[IslamCity] Our heritage at stake

2006-05-09 Thread saiyed shahbazi

Our heritage at stake By Irfan Husain ALTHOUGH 13 years have passed since the destruction of Babri Masjid in Ayodhya, the desecration still reverberates in both Muslim and secular Indian minds. At the time, protestors rioted across the subcontinent; furious editorials and op-ed articles were written; and Muslim countries formally registered their protests with the Indian government. But now, a far worse act of disrespect and desecration is about to take place, and there has not been a single mention or objection from anybody that I know of, at least here in Pakistan. It took an article in the Toronto Star, e-mailed to me by a reader, to alert me to the fact that the Saudi government plans to demolish the Prophet Mohammad's [PBUH] 1,400-years old home in Makkah. According to the article, written by Tarek Fatah, a founding member of the Muslim Canadian
Council, the house is being destroyed to make way for "a parking lot, two 50-storey hotel towers and seven 35-storey apartment blocks" as part of the Jabal Omar Scheme, just around the corner from the Grand Mosque. I must confess that I have not made the pilgrimage to Makkah, but the idea of the religious cradle and centre of the Muslim world being dominated by a crassly commercial project is repugnant. The Saudi royal family claims to be guardians of the holy places of Islam, and profit hugely from the centuries-old traffic of believers to Makkah and Madina. And yet, they are party to this barbaric desecration of the holiest sites in the Islamic world. In the 1920s, the Saudis levelled the graveyard in Madina that contained the graves of the family and companions of the Prophet. A few years ago, they demolished an old Ottoman fort in Makkah, in spite of the protests of the Turkish government. This
disrespect for ancient monuments is a hallmark of Wahabi thought, but one would have thought the Prophet's home would have been exempt. Clearly, the interests of property developers outweigh religious or historical considerations. Why has there not been a single significant protest from anywhere in the Muslim world? Or, as Tarek Fatah asks, "Why is it that when the Babri mosque was demolished, hundreds of thousands of Muslims worldwide took to the streets to protest, but when Saudi authorities plan to demolish the home of our beloved Prophet, not a whisper is heard?" The writer speculates on the reason for this silence: "Is it because Muslims have become so overwhelmed by the power of the Saudi riyal currency that we have lost all courage and self-respect? Or is it because we feel a need to cover up Muslim-on-Muslim violence; Muslim-on-Muslim terror; Muslim-on-Muslim oppression?" I
suspect 'all of the above' is the right answer. We constantly rail against any wrongs inflicted on fellow-Muslims by non-believers, but hold our peace when Muslims kill, exploit and terrorize other Muslims. Thus, when the Americans kill Iraqis, or the Russians persecute Chechens, we are rightly indignant. But when Saddam Hussein slaughtered Kurds and Shias for years, Muslims around the world maintained a discreet silence. Ditto for other dictators in most of the Muslim world. In his article, Fatah quotes Niaz Salimi, president of the MCC, from a letter she wrote to the Saudi envoy in Canada: "The sacred places of Islam, regardless of where they are located, belong to the Muslim community worldwide. The countries where they are located are simply trustees and have no right to destroy them." A Google search on the internet led me to an article by Mirza Beg, posted on the Web on August 21. Writes
Beg: "...destroying our precious heritage because of less than perfect understanding of some Muslims [read Wahabis], would be a great loss to the Islamic civilization, ethos, history and the future generations of Muslims. Destruction of the most precious sites of Islam for fear of idolatry by some, is akin to killing a child for fear that he may grow up to be less than pious..." Now obviously, the Saudis are free to fill their cities with tasteless buildings. But considering the size of the country, one would expect them to show some respect for our collective heritage and build their new, ostentatious plazas, hotels and shopping malls on the outskirts of ancient cities like Makkah and Madina. But we all know the Saudi mindset, and given their recent windfall in the shape of unprecedented oil prices, it is unlikely that they will listen to reason. What concerns me more is our reluctance
to criticize this uncouth behaviour. Our Islamic parties, for instance, are so eager to take up real and imaginary Muslim causes, but have not uttered a squeak in the face of this flagrant contempt for our history and the Prophet's memory. What explains this blatant hypocrisy? While many of our major religious politicians have long been recipients of Saudi largesse (allegedly often in the shape of visas and work permits that they sell), what explains the silence of people and parties who are not influenced

[IslamCity] The Muslim Brotherhood And Political Party

2006-05-09 Thread S A Hannan

Dear members of the list,

Assalamu Alaikum.I am forwarding an important statement of
Muslim Brotherhood on " The Muslim Brotherhood And Political Party". The
statement reflects the reality of Egyptian situation and Muslim Brotherhood's
effort to adjust there. The policy of Islamic groups in other countries
may be different ,though the essentials will probably be the
same.

Shah Abdul Hannan

The
  Muslim Brotherhood And Political Party

Al Said Ramadan, Ikhwanweb - Cairo,
  Egypt

Friday, May 05, 2006

Prompted by those who defy granting the Muslim Brotherhood an official
political party that would enable them of serving and defending the people
and combating any exterior pressures (under the pretext that the law
prohibits the formation of religious-based parties), the Muslim
Brotherhood have issued a statement, announcing that they represent an
integrated Islamic body that has historical, political and social
legitimacy, and that has influence and prevalence covering all Egypt.
The MB, according to the statement, seeks to establish a civil
party of an Islamic authority in accordance with article II of
the Egyptian constitution. The statement adds that the constitution
secures freedom of political practice for all Egyptians, party members and
independents, and that the MBs will adopt all possible peaceful and
civilized methods, in compliance with the constitution, to practice their
  constitutional and political rights.
Actually, the MB’s keenness to form a political party is not new. Such
goal goes back to 1984, when the MB drafted a program for the Shura Party,
during the office of Umar At-Tilmisani, and another program for the Islah
Party, during the office of Mohamed Hamed Abu-an-Nasr. This is asserted by
the MB in their March 1994 statement entitled Counseling and Party
Multiplicity in the Muslim Society, as well as in their March 2004
initiative under the naming Freedom of Political Party Formation.
I- The Nature of the prospective party for the Muslim
  Brotherhood
A.A civil party with an Islamic authority: a definition
1.Party: This means a group of people who
advocate one and the same open political program, and who work together to
promote their program with the objective of gaining
  rule.
2.Civil: By civil party, it is meant a party
that is NOT religious-based. Religious-based parties tend
to be dogmatic parties that recruit only members affiliated to the same
religion, as they do not accept the other. Most such parties believe that
they have the ultimate truth and reckon any opponent a disbeliever
(blasphemous). They do not accede to peaceful conferring with the
authorities and reject democracy, but if they do, it is only to gain
power; then they slap any opponent whomsoever in the face. The MB, on the
other hand, pointedly refuses all such notions.
A civil party differs from a religious-based one along the
  following points:
a.Recruits could be any civilian, irrespective
  of his/her religion or affiliation.b.The
adopted program is developed by the group’s members. It is not ‘holy’ or
‘sacred’, and thus could be amended or refuted.
c.The adopted program is a peaceful one. It
acknowledges women rights, liberties, peaceful conferring with the
authority, elections, dialogue, allies, conferences, marches,
  demonstrations, mass media, etc.d.The civil
party rejects all means of violence, including verbal
violence.e.The civil party believes that people
are the source of authority, legitimacy, and self-determination: the
nation’s will is the source of legislation.
f.The civil party respects constitution and
law, and acts accordingly.g.The civil party
acknowledges liberties as well as civil, political, economic, social, and
  cultural rights. h.The civil party
reckons the state one entity, safeguarding its institutions and refusing
any practice that would distort this.i.The
civil party realizes the importance of the role of the civil community,
thus is keen to boost and support the different bodies and institutions in
  the community.
•It is worth mentioning that the MB has set a good example to
everyone concerning the implementation of all the aforementioned points.
This finds evidence in their political activities in all fields, in spite
their being a political outcast. The MB, for example, fielded a feminine
candidate (Gihan Al-Halafawi) for the elections of the People’s Assembly
for the year 2000. By this, they intended to demonstrate their actual
  acknowledgment of women’s rights, and

The following narrations from: BULUGH

OF THE FAMOUS IMAM AL HAFIZ IBN HAJAR
AL-ASQALANI with the foot note of "Subul-us-Salaam"
written by Muhammad bin Ismail As-Sanani.

Narrated Ibn Umar (Radhiallahu Anhu) The Prophet (Sallahu alaihi Wasallam)
(when he stood up for prayer) used to raise his hands parallel to his
shoulders[1] when he starts the prayer (by saying Allahu Akbar), when he utters
the takbir to bow and when he raises his head from the Ruku' (bowing
posture) (Agreed Upon)[ Sahih Buhari and Muslim].

Abu Da'ud reported a Hadith narrated by Abu Humaid (Radhiallahu Anhu)
to the effect that he (Allah's Messenger Sallahu alaihi Wasallam) used to
raise his hands and bring them parallel to his shoulders, and then utter the takbir.

In the version of Muslim, a Hadith narrated by Malik bin Huwairith (Radhiallahu
Anhu) is same as the Hadith narrated by Ibn Umar (Radhiallahu Anhu). But he
mentioned: "He (Allah's Messenger Sallahu alaihi Wasallam) raised
his hands parallel to the end of his ears."

Foot note:

[1] This narration of Abdullah bin Umar (Radhiallahu Anhu) is clear
enough to prove that at the start of a prayer, at the time of bowing and at
rising from bowing, the raising of hands up to ears is SUNNAH. The words (kana yarfahu)
denote the perpetuity. It proves that raising of hands was not cancelled nor given
up. All the Ahadith against the 'raising of hands' are Da'if
(weak) or Maudu' (forged). Amoung the weak Ahadith, weaknesses of some
are unanimously agreed and some are controversial. From all of them, the
narration of Abdullah bin Mas'ud (Radhiallahu Anhu)   is regarded as
better. Imam Bukhari quoted his teacher 'Ali bin Madini's legal
opinion on the basis of Abdullah bin Umar's narration that is becomes
essential for all Muslims to raise hands. Controversy of this issue is too
lengthy to be discussed here.

Ibn Hajar Al- Asqalani
authored more than 150 books - most of them being in the studies. His books
most worthy of mentioning is FATH AL- BARI
- THE COMMENTRY OF SAHIH AL BUHARI.

according to
some school of thoughts "Rafa Yadain" is compulsory while offering
SALAH. However, as per the interpretation of Hanfi school of thought, the
approach is some how different

I would like
to have your say about one of the issue which I face while offering the prayers
(Nimaz). It would be very kind of you if a detailed clarification could be
given about the above mentioned issue as to what method should be adopted that
is also best supported by Sunnah / Hadith.

[IslamCity] Re: IS IT HARAM TO LOVE SOMEONE OTHER THAN YOUR SPOUSE?

2006-05-09 Thread angelofansar

Al Salaamu Alaikum,
It depends why you love him; and if you really love him or if it is
just an obsession. I don't believe we were given hearts of stone to
perform purely contractual marriages with no feelings between the two
people; and while Islam does provide safeguards and a tahir type of
love, because the two do not know each other before marriage, so they
learn only about their spouses once they do marry, and it is that
other person they learn to trust and to share their feelings and life
with, when there is an overwhelming feeling between two people (more
than just lust) I don't think it should be ignored. It is like when
you meet someone and you are totally comfortable with them even
though you may know nothing about them, in some way, perhaps in
another life they were in your life for a reason. You say the reason
you could not marry the person you love was because of your families;
so what are you now betrothed to? A loveless existence based on
pretense? Allah did not create love to be ignored, you should find a
way to work that out; but I do not mean by committing zina. If you
could work it out between the families, then try to be with the one
you may have been destined for.

Salaams,

untruthful and unfare to this marriage. I have tried
for the past two years (since I've been married) to
forget about that person and move on. I understand
that to be in love or fall in love with someone other
than your spouse in baseless according to Islam. But
what shall a person do when facing this dilema? How do
I achieve control over my emotions? Please understand
that I have no communication or contact with the one
I'm inlove with. We have not spoken since before my
wedding 2 years ago. Your detailed answer will be
 greatly appreciated and helpful!
 InshAllah...Aslamalakum

 ANSWER
There are two types of love: voluntary and
 involuntary.

The involuntary love is where there is a feeling of
 love in the heart. But
one does not cultivate or pursue this feeling. One
 tries to ignore this
feeling but it causes pain. For this pain, one will be
 rewarded. The more
one makes Sabr, uses one intellect and understands
 that it is not practical
to follow the demands of this love, then one is
 drawing closer to Allah Ta'
ala due to the Sabr (patience) one is adopting.

The second type of love is voluntary. After
 experiencing the feeling of love
in the heart, one contemplates about the beloved one.
 To have this type of
love for someone besides one's wife is sinful. It is
 sinful to intentionally
fantasise about this other woman. If at the time of
 intimacy with one;s
wife, one fantasises about this other woman, then you
 will be considered to
be making Zina. You will get the sin of Zina because
 of your intentions
while your wife will get no sin.

The solution is to ignore this love in the heart. Do
 not contemplate or
fantasise about this person and avoid contact with
 her. If any thought about
this woman involuntarily enters the mind, ignore it.
 Ignoring it causes you
pain then make Sabr, for which you will be highly
 rewarded. If you pass away
in this state, then, Insha Allah, you will receive the
 reward of one who was
martyred in the path of Allah Ta'ala.

Make Du'aa unto Allah Ta'ala to replace the love of a
 mortal with his
eternal love. May Allah Ta'ala grant us all his true
 love, Aameen.

 and Allah Ta'ala Knows Best

Palestine Right to Return Newsletter for Friday, May 05, 2006Issue: 23(note: this email is best viewed as html document)Dear Al-Awda Newsletter Subscribers,We are approaching the 58th Anniversary of the Palestinian Nakba, the Catastrophe in which the Zionist movement intentionally displaced
over 800,000 indigenous Palestinians from our homes, our villages, towns and cities. Over 500 villages were destroyed during the ethnic cleansing of 1947-1948 when Zionist militias systematically attacked Palestinian areas to clear the land of its people. As the Canadian, US and European governments push forward the Zionist agenda of erasing the memory of the Nakba, and work to undermine the right of Palestinian refugees to return to the lands we were displaced from, it has become increasingly important for us all to stand together in the fight to return the Palestinian people to Palestine, and to return Palestine to ALL of its people.Below, and on the http://www.al-awda.ca website you will find information on Nakba commemoration events happening in Toronto and elsewhere. You can find information on these events and many others happening all over the country on our events calendar at: http://www.al-awda.ca/index.php?module=PostCalendar Due to the popularity of our Beginner Arabic Classes and the very positive feedback we received, Al-Awda Toronto is pleased to announcetwo Beginner Arabic Classes beginning on June 1 and June 5, and ending in early August. [IslamCity] Classical education

2006-05-09 Thread saiyed shahbazi

Classical education depends on a three-part process of training the mind. The early years of school are spent in absorbing facts, systematically laying the foundations for advanced study. In the middle grades, students learn to think through arguments. In the high school years, they learn to express themselves. This classical pattern is called the trivium. The first years of schooling are called the "grammar stage" — not because you spend four years doing English, but because these are the years in which the building blocks for all other learning are laid, just as grammar is the foundation for language. In the elementary school years — what we commonly think of as grades one through four — the mind is ready to absorb information. Children at this age actually find memorization fun. So during this period, education involves not self-_expression_ and self-discovery, but rather the learning of facts. Rules
of phonics and spelling, rules of grammar, poems, the vocabulary of foreign languages, the stories of history and literature, descriptions of plants and animals and the human body, the facts of mathematics — the list goes on. This information makes up the "grammar," or the basic building blocks, for the second stage of education. By fifth grade, a child's mind begins to think more analytically. Middle-school students are less interested in finding out facts than in asking "Why?" The second phase of the classical education, the "Logic Stage," is a time when the child begins to pay attention to cause and effect, to the relationships between different fields of knowledge relate, to the way facts fit together into a logical framework.A student is ready for the Logic Stage when the capacity for abstract thought begins to mature. During these years, the student begins algebra and the study of logic, and begins to apply logic to all academic
subjects. The logic of writing, for example, includes paragraph construction and learning to support a thesis; the logic of reading involves the criticism and analysis of texts, not simple absorption of information; the logic of history demands that the student find out why the War of 1812 was fought, rather than simply reading its story; the logic of science requires that the child learn the scientific method. The final phase of a classical education, the "Rhetoric Stage," builds on the first two. At this point, the high school student learns to write and speak with force and originality. The student of rhetoric applies the rules of logic learned in middle school to the foundational information learned in the early grades and expresses his conclusions in clear, forceful, elegant language. Students also begin to specialize in whatever branch of knowledge attracts them; these are the years for art camps, college courses, foreign travel,
apprenticeships, and other forms of specialized training.A classical education is more than simply a pattern of learning, though. Classical education is language-focused; learning is accomplished through words, written and spoken, rather than through images (pictures, videos, and television). Why is this important? Language-learning and image-learning require very different habits of thought. Language requires the mind to work harder; in reading, the brain is forced to translate a symbol (words on the page) into a concept. Images, such as those on videos and television, allow the mind to be passive. In front of a video screen, the brain can "sit back" and relax; faced with the written page, the mind is required to roll its sleeves up and get back to work.A classical education, then, has two important aspects. It is language-focused. And it follows a specific three-part pattern: the mind must be first supplied with facts and images, then given the
logical tools for organization of facts, and finally equipped to express conclusions. But that isn't all. To the classical mind, all knowledge is interrelated. Astronomy (for example) isn't studied in isolation; it's learned along with the history of scientific discovery, which leads into the church's relationship to science and from there to the intricacies of medieval church history. The reading of the Odyssey leads the student into the consideration of Greek history, the nature of heroism, the development of the epic, and man's understanding of the divine. This is easier said than done. The world is full of knowledge, and finding the links between fields of study can be a mind-twisting task. A classical education meets this challenge by taking history as its organizing outline — beginning with the ancients and progressing forward to the moderns in history, science, literature, art and music. We suggest that the twelve years of education
consist of three repetitions of the same four-year pattern: Ancients, Middle Ages, Renaissance and Reformation, and Modern Times. The child studies these four time periods at varying levels — simple for grades 1-4, more difficult in grades 5-8 (when the student

[IslamCity] SUPERMAN IS MORO

2006-05-09 Thread Assalamu Aleikum

Superman is Moro
First of two parts
By ADEL A. TAMANO
May 3, 2006
http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/storypage.aspx?StoryId=37479

Superman is a Moro. How do I know this? He has too
many similarities with the contemporary Moro that
simple logic reveals his true identity and ethnicity.
Let’s turn to the facts which confirm that, indeed
icon, this of goodness, truth and decency, the man of
steel, is a Filipino Muslim.

Proof No. 1: He has a Moro name. This is the biggest
give-away—Kal-El is the real name of Clark Kent,
Superman’s mild-mannered alter ego. His given name is
incredibly similar to common Filipino Muslim names
like Khalil or even Ysmael and Abdul. In fact, for
this reason, for him to get a job in the Philippines,
he would have to use a pseudonym. According to the
latest Social Weather Stations survey, Filipinos
prefer hiring people with Christian-sounding names
than those whose names appear to be of Islamic
etymology.

Without a doubt, within the context of the global war
on terrorism, wherein the usual suspects are those of
the Islamic faith, it becomes easy to rationalize the
preference. It needn’t be rooted any longer in
stereotypes of Moros as violent, aggressive, and
vicious, the classic juramentado, but can be much more
easily and socially acceptable on the basis of general
security concerns.

While liberalism encourages and advances the
renunciation of discrimination and stereotyping, new
anxieties about terrorism and safety provide seemingly
liberal-minded people a basis for discriminating
against Muslims without the concomitant guilt. In
fact, honestly, whom would you prefer to hire as your
clerk, manager, driver, etc., Kal-El, or Clark?

Proof No. 2: He has to keep his real identity a
secret. Imagine how difficult it must be for a person
with the power to fly, smash through walls, bounce
bullets off his chest, and x-ray vision to keep these
phenomenal abilities secret. Most people would want to
shout it out to the world, publicize it, and,
ultimately, capitalize on it. But Superman is
different. And wise. He knows that in the increasingly
globalized and homogenized world, being alien,
different, and outside the norm is a sure-fire way to
becoming ostracized and misunderstood. This is the
reason why he dons his suit and tie. This is the
supreme irony: it is his corporate attire and not the
blue tights with the Superman logo and big red cape
that is his real costume. The coat and tie conceals
his authentic identity—as an alien and, ultimately, an
outsider.

This is the same situation that the Moro faces; a case
in point is the fact that many Filipino Muslims, when
interacting with the Christian majority, have to adopt
Christian names—Michael instead of Muhammad—as a way
of sidestepping discrimination. This too is an aspect
of an emerging Moro culture of keeping things hidden
and undercover. The name itself is a costume, a
camouflage, to conceal the reality of being Muslim and
therefore different from the Catholic majority.

In fact, Moro women, particularly in Metro Manila,
suffering daily the indignities of subtle
discrimination, such as Taxi drivers refusing to
accept as passengers veiled (hijab-wearing) Muslim
women, are forced to forego using the hijab when
taking public transportation, keeping their
Muslim-ness incognito. For both Moro genders, the
badges of being a Moro, which include the cultural
traits of the Moro as Maranaw, Maguindanao, or Tausug,
as well as the indivisible Islamic element that
infuses the culture of these Muslim tribes, such as
headscarves, Moro hats (kupya), beards and prayer
beads, are eschewed for modern clothing for easier
acceptance.

Even prayer, the most fundamental of human actions,
with man communing with his creator, has to be done
clandestinely. It is not difficult to recall the
recent furor that was raised over the request of Moro
merchants in Greenhills to build a small prayer room
so that they could perform salah (prayer). Some
prominent members of Philippine society vehemently
objected, using the media as their forum, to the
establishment of the prayer room, at times using the
most racially and ethnically discriminatory of
arguments.

Proof No. 3: He is forced not to wear his ethnic
costume. This is really a corollary to No. 2, but the
use of clothing to emphasize and express pride in
one’s culture only makes sense in a world without
prejudice, particularly when one belongs to a
minority. In this world, wherein intolerance abounds,
emphasizing cultural pride, particularly when it is
Moro pride, produces real-world problems.

Interestingly, some Moro women, and their counterparts
in the West, have taken to wearing the veil as an
overt political statement, a reaffirmation of their
Islamic faith in the face of discrimination. It is
worn, literally, as a badge of fearlessness and
courage knowing that an intolerant society will make
them suffer, in ways subtle and otherwise, for their
beliefs.
