What is the difference between the wedding ring engagement ring on which hand should ring be put? Answer 157862005-09-26Islam does not recognise a wedding ring or an engagement ring. These are customs of the kuffaar. Women are allowed to wear rings of gold and silver while men can wear a silver ring weighing less than 4.3 grams. [IslamCity] US Rhetoric on Iran Reminiscent of Pre-War Iraq Stance

2006-05-05 Thread S A Hannan

Dear members of the list,

Assalamu Alaikum. Please read this ominous news from
Islamonline.com.

Shah Abdul Hannan

US Rhetoric on Iran Reminiscent of Pre-War Iraq
  Stance

"Iran is openly challenging the
United Nations," said Ereli.
  WASHINGTON, April 30, 2006 (IslamOnline.net News
Agencies) – Seeking to forge a unified stance against Iran, the Bush
administration is increasingly resorting to the same diplomatic rhetoric
it used in the run-up to the Iraq war, invoking the "coalition of the
willing," "UN credibility" and "weapons of mass destruction"
  clichés.
Nearly four years after President George W. Bush warned the
UN it risked becoming "irrelevant" unless it dealt with Iraqi President
Saddam Hussein, his administration is billing the showdown with Iran as a
new test of UN mettle, Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported Sunday, April
  30.
"Iran is openly challenging the United Nations," deputy State
Department spokesman Adam Ereli said on Friday, April 28.
"That challenge should have consequences in order to sustain
and to reinforce the credibility of the UN as an institution."
In a report to the UN Security Council on Friday,
International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) chief Mohamed ElBaradei said
Tehran had failed to heed calls to stop enriching uranium.
Iran confirmed on Saturday, April 29, it was ready to
re-allow snap UN atomic inspections if its case was dropped by the UN
Security Council and passed back to the UN nuclear watchdog.
  "Like-minded Nations"
Faced with stubborn resistance from veto-wielding Security
Council members Russia and China to punitive measures against Iran, the US
is working on an alternative to UN action as it did for Iraq.
Back then it was a "coalition of the willing" rising up
against Saddam; now it's a group of "like-minded nations" determined to
keep Iran's nuclear ambitions in check.
The US is encouraging countries to consider their own
sanctions against Tehran, such as a cutoff of trade, an embargo on sales
of sensitive materiel, or asset freezes and travel restrictions on Iranian
  leaders.
"It's not beyond the realm of the possible that at some point
in the future a group of countries could get together if the Security
Council is not able to act," said Undersecretary of State Nicholas
  Burns.
"That's important because those that might prevent the
Security Council from acting effectively need to understand that the
international community has to find a way and will find a way to express
  our displeasure with the Iranians."
Except for its chief ally the United Kingdom, the US failed
to drum up support for a military action against Baghdad from world
heavyweights like France and Germany, which insisted on a UN resolution
  first.
Now the US is pressing hard for a new "chapter seven"
Security Council resolution that would open the way for sanctions and, in
  theory, military action.
"We do think there's a sense of urgency here and we hope that
we can get council action just as soon as possible," US Ambassador to the
  UN John Bolton said Friday.
  Military Option

"The right to self-defense does
not necessarily require a UN Security Council resolution," said
Rice.
Underpinning US diplomacy is the always-present threat
of force, if not to topple the Iranian regime then to strike at its
  nuclear facilities.
While publicly committed to a diplomatic track, the US
has consistently refused to take the military option off the table and has
sharpened its tone in recent weeks.
Before the US-led invasion of Iraq, President Bush
insisted that diplomacy had not been yet exhausted to opt for a military
  action.
Bush, speaking in the Rose Garden after the release of
the IAEA report, said he is not discouraged by the failure of diplomatic
  pressure on Iran.
"I think the diplomatic options are just beginning,"
he said, adding that "the world is united and concerned" about Iran's
  nuclear program.
In a speech in Chicago on April 19, Secretary of State
Condoleezza Rice raised echoes of the Bush administration's readiness to
go-it-alone if necessary that put it at odds with many US allies at the
outset of the war in Iraq.
"The right to self-defense does not necessarily
require a UN Security Council resolution," she said.
"We are prepared to use measures at our disposal --
  political, economic

[IslamCity] Chatting and smileys

2006-05-05 Thread adil naveed

As chatting on the Internet is becoming popular 4 muslims when socialisng with friends and relatives instead of using the telephone, a trend has been emerging that people have been giving a blind eye Ask anybody who chats on the internet regularly and they will tell you that sometimes it is difficult to transfer your _expression_ to your chatting buddy, so a smiley face (as they are known) are concatenated to the sentence to show the writers mood. For example, I had my exams yesterday :-), I am getting married tommorrow :-)Answer 159222005-10-12
Chatting on the internet is similar to speaking on the telephone. It is not permissible for male or female to speak on the telephone to the opposite gender who is a Ghayr Mahram (not prohibited in marriage) freely and without necessity. If there is a genuine need which is valid in Shari’ah, then members of the opposite gender may speak through the telephone with modesty and confine the discussion to the need. To speak freely
and beyond necessity is a sin. The same rule applies for chatting on the internet. No person should decide him/herself what is a valid reason in Shari’ah to speak on the phone or chat on the internet. Many people have their own interpretations of genuine need which is not acceptable in Shari’ah. We are aware of many such people who have caused ruin to their lives especially by chatting on the internet with the opposite gender. The _expression_ of smiley faces and sad faces through internet chatting falls in the category of drawing pictures of animate objects which is prohibited. As an alternative, one may express his/her happiness and sadness in words. and Allah Ta'ala Knows Best Mufti Ebrahim Desai http://www.islam.tc/ask-imam/view.php?q=15922

[IslamCity] Good manners and good character:

2006-05-05 Thread s_m_rehman

Good manners and good character:

Islam is a beautiful religion, full of wisdom and harmony. If this wonderful religion is followed properly then a typical Muslim would only be a great example to follow.
Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Amr: "The Prophet never used bad language neither a 'Fahish nor a Mutafahish. He used to say 'The best amongst you are those who have the best manners and character.' (Translation of Sahih Bukhari, Virtues and Merits of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and his Companions, Volume 4, Book 56, Number 759)"
Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Amr: "The Prophet never used bad language neither a "Fahish nor a Mutafahish. He used to say "The best amongst you are those who have the best manners and character." (Translation of Sahih Bukhari, Virtues and Merits of the Prophet (pbuh) and his Companions, Volume 4, Book 56, Number 759)"
Narrated Masruq: "Abdullah bin 'Amr mentioned Allah's Apostle saying that he was neither a Fahish nor a Mutafahish. Abdullah bin 'Amr added, Allah's Apostle said, 'The best among you are those who have the best manners and character.' (Translation of Sahih Bukhari, Good Manners and Form (Al-Adab), Volume 8, Book 73, Number 56)"
Narrated Masruq: "We were sitting with 'Abdullah bin 'Amr who was narrating to us (Hadith): He said, "Allah's Apostle was neither a Fahish nor a Mutafahhish, and he used to say, 'The best among you are the best in character (having good manners)."' (Translation of Sahih Bukhari, Good Manners and Form (Al-Adab), Volume 8, Book 73, Number 61)"
2- Repel evil with Good:

Allah Almighty in the Noble Quran commands us to return the evil that is done to us by others to not only with good, but with best!
The following Noble Verses and comments were sent to me by a Muslim brother; may Allah Almighty always be pleased with him:
Let us look at Noble Verse 13:22 "Those who patiently persevere, seeking the countenance of their Lord; establish regular prayers; spend out of (the gifts) We have bestowed for their sustenance, secretly and openly; and turn off evil with good: for such there is the final attainment of the (Eternal) Home."
Let us look at Noble Verse 23:96 "Repel evil with that which is best: We are Well-acquainted with the things they say."
Let us look at Noble Verse 41:34 "Nor can goodness and evil be equal. Repel (evil) with that is better: Then will he between whom and thee was hatred become as it were thy friend and intimate!."
Let us look at Noble Verse 28:54 "Twice will they be given their reward, for that they have persevered, that they avert evil with good, and that they spend (in charity) out of what We have given them."
Let us look at Noble Verse 42:40 "The recompense for an injury is an injury equal thereto (in degree): but if a person forgives and makes reconciliation, his reward is due from Allah: for (Allah) Loveth not those who do wrong."
Whether people speak evil of you, in your presence or behind your back, or they do evil to you in either of those ways, all is known to Allah Almighty. It is not for you to punish. Your best course is not to do evil in your turn, but to do what will best repel the evil. Two evils do not make a good.
You do not return good for evil, for there is no equality or comparison between the two. You repel or destroy evil with something which is far better, just as an antidote is better than poison. You foil hatred with love. You repel ignorance with knowledge, folly and wickedness with the friendly message of Revelation. The man who was in bondage of sin, you not only liberate from sin, but make him your greatest friend and helper in the cause of Allah Almighty!. Such is the alchemy of the Word of Allah Almighty!. Your credit for returning evil with good and paying for charity is double. Also if you forgive and return the evil with good, then Allah Almighty will love you and reward you.

3- Further good manners teachings in the Noble Quran:

"It is part of the Mercy of Allah that thou dost deal gently with them. Wert thou severe or harsh-hearted, they would have broken away from about thee: so pass over (their faults), and ask for (Allah's) forgiveness for them; and consult them in affairs (of moment). Then, when thou hast taken a decision, put thy trust in Allah. For Allah loves those who put their trust (in Him). (The Noble Quran, 3:159)""Those who spend (freely), whether in prosperity, or in adversity; who restrain anger, and pardon (all) men; for Allah loves those who do good. (The Noble Quran, 3:134)" "Hold to forgiveness; command what is right; but turn away from the ignorant. (The Noble Quran, 7:199)""Allah loveth not that evil should be noised a broad in public speech, except where injustice hath been done; for Allah is He Who heareth and knoweth all things. (The Noble Quran, 4:148)""Say to My servants that they should (only) say those things that are best: for Satan doth sow dissensions among them: for Satan is to man an avowed enemy. (The Noble Quran, 17:53)""Who avoid vain talk; (The Noble Quran,

[IslamCity] Prophet's saying - On Friday Sermon

2006-05-05 Thread Shahid Khan

On Friday Sermon

YAHYA related to me from Malik from Abu'n Nadr, the mawla of Umar ibn Ubaydullah, from Malik ibn Abi Amir that Uthman ibn Affan used to say in khutbas, and he would seldom omit it if he was giving the khutba, "When the imam stands delivering the khutba on the day of jumua, listen and pay attention, for there is the same portion for someone who pays attention but cannot hear as for someone who pays attention and hears.

And when the iqama of the prayer is called, straighten your rows and make your shoulders adjacent to each other, because the straightening of the rows is part of the completion of the prayer."

Then he would not say the takbir until some men who had been entrusted with straightening the rows came and told him that they were straight. Then he would say the takbir.

Re: [IslamCity] Muslim World: Morocco - Women Islamic Preachers deployed for First Time

2006-05-05 Thread Carol-Anne Braganca

salaam,i read this story last week on al jezzerah online in the english section i think it is an excellent idea to show that not all muslim are exteremist but i find that in north africa in some countries like tunasia, algeria, and marracco is very french but i totally agree it is an excellent idea. carol[EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Women preachers: Morocco's new weapon against Islamic extremism Fri Apr 28, 2:17 AM ET RABAT (AFP) - In a project unknown in Islam, Morocco has just graduated its first team of women preachers to be deployed as a vanguard in the kingdom's
fight against any slide towards Islamic extremism. ADVERTISEMENT "This is a rare experiment in the Muslim world," proudly stated Mohamed Mahfoud, director of the center attached to the Islamic affairs ministry that trained this first class of 50 women. Ministry spokesman Hamid Rono said it was the "first (of its kind) in the Islamic world". This pioneer group of Morchidat, or guides, who finished a 12-month course in early April, were trained to
"accompany and orient" Muslim faithful, notably in prisons, hospitals and schools, said Mahfoud. They will earn a salary of 5,000 dirhams (450 euros, 560 dollars) per month. Short and plump, a scarf knotted around her head to cover her hair in line with religious custom, a smiling Samira Marzouk, in her 30s like most of the others, exclaims how "proud" she is to be part of this first group. She sees their mission as one to "fill in the gaps that prevent a solid framework for religion". "We are going to teach a tolerant Islam by focussing on the underprivileged classes," she added. They will notably work with women and children in poor ghettoes seen as fertile ground for extremist recruiters. The idea of the Morchidat, spearheaded by King Mohammed VI and the government, took off after Islamic extremist attacks in the Moroccan economic capital Casablanca on May 16, 2003 claimed 45 lives -- including the 12 bombers
-- and left dozens of others wounded. The King -- who is a descendant of Islam's founder, the Prophet Mohamed, and enjoys wide powers -- had already started reshaping religious structures to rein in any extremist drift in his North African country, which borders Algeria where violence between government forces and armed Islamic extremists has caused more than 150,000 deaths since 1992. But the synchronized suicide bomb attacks that hit Jewish and foreign targets gave new urgency to the initiative. More than 2,000 people were arrested in vast police sweeps after the May bombings as the king vowed the attacks would be the last to rock Morocco. Investigators concluded that those behind the incident had indeed sought recruits in the teeming slums around Casablanca, Morocco's biggest city. Marzouk, a young married woman with a diploma in Arab literature who said she knows the Koran by heart, was quick to specify she is "not going
to take the place of an imam". "The imamate in Islam is restricted solely to men who are apt at leading prayers, notably those on Friday," the Islamic holy day, she said. "The Morchidat will be in charge of leading religious discussions, give courses in Islam, give moral support to people in difficulty and guide the faithful towards a tolerant Islam," she added. Another graduate, Leila Fares, a lively young woman who holds a degree in Islamic studies, said she saw the Morchidat's role as promoting "the true face of Islam". "We will help attenuate any drift towards Islamic extremism," she said, stressing that "an overall approach is needed to dealing with radical Islam". During the year-long course, the curriculum ranged from Islamic studies to psychology, sociology, computer skills, economy, law and business management. "Sports was the only subject dropped from the women preachers' training because the
schedule was just too tight," regretted Mahfoud, who hopes to include it for the second batch of Morchidate trainees, whose applications are now being accepted. For the Islamic affairs minister, Ahmed Taoufiq, the Morchidat will also "instruct women on their basis religious duties". He said religious radicalism was not part of Morocco's culture "but you can never prevent evil one hundred percent". Morocco's Islamic fundamentalists are divided over the inititive. For one, Islamist deputy Mustapha Ramid with the Islamist Justice and Development party (PJD), the main opposition group with 43 seats in the 325-member parliament, the Morchidat is a "positive" development. "I see nothing more to say about this initiative because in Islam, men and women are equal," he said, pointing to Egypt which has "eminent women scholars of Islam". But the head of the youth group in Morocco's most radical Islamic fundamentalist association, Al-Adl
Wal-Ihssane (Justice and Welfare), forecast it would have no effect on the ground. "The power behind this initiative is the same as the one that
