[IslamCity] Article: RIGHTS OF WOMEN ACCORDING TO QURAN AND HADITHS / Human and Citizens Rights in Islam

2006-05-12 Thread Curtis Sharif

Bismillah, As Salaam Alaikum In addition to these Rights of Women, Allah has endowed well documented Human and Citizens Rights that we are all obligated to recognize, respect and protect. These include :RIGHTS OF CITIZENS IN AN ISLAMIC STATE The Security of Life and Property The Protection of Honor The Sanctity and Security of Private Life The Security of Personal Freedom The Right to Protest Against Tyranny Freedom of __Expression Freedom of Association Freedom of Conscience and Conviction Protection of Religious Sentiments Protection from Arbitrary Imprisonment The Right to Basic Necessities of Life Equality Before Law Rulers Not Above the Law The Right to Avoid Sin The Right to Participate in the Affairs of State While there are those who would block equal access to the masjid by dictate, based on their personal preferances, the earliest Caliphs demonstrated how they submitted their personal views to the principles of the Religion of Islam.Allah in the Holy Quran asks :"Have you considered, if he was on right guidance, or was enjoining true piety, why he would forbid someone from prayer?" Sura 6-19Women's Right to Attend MosquesNarrated Ibn Umar: The Prophet (p.b.u.h) said, "Allowwomen to go to the Mosques at night." (Bukhari Volume2, Book 13, Number 22)Narrated Ibn Umar: One of the wives of Umar (binAl-Khattab) used to offer the Fajr and the 'Isha'prayer in congregation in the Mosque. She was askedwhy she had come out for the prayer as she knew thatUmar disliked it, and he has great ghaira(self-respect). She replied, "What prevents him fromstopping me from this act?" The other replied, "Thestatement of Allah's Apostle (p.b.u.h) : 'Do not stopAllah's women-slave from going to Allah s Mosques'prevents him." (Bukhari Volume 2, Book 13, Number 23)Ibn 'Umar reported: Grant permission to women forgoing to the mosque in the night. His son who wascalled Waqid said: Then they would make mischief. He(the narrator) said: He thumped his (son's) chest andsaid: I am
narrating to you the hadith of theMessenger of Allah (may peace be upon him), and yousay: No! (Sahih Muslim Book 004, Number 0890)Ibn Umar reported: The Messenger of Allah (may peacebe upon him) said: Do not deprive women of their shareof the mosques, when they seek permission from you.Bilal said: By Allah, we would certainly prevent them.'Abdullah said: I say that the Messenger of Allah (maypeace be upon him) said it and you say: We wouldcertainly prevent them! (Sahih Muslim Book 004, Number0891)Yahya related to me from Malik from Yahya ibn Saidthat Atika bint Zayd ibn Amr ibn Nufayl, the wife ofUmar ibn al-Khattab, used to ask Umar ibn al-Khattabfor permission to go to the mosque. He would keepsilent, so she would say, "By Allah, I will go out, unless you forbid me," and he would not forbid her.(Sunan Abu Dawud Book 14, Number 14.5.14)

[IslamCity] Article: Spirit of Tolerance in Islam

2006-05-12 Thread Curtis Sharif

Bismillah, As Salaam AlaikumThe practice of tolerance is part of the Muslim character. The practice of intolerance is demonstrated when Masjid officials block worshipper' access to the Masjid by coercion and dictate, without any Sharia due process, or proving them guilty of any punishable offense.Excerpts:"Tolerance is a basic principle of Islam. It is a religious moral duty." "Tolerance is the mechanism that upholds human rights, pluralism (including cultural pluralism), and the rule of law."The Qur'an says very clearly: "To every People have We appointed rites and ceremonies which they must follow, let them not then dispute with you on the matter, but do invite (them) to your
Lord: for you are assuredly on the Right Way""Tolerance comes from our recognition of: 1. The dignity of the human beings, 2. The basic equality of all human beings, 3. Universal human rights, and 4. Fundamental freedom of thought, conscience and belief. ""The Qur'an speaks about the basic dignity of all human beings. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) spoke about the equality of all human beings...""Shari`ah recognizes the rights of all people to life, property, family, honor and conscience." "Islam emphasizes the establishment of equality and justice, both of these values cannot be established without some degree of tolerance. ""...in the matters of religion, coercion is not permissible...""...Muslims do not coerce people..."

It is a religious moral duty. Muslims are tolerant with their enemies, let alone their fellow Muslims. Islam teaches tolerance on
all levels: individual, groups and states. It should be a political and legal requirement. Tolerance is the mechanism that upholds human rights, pluralism (including cultural pluralism), and the rule of law. The Qur'an says very clearly: (To every People have We appointed rites and ceremonies which they must follow, let them not then dispute with you on the matter, but do invite (them) to your Lord: for you are assuredly on the Right Way. If they do wrangle with you, say, 'God knows best what it is you are doing.' 'God will judge between you on the Day of Judgment concerning the matters in which you differ') (Al-Hajj 21:76-69). Intolerance is on the increase in the world today, causing death, genocide, violence, religious persecution as well as confrontations on different levels. Some times it is racial and ethnic, some times it is religious and ideological, other times
it is political and social. In every situation it is evil and painful. How can we solve the problem of intolerance? How can we assert our own beliefs and positions without being intolerant to others? How can we bring tolerance into the world today? Tolerance comes from our recognition of: 1. The dignity of the human beings, 2. The basic equality of all human beings, 3. Universal human rights, and 4. Fundamental freedom of thought, conscience and belief. The Qur'an speaks about the basic dignity of all human beings. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) spoke about the equality of all human beings, regardless of their race, color, language or ethnic background. Shari`ah recognizes the rights of all people to life, property, family, honor and conscience. Islam emphasizes the establishment of equality and justice, both of these values cannot be established without some degree of tolerance. Islam
recognized from the very beginning the principle of freedom of belief or freedom of religion. It said very clearly that it is not allowed to have any coercion in the matters of faith and belief. The Qur'an says, (There is no compulsion in religion) (Al-Baqarah 2:256). If in the matters of religion, coercion is not permissible, then by implication one can say that in other matters of cultures and other worldly practices it is also not acceptable. In surat Ash-Shura Allah says to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), (If then they turn away, We have not sent you as a guard over them. Your duty is but to convey (the Message)…) (Ash-Shura 42:48). In another place Allah says, (Invite (all) to the Way of your Lord with wisdom and beautiful preaching; and argue with them in ways that are best and most gracious. Your Lord knows best, who have strayed from His Path, and who receive guidance) (An-Nahl 16:125). Further, Allah says to
the Believers, (Obey Allah, and obey the Messenger, and beware (of evil): if you do turn back, know then that it is Our Messenger's duty to proclaim (the Message) in the clearest manner) (Al-Ma’idah 5:92). One can also cite Allah's words: (Say: 'Obey Allah, and obey the

[IslamCity] Halal Forum Tackles Industry Commercial Aspects

  Halal Forum Tackles Industry Commercial
  Aspects

"Experience has shown that
theological debate as to what halal is and what isn't can delay the
growth of the market considerably," said
Khairy.
  KUALA LUMPUR, May 9, 2006 (IslamOnline.net News
Agencies) – Going beyond the usual academic and religious discussions,
participants in the World Halal Forum, currently hosted by Kula Lumpur,
are looking at the sector in commercial terms, discussing how to regulate
  and promote the booming industry.
"We believe this event could potentially help develop the
industry and chart its direction in the near future," said Jumaatun Azmi,
managing director of KasehDia, the organizer, reported Agence
  France-Presse (AFP).
Abdal Hamid Evans, a KasehDia official, said industry players
"want to know about market access, how to increase their sales and
  networking."
He asserted that there are a lot of issues emerging as halal
  goes global.
"The farm-to-fork nature of halal requires a forum where all
of the different elements can get together, where issues can be
  resolved."
Nestle Malaysia, Britain's biggest retailer Tesco and fast
food giant McDonald's are joining experts and regulatory bodies
participating in the forum, which closes on Wednesday, May 10.
The event features interactive sessions that will cover a
variety of relevant topics, with industry leaders presenting papers
covering the business and trade issues that concern the halal
  industry.
  Booming
Khairy Jamaluddin, a leading figure in the ruling National
Front coalition, agreed that discussions should move to the commercial
  aspects of the industry.
"Experience has shown that theological debate as to what
halal is and what isn't can delay the growth of the market considerably,"
he told the opening session on Monday, May 8.
He expects the global halal industry to hit the impressive
  mark of one trillion dollars.
"Our own estimates put the global market value of the halal
food trade at $580 billion annually. If products such as pharmaceuticals,
cosmetics and other services are added in, the combined market value is
believed well in excess of one trillion dollars."
The concept of halal, -- meaning permissible in Arabic -- has
  traditionally been applied to food.
  Muslims should only
  eat meat from
livestock slaughtered by a sharp knife from their necks, and the name of
Allah, the Arabic word for God, must be mentioned.
Now other goods and services can also be certified as halal,
including cosmetics, clothing, pharmaceuticals and financial
  services.
  MIHAS 2006
The third Malaysia International Halal Showcase (MIHAS 2006)
will open Wednesday under the theme "Networking, Consolidating and
  Energizing the Global Halal Market."
"We hope to arrange 2,000 business matching sessions during
the event, of which 80 percent will be in business such as food,
pharmaceuticals and cosmetics and the other 20 percent in general
trading," MIHAS chief executive director Mohd Shukri Abdullahhe told a
  press conference Tuesday.
He said this year's event will see 358 exhibitors, of which
259 are local and 99 foreign, including those from Bosnia, Brunei, China,
Egypt, France, the Netherlands, Turkey, Iran, the United Kingdom and the
  United States.
The five-day event is expected to see the signing of at least
16 agreements each day, according to Malaysia's news agency
  Bernama.
MIHAS 2005 reaped RM217.1 million in immediate sales and
RM12.8 million in sales under negotiation, involving 93 international
  buyers and 753 trade meetings.
Malaysia, a mainly Muslim country seeking to become a "halal
hub", has said it would create a new Halal Industry Development
Corporation to promote its ambitions and help expand the
  industry.
Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said the center will
develop halal standards and certification and procedures, and improve the
skills and abilities of halal producers.
Halal food production zones are already operating or being
built in six Malaysian states, and a sprawling halal distribution hub has
been built at a duty-free shipment zone in southern Johor state, on the
  busy Malacca strait.
  In 2004, Malaysia launched a bi-monthly magazine,
  The Halal
  Journal, as the
first trade and business publication serving the global halal
  marketplace.

[IslamCity] ~*~ What good does reading the Quran do? ~*~

2006-05-12 Thread Ali Rizwan

An old man lived on a farm in the mountains of eastern Kentucky with his young grandson. Each morning Grandpa was up early sitting at the kitchen table reading his Quran . His grandson wanted to be just like him and tried to imitate him in every way he could. One day the grandson asked, "Papa, I try to read the Quraan just like you but I don't understand it, and what I do understand I forget as soon as I close the book. What good does reading the Quran do?" The Grandfather quietly turned from putting coal in the stove and replied, "Take this coal basket down to the river
bring me back a basket of water." The boy did as he was told, but all the water leaked out before he got back to the house. The grandfather laughed said, "You'll have to move a little faster next time," and sent him back to the river with the basket to try again. This time the boy ran faster, but again the basket was empty before he returned home. Out of breath, he told his grandfather that it was impossible to carry water in a basket, and he went to get a bucket instead. The old man said, "I don't want a bucket of water; I want a basket of water. You're just not trying hard enough," and he went out of the door to watch the boy try again. At this point, the boy knew it was impossible, but he
wanted to show his grandfather that even if he ran as fast as he could, the water would leak out before he got back o the house. The boy again dipped the basket into river ran hard, but when he reached his grandfather the basket was again empty. Out of breath, he said, "See Papa, it's useless!" "So you think it is useless?" The old man said, "Look at the basket." The boy looked at the basket and for the first time realized that the basket was different. It had been transformed from a dirtyold coal basket and was now clean, inside and outside. "Son! that's what happens when you read the Holy Quran. You might not understand or remember everything
but when you read it, you will be changed, inside and outside. That's the work of Allah Almighty in our lives"Do share it with others. Regards,

Subject: [islaam] The Ruling on Nasheeds

The Ruling on Nasheeds

Bismillah wal Alhamdulillah wa salaata wa salaam 'ala rasulillah,
assalaamu 'alaikom wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

>From among the most misunderstood rulings is regarding the ruling of Nasheeds
or otherwise called 'Islamic music'. Inshaa Allah i hope to provide some
material on the matter so as to help clear up the misconception that all kinds
of 'islamic music' is permissable, as well as outline the conditions for a nasheed
to be permissable and for the allowance of the use of the Daff.

As in all affairs of the religion, our adherance is to the Quran and the Sunnah,
and in the understanding of the companions. As the trait of the Believer is
that he or she prefers the Truth over his or her desires, i hope that each of
us can read and comprehend on the evidences given on the matter, while putting
aside any of the barriers that will prevent you us from accepting the truth,
whether they be desires, personal preferences, or baseless favourtism of
opinions.

Al-Bukhaari narrated that the Prophet (sulAllahu 'alayhi wassalaam) said: "There will be among my ummah people who
will regard adultery, silk, alcohol and musical instruments as permissible."

This hadeeth indicates that all musical instruments are haraam,
including the daff.

'Abdullaah ibn 'Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: The daff is haraam, stringed
instruments are haraam, drums are haraam and flutes are haraam.
Narrated by al-Bayhaqi, 10/222

But there are some ahaadeeth which indicate that it is
permissible to beat the daff in some circumstances, which are:

Eid, weddings, and when one who has been away
returns.

The evidence is given below.

1 - It was narrated from 'Aa'ishah that Abu Bakr (sulAllahu 'alayhi
wassalaam) entered upon her and there were two girls with her during the days
of Mina beating the daff, and the Prophet (sulAllahu 'alayhi wassalaam) was
covering himself with his garment. Abu Bakr rebuked them, and the Prophet (sulAllahu
'alayhi wassalaam) uncovered his face and said, "Leave them alone, O Abu Bakr,
for these are the days of Eid." That was during the days of Mina. [Narrated
by al-Bukhaari, 944; Muslim, 892 ]

2 - It was narrated
that al-Rubayyi' bint Mu'awwidh ibn 'Afra' said: "After the consummation of my marriage, the Prophet (sulAllahu
'alayhi wassalaam) came and sat on my bed as far from me as you are sitting
now, and our little girls started beating the daff and reciting verses mourning
my father, who had been killed in the battle of Badr. One of them said, 'Among
us is a Prophet who knows what will happen tomorrow.' On that the Prophet said,
'Omit this (saying) and keep on saying the verses which you had been saying
before.'" (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 4852).

3 - It was
narrated that Buraydah said: The Messenger of Allaah (sulAllahu 'alayhi wassalaam)
went out on one of his military campaigns, and when he came back, a black slave
woman came and said, "O Messenger of Allaah, I vowed that if Allaah brought you
back safe and sound, I would beat the daff before you and sing. The Messenger
of Allaah (sulAllahu 'alayhi wassalaam) said, "If you vowed that, then do it,
otherwise do not do it.'" So she started to beat the daff, and Abu Bakr came in
whilst she was doing so. Then 'Ali came in whilst she was beating the daff,
then 'Uthmaan came in whilst she was beating the daff, then 'Umar came in and
she threw the daff beneath her and sat on it. The Messenger of Allaah (sulAllahu
'alayhi wassalaam) said, "The Shaytaan is afraid of you, O 'Umar. I was sitting
and she was beating the daff, then Abu Bakr came in when she was beating the daff;
then 'Ali came in when she was beating the daff; then 'Uthmaan came in when she
was beating the daff, but when you came in, O 'Umar, she put the daff down." [Narrated by al-Tirmidhi,
3690; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Tirmidhi, 2913.]

These ahaadeeth indicate that it is permissible to
beat the daff in these three situations. Apart from that, the principle remains
that it is haraam. Some scholars made the matter broader and
said that it is permissible to beat the daff when a child is born and when he
is circumcised; others take the matter further and say that it is permissible
on all occasions that are a cause for expressing joy, such as the recovery of a
sick person and the like. [See al-Mawsoo'ah al-Fiqhiyyah, 38/169 ] But it is better
to limit ourselves to what was narrated in the text. And
Allaah knows best.

Regarding the playing of the Daff, the correct view
is that it is not permissible to beat the daff except for women. If a man does
that, he is imitating women, which is a major sin.
