Hamas to Govern Alone, Open to Peace With Israel Al-Zahar was expected to be appointed foreign minister in the new Palestinian cabinet. (Reuters) GAZA, March 17, 2006 (IslamOnline.net News Agencies) It became almost certain Friday, March 17, that the Islamic resistance group Hamas would rule alone after Fatah declared its rejection to join a national unity government with Hamas planning to finalize its cabinet Saturday, as its PM-designate reiterated the group's hope to reach peace with Israel. "The government will be ready tomorrow with its formation and its ministers but we will not announce the government before we hand it over to the president," Reuters quoted Hamas spokesman Salah Al-Bardaweel as saying. Bardaweel said "only some independents and a Christian will be joining the new cabinet", according to Agence FrancePresse (AFP). "Foreign affairs, interior, finance and education portfolios will all go to Hamas," another party official told AFP, on condition of anonymity. Hamas sources said Mahmoud Al-Zahar was expected to be appointed foreign minister. Another Hamas leader, Saeed Seyam, will reportedly become interior minister, giving him control over three Palestinian security agencies, the sources added. Hamas is expected to submit the list of cabinet members to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas when he visits Gaza for talks Saturday, March 17. The resistance group, which swept the January Palestinian elections, has failed to agree with other Palestinian factions on forming a national unity government. The Fatah group said the movement's ruling Central Committee decided late Thursday, March 16, not to join a Hamas-led government. Western diplomatic sources said Monday, March 13, that the Bush administration had warned the Palestinian Fatah movement and other parties of strict restrictions on contacts and assistance if they joined a Hamas-led government. Khalil Abu Lila, member of Hamass politburo, told IOL that a new government of technocrats was ready and only waited the go-ahead from the Palestinian President to announce it if other Palestinian parties remain adamant to join a coalition government. Ready for Peace "We are not bloodthirsty people. We want to stop the bloodshed," Haniya said. (Reuters) Meanwhile, Palestinian Prime Minister-designate Ismail Haniya, a Hamas prominent leader, said his group hoped to reach peace with Israel, AFP reported. Asked in a television interview with CBS News if he could imagine a day when he would be asked to come to the White House to sign a peace accord with Israel, Haniya said replied: "Let's hope so." Haniya, a pragmatist who led the "Change and Reform" list of Hamas candidates to the January stunning victory, has been officially asked by the Palestinian President to form the new government. The United States and European Union have threatened to cut off aid to the Palestinian Authority unless Hamas disarms, "renounces violence" and recognizes Israel. Asked what Hamas would require to renounce violence and recognize Israel, Haniya said Israel must first recognize the rights of the Palestinian people. "That depends on Israel's recognition of a Palestinian state within the boundaries of Gaza, the West Bank, and Al-Quds (Occupied East Jerusalem)," he said. "Only then can there be room for talks." The Palestinian PM-designate was asked what he would say if one of his children told him he wanted to be a martyr. "We are not bloodthirsty people. We want to stop the bloodshed," Haniya replied. "I've never sent anyone on a suicide mission," he said. "If one of my sons came to me and asked me that, I wouldn't even consider giving him my blessing." Haniya had told the Washington Post in February that Hamas did not harbor animosity towards Jews and could establish "peace in stages" with Israel if the latter withdraws to its 1967 borders and recognizes the inalienable rights of the Palestinians. Police in London shut down streets in the heart of the capitals shopping and theater district ahead of a demonstration, which was attended by about 100,000 people. About 2,000 protesters marched in Tokyo. In Pakistan, hundreds of people held anti-war rallies in several cities. US continues assault on 'guerrilla targets' in IraqUS-led forces yesterday pressed on with a highly publicised offensive against suspected 'targets' near the northern Iraqi town of Samarra in their latest bid to weaken a raging insurgency, witnesses said. Many have been killed and even more injured in 'Operation Swarmer' - the latest air-offensive launched by the US-military. US military officials said the operation, involving 50 helicopters, was the biggest air assault since a similar airlift across Iraq just after the war in late April 2003. US ships in Somali pirate clash Two US Navy warships returned fire on a group of suspected pirates off the Somali coast yesterday, killing one person and wounding five. The ships spotted a suspect vessel, which they claimed had opened fire on them. One suspected pirate was killed and a fire started on board the vessel. Hijackings and piracy have recently surged off Somalia - which has had no central government since 1991. A VISIT to India by Denmark's leader has been delayed, the Indian
foreign ministry said today, amid reports New Delhi feared the trip
could provoke new anti-Danish protests by Muslims. The two sides have
found that the proposed timing for the visit was not optimal, the
ministry said.
India and Denmark look forward to the visit of the Danish Prime
Minister to India at an early date.
Newspapers said the Danish Government had agreed, at New Delhi's
request, to delay Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen's visit which
the reports said was due to begin April 2.
India, the reports said, was worried the controversy surrounding the
cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed would overshadow the visit.
In February, large but peaceful protests were staged in several cities
against controversial images of the Prophet Mohammed by Danish
cartoonists that sparked anger among Muslims worldwide.
The protests created tension in some flashpoint areas of India known
for communal violence between Hindus and Muslims.
Police blamed the increased temperatures for providing the spark which
saw demonstrations against the visit to India of US President George
W. Bush in early March degenerate into rioting in the north Indian
city of Lucknow, in which four people were killed.
The caricatures were first published in the Danish newspaper
Jyllands-Posten in September and later reprinted in other mainly
European dailies. They have sparked protests and riots worldwide that
have left dozens of people dead.
Muslims consider any depiction of the prophet to be blasphemous.

It is also said that ikhlaas is intending to single out Allaah alone with acts of obedience. It has also been said that ikhlaas is to forget about the creation by constantly looking towards the Creator. And ikhlaas (sincerity) is a condition for Allaah to accept those righteous actions that are done in accordance with the Sunnah (guidance) of Allaah's Messenger (Sallallahu 'Alayhi wa Sallam - may the peace blessings of Allah be upon him) . So Allaah - the Most High - commanded us with His saying: And they have not been commanded except to worship Allaah alone, having ikhlaas (purity of intention) in their Religion and not setting-up partners with Allaah in the worship of Him. [Soorah al-Bayyinah 38:5]. Abu Umaamah radiallaahu 'anhu (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: Once a man came to Allaah's Messenger (Sallallahu 'Alayhi wa Sallam) and said: What do you think about a person who joins us in the fighting only to seek fame and wealth? So Allaah's Messenger (Sallallahu 'Alayhi wa Sallam) replied: He receives nothing! The man repeated the question three times, each time Allaah's Messenger (Sallallahu 'Alayhi wa Sallam) said: He recieves nothing! Then he said: Indeed Allaah does not accept an action except if it is done with ikhlaas (i.e. purely for Allaah's sake), seeking nothing but His Face. 2 Zayd ibn Thaabit radiallaahu 'anhu relates: The Prophet (Sallallahu 'Alayhi wa Sallam) said: May Allaah brighten whosoever hears my words, memorises them and then conveys them to others. Many a carrier of knowledge does not understand it, and many a carrier of knowledge conveys it to one who has better understanding. There are three things which the heart of a Believer has no malice about: Ikhlaas for Allaah in one's action; sincere advice to the Muslim leaders; and clinging to the Jamaa'ah. 3 The meaning of the above being that these three matters strengthen the heart. And that whosoever adopts them, then his heart will be purified from deceit, corruption and evil. And no servant can be free from Shaytaan (devil) except by having ikhlaas , as Allaah - the Mighty and Majestic -said: Except those of Your servants who have ikhlaas . [Soorah Saad 38:83]. It has been related from one of the pious people that he said: O my soul! Have ikhlaas and then you will be purified. Thus, whenever any share of this world - in which the soul takes comfort and the heart inclines towards, either greatly or slightly - enters into our actions, then it marrs the purity and ruins the ikhlaas . For man becomes preoccupied with his portion of the world and becomes immersed in his desires; and very seldom are his action, or acts of worship, free from temporary objectives or desires of this kind. That is why it has been said: Whosoever secures in his lifetime even a single moment of ikhlaas , seeking the Face of Allaah, he will be saved. This is because ikhlaas is something very precious, and cleansing the heart from impurities is something difficult. So ikhlaas is: Cleansing the heart from all impurities - whether large or small - such that the intention of drawing closer to Allaah is stripped of all other motives, except that. And this matter cannot be imagined, except from someone who truly loves Allaah; and who is so absorbed in thinking about the Aakhirah (Hereafter), that there remains no place in his heat for the love of this world to settle. The likes of such a person - even when he is eating, drinking or answering the call of nature - has ikhlaas in his actions and has correct intentions. However, whosoever is not like this, then the doors of ikhlaas will be closed to him - except in rare exceptions. Likewise, whosoever is overwhelmed with the love of Allaah and the love of the Hereafter, then the actions that he does will all be characterised with this ikhlaas . However, if the person's soul is overwhelmed with this dunyaa (world), then the actions that he does will be characterised with this love, such that no act of worship - whether it be Fasting or Praying, or other than these - will be accepted from him, except in a few cases. The cure for loving this world is to break these worldly desires that the soul has, curing-off the greed it has for this world and purifying it for the Hereafter. This will then become the overwhelming trait of the heart and with this state achieving ikhlaas will become much easier. For how many actions there are that a person does, thinking that they are done with true ikhlaas (sincerity), seeking only the Face of Allaah, but he is deluded, for he does not see the defects in them! [IslamCity] Muslim Heritage: Post and Mail
Peace be upon you,
Once upon a time messages were delivered by word of mouth, by hand or
bird, with smoke signals or engraved on tablets of stone. They didn't
bleep, ring, arrive to the sound of the latest number one pop song, or
at the click of a mouse.
A major breakthrough in communications probably like the internet is
today, was in Baghdad when the Abbasid caliphs used carrier pigeons to
fly straight home from wherever they may be. A fast one-way postal
service, always back to base, became possible. Through selective
breeding of suitable birds, the homing pigeon developed and a Mamluk
Caliph, Baybars, five hundred years later made this a very effective
form of developing messages.
The Muslim scholar Ibn Abd al-Dhahir even wrote a book on carrier
pigeons. He mentions that normally there would be about one thousand
nine hundred pigeons in the lofts of the citadel of Cairo, the
communication nerve center at the time.
Nuwayri, a Muslim chronicler, tells the story of a 10th century
Fatimid Caliph called Aziz who one day in Cairo, felt a desire to eat
fresh cherries of a kind grown in Antioch. The order was sent by
carrier pigeon to Baalbek near Antioch and from there, six hundred
pigeons were released each with two cherries in a silk bag tied to
each leg. Just three days after expressing his desire the Caliph was
served a large bowl containing on thousand two hundred fresh cherries
from Lebanon which had arrived by special `air mail' delivery.
The use of breeding of the homing pigeon has become a global pastime
with racing pigeons frequenting the sky. But pigeons have also had a
practical wartime function in Europe. Pigeon post was in operation as
Paris was besieged during the Franco-Prussian war of 1870-1871. The
four and a half month siege meant that post couldn't be delivered by
the usual means. The only successful method was by the time-honored
carrier pigeon that took thousands of messages, official and private,
in and out of the city.
In 14th century medieval India, it wasn't pigeons but couriers, like a
modern day relay runners who took messages to the Muslim sultan
sitting in Delhi. Ibn Battuta, the roving explorer of the 14th
century, explains that a man carrying a rod with copper bells on the
top would sprint as fast as he could for a third of a mile and on
hearing the bells the next man would get ready to take the mail. In
all it only took five days for a message to get from th Eastern edge
of India to the capital.
As Ibn Battuta traveled over the vast Muslim Empire he found many
ingenious ways to send goods and messages. He sent a payment to his
son in Damascus with a trader he met in Mecca, feeling he could trust
the man with his money because he was a fellow Muslim and because he
came from the same town in Tangier.
So, even as people were miles apart a thousand years ago, they were
connected with the technology of their time.

- Islamic Human Rights Commission - 20 March 2006 Action Alert: Protestors to wear T-shirts with Muhammad Cartoons at Rally this Saturday IHRC urges all campaigners to contact the Metropolitan Police and the Mayor's office to request that they uphold the law and prohibit demonstrators from carrying Islamophobic placards and t-shirts at a 'March for Free Expression' this Saturday 25 March 2006. 1. Background A 'March for Free Expression' is to take place this Saturday 25 March 2006 in Trafalgar Square between 2 and 4 pm. The official purpose of the demonstration is stated to be to support freedom of expression but in reality, it appears to be virulently Islamophobic and racist in nature. The organisers, Peter Risden and Patrick Vidaud, have permitted demonstrators to wear t-shirts bearing the offensive cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and even supply a link on their website to another website where such t-shirts can be purchased. Furthermore, slogans which are being debated to be written on placards include, 'Islam, putting the world at war', 'Islam is a blast', Muhammad was a Sex Offender' and 'Death to Iran'. It is noteworthy that Muslim demonstrators were arrested earlier this month for carrying placards deemed offensive. In addition, Nick Cohen, in an article in the Observer on 19 March labelled Muslims who demonstrated against the cartoons as the brown far right and Islamic fundamentalists demonizing all Muslims as Nazis and fascists when it is actually Muslims who are the current victims of this neo-fascism. Although ostensibly the organisers have stated that the BNP are not welcome, there is much evidence to indicate that many elements of the Far Right will be present on the day. For example, a fascist group 'Civil Liberty', which is lead by BNP North-East organiser Kevin Scott, has issued a call on its website for its supporters to attend the march. It is worrying that an event that appeals to the Islamophobic right is also supported by amongst others British Humanist Association, Ekllesia (a Christian monitoring group), the National Secular Society, UKIP, and Peter Tatchell. This event will set a dangerous precedent will be set whereby Islamophobic groups can use the issue of civil liberties as an excuse to demonise Muslims and Islam. This is not free speech or debate; this is vilification akin to the demonisation of Jews in Nazi Germany.
