Every good action or deed should be started with reciting Bismillah .



Said O chief! Surely an honorable letter has been delivered to me Surely it is from Sulaiman, and surely it is in the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful;

In this section we will quote some Authentic Traditions of the Prophet Muhammad (saw) regarding Bismillah - In the name of Allah. 




Saying Bismillah Is Recommended Before Eating: 

The Prophet (saw) said, 

Say Bismillah, eat with your right hand and eat what is in front of you. 

[Bukhari 7/88, Muslim 2/207, Ahmad 17/92, Muwatta Malik 10/32 and Ibn Majah 1/557] 



Saying Bismillah Is Recommended When Drinking Water: 

Ibn Abbas (ra) reported that the Messenger of Allah (saw) said,

Do not drink in one gulp like a camel, but in two or three [Gulps]. Mention the Name of Allah when you start drinking and praise Him after you have finished Drinking.'' 


[Fath al-Bari 12/197 and Al-Trimidhi] 



Saying Bismillah Is Recommended At The Beginning Of Ablution: 

The Prophet (saw) said, 

Make Wudu [Ablution] in the name of Allah 

[An-Nasai 1/11 and Ibn Khuzaimah 1/84] 



Saying Bismillah Is Recommended When Entering The House: 

Jabir (ra) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (saw) saying, 

If a person mentions the Name of Allah upon entering his house or eating, Satan says, addressing his followers: `You will find no where to spend the night and no dinner.' But if he enters without mentioning the Name of Allah, Satan says [To his followers]; `You have found [A place] to spend the night in, and if he does not mention the Name of Allah at the time of eating, Satan says: `You have found [A place] to spend the night in as well as food. 


[Sahih Muslim 2/206] 



Saying Bismillah Is Recommended When Leaving The House: 

The Messenger Of Allah (saw) said, 

If anyone of you when leaving the house says In the name of Allah, I trust in Allah, there is no power and might except from Allah. Your needs shall be fulfilled, you shall be saved from difficulties and hardships. Shaitaan hearing these words leaves him.

Say Bismillah At The Time When Slaughtering An Animal: 

Anas (ra) reported that the Messenger (saw) of Allah sacrificed two horned rams of white color with black markings over them. He also stated: I saw him sacrificing them with his own hand and saw him placing his foot on their sides, and recited in the name of Allah and Glorified Him [Bismillah Allaahu Akbar]

Saying Bismillah Is Recommended When Fighting For The Cause Of Allah: 

The Messenger of Allah (saw) said, 

Fight in the name of Allah and in the way of Allah 

[Sahih Muslim 2/69] 



Saying Bismillah Is Recommended Before Entering The Toilet: 

The Prophet Of Allah (saw) said 

When you enter the toilet you should say, In the Name of Allah, I seek protection in you from unclean spirits, male and female. 


[Abu Dawud 4/264, Ahmad 2/389 and Fath Al-Bari 1/254] 



Saying Bismillah Is Recommended Because It Causes Humiliation To The Shaitaan: 

Abul Malih said: I was riding on a mount behind the Prophet (saw). It stumbled. Thereupon I said: May the devil perish! He said: Do not say: May the devil perish! For if you say that, he will swell so much so that he will be like a house, and say: By my power. 


But say Bismillah for when you say that, he will diminish so much so that he will be like a fly.

Saying Bismillah Is Recommended When Night Falls: 

Allah's Apostle (saw) said, When night falls stop your children from going out, for the devils spread out at that time. But when an hour of the night has passed, release them and close the doors and mention Allah's Name, for Satan does not open a closed door. 


Tie the mouth of your water-skin and mention Allah's Name; cover your containers and utensils and mention Allah's Name. Cover them even by placing something across it, and extinguish your lamps.

Saying Bismillah Is Recommended When Placing The Body Of The Deceased In The Grave: 

The Prophet of Allah (saw) said, When you are lowering the deceased in the grave you should say In the name of Allah and in accordance to the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah.

The Virtue Of Saying Bismillah: 

Uthman bin Abu al-As Al-Thaqafi reported that he made a complaint of pain to Allah's Messenger (saw) that he felt in his body at the time he had become Muslim. Thereupon Allah's Messenger (saw) said: Place your hand at the place where you feel pain in your body and say in the name of Allah three times and seven times I seek refuge with


Allah and with His Power from the evil that I find and that I fear.

Fort Meade - An army dog handler charged with abusing detainees at Abu
Ghraib Prison in Iraq said he was competing with another canine team
to frighten the prisoners into soiling themselves, a soldier testified
at a court-martial on Tuesday.

The testimony on the second day of the trial was the most-damaging
evidence the government had presented against sergeant Michael J Smith.

Human-rights advocates say the trial could help clarify who approved
the harsh treatment that they say amounted to torture.

Defence attorneys in other Abu Ghraib cases have argued that the
approvals reached to the Pentagon.

Sergeant John H Ketzer, who had worked as an interrogator at the
prison in Iraq, testified that he followed the sounds of screaming to
a cell where Smith's black Belgian shepherd was straining against its
leash and barking at two cowering, teenage male detainees in a part of
the prison reserved for juveniles and women.

'Rogue policemen'

Ketzer said Smith laughed as he told Ketzer shortly thereafter: My
buddy and I are having a contest to see if we can get them to
(defecate on) themselves because we've already had some (urinate on)
themselves.

Under cross-examination, Ketzer said he had thought Smith was just
joking about the contest.

Ketzer's testimony came a day after prosecutor Matthew Miller told
jurors in his opening statement that Smith and another dog handler,
sergeant Santos A Cardona, were rogue military policemen.

We contend that there is no soldier who would honestly and reasonably
believe that this conduct was lawful and authorised, Miller said Monday.

Smith, 24, of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, is accused of using his dog to
harass, threaten and assault detainees in late 2003 and early 2004 -
the same period during which guards at Abu Ghraib subjected inmates to
sexual humiliation and other abuses documented in widely-seen

Unmuzzled dog

Cardona's trial is set for May 22.

Prosecutors presented as evidence on Monday a series of photographs
showing Smith restraining an unmuzzled dog that appeared to be
snarling at al-Qaeda suspect Ashraf Abdullah Al-Juhayshi.

The nine American soldiers convicted so far in the Abu Ghraib scandal
have all been low-ranking reservists.

the end of a meeting in Gaza to agree on a common programme for a Palestinian 
government. A Fatah representative in the dialogue said yesterday - the fourth 
day of inconclusive coalition talks in Gaza - that the gap with Hamas's position 
was still big. He said that all the presentations and amendments in the revised 
Hamas offer did not meet the minimum demands of Fatah for joining a Hamas-led 
government. The dialogue is set to end by the weekend and then Hamas would 
announce its government. Palestinian officials said Fatah and Hamas were trying 
to find common ground and avoid tensions that could result in political 
paralysis or even violence, but that a confrontation was 
inevitable.

Chief judge closes Saddam testimony to 
publicSaddam Hussein testified on Wednesday for the 
first time at his trial, calling on Iraqis to stop a bloody wave of sectarian 
violence and instead fight American troops, prompting the chief judge to close 
the courtroom, saying he was making political speeches. Even as the judge 
repeatedly yelled at him to stop, Saddam read from a prepared text, insisting he 
was still Iraqs president. "Let the (Iraqi) people unite and resist the 
invaders and their backers. Dont fight among yourselves," he said, praising the 
insurgency. " Finally chief judge Raouf Abdel-Rahman ordered the session to 
continue in secret, telling journalists to leave the chamber. The video and 
audio broadcast of the trial was cut

UN creates new rights councilThe United 
Nations General Assembly has created a new UN human rights body, despite 
objections from the United States. Sustained applause greeted the announcement 
of the 170 to 4 vote with 3 abstentions. Joining the United States in a "no" 
vote were Israel, Marshall Islands and Palau. Abstaining were: Belarus, Iran and 
Venezuela. The new 47-seat UN Human Rights Council would replace the 53-country 
Geneva-based UN Human Rights Commission. Members in the new council will be 
elected by secret ballot in the General Assembly by a majority vote of all 
members, not just those present and 
voting.

Four Iraqis killed, suspect detained in US Al Qaeda 
raidFour Iraqis were killed, including two women and a 
child, in a US military operation yesterday against 'suspected al Qaeda members' 
north of Baghdad. US forces raided a house 80 kilometers north of Baghdad, near 
the town of Balad, searching for a suspected facilitator for al Qaeda in the 
area. The US military claimed it 'came under fire' and killed the women and 
child in 'self-defense'. Local officials in the area reported a much higher 
casualty 
toll.

Libya and France sign nuclear dealLibya 
and France have signed a co-operation agreement on the peaceful use of nuclear 
energy, the first deal of its kind since Libya abandoned its efforts to build 
weapons of mass destruction in 2003. "This accord represents a qualitative leap 
in relations between the two countries and proves that Libya has transformed its 
weapons of mass destruction into constructive weapons," the Libyan public works 
minister said at Wednesday's signing ceremony in Tripoli. The Libyan government

Saddams feared half-brother takes stand in

Lahore International Book Fair 2006 (Hussain Kaisrani)


I am pleased to report that the Lahore International
Book Fair 2006 concluded succesfully on Tuesday, March
07th, 2006 . It recevied a huge response from the
people of Lahore. 

A large number of people from various walks of life,
especially students, visited the Expo Centre to
explore the world of books. A large collection of
books published by local and international publishers
were displayed in approximately 250 stalls. The
success of the fair can be measured from the fact that
publishers have already begun inquiring about booking
stalls for the next year's fair. Tolu-e-Islam is one
of them.

The response on Tolu-e-Islam Trust stall was
fantastic. People from all walks of life, research
scholars and students visited the stall in great
numbers.  It was very encouraging.  They bought
pamphlets, CDs and Books published by Tolu-e-Islam
Trust. More than 200 people registered for annual
subscription to the Monthly Tolu-e-Islam Magazine.
Unfortunately, due to the limited size of the stall,
and the fact that a lot of visitors came,  it was not
possible to deal with the demand properly. 
Nevertheless it was clear that the people like to read
and know about Allama Parwez and his mission.

It was suggested to the Lahore International Book Fair
organizing committee that such fairs should be
organised frequently to encourage reading in the
Pakistani society.  

We were able to participate for the first time ever in
the history of Tolu-e-Islam in this kind of mega
event.  This was due to timely decisions by the
Executive Head TI Trust Prof. Dr. Zahida Durrani
Sahiba, encouragement of Bashir Abid Sahib, monetary
assistance by Bazm Kuwait and full support and
guidance of Ubed Arain Sahib. Rashid Ali Sahib from
Qatar, as always, gave nice and practical ideas and
suggestions enabling us to take full advantage of the
Fair.

Tolu-e-Islam Trust would, inshallah, set up a stall
next year too and hopefuly we will better prepare
ourselves.

Copenhagen - Denmark's top prosecutor said on Wednesday he won't press
charges against the newspaper that first published the Prophet
Muhammad cartoons that angered Muslims worldwide.

Director of public prosecutions Henning Fode upheld the decision of a
regional prosecutor who ruled the drawings published in
Jyllands-Posten did not violate Danish law.

Fode's decision cannot be appealed.

Men charged for cartoon protest

London - Three men are due to appear in court charged with alleged
offences linked to a protest in London against European newspaper
cartoons caricaturing the Prophet Muhammad, police said on Wednesday.

They were among five suspects arrested earlier in the day. The two
other men, aged 39 and 23, have been given bail and must return to a
central London police station on April 19 pending further
investigations, a police spokesman said.

One of the men charged, Uman Javed, is accused of soliciting murder
and using words likely to stir up racial hatred.

The 26-year-old from Washwood Heath Road, Birmingham, West Midlands,
was remanded in custody to appear at Bow Street Magistrates' Court on
Thursday.

Abdul Rahman Saleem, 31, of Mellish Street, east London, has also been
charged with using words likely to stir up racial hatred.

Finally, Omar Zaheer, 26, of Derwent Road, Southall, west London, has
been charged with racially aggravated disorderly behaviour and
disorderly behaviour.

Both Saleem and Zaheer were bailed to appear at Bow Street
magistrates' court on March 31.

The charges followed a police investigation into a protest on February
3 outside the Danish embassy in London where placards were brandished
with messages calling for the massacre of those who insult Islam.

The cartoons, including one with the prophet dressed as a suicide
bomber, were first published in a Danish newspaper last year before
reappearing in other European newspapers.

Prosecutors Seek to Revive Moussaoui Case

ALEXANDRIA, Va. - Fighting for a death penalty in a 9/11 case,
prosecutors are beseeching a federal judge to reconsider her decision
to exclude half the government's case against confessed al-Qaida
conspirator Zacarias Moussaoui.




They
acknowledge their only hope of obtaining the death penalty for the
37-year-old Frenchman of Moroccan descent is to persuade U.S. District
Judge Leonie Brinkema she punished the government too harshly for
tampering with trial witnesses and lying to defense
attorneys.
Brinkema did not immediately respond to the motion for
reconsideration that prosecutors filed Wednesday evening. But she had
indicated earlier she had time available Thursday to hear such a motion
if it were filed.
The jury has been sent home until Monday to give prosecutors time
for their next step.
Brinkema barred prosecutors from submitting any witnesses or
exhibits about aviation security. Prosecutors responded in their motion
that this evidence "goes to the very core of our theory of the case."
At the very least, the prosecutors argued, they should be allowed to
present a newly designated aviation security witness who had no contact
with Carla J. Martin, the Transportation Security Administration lawyer
responsible for the government's misconduct. This would "allow us to
present our complete theory of the case, albeit in imperfect form."
"The public has a strong interest in seeing and hearing it (aviation
security evidence), and the court should not eliminate it from the
case, particularly not ... where other remedies are available," they
wrote Brinkema.
Brinkema ruled Tuesday that Martin violated federal rules
when she
sent trial transcripts to seven aviation witnesses, coached them on how
to deflect defense attacks and lied to defense lawyers to prevent them
from interviewing witnesses they wanted to call. The judge said
Martin's actions and other government missteps had left the aviation
evidence "irremediably contaminated."
The only person charged in this country in the Sept. 11, 2001,
attacks, Moussaoui pleaded guilty in April to conspiring with al-Qaida
to fly airplanes into U.S. buildings. But he denies any involvement in
9/11, saying he was training for a possible future attack.
This trial is to decide whether he is executed or spends life behind
bars.
Prosecutors said the excluded evidence "is one of the two essential
and interconnected components of our case."
The prosecution's case is based on offensive and defensive measures
they argue the government would have taken if Moussaoui had not lied
to FBI
agents about his terrorist connections when arrested in Minnesota three
weeks before al-Qaida flew jetliners into New York's World Trade
Center, the Pentagon and a
Pennsylvania field on 9/11.
They say offensive steps by the FBI to locate 9/11 hijackers in
advance and defensive airport security measures by federal aviation
officials would have combined to prevent at least one death that day.
To get a death penalty, prosecutors must show beyond a reasonable doubt
that an action of Moussaoui's  his lies, in this case  led directly
to at least one 9/11 death.
As a compromise, prosecutors offered to drop arguments that the Federal
Aviation Administration
would have barred small knives, like those used by the hijackers, from
planes and would have altered its terrorist screening profiles to catch
the attackers.
Instead, they would call one witness, whom they did not identify,
who worked at the FAA in August 2001 and could discuss the government's
use of "no-fly" lists to bar named terrorists from planes and how those
lists evolved. They said Martin had no contact with this witness.
"We don't know whether it is worth us proceeding at all, candidly,
under the ruling you made today," Assistant U.S. Attorney Rob Spencer
said in an unusually blunt assessment during a conference call Tuesday.
Spencer added that continuing under these conditions would "waste the
jury's time and the court's time, and we're all mindful of the expense
of this proceeding."
If Brinkema refuses to budge, it's not clear what appeals remain
open. Defense attorney Edward MacMahon said the government can't appeal
Brinkema's ruling to the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond
now that the trial is under way.
Carl Tobias, a law professor at the University of Richmond, said
prosecutors might ask the appeals court for a rarely used common law
relief order

Three main faiths on earth: Judaism, preached by Moses (Peace be upon him); Christianity, preached by Jesus (Peace be upon him); Islaam, preached by Muhammad (SAW)---all believers in ONE GOD.

The non-believers or the followers of other religions fail to understand the symphony of FAITH that give rise to conflicts and wars in our world.

To them one thing is understandable that we all are crazy about converting people to our own denominations as much as possible. But this does not get across to them that why we are divided into different segregations in spite of believing in Monotheism.

So this is short and precise attempt to explain the beliefs and the conflicts prevalent among the People of the Book: Jews, Christians and Muslims.

The Jews/Yahood are usually known as the Children of Israel. Israel: who is Biblically known as Jacob/Yaqub. Jacob was the grandson of Abraham/Ibrahim through his younger son Isaac/ Ishaq.
The Jews, followers of Judaism, believe in Pentateuch/Torah, popularly known as Bibles Old Testament: the Book originally revealed in Hebrew- the native language of Moses (Peace be upon him).
Biblically, Moses (Peace be upon him) line of ancestry goes as: Moses (Peace be upon him) son of Amram, son of Kohath, son of Levi, son of Jacob, son of Isaac, son of Abraham.

The worship of Yahweh, the god of the tribe of Judah (hence the name Judaism), which had played a leading role in the emergence of the ancient Jewish state in the beginning of the 10th Century BC and which provided the dynasty of the Jews first Kings turned into the single state religion, which later developed as the cult of a single god, ruler of the world. In Judaism, there appeared at a very early stage, the idea that the people of Israel were Gods chosen people.
The rabbis (teachers of the Law) completed the compilation of the written source of Judaic beliefs, second in importance to the Bible- the Talmud (3rd to 5th centuries AD).
Judaic religious leaders enjoy the strongest influence of all in Israel. In the USSR Judaism is to be found mainly in an orthodox form.
Zionism (derived from the name for Mount Zion in the outskirts of Jerusalem), ideology, policy and system for the organizations of the powerful Jewish middle class, which became closely allied with business and political circles in the West, particularly in the United States. The Zionist Movement has an openly anti-Communist and anti-Soviet thrust. Zionism came to link an appeal for the exodus of Jews from the countries, where they were actually living, with the idea of national unification within their own state. Using Judaism to further its own ends, Zionism still possesses undeniable political overtones. The links between Zionism and Judaism assumed definitive shape back in the 1930s.The reactionary

The Christians/Nasara, followers of Christ/ Messiah known as Jesus/Isa (Peace be upon him) are the most popular religion in our world. Moses (Peace be upon him) had prophesied Jesus (Peace be upon him) coming in the Torah; but when Jesus (Peace be upon him) came, it were the Jews themselves who took his life at the Cross according to the religious beliefs of the Christians.
The Book revealed upon Jesus (Peace be upon him) was called the Gospel / Injeel, originally in Aramaic, the language that Jesus (Peace be upon him) spoke.
Only after Jesus (Peace be upon him) had gone that people realized- he was the destined Messiah. During his lifetime only a few believed in him-known as the Twelve Disciples.
It was St. Paul (not included in the Twelve Disciples) Greek by birth, who brought a revolution in the spread of Christianity in those days. The mythical concepts of Greeks got mixed to the original Christianity preached by Jesus (Peace be upon him), such as: the idea of Trinity (Father is God, Son is God and Holy Spirit is God) was introduced into Christianity by him.
In the 4th century AD, Athanasian and Nicene Creed fixed four versions of Gospels as authentic, recognized today as the New Testament Bible, from about 270 different versions of the Gospels which were burnt off.
The Christians we see today believe that there is nothing wrong in worshipping Jesus (Peace be upon him). Rather, they make it a point that only those who worship Jesus (Peace be upon him) will go to heaven.

The tribe of Saad ibn Bakr sent a man named Dimam ibn Thalabah to
Medina. He was a tough man with thick hair in which he wore two
plaits. He made his camel kneel down at the door of the mosque and
hobbled it. Then he entered upon the Prophet Muhammad, upon whom be
peace, who was sitting with his companions.

He asked, `Which of you is the son of Abd al Mutallib?' The Prophet
said, `I am the son of Abd al Mutallib'

Dimam asked, `Muhammad?' The Prophet said, `Yes'

Dimam then said, `Muhammad, I am going to ask you some very frank
questions but do not get angry because I am not angry with you' To
which the Prophet replied, `Ask whatever you want'

Dimam asked, `I adjure you by God, has God sent you to us as a
Messenger?' He replied, `Allahumma, yes'

Dimam asked, `I adjure you by God, has God commanded you that we
should worship God and not associate anything with God; and that we
shold renounce the idols and rivals which our fathers worshipped?' He
replied, `Allahumma, yes'

Then Dimam began to mention the compulsory duties of Islam one by one,
adjuring the Prophet by God each time. When he had finished, he said,
`I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that you are God's
Messenger. I will perform all of these duties and refrain from what
you have forbidden me: no more and no less will I do.' Then he left.

The Prophet then said to his companions, `If he does as he says he
will enter paradise.'

Dimam returned to his people, the tribe of Saad ibn Bakr and they
gathered around him. He denounced Laat and Uzza (two of their pagan
idols) before them. They said, `O Dimam! Beware of leprosy and
madness' To which Dimam said, `Woe to you! by God, these two idols can
neither cause harm or bring benefit. God has sent to you a Messenger
and has revealed a Book by which to rescue you from t he state you
were in. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that
Muhammad is God's servant and messenger. I have come to you form him,
with what he has ordered you to do and forbidden you to do.'

By Allah, by the time evening had come, everyone who was present, both
men and women, had embraced Islam.

The account above shows two seperate points. The first is the
realisation by Dimam that much of what has been taught to him from a
young age, the belief in pagan gods, was not truth. But the second, is
a reflection that when the simplicity of truth is presented in the
face of falsehood with people being given the option to think,
falsehood always fails.

May Allah Almighty have mercy and help us find the truth in all that
we do, ameen.

  worldwide protests against the US occupation of Iraq, tens of thousands of 
  people are planning to take to the streets of London Saturday, March 18, 
  to denounce the US occupation on the third anniversary of the downfall of 
  the Arab country.
  "Our demonstration on Saturday is one of over 200 
  taking place in cities and towns all over the world, including in Basra 
  and Baghdad in Iraq," Lindsey German, Convener of Stop the War Coalition, 
  said in a press release e-mailed to IslamOnline.net Friday, March 
  17.
  Acting without a UN mandate, US-led forces invaded 
  oil-rich Iraq in March 2003, under the pretext of imminent threat posed by 
  the countrys alleged weapons of mass destruction, none of which was ever 
  found.
  Saturday's march will set off along Victoria Street 
  passing the Attorney General's office on its way to Piccadilly and 
  Trafalgar Square.
  "We will all be united in our call for the occupation 
  to end immediately," German said.
  A cohort of world dignitaries will address the 
  marchers on the third anniversary of the US-led invasion.
  Mayor of London Ken Livingstone, former UK ambassador 
  to Uzbekistan Craig Murray and British lawmaker George Galloway are but a 
  few of prominent speakers at the march.
  Speakers will also include officials from the Muslim 
  Association of Britain, the Islamic Iraqi party and Stop the War 
  Coalition.
  "We believe that a peaceful solution to the chaos 
  caused by the illegal war in Iraq will only be possible when the occupying 
  foreign armies have all been removed so that the Iraqi people will be free 
  to decide on their own political future," German added.
  The Trafalgar Square demonstration is organized by 
  Stop the War Coalition in conjunction with the Muslim Association of 
  Britain and Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND).

For more than a decade Muslim women
activists in India have been demanding a ban on what is known as triple
talaq or instant divorce. It is a system wherein a Muslim man can divorce his
wife in a matter of minutes. The issue has
been highlighted recently after several Indian Muslims have taken to divorcing
their wives by mail, over the phone and even through mobile phone text messages.
The practice of instant divorce is banned in several Islamic countries including
Pakistan, Bangladesh, Malaysia
and Indonesia. But it continues in
India.

'Life ruined'

Jahanara's house lies off a narrow lane in Old
Delhi. Narrow steps, barely a foot wide, take you up to the first floor where
she sits huddled in a corner of her tiny two-room home, mourning. Jahanara's
parents got her married when she was 15. Now, two years later, she is back with
them because her husband has divorced her. Saying that he was setting her free
he repeated the words Talaq (divorce) three times and left. My life's ruined.
What can I do with myself now? I had hoped to spend the rest of my life with him
and look what he did to me, she says. I gave up everything to go with him - I
thought we'd be together through thick and thin, but he clearly had other
ideas. Jahanara is a victim of what is known as the triple talaq, where a
husband exercises his right to divorce his wife within a matter of minutes.

Islamic scholars say the Koran clearly spells
out how to issue a divorce. It has to be spread over three months which allows a
couple time for reconciliation. But today, many men use the post, the telephone
or even the short messaging service (sms) to divorce their wives.

Instant divorce

her husband, Akram, calls. She has been married for 20 years and has four grown
up children. In January this year, Akram threw her out of their house and got
married again a month later. Rehana now lives in constant fear. He might say
'talaq' on the phone to me, she says. I don't answer my phone when I see his
number. I want to spend the remaining years of my life as his wife. I don't want
a divorce.

Muslim women's rights activists are outraged
by such incidents. There's nothing
in the Koran that allows triple, verbal, instantaneous talaq. There's no greater
anathema than the kind of talaq that has now become the greatest black mark
against gender in Islam, says Sayeeda Hamid.

Raising awareness

There have been attempts in the past to
focus on the ills of instant divorce. The clamour to ban the practice has forced
the All India Muslim Personal Law Board to take up the matter at a
recent meeting. A spokesman, Syed Qasim Rasool Ilyas, says the board does not
have the authority to ban the practice. The majority of the ulema [clergy]
thinks that it's legal, it's binding. They say it's according to the Sharia
[Islamic code]. Now how can the Muslim Personal Law Board take a unilateral
decision? The board cannot go against the Shariat. But, he says, there's a
consensus among the board that it's a sin and we'll try to discourage it.

To spread the word, mosques have been roped
in. During Friday prayers at a Delhi mosque, more than 1,000 men, young and old, kneel on the
floor, listening to Maulana Jalaluddin Umri's sermon. He devotes two-thirds of
the 45-minute-long prayer to talk about the issue. And it appears to have made
an impact on the congregation. Naseemuddin says the clergy should find a way to
ban the practice. If you're Muslim, you have to follow the Koran. We have to
face the reality and tackle it constructively, he says. Majid Akhtar Siddiqui,
a mechanical engineer, says society must be flexible. I have seen real
experiences in life, where sometimes problems arise between couples. Now, we
have to sort out these problems, not create more problems.

But Sayeeda Hamid thinks an awareness campaign
is not enough. The first thing that should be done is that they should
completely, totally ban triple, verbal, instantaneous talaq. They should simply
say it's cancelled, it cannot happen. So the men cannot treat their marriage as
something that can be trifled with.

That's little consolation for women like
Jahanara and Rehana. For them the Muslim Personal Law Board's awareness campaign
is too little too late.

TAQIYAH MEANS HYPROCRISY, OR RESERVATION IN SPEECH,
THE WORDS SPOKEN BEING DIAMETRICALLY OPPOSED TO THE
IDEAS AND PRECEPTS OF THE SPEAKER. THIS IS JUST TO
BEGUILE THE OPPONENTS OR TO SAVE ONSELF FROM AWKWARD
OR CIRITCAL POSITIONS. IMAM JA'FER IS ALLEGED TO HAVE
SAID THAT TAQIYYAH IS 9 OF 10 PARTS OF THE RELIGION
(USUL-E-KAFEE, P. 482). THE SHI'ITES SAY THAT HAZRAT
ALI (RA) ACCEPTED THE FIRST THREE CALIPHS AND OWED
ALLEGIANCE TO THEM JUST BY WAY OF TAQIYYAH, OTHERWISE
IN HIS HEART OF HEARTS HE WAS DEADLY AGAINST THESE
USURPERS OF HIS RIGHTFUL CLAIM TO CALIPHATE.

THE FACT IS THAT HADHRAT ALI HAD GREAT RESPECT AND
REVERENCE FOR HADHRAT ABU BAKR. HADHRAT UMAR AND
HADHRAT USMAN (RA). HE SINCERELY AND WILLINGLY TOOK
THE OATH OF ALLEGIANCE (BAY'T) ON THE HANDS OF THE
FIRST THREE KHULFA-E-RASHIDDEN. THIS IS ESTABLISHED
FROM A CHAIN OF UN-INTERRUPTED NARRATIONS. TO DENY
THIS OF COURSE IS LIKE DENYING THE GUIDANCE ITSELF!

ALLAMA IBN AA'SEER HAS REPORTED A SAYING OF HADHRAT
ALI (RA) TOWARDS THE EXCELLENCE OF SHAIKHEEN (I.E.
HADHRAT ABY BAKR AND HADHRAT UMAR) :

ALMIGHTY ALLAH HAS MADE ABU BAKR  UMAR AS
AUTHORITATIVE PRECEDENT ( ) FOR ALL TILL THE DOOMSDAY.
BY ALLAH THESE TWO HAVE TAKEN A GREAT EDGE OVER THE
OTHERS AND HAVE CAUSED THE LATTER (PEOPLE) IN GREAT
HARDSHIP IN THE MATTER OF FOLLOWING SUNNAH AND
SHARI'AH ( VOL.IV, p. 68, PUBLISHED FROM TEHRAN 1386 H
ED.)

HADHRAT ALI (RA) SAID : NONE BUT A PIOUS MUSLIM LOVES
ABU BAKR AND UMAR (RA) AND NONE BUT A VILE AND A
WRETCHED ONE HATES THEM.  (TALBEES-E-IBLESS). HE IS
ALSO REPORTED TO HAVE SAID: MAY ALLAH CURSE THOSE WHO
ENTERTAIN ANYTHING OTHER THAN GOODNESS FOR ABU BAKR
AND UMAR (RADHILLAHU ANUHUMAA). ABU BAKR AND UMAR ARE
THE BROTHERS, THE COMPANIONS AND THE MINISTERS OF
RASUL-ALLAH (SAW). (TALBESS-E-IBLESS).

IT IS STATED IN MASNED AHMAD THAT IMAM ZAIN-UL-ABIDEEN
(I.E. 4TH IMAM ACCORDING TO SHIAS) WAS ASKED ABOUT THE
STATUS OF HADHRAT ABU BAKR AND HADHRT UMAR IN THE
ESTIMATION OF RASUL ALLAH (SAW). HE REPILED: DURING
THEIR LIFETIME THEY ENJOYED THE SAME STATUS AND
NEARNESS TO RASUL-ALLAH (SAW) WHICH THEY ARE HAVING
NOW AFTER THEIR DEATH (I.E. THEY STAND BURIED VERY
CLOSE TO THE PROPHET UNDER THE SAME ROOF). AND WHAT
COULD BE GREATER EXCELLENCE IN THE ENTIRE UMMAH THAN
THIS THAT AFTER THE DEMISE OF RASUL-ALLAH (SAW) THEY
HAD THE GOOD FORTUNE OF SUCCEEDING HIM AND SERVING IN
HIS PULPIT AND PRAYER-NICHE ( ). EVEN AFTER THEIR
DEATH, THEY OCCUPY SUCH A PLACE OF (HONOUR) IN THE
TOMB OF RASUL-ALLAH (SAW). WHICH IS EVEN MORE EXALTED
THAN ARSH AND THE THRONE.

DURING THE LAST DAYS OF THE REIGN OF HADHRAT USMAN
(RA) WHEN SHIAS LEVELLED FALSE CHARGE AGAINST HIM THAT
HE HAD BURNT ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT OF THE QUR'AN,
HADHRAT ALI REBUKED THEM AND SAID : THIS IS A FALSE
ALLEGATION. HADHRAT USMAN HAS ONLY BURNT THAT COPY
WHICH HAS DISPUTED (IN REGARD TO PRONOUNCIATION AND
MODE OF WRITING ETC.) AND HAS PRESERVED THE ORIGINAL
TEXT WHICH HAS BEEN AGREED UPON AND ESTABLISHED FROM
RASUL-ALLAH (SAW) BY ALLAH! IF I WOULD HAVE BEEN IN
PLACE OF USMAN, I WOULD HAVE DONE WHAT HE HAS DONE. (
VOL-VII p. 171).

AT ANOTHER OCCASION HADHRAT ALI SAID : HADHRAT USMAN
IS ABOVE ALL US ; HE IS MOST GENTLE, POLITE,
GOD-FEARING AND RIGHTEOUS.

SOME PEOPLE SAY THAT HADHRAT ALI (RA) USED TO ACCURSE
MUAIWYA AFTER EVERY PRAYER, BUT THE FACT IS WHAT TO
SAY OF CURSING HIM, HADHRAT ALI EVEN DID NOT LIKE THAT
ANYBODY SHOULD SPEAK ILL OF MUIWAYA IN HIS PRESENCE.
SIMILARLY WHEN SAYYEDNA MUIWAYA CAME TO KNOW THAT
TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THE INTERNAL RIFT AND STRIFE AMONG
MUSLIMS (ARISEN ON ACCOUNT OF AVENGING THE MURDER OF
THE INNOCENT MARTYR CALIPH USMAN) THE ROMAN EMPEROR
WANTS TO INVADE SOME OF THE MUSLIM LANDS, HE WROTE TO
HIM; I WARN YOU THAT IF YOU DARED TO UNDERTAKE SUCH A
VILE VENTURE, I WILL BE FIRST SOLDIER IN THE ARMY OF
ALI TO MARCH AND FIGHT AGAINST YOU.

EHSAN ELAHI ZAHEER IN HIS BOOK THE SHIITES AND THE
SUNNAH (AVAILABLE FREE OF CHARGE FROM MAKTABA DAWAH,
58-ABU BAKR BLOCK, NEW GARDEN TOWN, LAHORE, PAKISTAN)
SAYS THAT SHIAISM IS AN OFFSPRING OF LIES AND THE SHIA
GAVE IT THE COLOUR OF REVERENCE AND ESTEEM. THEY
CALLED IT WITHOUT ANY NAME. THEY USED THE WORD TAQIYA
FOR IT, AND INTENDED TO EXPRESS SOMETHING CONTRARY IN
WHAT IS IN THEIR MIND, AND TO DEMONSTRATE SOMETHING
QUITE OPPOSITE TO WHAT THEY CONCEAL IN THEIR HEARTS.

KULAINI, ONE OF THEIR FAMOUS SCHOLAR SYAS: TAQIYA IS
MY RELIGION, AND IS THE RELIGION OF MY FOREFATHERS. HE
WHO DOES NOT PRACTIES YAQIYA IS NOT A TRUE BELIEVER.
THIS HAS BEEN DELCARED BY ABU JAFFAR, THE FIFTH IMAM
ACCORDING TO THEIR RECKONING. (AL-KAFI, IRAN EDITION
2. 219).

KULAINI ALSO RELATES: NINE-TENTHS OF THE RELIGION IS
IN TAQIYA. HE WHO DOES NOT PRACTICE YAQIYA IS NOT A
TRUE BELIEVER. (IBID).

THE GREAT SHIA MUHADDITH, MUHAMMAD (IBN ALI IBN
AL-HUSSAIN IBN BAHAWAIHI AL-QUMMI IN HIS TREATISE
ENTITLED AL-ITIQADAT SAYS: TAQIYA IS INCUMBENT (ON
THE SHIA). IT IS NOT ALLOWED TO DISREGARD IT,
