[IslamCity] Move to change structure of Islami banks opposed

2006-03-15 Thread S A Hannan

Dear member of the list,

Assalamualikum.

You may know that there is a move to make Shariah Council for the islami Banks
optional, not mandatory and there are some newspapers writing against Sharaiah
Council. Today (14 march 2006) there is a news published in The New Nation
regarding this issue including the opinion of Shah Abdul Hannan, former finance
secretary and former chariman of Islami Bank Bangladesh Ltd. I am forwarding
the portion of that report which contains his opinion about the matter.

SHAKIL ABDULLAH

Move to change structure of Islami banks opposed

A move initiated to make for making Shariah Councils for Islamic Banks
optional ,not mandatory, has been opposedby a majority of members of the focus
group on Islami Banks.Experts in Banking and Finance find the move unnecessary
because the Islami Banks have been faring better than other Private Commercial
Banks(PCBs)Success of Islami Banks has prompted somePCBs to openIslamibanking
branches in Dhaka and some other parts of the country, they pointed out.

When contacted former finance secretaryShah Abdul Hannantold this correspondent
that there was some misleading news in some news papers about the Central
Shariah Board(CSB) and Shariah Councils of Islami Banks in Bangladesh.

The CSB was established on August 16, 2001 in a meeting of all the chairmen and
managing directors of Islami banks. Each bank was represented by four members.
The meeting was chaired by Shah Abdul Hannan. Khatib of Baitul Mukarram mosque
and chairman of shariah council of several banks Obaidul Huq was made chairman
of Central Shariah Board.

He also said the formation of the CSB started following a meeting of the
managing directors of the Islami banks and Bangladesh Bank authority. The
decision of the meeting drew the attention of all the Islami banks and asked
them to form Joint Shariah Board. The matter was considered by each Islami
banks and they proposed to the Islami Bank Consultative Forum (IBCF) to form
the Central Shariah Board.

Shah Abdul Hannan also said there might be conflict of opinions among the
scholars of Shariah Council of various Islami banks regarding the
permissibility or non-permissibility of some modes of investment. If opinion of
various Islami Banks differ on permissibility, the people may get confused. So
the need was felt of a higher collective body of scholars where the difference
can be resolved or where banks can refer their problems on islamic issues. And
this was the reason why the central bank and individual banks at that time felt
the need for the Central Shariah Board.

He further said all the Islami banks are now members of the CSB and Bangladesh
Bank refers issues to the CSB for advice. He claimed that CSB never violate any
law, operating within the legal system and it only advices the member banks and
the central bank on their request and references, he added.

He said CSB was not a regulatory body; it neither issues any regulation on
banking nor violates any Bangladesh Bank regulation. The CSB only research on
Islami banking, publishes a journal and advice the banks on Shariah issues. So
any understanding to the contrary of operation of the CSB is misconceived and
due to ignorance of history of the formation of it.

He also said the central bank issued the license or charter to Islami banks
with the condition that there shall be a Shariah Council. According to the
order all the Islami banks have Shariah Council in line with the islami banks
of the world

He said it is working fine and there is no need to change a good thing.

He argued the government and the central bank authority not to compound
problems, which might threaten Shariah Board for the betterment of the Islami
banking in Bangladesh.

[IslamCity] Lesson in Life : Sand and Stone

2006-03-15 Thread Curtis Sharif

Bismillah, FYI Peace, Curtis SharifSand and StoneTwo friends, Ismail and Ibrahim were walking through the desert. As the sun was beating down on their heads and they were thirsty for water, they began to argue. The argument got more and more heated and eventually Ismail struck Ibrahim across the face. Ibrahim felt hurt inside, but without anything to say, he wrote in the sand: "Today, my best friend slapped me in the face".They kept on walking, until eventually they came across an oasis where they decided to stop and bathe. Ibrahim jumped in and began to wash, while Ismail sat back and relaxed. Suddenly, Ibrahim began to scream and shout. He had developed a cramp and was having difficulty keeping his head above water. He was drowning. Ismail dived in after him and brought him gently to shore. When Ibrahim recovered from the shock, he scratched a message on a nearby
stone: "Today, my best friend saved my life".Ismail who had saved and slapped his best friend Ibrahim, asked him, "Why, after I hurt you, you wrote in the sand and now you write on a stone?"Ibrahim smiled and replied, "When a friend hurts us, we should write his deeds in the sand where the winds of forgiveness can blow it away, and when a friend does something good, we should engrave it in stone where it shall remain for eternity.""Show forgiveness, enjoin what is good, and turn away from the ignorant (i.e. don't punish them). If a suggestion from Shaytaan assails your mind, seek refuge with Allah; for He heareth and knoweth (all things)" [Surah al-A'raf, 7:199-200]Author: Unknown

[IslamCity] SAS man quits in protest at 'illegal' Iraq war

2006-03-15 Thread Showkat Ali

SAS man quits in protest at 'illegal' Iraq warhttp://www.guardian.co.uk/Iraq/Story/0,,1729553,00.htmlRichard Norton-TaylorMonday March 13, 2006GuardianAn SAS soldier has resigned from the army, describing the military interventionin Iraq as a "war of aggression" and "morally wrong". The soldier said hewitnessed "dozens of illegal acts" by US forces there.Ben Griffin, 28, who left after three months in Baghdad, is believed to be thefirst SAS soldier to refuse to go into combat and to leave the army on moralgrounds. His decision comes at a time of growing disenchantment among Britishsoldiers about their presence in Iraq. This week, pre-trial hearings are due to start into the court martial of FlightLieutenant Malcolm Kendall-Smith, an RAF doctor who is refusing
to return toIraq on the grounds that the war is illegal. Mr Kendall-Smith's lawyer, JustinHugheston-Roberts, said yesterday: "We will be arguing that he has no case toanswer because, without a UN mandate, the invasion of Iraq was manifestlyunlawful and any subsequent order was therefore unlawful."Mr Griffin told the Sunday Telegraph yesterday that he had expected to face acourt martial for leaving the SAS. Instead, he was discharged with a glowingtestimonial. When he was on leave in March last year he told his commanding officer he hadno intention of returning to Iraq. He said he was very angry "at the way thepoliticians have lied to the British public about the war. But mostimportantly, I didn't join the British army to conduct American foreignpolicy."He said he had witnessed dozens of illegal acts by US fighters who viewedIraqis as "sub-human". Mr Griffin said: "I saw a lot of things in Baghdad thatwere illegal
or just wrong. The Americans were doing things like chuckingfarmers into Abu Ghraib, or handing them over to the Iraqi authorities, knowingfull well they were going to be tortured."The Ministry of Defence does not comment officially on any activities involvingBritain's special forces. However, defence officials did not deny that MrGriffin left the SAS in protest against the war in Iraq. The SAS has been operating under cover in Iraq since the invasion, working withUS special forces seeking out insurgents and foreign Arab fighters linked to orproclaiming sympathy with al-Qaida.British officers have told the Guardian that they have been dismayed by USmilitary tactics in Iraq. They also say that attempts to train the Iraqi armyand police are fraught with problems.Comment:Something which Muslims have known for years is now finally sinking into the minds of many other
people who follow the principle of seeing is believing and they have finally seen the horrors being committed by the so called " liberators" against our brothers and sisters the Muslim Iraqi people. What now needs to be discussed and debated by all people is, What is the solution for Iraq? Is it western democracy or another solution which is in tune with the Muslim Iraqi people and has a proven track record of solving humanities problems and under which the Sunni, Shia and Christians and even idol worshippers lived peacefully and side by side for hundreds of years before the British carved up Iraq and installed pro-western leaders, who were then succeeded by another pro-western puppet the man himself Saddam.

[IslamCity] Iraq Invasion - Strategies or Diversions by Mighty Bush

2006-03-15 Thread Alan Border

Strategies or Diversions? By Peter Schweizer – USA TODAY – August 17, 2005Critics have assailed President Bush for his strategy on terrorism, calling the war in Iraq a diversion from
the main task of defeating al-Qaeda. But just days after the 60th anniversary of victory in World War II, it is striking to note how Franklin D. Roosevelt faced very similar critics and how President Bush has adopted a grand strategy very much in the Roosevelt tradition. With a logic that Bush would find familiar, FDR was lambasted by his critics for his WWII military strategy of defeating Germany first before focusing on Japan. They considered Germany a diversion. Wasn't it Japan and not Germany that had attacked us at Pearl Harbor, asked Sens. Arthur Vandenberg and A.B. Chandler? One foreign minister called the idea "suicidal
heresy." By 1942, American generals were complaining that precious resources were being diverted to fight Germans in North Africa, hardly a direct strategic concern. All of this should sound familiar in the debate over Iraq and the war on terrorism. Conspiracy theories abounded then as they do today. Jon Meacham, in his book Franklin and Winston, writes about how FDR's critics believed that his Germany-first strategy was a result of excessive British influence. It wasn't a conspiracy involving
Israel-loving neocons back then, but Anglophiles, who were manipulating the White House to serve British ends. Both presidents also faced wild conspiracy theories that they manipulated intelligence to start a war: If Bush distorted intelligence to invade Iraq, FDR purposely ignored evidence that Japan was going to attack Pearl Harbor. Then and now: Cries of politics Democratic Sen. Millard Tydings essentially accused Roosevelt of ignoring his military advisers. Republican heavyweight Thomas Dewey, sounding like some of Bush's critics today, claimed that FDR's strategy of Germany first was really about domestic politics: FDR wanted to make sure that Pacific
commander and potential GOP presidential candidate Gen. Douglas MacArthur didn't get the glory. In a very strict and narrow military sense, FDR's critics were correct, just as Bush's are today. Germany did not pose an immediate military threat to the United States the way that Japan
did. In a fascinating parallel to Bush and Iraq, part of FDR's motivation for defeating Germany first was fear that the Nazis were working on atomic weapons. Alas, postwar intelligence revealed that Germany (like Saddam Hussein's Iraq) did not have much of a program. But military victory led most to ignore this massive intelligence failure. FDR was not concerned with just the narrow military question of threats. Like Islamist extremists and secular Saddam, Imperial Japan and Nazi Germany were opportunistic allies. Though the Nazis considered the Japanese racially inferior, no better than mongrels, they were part of a worldwide movement. Using the same logic that Bush does today, FDR understood the need for a grand strategy that
destroyed the movement, not just certain military aggressors that were part of it. Grand strategy is not only about defeating enemies, but also defeating them in a sequence and a manner that leads to a favorable postwar situation. Can anyone seriously doubt that defeating al-Qaeda but leaving the political situation in the Middle East the same is at best a temporary victory? Bush, as FDR did, understands that only with political transformation will the postwar prospects for peace improve. A worldview
The threat we face today is more amorphous and less easy to define than it was during World War II. But the strategic principles remain the same. Bush's critics, like Roosevelt's, are flawed in their thinking because they lack a grand strategy. Concerned only (or so they say) with the military defeat of al-Qaeda, they have nothing to say about defeating a worldwide movement or how to build a foundation for a successful postwar world. There have been numerous tactical mistakes made in the war on terrorism, just as there were under Roosevelt 60 years ago. Nonetheless, we cannot let tragic, tactical setbacks, like the recent deaths of 20 Marines from one unit, lead us to abandon the grand strategy. Allied errors at the Battle of the Bulge didn't mean the sweep across Europe was wrong. Bush is in many ways FDR's strategic soul mate. His war on terror is a total global war against a movement comprised of terrorist groups and their state sponsors. By ousting both Saddam and the Taliban, he has removed two important components of
the worldwide terrorist movement. And his grand strategy is slowly achieving results. The forces of reform in the Middle East have been strengthened; the terrorist movement has been psychologically shaken. By destroying Saddam's military machine overnight, he has completely changed the psychology of the war on terrorism. Bush's strategy is one that FDR would understand well. Peter Schweizer is a research fellow

push for regime change in Iran through confrontation rather than diplomacy,
according to an American newspaper. The Washington Post reported that the Bush
administration intends to mount a campaign against Tehran's religious leaders in
its efforts to build international pressure against Iran's nuclear programme.
The newspaper also said Bush, according to aides, had personally been spending
more time on the Iran issue and his advisers had invited 30 to 40 specialists
for consultations in recent months. Al-Hariri murder: Woman held in

wanted for bank fraud and suspected of links to the assassination of former
Lebanese Prime Minister Rafiq al-Hariri. Acting on an anonymous tip, police
arrested Rana Abdel Rahim Koleilat, 39, on Sunday in Brazil's Sao Paulo city.
Koleilat, who was carrying a false passport identifying her as Rana Klailat of
Northern Ireland, offered police up to 200,000 Brazilian reals ($94,000) to
release her and was in turn arrested for attempted bribery. Koleilat was wanted
in Lebanon for bank fraud and for questioning by the Independent International

Revolutionary Court has said he issued death warrant for Shia men accused of
plotting to assassinate Saddam Hussein. Awad Hamad al-Bandar, who oversaw the
trial of 148 Shia men accused of the assassination plot in 1982, said in court
on Monday that he personally issued a death warrant for them and insisted that
it was legal. Al-Bandar, the first of the four senior defendants to give
testimony in his own defence, accused the dead men of being part of a plot by
the Dawa party to kill Saddam during Iraq's war with Iran. The killing of the
men from the Shia town of Dujail is at the heart of the case. He also said farms
had been razed around the town in
reprisal.

two of its bloodiest days of violence after attackers struck two markets in a

Sunday. The killers struck with three car bombs and four mortars, causing
pandemonium in Sadr City. Dozens of market stalls and vehicles were destroyed as
the explosives ripped through the poor neighbourhood at peak shopping time, just
before sundown, as residents bought provisions for their evening meal.
Meanwhile, another 10 people were killed in a bomb blast yesterday, raising the
death toll to over 55 in the past two
days.

US forces

forces have detained 11 people in connection with a roadside bombing in eastern
Afghanistan which killed four American soldiers. The arrests came during a
continued assault by US soldiers against insurgents in the Pech Valley of Kunar

insurgents believed responsible for the attack," a US military statement said,
adding that the hunt was in progress to kill or capture other rebels.
"Operations to kill or capture other extremists, deny them sanctuary, and
restore stability to the area are continuing," it said.

headquarters that we were not going to detain certain people because, as far as
we were concerned, they were not a threat because they were old men or obviously
farmers, but the Americans would say: "No, bring them back," Griffin said.
Griffin said he believed US soldiers had no respect for Iraqis, whom they
regarded as "sub-human". "You could almost split the Americans into two groups:
ones who were complete crusaders, intent on killing Iraqis, and the others who
were in Iraq because the army was going to pay their college fees," he said.

INSTITUTION OF IMAMATE FOR THE GUIDANCE OF HIS
CREATURES AND APPOINTED 12 IMAMS TILL QIYAMAH ; THE
WORLD WILL END WITH THE 12TH IMAM AND QIYAMAH WILL
COME. THESE IMAMS RE CONFERRED WITH RANK AND STATUS
HIGHER TO ALL THE PROPHETS EXCEPT RASUL-ALLAH (SAW).
THE OBEDIENCE OF 12 IMAMS IS A CONDITION FOR SALVATION
IN THE WORLD HEREAFTER.

THE 12TH IMAM, MUHAMMAD BIN AL-HASAN (IMAM GHAIB
MAHDI) WHO ACCORDING TO SHIA TRADITION WAS BORN ABOUT
1150 YEARS FROM NOW IN 255 OR 256 H DISAPPEARED
MIRACOUSLY AT THE AGE OF 4 OR 5 YEARS IN (SARRA MAN
RAA) A CAVE NEAR BAQHDAD IN IRAQ AND IS STILL ALIVE.
THE SHIAS ALSO ENTERTAIN THIS BELIEF THAT FOR YEARS
AFTER HIS DISAPPEARANCE IN THE CAVE, A LINE OF
COMMUNICATION WAS ESTABLISHED WITH THEM THROUGH
TRUSTED LIEUTENANTS AND LETTERS AND APPEALS OF THE
SHIAS WERE SENT TO HIM FOR DISPOSAL AND REPLIES IN
THIS REGARD WERE ALSO RECEIVED FROM HIM. THIS SHORT
SPAN OF TIME EXTENDING OVER A FEW YEARS IS CALLED IN
SHIA TERMINOLOGY. AFTERWARDS THE POINT OF CONTACT WITH
THE IMAM THROUGH MESSENGERS ENDED AND THERE WAS NO
POSSIBILITY FOR ANYONE TO ESTABLISH A CHANNEL OF
COMMUNICATION WITH HIM. THIS IS NOW WELL OVER 1150
YEARS. THE SHIAS ENTERTAIN THIS BELIEF THAT HE (IMAM
MAHDI) WILL COME OUT FROM HIS CAVE ANYTIME WHICH IS
DEEMED APPROPRIATE. WHEN SUCH A TIME WILL COME FOR HIS
RE-APPEARANCE THAT WOULD BE CALLED IN SHIA
TERMINOLOGY.

ACCORDING TO KHOMENI WHO IS THE ARCHITECT AND FOUNDER
OF SO-CALLED ISLAMIC REVOLUTION IN IRAN, FUQQHA
I.E. SHIA MUJTAHIDEEN AFTER THE, MASOOM IMAMS AND
DURING THE WAITING PERIOD (OF IMAM MAHDI ) ARE WASI
(TRUSTEES) OF RASUL-ALLAH (SAW) AND THEY ARE CHARGED
WITH THE RESPONSIBILITY OF ALL THOSE AFFAIRS WHICH WAS
ENTRUSTED TO THE IMAMS.p.75

UNLIKE OTHER LEADERS OF REVOLUTION AND HEADS OF
GOVERNMENT THE POSITION OF KHOMENI IS ALTOGETHER
DIFFERENT : RATHER ON THE BASIS OF SHIA BELIEF IN
IMAMATE AND ACCORDING TO THE PRINCIPLES OF--
-- HE IS THE ACTING IMAM GHAIB DURING THE AWAITING
PEROD OF IMAM MAHDI AND WASI IS BINDING ON THE PEOPLE
IN THE SAME WAY AS THAT OF IMAM AND NABI AND ALL THE
INSTRUCTIONS/DIRECTIONS ISSUED BY HIM ARE ON ACCOUNT
OF THIS POSITION.

THE CHAIN OF IMAMATE ACCORDING TO SHIAS HAS ENDED WITH
THE PERSON OF IMAM GHAIB (HIDDEN) BUT BECAUSE OF THEIR
BELIEF THAT THE PRESENCE OF A DIVINELY COMMISSIONED
IMAM IS A NECESSARY REQUISITE FOR THE GUIDANCE OF
HUMAN BEINGS IN THIS WORLD WHICH SHOULD BE A PRECEDENT
FOR THE PEOPLE AND THIS ACCORDING TO SHIAS IS INCUMENT
UPON ALLAH. AS SUCH IMAM GHAIB WILL LIVE UPTO QIYAMAH
AND WILL APPEAR ANYTIME FROM HIS CAVE BEFORE QIYAMAH.
HE WILL BRING WITH HIM THE ORIGINAL COPY OF THE QUR'AN
COMPILED BY HADHRAT ALI (WHICH IS DIFFERENT FROM THE
PRESENT VERSION) ALONGWITH SUCH OTHER MATERIAL FOR THE
GUIDANCE OF MANKIND AND TREASURES OF KNOWLEDGE LIKE
AL-JAFFAR AND AL-JAMIAH WHICH WERE BEQUEATED TO HIM
FROM THE EARLIER IMAMS.

THE SHIA IMAMS OCCUPY SUCH AN EXALTD RANK THAT THERE
IS HUSTLE AND BUSTLE IN THE WORLD BECAUSE OF THEM. IF
FOR A MOMENT, THIS WORLD IS BEREFT OF AN IMAM, THE
EARTH WILL SINK AND THE WHOLE UNIVERSE BECOME A
NON-ENTITY. THE IMAMS HELD MIRACLOUS POWERS. THE
ANGELS CAME TO THEM IN THE SAME WAY THEY CAME TO THE
EARLIER PROPHETS. THEY ASCENDED TO HEAVEN AND HAD A
VISION OF THE MOST HIGH (MIRAI). REVELATIONS CAME TO
THEM FORM ALLAH. THESE IMAMS WERE ALL IN ALL AND
POSSESSED ALL THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE PROPHETS. THEY HAD
THE REVEALED BOOKS LIKE TORAH, ZUBOOR AND INJIL ETC IN
THEIR ORIGINAL FORM AND THEY RECITED THESE IN THOSE
LANGUAGES IN WHICH THESE WERE REVEALED. THEY WERE
GIFTED WITH SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE OBTAINED DIRECTLY FROM
ALMIGHTY ALLAH OR THROUGH OTHER SOURCES. THEY HAD THE
RIGHT AND POWER TO MAKE A THING LAWFUL OR UNLAWFUL AS
THEY PLEASED. EVERY ONE OF THESE IMAMS KNEW ABOUT THE
TIMING OF THEIR DEATH AND DEATH WAS ALSO IN THEIR
CONTROL!

THIS IS IN A NUTSHULL THE POSITION OF SHIAS IN REGARD
TO THEIR IMAMS AND OFFICE OF IMAMATE AS DESCRIBED IN
THEIR OWN AUTHENTIC BOOKS. OUR AIM IS ONLY TO
ENLIGHTEN THE UNWEARY SUNNI MULSIMS WHO UNDER THE
SPELL OF IRANIAN PROPAGANDA MACHINERY ARE LED TO
BELIEVE THAT THE SHIA-SUNNI DIFFERENCES ARE ONLY MINOR
TECHNICAL POINTS AND FIQHI MASSAILS. ALTHOUGH THE
SHIAS CLAIM TO BE FOLLOWING THE QUR'AN, THE FACT IS
THAT THE SHARI'AH OF THEIR IMAMS AND NOT THE SHARI'AH
OF THE QUR'AN IS THE RELIGION OF THE SHIAS.

THE SHIA RELIGION REVOLVES AROUND IMAMATE. ACCORDING
TO ALLAMA BAQIR MAJLISI, CHIEF OF MUHADITHIN, THE
HIDDEN IMAM (WHO HAS DISAPPEARED SINCE 23RD RAMDHAN
259 H) AFTER CENTURIES WILL MAKE HIS APPEARANCE WHEN
THE NUMBER OF SINCERE SHIA FOLLOWERS TO PROTECT HIS
LIFE WILL SWELL TO 313. HE RELATES FROM IMAM MUHAMMAD
BAQIR : AT THE ADVENT OF IMAM MAHDI (THE LAST SHIA
HIDDEN IMAM) ALLAH WILL HELP HIM THROUGH ANGLES. THE
FIRST TO SWEAR ALLEGIANCE AT HIS HANDS WOULD BE
MUHAMMAD-UR-RASUL-ALLAH AND THEN ALI. (HAQ AL-YAQEEN,
p. 347).

[IslamCity] Islam and democracy : How far compatible? by Shah Abdul Halim from the New Nation, Dhaka

Islam and democracy : How far compatible?By
  Shah Abdul Halim*Fri, 10 Mar
  2006

I shall raise three issues. First of
all, I would discuss democracy. It is useless to debate whether Islam is
democratic, presidential, parliamentarian or monarchic. Some people today are
saying that Islam is against democracy. Islam and democracy are incompatible.
Any form of government is Islamic provided it meets the basic principles
of Islam. We, therefore, see that our earlier Islamic scholars termed king Abdul
Aziz as the fifth rightly guided caliph although he was a king. He is even today
considered a caliph and not a king because of the presence of Shura-
consultative system and human welfare being the objective of his kingship. This
consultation by the head of the state or by the head of the government is
obligatory and not optional. Therefore, Islamic political system cannot be
described undemocratic.I am of the view that
Bangladesh is essentially an Islamic state by its
constitution. Only thing we require is that we have to constitute a committee in
the Ministry of Law, Justice Parliamentary Affairs consisting of eminent
Islamic scholars, Ulama, jurists and Fuqaha, Islamic theologians having the
essential ability for expounding Islamic law and being an authority thereon,
just, virtuous, abreast of time, having political and social insight, judicious
and who command and enjoy the trust and confidence of the people. The members of
this committee shall examine and review all drafts acts to be passed by
Parliament (also all Presidential Ordinances) and give its views on such act(s)
to the Government so that parliamentary enactments are not contrary to the
tenets and precepts of Islam. The inclusion of such members in the committee
will ensure that the Government is being judiciously advised at the drafting
stage so that no law repugnant to the Quran and Sunnah comes before the Cabinet
or Parliament for consideration. Some people in
Bangladesh
are clamoring for Law of Allah- demanding implementation of Law of Allah-
Shariah without explaining or elaborating the idea. Really, we have in
Bangladesh Islamic Law in practice. The Law of Inheritance, the Law of
Endowments, the Marriage Law - all these are by and large Islamic and akin to
Shariah. Allah has given us a lot of freedom to enumerate laws- for example the
municipal law or the traffic law, whether we walk on the left side or the right
side of road etc. etc. As regards Hudud, Capital Punishment- Caliph Omar has
suspended the amputation of hands of the thief and he decreed that this law
couldn't be implemented if people are without food and they steal. Now what will
happen if we expound this law in case of adultery? Can we implement Islamic
Penal Law for adultery as long as we keep the door of obscenity open such as
brothels, bars, obscene movies, obscene printed books and pornography or the
government cannot ensure the marriage at appropriate age? Really what moral
authority we have to demand implementation of Hudud before creating congenial
and healthy social environment? Only recently Tariq Ramadan, distinguished
educator of Philosophy at the University Fribourg,
Switzerland and an eminent Arab Islamic scholar and
grandson of Hasan Al Banna, has given a call for the suspension of Hudud for the
time being till all relevant issues have been examined by the
scholars.Recently a retired Secretary to the Government has examined all
laws of Bangladesh and viewed that 98 percent of these
laws are Islamic in the sense that these laws contain nothing in conflict with
the Text of the Quran or Sunnah. Prof. Dr. Yusuf Al Qaradawi, Dean of the
Faculty of Shariah, Qatar Islamic University, after examining some laws of
Qatar, an Arab Muslim country, wrote in his book 'Priorities of the Islamic
Movement in the Coming Phase' that he found nothing objectionable in these laws
and many of these laws fall within the purview of amr bil maruf wa nahi al
munkar - realizing interests and removing evils but were not directly linked
with any revealed Text except for one or two of them. Let us again go
back to the question whether Islamic political system is democratic or not.
Hizbut Tahrir Bangladesh
is demanding Caliphate without elaborating how the Caliph of the Ummah will be
elected or chosen and what shall be the qualification of such Caliph and what
shall be the qualification of those who shall elect or choose the Caliph and
what shall be the tenure of such Caliph. Hizbut Tahrir
Bangladesh also did not explain how to select or
elect Caliph of Bangladeshi Ummah or how the Parliament will be formed or how
laws will be made. If you look at the Quran, you will find that Queen
(or the ruler) of Sheba was not removed from the throne even
after she became a Muslim although she was a lady. Here comes the question
whether in Islam woman is permitted to become the head of the state

http://www.usc.edu/dept/MSA/quran/008.qmt.html

YUSUFALI: (O Unbelievers!) if ye prayed for victory and judgment, now
hath the judgment come to you: if ye desist (from wrong), it will be
best for you: if ye return (to the attack), so shall We. Not the least
good will your forces be to you even if they were multiplied: for
verily Allah is with those who believe!
PICKTHAL: (O Qureysh!) If ye sought a judgment, now hath the judgment
come unto you. And if ye cease (from persecuting the believers) it
will be better for you, but if ye return (to the attack) We also shall
return. And your host will avail you naught, however numerous it be,
and (know) that Allah is with the believers (in His Guidance).
SHAKIR: If you demanded a judgment, the judgment has then indeed come
to you; and if you desist, it will be better for you; and if you turn
back (to fight), We (too) shall turn back, and your forces shall avail
you nothing, though they may be many, and (know) that Allah is with
the believers.

 - A dearth of rain and snow into February promoted intensifying
drought across the Southwest from Arizona into west Texas and
Oklahoma, and the odds favor continued drought across the region into
May, if not beyond. Although shorter-range forecasts show at least a
temporary change to a wetter pattern during the last half of February
in Arizona and New Mexico, significant drought relief is not expected.
The seasonal temperature and precipitation outlooks for March-May
point to the likelihood for above-normal temperatures and below-normal
precipitation, supporting drought continuation well into spring.
Reservoir storage across much of the Southwest remains in good
condition thanks to last year's storms, but the ongoing drought poses
a threat to upcoming spring and summer streamflows, as well as
agriculture. Wildfire danger remains a major concern across the
region. In addition, there is a risk that the drought currently
affecting the southern Plains could spread northward across Kansas and
eastern Colorado and merge with the drought in Nebraska and Iowa. The
odds for improvement continue to look better to the east, with more
moisture on tap for eastern portions of Texas and Oklahoma, as well as
Arkansas. Nevertheless, with 12-month rainfall deficits exceeding 20
inches in the northeast Texas-southeast Oklahoma region,
drought-ending rains are unlikely anytime soon. Ongoing drought, but
with some improvement, is seen for Illinois and eastern Iowa. A large
storm system near the start of the forecast period on February 15-16
was bringing widespread moisture to the region, but twelve-month
precipitation deficits of 12 inches and greater from northern Illinois
into eastern Iowa mean that this region is also a long ways from
seeing an end to their drought. In the Southeast, heavy rains in early
February ended short-term dryness concerns, but the seasonal and
monthly forecasts of below-normal rains suggest increased risk for
drought from Florida into southern Georgia.

[IslamCity] Every Breath Is A Precious Jewel

Every Breath Is A Precious Jewel

Abu Hamid al-Ghazali

Ihyaa Uloom ad-Deen

Life is nothing but an accumulation of many breaths. So every breath is just a precious diamond which cannot be purchased with anything in the world. It is a priceless jewel which has got no substitute in value. So in movements and talks, and in sorrows and happiness, such a priceless breath should not be spent in vain. To destroy it is to court destruction. An intelligent man cannot lose it.

When a man gets up at dawn, he should enter into an agreement with himself just as a tradesman contracts with his partner. At that time, he should address his mind thus: O mind, you have been given no other property as precious as life. When it will end, the principal will end and despondency will come in seeking profit in business.

Today is a new day. Allah has given you time, that is, He has delayed your death. He has bestowed upon you innumerable gifts. Think that you are already dead. So don't waste time.

Every breath is a precious jewel.
Man has got for each day and night twenty-four treasure houses in twenty-four hours. Fill up these then find them filled up with divine sights in the world next. If they are not filled up with good works, they will be filled up with intense darkness wherefrom a bad stench will come out and envelop them all around. Another treasure house will neither give him happiness nor sorrow. That is an hour in which he slept, or was careless, or was engaged in any lawful work of this world. He will feel grieved for its remaining vacant.

[IslamCity] Forgotten Muslims

2006-03-15 Thread Shaikh Hyder

Last Updated: Saturday, 11 March 2006, 00:26 GMT E-mail this to a friendPrintable version
   Burma's forgotten RohingyaBy Mike Thompson
BBC News, in Bangladesh They have been called one of the world's most persecuted people. Some argue that they are also one of the most forgotten. Thousands of Rohingya fled Burma for Bangladesh in 1992
The Rohingya people of western Burma's Arakan State are forbidden from marrying or travelling without permission and have no legal right to own land or property. Not only that but even though groups of them have been living in Burma for hundreds of years, they are also denied citizenship by the country's military government.Listen to Mike Thompson's reports on BurmaFor decades this Muslim group of ethnic-Indo origins have been considered the lowest of the low in this mainly Buddhist country. In addition to their almost total
lack of legal rights many have been regularly beaten by police, forced to do slave labour and jailed for little or no reason. In 1992, 250,000 Rohingyas, which is a third of their population, fled over Burma's border into Bangladesh to escape the persecution. Fourteen years later more than 20,000 of them are still in the same refugee camps and around 100,000 more are living illegally in the surrounding area. Harsh conditionsIn one camp I visited, Kutupalong, near the town of Cox's Bazaar, up to 16 refugees live in a room that is little more than three metres square. One young mother described conditions there:"It's very painful to stay in a tiny place like this. The food given to me is not enough for my family. The local villagers are not friendly to us. We don't dare go out of the camp in case the villagers beat us."
Another women rushed up to me in floods of tears. She showed me a bullet mark just above her waist."They shot me 17 months ago, it was the police that did it. And they tortured me," she said. The woman, who dressed from head to toe in black and looked like she was in her mid-30s, went on to explain that it happened when refugees in the camp protested about efforts by the Bangladesh government to send them back to Burma.Rohingya
people told that when they fled here back in1992 they believed they were coming to a fellow Muslim nation that would welcome them. But, one man insisted, they were not wanted in Burma and they were not wanted by Bangladesh either."This country is like Burma. We are persecuted here just like we were persecuted there. We are like a football being kicked from one to the other."Bangladesh's government insists that it has no desire to persecute the Rohingyas. The country's Deputy Foreign Minister, AH Muniruzzaman, argued that it is simply that being a poor country it is struggling to come to terms with the strain of so many on its soil. Mr Muniruzzaman said, however, that 8,000 Rohingyas were cleared to go home and another 12,000 should follow soon after that. When I asked him if these same people had been asked whether they wanted to go back he said he was not sure
about that.Christopher Lee, the head of the United Nations refugee agency, UNHCR, in Bangladesh, is not impressed. "The government of Bangladesh knows the reason why most Rohingyas are not going back. And even if they don't we have been telling them," he said.Finding out what is happening to Rohingya people now in Burma is particularly difficult. Troops on both sides of the Burmese border are on high alert and I was told that it would be almost impossible for me to slip into Arakan State unnoticed. To get around this I arranged for two Rohingya men to come out of the country and meet me in Bangladesh, neither of whom were prepared to be identified. The older man confirmed that little had changed over the years for his people in Burma.

[IslamCity] A Coffee Cup

2006-03-15 Thread `..*Mina*..`

A group of alumni, highly established in their careers, got together to visit their old university lecturer. Conversation soon turned into complaints about stress in work and life. Offering his guests coffee, the lecturer went to the kitchen and returned with a large pot of coffee and an assortment of cups: porcelain, plastic, glass, some plain-looking and some expensive and exquisite, telling them to help themselves to hot coffee.

When all the students had a cup of coffee in hand, the lecturer said: If you noticed, all the nice-looking, expensive cups were taken up, leaving behind the plain and cheap ones.

"While it is but normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the source of your problems and stress".

What all of you really wanted was coffee, not the cup, but you consciously went for the better cups and are eyeing each other's cups. Now, if Life is coffee, then the jobs, money and position in society are the cups. They are just tools to hold and contain Life, but the quality of Life doesn't change.

Sometimes, by concentrating only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the coffee in it.

So don't let the cups drive you...enjoy the coffee instead.

[IslamCity] NEWS: How Islamic inventors changed the world

2006-03-15 Thread Abdul Alim

How Islamic inventors changed the world From coffee to cheques and the three-course meal, the Muslim world has given us many innovations that we take for granted in daily life. As a new exhibition opens, Paul Vallely nominates 20 of the most influential- and identifies the men of genius behind them Published:11 March 2006 1 The story goes that an Arab named Khalid was tending his goats in the Kaffa region of southern Ethiopia, when he noticed his animals became livelier after eating a certain berry. He boiled the berries to make the first coffee. Certainly the first record of the
drink is of beans exported from Ethiopia to Yemen where Sufis drank it to stay awake all night to pray on special occasions. By the late 15th century it had arrived in Mecca and Turkey from where it made its way to Venice in 1645. It was brought to England in 1650 by a Turk named Pasqua Rosee who opened the first coffee house in Lombard Street in the City of London. The Arabic qahwa became the Turkish kahve then the Italian caffé and then English coffee. 2 The ancient Greeks thought our eyes emitted rays, like a laser, which enabled us to see. The first person to realise that light enters the eye, rather than leaving it, was the 10th-century Muslim mathematician, astronomer and physicist Ibn al-Haitham. He invented the first pin-hole camera after noticing the way light came through a hole in window shutters. The smaller the hole, the better the picture, he worked out, and set up the first Camera
Obscura (from the Arab word qamara for a dark or private room). He is also credited with being the first man to shift physics from a philosophical activity to an experimental one.3 A form of chess was played in ancient India but the game was developed into the form we know it today in Persia. From there it spread westward to Europe - where it was introduced by the Moors in Spain in the 10th century - and eastward as far as Japan. The word rook comes from the Persian rukh, which means chariot.4 A thousand years before the Wright brothers a Muslim poet, astronomer, musician and engineer named Abbas ibn Firnas made several attempts to construct a flying machine. In 852 he jumped from the minaret of the Grand Mosque in Cordoba using a loose cloak stiffened with wooden struts. He hoped to glide like a bird. He didn't. But
the cloak slowed his fall, creating what is thought to be the first parachute, and leaving him with only minor injuries. In 875, aged 70, having perfected a machine of silk and eagles' feathers he tried again, jumping from a mountain. He flew to a significant height and stayed aloft for ten minutes but crashed on landing - concluding, correctly, that it was because he had not given his device a tail so it would stall on landing. Baghdad international airport and a crater on the Moon are named after him.5 Washing and bathing are religious requirements for Muslims, which is perhaps why they perfected the recipe for soap which we still use today. The ancient Egyptians had soap of a kind, as did the Romans who used it more as a pomade. But it was the Arabs who combined vegetable oils with sodium hydroxide and aromatics such as thyme oil. One of the Crusaders' most striking characteristics, to Arab
nostrils, was that they did not wash. Shampoo was introduced to England by a Muslim who opened Mahomed's Indian Vapour Baths on Brighton seafront in 1759 and was appointed Shampooing Surgeon to Kings George IV and William IV.6 Distillation, the means of separating liquids through differences in their boiling points, was invented around the year 800 by Islam's foremost scientist, Jabir ibn Hayyan, who transformed alchemy into chemistry, inventing many of the basic processes and apparatus still in use today - liquefaction, crystallisation, distillation, purification, oxidisation, evaporation and filtration. As well as discovering sulphuric and nitric acid, he invented the alembic still, giving the world intense rosewater and other perfumes and alcoholic spirits (although drinking them is haram, or forbidden, in Islam). Ibn Hayyan emphasised systematic experimentation and was the founder of modern
 chemistry.7 The crank-shaft is a device which translates rotary into linear motion and is central to much of the machinery in the modern world, not least the internal combustion engine. One of the most important mechanical inventions in the history of humankind, it was created by an ingenious Muslim engineer called al-Jazari to raise water for irrigation. His 1206 Book of Knowledge of Ingenious Mechanical Devices shows he also invented or refined the use of valves and pistons, devised some of the first mechanical clocks driven by water and weights, and was the father of robotics. Truly, your Lord knows best who has gone astray from His Path, and He is the Best Aware of those who are guided.}
(Holy Quran-16:125)

{And who is better in speech than he who [says: My Lord is Allah (believes in His Oneness), and then stands straight (acts upon His Order), and] invites (men) to Allah's (Islamic Monotheism), and does righteous deeds, and says: I am one of the Muslims.} (Holy Quran-41:33)

The prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: By Allah, if Allah guides one person by you, it is better for you than the best types of camels. [al-Bukhaaree, Muslim]

The prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) also said, Whoever calls to guidance will have a reward similar to the reward of the one who follows him, without the reward of either of them being lessened at all.
[Muslim, Ahmad, Aboo Daawood, an-Nasaa'ee, at-Tirmidhee, Ibn Maajah]
