US, so why not on its own account?

2006-03-12 Thread Showkat Ali

Egypt tortures for the US, so why not on its own account? Human rights cannot be regional or selective: Guantánamo, Belmarsh, Laz Oghli and Facility 1391 stand or fall together http://www.guardian.co.uk/egypt/story/0,,1726812,00.htmlAhdaf Soueif Thursday March 9, 2006The Guardian The story of Maajid Nawaz, Ian Nisbet and Reza Pankhurst, the three British Muslims who travelled to Egypt with their families, their detention there, their trial and their release now, almost four years later, encapsulates several elements in the "east-west" or "war on terror" story. Media coverage in the UK has focused on the men's Britishness and whether the British government did enough to help them. As usual, events outside the western hemisphere are presented as though in a void. So here's a pencilling in of the local background.Twenty-six young men were
arrested in Cairo and Alexandria on April 1 2002, accused of membership of a banned group. This was not an extraordinary event. Over the past three decades, such arrests, detentions and kidnappings have become fairly common. People disappear. Friends hunt for them. Usually they are in the State Security Investigation Bureau in Laz Oghli Square in Cairo. They are generally held long enough to extract a confession. Their treatment ranges from insults, threats and beatings to fairly evolved methods of torture. Sometimes the person is not required to confess to anything; they are given a warning and let go.Sometimes the person dies. Mostly, they are sent to jail to await trial. Once in jail, they are generally not ill-treated, but conditions are basic. There are about 15,000 political detainees in Egyptian jails. Some have been found innocent years ago. Some have never been brought to trial. Some have been there more than a decade. The young men arrested in April 2002 were accused
of membership of the banned and avowedly non-violent Islamist group, Egyptian Hizb ut-Tahrir. Among them were the three Britons. They were members of British Hizb ut-Tahrir - a group that is not (yet) illegal. The defence team for the men consisted of 15 Egyptian lawyers from across the political spectrum; from Muntassir el-Zayyat, eminent legal counsel of the Muslim Brotherhood, to Ahmad Sayf, popular leftwing head of the Legal Aid Centre, who served pro bono along with two lawyers from the Civil Liberties Committee of the bar association. The case was tried in the state security emergency court, part of the apparatus supporting the emergency laws. These laws were first introduced to Egypt by the British occupying power during the first world war. They were reinstated, again by the British, for the second world war - and successive governments have used them as an instrument of oppression ever since. The state security emergency courts allow no further legal recourse
 - their decisions are not open to appeal, except directly to the president. Some are seen as vulnerable to political pressure. The dismantling of the emergency laws is a central demand of the opposition movements, which made their presence felt in the streets and in elections last year. The evidence seized from the men's homes took a year to examine. It was mainly books and articles, many published by the prestigious al-Ahram Centre for Political and Strategic Studies, by mainstream publishers and by human rights organisations. Submitted to the court were some 200 reports from the Higher Council for Islamic Affairs, the state adjudicator on religious matters on the religious content of the material - all declaring it innocent.Sayf (who has himself spent time in jail) is convinced that none of the young men did more than discuss and publicise theoretical ideas about alternative forms of government. I attended a summing-up session at court, in June 2003. Here are the
impressions I noted down that night: "Reza Pankhurst's Iranian mother and English father are here. There's a lot of sympathy for them as foreigners and parents - their lad caught up in this mess ... What struck me was the difference between the accused and the rest of us: the security, the relatives, even the lawyers looked worn, dusty and frayed. Inside the cage, the young men were collected and dignified ... Mrs Pankhurst said to me: 'I get my strength from him, from Reza' ... The judge, Ahmad Izzat al-Ashmawi, has clearly lost patience with the prosecution. He declared that he will deliver his verdict on December 25. Everyone believes he will throw the case out."On December 22, Egypt's foreign minister, Ahmad Maher, paid a highly unpopular visit to Jerusalem. On a visit to the al-Aqsa mosque, shoes and slippers were thrown at him and some of his attackers managed to slap him. The Egyptian media blamed the Palestinian Hizb ut-Tahrir. In Cairo, Judge Ashmawi postponed
declaring the verdict for three months. On March 25 2004, he declared the men guilty and handed down sentences ranging from one to five years.Egypt is an important regional power. It is critical to US and

day a man asked hazrat Ali (a.s.): Is there a God?

Hazrat
Ali (a.s.): Of course there is.

Man:
How do I know?

Hazrat
Ali (a.s.) pointed towards the footprints of a camel on the sand and asked the
man, What do these footprints tell you?

Man:
That a camel has gone past from here.

Imam:
But did you see the camel passing by?

Man:
No, but the footprints are good enough to indicate the passing of the camel
from here.

Imam:
So when you see the sun, moon, stars, trees, animals, etc. doesnt your
mind tell you that since all these things are there, there must be someone who
has created them all? And that is your Creator, Allah.

This educational book is available for children in grades 4, 5 and 6in some school libraries in Southern Ontario. The book is also a good reading for adults."This simple and telling book allows children everywhere to see those caught in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as children just like themselves, but who are living
far more difficult, dangerous lives. The book does not take sides, but it does present an unblinking portrait of how victimized these children are by the endless struggle that the adults around them seem unable or unwilling to resolve." As acharitable organization, The Canadian Palestinian Centre (CPC) is undertaking an initiative, in conjunction with the Canaanite Canadian Knowledge Centre (CCKC), an educational organization, to purchase and distribute 308 copies of this bookto our Members of Parliament. We are looking for your support to help us raise enough funds to cover the cost of purchasing the 308
copies. We estimate that each copy will cost around $15.00 including GST and delivery from the publisher in Toronto.Postage to MPs is free. We will also negotiate with the publisher to see if volume purchasing could bring down the cost of each copy. If we raise sufficient funds to purchaseadditional copies, we will be pleased to explore the possibility of distributing copies to educational institutions.Reading thestories and wishes of Palestinian and Israeli children will make you see (through the eyes of Palestinian and Israeli children) some of what is going on in that troubled land. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict will be closer to a resolution when more people listen to the children and attempt to understand their wishes. Please contribute generouslyto thisimportant initiative. The Canadian Palestinian Centre will issue a tax receipt for the full amount of your contribution. Contributions
maybe mailed to the CPC at the above address.Should you have any questions, please feel to contact me (CPC)at (613) 723-6729or Monzer Zimmo (CCKC)at (613) 792-3941.We look forward to hearing from you soon. With thanks and regards,Nabil AyyadThree WishesPalestinian and Israeli Children SpeakDeborah
Ellis This book is about the children of the war-torn Middle East. Deborah Ellis, author of the enormously popular Breadwinner trilogy, turns her attention from the children of Afghanistan to the children of Israel and Palestine, presenting their stories based on interviews done in the winter of 2002 while in Israel and Palestine. In a rehabilitation center for disabled children, twelve-year-old Nora says she loves the color pink and chewing gum and explains that the wheels of her wheelchair are like her legs. Eleven-year-old Mohammad describes how his house was demolished by soldiers.
And we meet twelve-year-old Salam, whose older sister walked into a store in Jerusalem and blew herself up, killing herself and two people, and injuring twenty others. All these children live both ordinary and extraordinary lives. They argue with their siblings. They hate spinach. They dream about their wishes for the future. They have also seen their homes destroyed, their families killed, and they live in the midst of constant upheaval and violence. This simple and telling book allows children everywhere to see those caught in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as children just like themselves, but who are living far more difficult, dangerous lives. The book does not take sides, but it does present an unblinking portrait of how victimized these children are by the endless struggle that the adults around them seem unable or unwilling to resolve. The text includes brief background information,
black-and-white photographs taken by the author, a map, a glossary and suggestions for further reading."Conventional knowledge is death to our souls... Live where you fear to live, destroy your reputation, be notorious."

[IslamCity] Iraq War: Profits Turn to 'Prophets'

2006-03-12 Thread KarimAG

Iraq War: Profits Turn to Prophets

The fundamental principle of a secular society is to
keep religion out of politics; a cardinal sin according to the
secular clerics. Surprisingly, like Bush, Blair has now come out of the closet
and claimed that God inspired him to go to war, and he will be judged by the
Almighty on that issue.

Therefore, the
unprovoked aggression against Iraq,
the consequential murder of thousands of innocent civilians and destruction of
the entire country was sanctioned by the divine and this is supposed to
be an example of Gods guidance for the rest of humanity. Also, as Blair
professes to be a Christian, the Iraq war is also supposed to be in
compliance with the fundamental Christian notion of: turning the other cheek!
If that is so, then I am sure even the most fanatical atheists will be saying:
Halleluiah, it is a miracle! Blair and Bush do sound like a pair of medieval
crusaders; Pope Bush standing with his Cardinal Bishop Blair.

The obvious
implication of claiming divine intervention is that we should not hold Mr Blair
accountable; he is merely a soldier of God - how convenient, in fact he is a
real Bliar! Also note, since neither Blair nor Bush is a follower of Islam they
are not qualified to earn the title of religious fanatics or extremists or
similar terms; even though they hear voices of God telling them attack
countries with invisible WMDs but visible oil.

This admission of
Blair is really amusing. Why did he not say this from the onset when he was sending
his troops? Surely, it would have boosted the moral of the troops to hear that
they are going on a real crusade, led by Pope Bush and his Cardinal Bishop,
Tony Blair. If Blair was convinced that Iraq war was a divine mission from
God, he should have encouraged his children and other eligible family members
to participate and not deprive them of the potential reward from God Almighty
in participating killing the infidels and heathens.

Indeed, God
Almighty will judge Blair and everyone in the hereafter. But there is also
judgement in this present life, on planet earth. If religions only advocated
judgement in the hereafter, then earth would be a paradise for criminals. Like
a criminal, fundamentalist Blair is asking everyone to overlook his actions for
now and wait for the divine verdict in the next life. It is a pity for Blair and Bush that the
medieval Catholic doctrine of cleansing ones sins, and reserving a place in
heaven with payments made in gold has been abolished. They would have been so much
at ease knowing that they could pay off all their sins on earth.

Blair is the leader of
a democratic state, where the government is accountable to the masses that
elected him into office. Convenient then that Blair makes such revelations at
the end of his term and not during an election campaign. He was not elected for
his alleged communication with God Almighty and had he made such a revelation
prior to the election, he would have been dismissed as a religious nutcase.

Now, both Blair and
Bush have claimed to have a hotline to God, they are the new self-appointed
prophets of God. Did God Almighty communicate to them about the
urgency to find WMDs, as they could face danger within 45 minutes? Did God get
so desperate for war, He asked Tony to plagiarise and produce a dodgy dossier
to convince everyone else? If God inspired Tony and Bush to war, then Abu-Ghraib
rapes, torture, executions, Camp-X-Ray incarceration, Fallujah massacre using
phosphorus bombs, and the killing of the 100,000 plus civilians, must have been
part of Gods overall plan, a from of neo-inquisition perhaps. The
orphans and the widows in Iraq
would see the God of Bush and Tony as the one with two horns! Anyway what
happened to that hotline when no WMDs were found in Iraq? Yes, we know the spin - the
devils disciples must have stolen the WMDs out of Iraq into Iran
and Syria,
yeah right!!!

For decades, the
Secular West have been scorning Muslims, for simply referring to Islam in any
shape or form, using pejorative terms like fanatics, fundamentalists,
extremists, militants etc. Even the most apolitical spiritual Muslim is
described in such terms for simply being devout in his or personal capacity,
which ironically conforms to the secular interpretation of religion. Yet, now
their leaders confess to hearing voices which they are translating as divine
communication. For sure you cannot find religious nuts like this in Hamas or
Al-Qaeda, none from such organisation have made such fanatical claims.

Just observe how
many, or few, secular journalists have the courage, the intelligence and the
integrity, to point out the hypocrisy and stupidity of a secular leader
claiming to be driven by religion. Surely, they owe an apology to the Muslims
for all the slander and scorning while they missed the real religious fanatics
sitting at their doorsteps. But that would require those journalists to possess
courage, humbleness,

[IslamCity] OPIN: The Role of Usury (Riba) in Contemporary society

2006-03-12 Thread Abdul Alim

The Prohibition on Usury (Riba) The usury verse is not the only verse in the Quran on business. Much more prominent in the Quran is the command to engage in honest business. Two Quranic verses which explicitly rule out usury are: “O ye who believe! Fear Allah, and give up what remains of your demand for usury, if ye are indeed believers” (Quran 2: 278).However, other than making a distinction between trade and usury, such that the former is allowed and encouraged, while the latter is expressly frowned upon, the Quran does not exactly define what constitutes riba. “Those who devour usury will not stand except as stand one whom the
Evil one by his touch Hath driven to madness. That is because they say: Trade is like usury, but Allah hath permitted trade and forbidden usury. Those who after receiving direction from their Lord, desist, shall be pardoned for the past, their case is for Allah (to judge); but those who repeat (The offence) are companions of the Fire: They will abide therein (for ever)” (Quran 2:275).Thus scholars have turned to the Sunnah for elaboration. The majority of the scholars claim that there is an absolute prohibition against transaction involving interest. During the Makkan period, it is noted as a strong recommendation against taking interest. During the Madinah period, however, it is articulated as an outright prohibition. But, there are varying degrees of difference among the legal schools as to how this prohibition is put into practice. There is a tendency to conflate all types of interest as being equally forbidden without delving into the
details.Semantically, riba means excess or an addition. It refers to an excess stipulated in a contract or an exchange. There are two juristic categories of riba: riba al fadl and riba al nasiah. Riba al fadl refers to an excess in weight/measure, while riba al nasi’ah refers to an excess arising from the benefits of delay. Some Hambali scholars, including Ibn Qayyim al Jawziyya, have added a third category, called riba al jahiliyya, referring to the riba practised in the pre-Islamic period. According to this period, the lender increases the interest on debt if borrower has not paid it by the maturity date of the loan. In effect, the rate of increase is so great that it pushes the borrower deeper and deeper into debt, and unable to ever pay it off. This kind of exploitative practice is what the Quran refers to in its discussion of riba. The other two types of riba have been developed later by jurists by examining the
Sunnah. However, most Islamic scholars over the years have interpreted the prohibition on usury to mean all forms of interest, which essentially means that debt financing is illegal in Islam, at least according to that interpretation. This has led to the creation of so-called “Islamic banking”, a banking system that allegedly does not rely on debt financing, but only equity financing. The reality is that “Islamic banking” essentially re-packages interest under a different name such as “mark-up rate” or “profit rate”, and re-prices goods to include the full interest cost within the loan. For example, if a person bought a new $15,000 car with a conventional 8% loan, he would pay interest and principle until the debt is cleared. An Islamic bank on the other hand would simply calculate the total dollars he would pay back over the loan term with interest, and then charge him that amount for the car to be paid over the same loan term while claiming that there was no interest being
levied. It is simply a semantic game being played. There are few exceptions in which the Islamic banks do engage in equity financing, but then they are unable to finance consumption purposes. We argue that the Quran does not mandate equity over debt financing, and allows transactions that are mutually beneficial. The usury verse is not the only verse in the Quran on business. Much more prominent in the Quran is the command to engage in honest business, in particular to give “full measure”. Specifically, the Quran says, “Woe to those that deal in fraud; those who, when they have to receive by measure from men, exact full measure- but when they have to give by measure or weight to men, give less than due” (Quran 83:1-3). This command requires that both parties to any business transaction pay the full and fair values of what they are purchasing. Failure to do so is a profound violation of Quranic commercial principles. Debt financing, when done in accord with
this principle is permissible. When the lender gets more than he is entitled to, he commits the sin of usury. When he gets less, he is engaging in charity. But charity is a voluntary act, and not one required in business transactions. What is the “full measure” in debt financing? It is the value that the borrower gains from the use of the funds and the lender foregoes by giving up control of those funds for the period of the loan. There are three components of the value of the funds. The first

[IslamCity] Merits of Offering Five Daily Prayers

2006-03-12 Thread Shahid Khan

Merits of Offering Five Daily Prayers

Let me start by saying that there are many passages in the Qur an, which directly order us to obey Allah and His messenger. When we take Islam as our way of life, we are voluntarily surrendering to the commands of Allah and we are choosing to follow the practice (sunnah) of the prophet (peace be upon him).

In Surah Al-Isra verse 78, we are told:
Perform As-Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat) from mid-day till the darkeness of the night (i.e. the Zuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha prayers), and recite the Qur an in the early dawn. Verily, the recitation of dawn Qur an (
i.e.. the morning - Fajr prayer) is ever witnessed.
Then, from the time the sun declines, which is mid-day, until the darkening of the night, includes Zuhr (noon prayer), Asr (evening prayer), Maghrib (sunset prayer) and Isha (night prayer). These five prayers were revealed to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) on the Isra a and Mi`raj, and were performed by him in their specified number of rak aas. He also taught them to Muslims, who performed them in that sequence and form ever since.

There is no secret in the number of prayers. It is simply that they are related to the course of the day and relevant to the different states of nature (day and night) that are linked to the biological clock of any Muslim. Thus, the Muslim is in continuous connection with God, through out the different phases of the day. The day starts with Fajr (dawn) prayers, to renew the oath of worship and obedience. Then, the workday of a Muslim society should start after that. Zuhr is in the middle of the day, and Asr is a bit later. As for Maghrib, it is with sunset and Isha is when the night falls.

The prayer times are also related to the manners and times of rest in the social life. There are verses in the Qur an, which say that before Fajr, after Zuhr and after Isha, the Muslim parents are allowed a time of privacy and that other family members should respect that. Also, as a Muslim is encouraged to perform prayers with a group of Muslims (jama a), these are also times of social gathering in mosques. Such gatherings, is where people can simply meet and discuss their communal affairs and grass root lobbying, for societal causes. The number of prayers is simply appropriate for such social structures, relations, neighborhood and community ties. It is also suitable for the special structure of worship, which connects the Muslim to his Creator throughout the long day.

In a modern economy, where family members are located in different areas and where the workplace introduces new forms of communication and personal relations, the times of prayers re-formulate these relations. They remind people of their relation to Allah and to each other as well.

Hence, the competitive capitalist atmosphere of modern businesses is rendered milder. The embedded values of submission to Allah and remembering the hereafter and socio-religious bond of Islam, keep the balance of a human self in tact. One should read in our current global economy how the daily routine can result in corrosions of character. Herein, the wisdom and philosophy of the five daily prayers in Islam, gain new meanings and implications.

[IslamCity] The Emperor and The Seed

2006-03-12 Thread KarimAG

The Emperor and The Seed
By Author Unknown

An emperor in the Far East was growing old and knew it was time to choose
his successor. Instead of choosing one of his assistants or his children, he
decided something different. He called young people in the kingdom together one
day. He said, It is time for me to step down and choose the next emperor.
I have decided to choose one of you.

The kids were shocked!
But the emperor continued. I am going to give each one of you a seed
today. One very special seed. I want you to plant the seed, water it and come
back here after one year from today with what you have grown from this one
seed. I will then judge the
plants that you bring,
and the one I choose will be the next emperor!

One boy named Ling was
there that day and he, like the others, received a seed. He went home and
excitedly told his mother the story. She helped him get a pot and planting
soil, and he planted the seed and watered it carefully. Every day he would
water it and watch to see if it had grown. After about three weeks, some of the
other youths began to talk about their seeds and the plants that were beginning
to grow.

Ling kept checking his
seed, but nothing ever grew. 3 weeks, 4 weeks, 5 weeks went by. Still nothing.
By now, others were talking about their plants but Ling didn't have a plant,
and he felt like a failure. Six months went by, still nothing in Ling's pot. He
just knew he had killed his seed.

Everyone else had
trees and tall plants, but he had nothing. Ling didn't say anything to his
friends, however. He just kept waiting for his seed to grow.

A year finally went by
and all the youths of the kingdom brought their plants to the emperor for
inspection. Ling told his mother that he wasn't going to take an empty pot. But
honest about what happened, Ling felt sick to his stomach, but he knew his
mother was right. He took his empty pot to the palace. When Ling arrived, he
was amazed at the variety of plants grown by the other youths. They were
beautiful in all shapes and sizes. Ling put his empty pot on the floor and many
of the other kinds laughed at him. A few felt sorry for him and just said,
Hey nice try.

When the emperor
arrived, he surveyed the room and greeted the young people. Ling just tried to
hide in the back. What great plants, trees and flowers you have
grown, said the emperor. Today, one of you will be appointed the
next emperor! All of a sudden, the emperor spotted Ling at the back of
the room with his empty pot. He ordered his guards to bring him to the front.
Ling was terrified. The emperor knows I'm a failure! Maybe he will have
me killed!

When Ling got to the
front, the Emperor asked his name. My name is Ling, he replied. All
the kids were laughing and making fun of him. The emperor asked everyone to quiet
down. He looked at Ling, and then announced to the crowd, Behold your new
emperor! His name is Ling! Ling couldn't believe it. Ling couldn't even
grow his seed. How could he be the new emperor?

Then the emperor said,
One year ago today, I gave everyone here a seed. I told you to take the
seed, plant it, water it, and bring it back to me today. But I gave you all
boiled seeds, which would not grow. All of you, except Ling, have brought me
trees and plants and flowers. When you found that the seed would not grow, you
substituted another seed for the one I gave you. Ling was the only one with the
courage and honesty to bring me a pot with my seed in it. Therefore, he is the
one who will be the new emperor!

If you plant honesty,
you will reap trust.
If you plant goodness,
you will reap friends.
If you plant humility,
you will reap greatness.
If you plant
perseverance, you will reap victory.
If you plant
consideration, you will reap harmony.
If you plant hard
work, you will reap success.
If you plant forgiveness,
you will reap reconciliation.
If you plant openness,
you will reap intimacy.
If you plant patience,
you will reap improvements.
If you plant faith,
you will reap miracles.

But
If you plant
dishonesty, you will reap distrust.
If you plant selfishness,
you will reap loneliness.
If you plant pride,
you will reap destruction.
If you plant envy, you
will reap trouble.
If you plant laziness,
you will reap stagnation.
If you plant
bitterness, you will reap isolation.
If you plant greed,
you will reap loss.
If you plant gossip,
you will reap enemies.
If you plant worries,
you will reap wrinkles.
If you plant sin, you
will reap guilt.

[IslamCity] The Call to ISLAM to the Danish Editor

2006-03-12 Thread Muhammad Salman Faheem

Bismillah hir Rehman nir Rahim The Call to ISLAM to the Danish EditorThis is a Call to
Islam to the Danish editor Carsten Jute of Jyllands-Posten, the cartoonist and to the editors of other Newspaper who were involved in a disrespectful behavior towards the last messenger sent to mankind by almighty Allaah, the Prophet Mohammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Peace be upon the followers of Guidance, we Muslim nation invite you to Islam (i.e. Surrender to Allaah), Embrace Islam so you will be safe: Embrace Islam so that Allaah will bestow on you a double reward in this world and after your death. But if you reject this call of Islam you shall be responsible for misguiding yourself to your nation. The message of almighty Allaah (the creator) to the mankind is: O mankind! Worship your lord (Allaah), who created you and those who were before you so that you may become al-muttaqun(the pious). [Holy Quran 2:21]Who has made the earth a resting place for you, and sky as a canopy, and sent down water (rain) from the sky and brought forth therewith fruits as a provision for you. Then do not set up rivals unto Allah (in worship) while you know (that he alone has the right to be worshipped). [Holy Quran 2:22]And whoever seeks a religion other than Islam, it will not be accepted of him, and in the hereafter he will be one of the losers. [Holy Quran 3:85]Truly the religion with Allaah is Islam. [Holy Quran 3:19]Islam is not a new religion, it is the essence, the same message and guidance which Allaah revealed to all the prophets – Adam, Nun, Abraham, Is mail, Isaac, David, Moses, Jesus, Mohammed others (peace blessing of Allaah be upon them).
But the message which was revealed to Prophet Mohammad peace and blessings of Allah be upon him is Islam in its comprehensive complete, final form. Islam enjoins faith in the oneness uniqueness of Allaah, which makes man aware of the meaningfulness of the universe of his place in it. This belief frees him from all fears superstitions by making him conscious of the presence of the almighty Allaah of man's obligation towards him, this faith must be expressed treated in action The message of prophet Jesus (peace blessings of Allaah be upon him) was: Truly! Allah is my lord and your lord, so worship him (alone). This is the straight path. [Holy Quran 3:51]Therefore, believe in Allah and his messenger (Mohammad peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and in the light (the Quran), which we have sent down. And Allah is all aware of what you do. [Holy Quran 64:8]The only way for the salvation is to embrace Islam. But those who disbelieved (in the oneness of Allaah-Islamic monotheism) and denied our Ayaat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations etc.) they will be the dwellers of the fire to dwell therein forever. And worst indeed is that destination. [Holy Quran 64:10]Further more we Muslim nation calls each and every non-Muslim living on to this earth towards Islam, if you become Muslim you will be safe from the hell fire. To embrace Islam, you have to testify with your heart and tongue: - Laa ilaaha illallah Mohammad ur Rasool Allah "I testify that none deserves the worship except Allaah and Mohammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) is the last messenger of Allaah."There is no compulsion in religion. Verily the right path has become distinct from the wrong path. Whoever disbelieves in Taghoot (false deities)
and believes in Allaah, then he has grasped the most trust worth handhold that will never break, and Allaah is all hearer, all knower. [Holy Quran 2:256] Allaah is the Wali (protector or guardian) of those who believe. He brings them out from darkness into light. But as for those who disbelieve, their Auliya (supporters and helpers) are Taghoot (false deities or false leaders etc) they bring them out from light into darkness. Those are the dwellers of the fire, and they will abide there in forever. [Holy Quran 2:257]One of the many shortcomings, which have arisen in the world, is judging Islam by the media. Either is the
Dutch editor of Jyllands-Posten or Cartoonist or the Norwegian Christian magazine who tried to disrespect the last messenger. Such behaviors cannot distort the reality of the message of Islam brought by the last messenger of Allaah, Mohammad (peace blessings of Allaah be upon him). If they (Carsten Jute Others) realize that Mohammad (peace blessings of Allaah be upon him) was not only sent for Muslims but to all mankind, surely they will ask forgiveness from almighty Allaah about their mistake. The most high Allaah says: Say (O` Mohammad (peace blessings of Allaah be upon him)): " O` mankind! Verily, I am sent to you all as the messenger of Allaah- to whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. La ilah illah huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but he). [Holy Quran 7:158]If any one disbelieves the last messenger Mohammad (peace blessings of Allaah be upon him) or try to mock at

11 civilians killed in Iraq
blastsExplosions in Iraq have killed at least 11 people
and wounded 19 others - all civilians, police said. One of the deadly blasts
yesterday targeted an Iraqi army patrol in west Baghdad, killing nine civilians
and wounding six. Elsewhere a car bomb killed at least two people and wounded 13
as they entered a clinic. Some Iraqi clerics who have ties with the US, have
complained that they are under attack from death squads associated with the
Interior Ministry, in a bid to instigate secterial violence and civil war in the
country. At least 452 civilians have died in that violence this
week.

US military to 'move' Abu
Ghraib The US military in Iraq says it plans to transfer
detention operations in Baghdad away from Abu Ghraib Prison. A new detention
facility is being constructed at a site known as Camp Cropper, near Baghdad's
international airport, a US spokesman said. The name of Abu Ghraib prison was
synonymous with torture and cruelty under the regime of Saddam Hussein and now
in US-Occupied Iraq. About 4,500 inmates are held at Abu Ghraib and will be
transferred to Camp Cropper when construction was complete. Camp Copper will
therefore be the new 'Abu
Ghuraib'.

Iraq hangs 13 for insurgency role
The Iraqi authorities have hanged 13 people accused of
taking part in the insurgency, the first execution of militants since the US-led
invasion and occupation. "The competent authorities have today carried out the
death sentences of 13 terrorists," a cabinet statement said. Three convicted
murderers were hanged last September. The US-led coalition abolished the death
penalty in Iraq (sic) after the overthrow of Saddam Hussein, but it was
reinstated during the handover to Iraqi control in June 2004. With more than
14,000 people currently in US detention camps, it raises the possibility that
there could be many more
executions.

Qaida fugitive surrenders in
KuwaitA suspected al-Qaida member, sentenced in absentia
to 10 years in jail in Kuwait, has surrendered to authorities, security sources
said on Thursday. Meshal al-Shimmari, was sentenced in December for belonging to
the al-Qaida-linked Peninsula Lions group, which is said to have staged several
bloody attacks in Kuwait last year. A former Kuwaiti army conscript, he is one
of several stateless Arabs who were part of a group of 37 Islamists tried for
belonging to Osama bin Laden's al-Qaida in Iraq and Saudi Arabia. Kuwait, which
hosts up to 30,000 US troops, has cracked down on 'Islamists' opposing the
foreign military presence there. Diplomats say radical Islam is taking hold
among Kuwaiti
youth.

Doctors attack US over Guantanamo
More than 250 medical experts have signed a letter
condemning the US for force-feeding prisoners on hunger strike at Guantanamo
Bay, Cuba. The doctors said physicians at the military prison had to respect
inmates' right to refuse treatment. The letter, in the medical journal, the
Lancet, said doctors who used restraints and force-feeding should be punished by
their professional bodies. Detainees at the camp have said hunger-strikers were
strapped into chairs and force-fed through tubes inserted in their noses. Some
500 'terror' suspects are being held without trial at Guantanamo Bay. The US has
argued that the Geneva Convention does not apply to prisoners at the camp, who,
it says, are enemy combatants who continue to pose a threat to national security
(sic).

EU sees delay for UN force in
SudanThe European Union has said demands from the
Sudanese government could delay a decision to ask the UN to take over
peacekeeping duties in the troubled western Darfur region. The EU foreign policy
chief said yesterday that he could not guarantee the African Union would come to
an agreement about a UN mission on Friday, despite two days of inconclusive
efforts to persuade the Sudanese vice-president. The US has accused the
government of genocide and of arming Arab militias known colloquially as the
Janjaweed - a claim which Khartoum denies. Two million Sudanese have been
displaced in the Darfur region, according to
reports.

Bomb blast kills 3, injures at
least 14 in southeast TurkeyA bomb set off by suspected
Kurdish guerrillas killed three people and injured 14 others on Thursday in
Turkeys Kurdish dominated southeast, as militants intensify their fight for
autonomy in the region. Authorities were investigating whether a suicide bomber
carried out the attack in the southeastern city of Van, bordering Iran. The
blast near a supermarket heavily damaged a municipal vehicle and shattered the
windows of several other vehicles and nearby houses and businesses. Kurdish
guerrillas have escalated their attacks recently. The fighting has killed more
than 37,000 people since
1984.

[IslamCity] US Priests Launch Web site Refuting Da Vinci Code about Jesus (a.s. )

US Priests Launch Web site Refuting "Da Vinci
  Code"

"The Da Vinci Code" has sold
nearly 40 million copies worldwide.

  LOS ANGELES, March 10, 2006 (IslamOnline.net
News Agencies) - Ahead of the release of Ron Howard's movie based on the
best-selling novel "The Da Vinci Code" in May, US Catholic bishops on
Thursday, March 9, launched a Web site to refute the novel's allegations
about the marital relationship of Jesus Christ.
"The Da Vinci Code' is a mess, a riot of laughable
errors and serious misstatements. Almost every page has at least one of
each," the bishops wrote on the Web site Jesusdecoded.com, reported Agence
  France-Presse (AFP).
The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops
launched the new Web site to counter key claims made in Dan Brown's novel
that are to be brought to the big screen in Howard's movie.
"What this novel does (is) ... asks people to consider
equivalent to the mainstream Christian tradition quite a few odd claims.
Some are merely distortions of hypotheses advanced by serious scholars who
do serious research. Others, however, are inaccurate or false," the site
  says.
The bishops said the site was aimed at providing
"accurate information on the life of Jesus and the origins of Christianity
prior to the release of the movie.
It offers articles written by theologians, media
commentators, art experts and others that "provide background and also
rebut speculation and inaccuracies about Christ and the origins of
  Christianity.
Brown's novel, which has sold nearly 40 million copies
worldwide, hinges on the theory that Christ married Mary Magdalene and
  that they had children.
  Countering Distortion
Monsignor Francis Maniscalco of the Diocese of
Rockville Centre in New York, however, said that the Web site was not a
  knee-jerk defensive reaction.
"Reporters have asked whether even a bestselling novel
can seriously damage a Church of one billion believers. No, in the long
run, it cannot. But that is not the point. The concern of the Church is
for each and every person," he said on the Web site.
"If only one person were to come away with a distorted
impression of Jesus Christ or his Church, our concern is for that person
as if he or she were the whole world."
The movie version of the film, heralded as one of the
major cinematic events of 2006, will star Tom Hanks, French actress Audrey
Tautou, and British actors Sir Ian McKellen and Paul Bettany.
In 2003, a US news television was criticized by
Catholic bishops for intention to broadcast a one-hour program on whether
Jesus Christ had been a married man and a father.
The ABC News program, based also on "The Da Vinci
Code," was to air "Jesus, Mary and Da Vinci," to explore the lives of
  Jesus Christ and Mary Magdalene.
Muslim countries have been pressing the UN to "pass
binding resolutions obliging all countries to respect religions and
religious symbols, similarly to the anti-Semitism laws" in the aftermath
of Danish cartoons that lampooned Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be
  upon him).
They further wanted respect of religions a bedrock in
the planned UN Human Rights Council.
They said in a proposal to the United Nations that the
"defamation of religions and prophets is inconsistent with the right to
freedom of _expression_" and that states, organizations and the media have a
"responsibility in promoting tolerance and respect for religious and
  cultural values."

Here is an excerpt of a review of
the programme:

In
this compelling docudrama by Michael Winterbottom and Mat Whitecross, the
'Tipton Three' narrate their own experiences in America's controversial offshore
detention camp.

The Road To Guantánamo opens with archive footage of George W Bush, flanked by a
stern-faced Tony Blair, declaring his certain knowledge that all the detainees
held in Guantánamo are bad people. Everything that follows is
designed to turn these words inside out, as three young British Muslims tell
the story of how they came to be in US custody at Guantánamo for over
two years, and discuss the Kafkaesque horrors that awaited them there, until
finally they were released without charge or apology.
