[IslamCity] What is sin in Islam?

2006-05-26 Thread adil naveed

What is sin in Islam? by Muhammad Jamaal ad-Deen ‘Abdul-Wahid The Holy Last Messenger (s.a.s.) said:“Righteousness is good morality and sin is that which causes discomfort (or pinches) within your soul and which you dislike people to become informed of.” [Sahih Muslim]Sin is that aspect in a Muslim’s life in which he or she makes effort to abstain from at all costs. Allah warns all of mankind that everything mankind does in this world will be put before us on Yawmul-Qiyaama (The Day of
Resurrection) in Surah al-Zilzal:“And he who does an atom’s weight of good will see it. And he who does an atom’s weight of evil will see it.” [Holy Qur’an, 99:7-8]Allah also warns mankind that the one whose bad deeds (sins) are heavy will be in Hell, as can be found in Surah al-Qari’ah. A Muslim’s strife is to live the life of a believer and separate from the likeness of the sinner, as Allah differentiates the Mu’min (believer) from the fasiq (sinner) in Surah As-Sajdah:“Is he who is a believer like unto him who is a sinner? They are not alike! For those who believe and do righteous works, for them are Gardens of Retreat, a welcome (in reward) for what works they did. And as for those who do evil, their abode is the Fire. Whenever they wish to leave, they will be forced back into it, and it will be said to them: Taste the torment of the Fire which you used to reject.”
[Holy Qur’an, 32:18-20]It is clear that one must steer away from sin and do righteous acts. However uncertainty arises in the mind when referring to the subject of sin such as 1.) the difference between a sin and a mistake, 2.) Shaytaan’s (Satan) role in the commission of a sin, 3.) if one becomes removed from Islam due to committing a sin, and 4.) the major sins. The purpose of this essay is to provide concise answers to such inquiries, inSha’Allah. Question: What is the difference between sin and mistakes? What role does Shaytaan, the accursed one, play in sin? Fault means any action that takes place unintentionally and sin is with intention. For example, Shaytaan put such ideas into the heart of Hazrat Adam (a.s.) to approach the tree. Adam did it and as a result, Allah sent him to the earth. Similarly, Hazrat Yunus (Jonah) committed a fault and he adopted that way prohibited to him according to the
instruction of Allah. Allah says in the Holy Qur’an that it was Shaytaan who put the idea into Hazrat Adam and Hazrat Yunus (a.s.), so there is no doubt that Shaytaan can put these ideas into the hearts of the Nabiyeen to divert their attention from the right way. But the mistakes they commit are only according to the Hikmat of Allah. These mistakes are below the standards of the Nabiyeen, so we can not point it out that they took place according to the Order of Allah. We must say Shaytaan is responsible. All the good things take place from the Kindness of Allah while all of the bad things are due to Shaytaan. The awliya are not free from this was-wâs (evil whispers), but if this was-wâs happens to any wali, as soon as he realizes it, he busies himself in tawba (repentance). But on the other hand, the common people, when they commit a sin, they do not realize it and they do not feel guilty about it. Note: Sins are of three types:
Against Allah. Against brotherhood. Against humanity. In Hadith, Hazrat Anas (r.a.) narrated that Rasulullah (s.a.s.) said Shaytaan travels through the body like blood. Explanation by Imam Al-Bukhari and Imam Muslim: Allah gave full power to Shaytaan to put evil ideas into the hearts of men. If a man does not act upon these ideas, he has passed the worldly examination and will get a high place in Jinnah (Heaven). When we say that the Shaytaan travels through the body like blood, it means not physically but according to his evil ideas or thinking there are things that travel like the human blood. In Hadith Hazrat Imam Abu Hanifah (r.a.) related that the Nabi (s.a.s.) said:“The was-wâs that enters the hearts of my ummah Allah has forgiven, as long as they don’t act upon or voice it.” [Imam Al-Bukhari and Imam Muslim agree on it]Tafsir
(Commentary): Was-wâs is the bad intentions that enters one’s heart. And those good intentions that enter one’s heart is called ilham. The ilham won’t be accepted unless it is accordance with the Holy Qur’an and Hadith. Bad thoughts by a person that is not related to aqeeda (belief), and doesn’t act on them, for him is Maafoo (forgiveness). If vice versa is related to kufr (disbelief), then it will be kufr. And if related to dhal (straying away), then it will be dhalleen. For both of these situations, tawba is fardh (obligatory). If this intention is related to any actions and not aqa’id (belief), and he keeps this intention in his heart, then he is a sinner. Question: Does the commission of sin remove one from Islam? Hazrat Anas bin Malik relates Rasulullah said that three things form the foundation of Al-Islam. 1.) Whosoever says Laa

[IslamCity] Venezuela Deserves the Support of All Those Who Believe in Democracy and Social

2006-05-26 Thread G.Waleed Kavalec

Venezuela Deserves the
Support of All Those Who Believe in Democracy and Social Justice
Welcome to London, President
Chavez!
By KEN LIVINGSTONE
President Hugo Chávez of Venezuela will today become the second head of
state--after the Queen--to be welcomed to London's City Hall. When it comes to
the social transformation taking place in Venezuela, the political
qualifications often necessary in our imperfect world can be set aside. It is
crystal clear on which side right and justice lies. For many years people have
demanded that social progress and democracy go hand in hand, and that is exactly
what is now taking place in Venezuela.
It therefore deserves the unequivocal support of
not only every supporter of social progress but every genuine believer in
democracy in the world.
Venezuela is a state of huge oil wealth that was
hitherto scarcely used to benefit the population. Now, for the first time in a
country of over 25 million people, a functioning health service is being built.
Seventeen million people have been given access to free healthcare for the first
time in their lives. Illiteracy has been eliminated. Fifteen million people have
been given access to food, medicines and other essential products at affordable
prices. A quarter of a million eye operations have been financed to rescue
people from blindness. These are extraordinary practical
achievements.
Little wonder, then, that Chávez and his
supporters have won 10 elections in eight years. These victories were achieved
despite a private media largely controlled by opponents of the government. Yet
Chávez's visit has been met with absurd claims from rightwing activists that he
is some kind of dictator.
The opponents of democracy are those who
orchestrated a coup against Chávez, captured on film in the extraordinary
documentary The Revolution
Will Not Be Televised. It is a film that literally changes lives. By chance,
a TV crew was in the presidential palace when the military coup of April 2002
against Chávez took place. It captured minute by minute the events that
unfolded.
Anti-Chávez gunmen, in league with the coup
organisers, opened fire on a pro-Chávez demonstration. As guns are commonplace
in Venezuela, some in the crowd returned fire. US television stations
manipulated these images by editing out the gunfire aimed at the pro- Chávez
crowd to claim that anti-Chavez demonstrators had been attacked.
A million people took to the streets of Caracas to
demand Chávez's release. The moment when the army deserted the coup leaders and
went over to support the demonstrators is shown on film.
It is a sign of how little David Cameron's
Conservative party has changed that London Tories are boycotting today's meeting
with Chávez. This contrasts, of course, with the Tories' longstanding feting of
the murdering torturer General Augusto Pinochet. To justify their position they
ludicrously compare Chávez to Stalin. Sometimes it is necessary to choose the
lesser of two evils. Britain fought with Stalin against Hitler. But with Chávez
the choice is not difficult at all. He is both carrying out a progressive
programme and doing so through the mandate of the ballot box.
George Bush's refusal to respect the choices of
the Venezuelan people shows that his administration has no real interest in
promoting democracy at all.
Not since the 1973 coup that brought Pinochet to
power have people faced a clearer or more important international choice. In
Venezuela millions are struggling to take their country out of poverty. They are
doing so by means that are among the most democratic in the world. Both are
inspiring.
Today Venezuela is being opposed largely on the
basis of lies. We have to make sure Venezuelans have to face nothing worse. It
is the duty of all people who support progress, justice and democracy to stand
with Venezuela.

[IslamCity] Conflict Between Hadith and Science?

2006-05-26 Thread S A Hannan

Dear members,

Assalamu Alaikum. Please read this question and answer on Conflict Between Hadith and Science?. I personally
feel that one of the major problems relating to Hadith literature will go if a
group of experts ( including Muhaddisun, scientists, Arabic linguists) re check
the Matn of all Hadith ( under the auspises of OIC fiqh academy or such other
body ) and identifies those few Hadith which do not pass the criterion of
Matn checking already established by the Muhaddisun. This will protect the Hadith
literature from external attack and also remove most of the differences among
the Muslims in the matter.Allahu Aa'lam.

Conflict Between Hadith and Science?

  By SheikhAhmadKutty Dr.
  Sano Koutoub Moustapha

  March 30, 2005

  Q:
I know that the Qur'an came from Allah and there is no
dispute about that. My question is about hadith. I was talking to a recent
revert brother and he was talking to me about the book, The Bible, the
Qur’an and the Science by Dr. Maurice Bucaille. The author stated that
the Qur'an has irrefutable scientific evidence and that all the scientific
facts in the Qur'an agree with science but that many hadiths of the
Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) contradicted science.
Please could you clarify how hadiths contradict
  science?
  A:
In response to this question, Sheikh Ahmad
Kutty, a senior lecturer and Islamic scholar at the Islamic Institute
  of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, states:
Your question needs a detailed answer, but I would
  briefly state the following:
Not everything reported as hadith is considered a
hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Hundreds of
scholars have worked diligently to establish a scientific methodology of
sorting and authenticating the traditions that can be safely attributed to
the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). One of the principal
criteria for verifying hadith is that it should not contradict reason or
  empirical facts.
Another criterion is that it must not contradict the
fundamental principles established by the Qur'an and authentic
  Sunnah.
Thirdly, in order for a hadith to be acceptable, it
must have been reported and transmitted through a reliable chain of
transmission where every link is known and reliable.
Having said this, we must guard against dismissing
certain traditions which may appear to be contradicting reason while on a
deeper study it would be found that it is our interpretation that is
wrong, not the hadith itself. This often happens in regards to matters
where human reason cannot operate, namely, that which is related to
matters of ghayb (Unseen). As believers, we must believe that this
area of reality is not accessible to reason or empirical knowledge. The
only avenue for this knowledge is revelation from Allah. The Prophet
(peace and blessings be upon him) received inspirations other than the
Qur'an regarding such matters, which is often related in the
  Hadith.
So do not rush to conclude that all hadiths are
fabricated. And also we must never attribute falsehood to the Prophet
(peace and blessings be upon him). By having doubt about the Prophet
(peace and blessings be upon him) we are rejecting the entire Qur'an as
  well.
So, pray to Allah to make your heart steadfast on the
  right religion.
Dr. Sano Koutoub Moustapha, professor of Fiqh and Its Principles, International
  Islamic University, Malaysia, adds:
I do thank the questioner, and pray to Allah to guide
all of us and strengthen our iman.
It is known that there are two types of revelation:
the first one is called al-wahyu az-zahir, meaning the clear and
direct revelation; and the second is called al-wahyu al-batin,
meaning the hidden and indirect revelation. The first one refers to the
glorious Qur'an, while the second one refers to the Sunnah of the Prophet
(peace and blessings be upon him). As Muslims we are obliged to believe in
both, based on many verses in the Qur'an such as Al-Baqarah 32, Al-Ma’idah
92, Al `Imran 59, et cetera. Accordingly, no belief is considered
acceptable before Allah if it is based on separation between these two
  types of revelation.
However, there are differences between them in terms
of their authenticity and authority. The whole Qur'an is known to be
definitive and free from falsification and forgery, while the Sunnah is
divided into definitive and speculative. The former is authentic and free
from any falsification, while the latter has been subject to falsification
  and

"I will lose 10 lbs"; "I will exercise more"; "I will spend my money more carefully" - these are just some examples of the kind of resolutions many of us make at various time markers in our lives, most notably, at the beginning of a new year. But for most Muslims, while the goals we set are usually praiseworthy, few, if any, are aimed at contributing to Islam on a community level. We might, for instance, aim to read more Islamic books or give more in
charity. But we wouldn't intend to teach at the local weekend Islamic school and share our knowledge or devote our time, not just our money, to a Masjid building project. It's time to focus not just on our own personal development. We've got to start considering what we can do for Islam in our community and for the Ummah in general. Below are 6 ideas that you can use or simply check out to jump start your own thinking and planning process to develop resolutions. 1. Learn about conflict resolution Remember the fights in the Masjid? Or the wonderful active sister who left the Masjid because of a dispute with the Board of Directors? What about the brother who was a great teacher at the Islamic school until the administration decided to reduce his salary without informing him well in advance? These are all cases where conflict
resolution could have come in handy. There is a crying need for Muslims who can negotiate and mediate amongst Muslims. This is a skill every Muslim community needs to invest in. It's also a skill you should consider developing. You could do a degree in conflict resolution, but you don't have to go that far. You can attend seminars and/or one-day classes. Business schools may offer a course a few weeks long in conflict resolution. Consider gaining and taking these skills to the Masjid and to your local Islamic center. 2. Increase your time for the Masjid It's easy to drop a couple of dollars in a Masjid donation box, but it's not so easy to devote a couple of hours every few weeks to Dawa to the Masjid's neighbors. When was the last time your Masjid had an open house? When were your non Muslim friends invited to attend a party in the
Masjid? While everyone in Masjids is ready to work on a Masjid building or a school project, there are very few who are willing to spare time for neighborhood relations or media communication. Many times there is no one available to properly handle inquires left on the Masjid's answering machine. Time is our greatest resource, not money. Devote yours to causes that deserve it. Also remember that when you are giving time to the Masjid, your input and ideas are also more likely to be considered by its administration. 3. Make your Muslim organizations more open to feedback and accountability Have things been running the same way for years at your local Islamic center? You know, disorganized, or closed off, with a couple of people having the only say in all matters? Many, many Masjids and Islamic centers lack management and
organizational skills. They are run by an elite group of people who make all of the decisions without proper consultation with the community. They are also not held accountable for what they do or how the money coming into the Masjid or organization is spent. This doesn't mean that everything they are doing is wrong. But there needs to be a more transparent and open system that will benefit all Muslims in the community, the male and the female, the young and the old, the immigrant and the Muslim

[IslamCity] Muslim Beard

2006-05-26 Thread Abdeen

The Blessed Beard... Grow it, what's so hard to understand?
Commentary by Islam.tc

Muslims are overcome with western influence in their lives and it's easy to forget, nay, neglect the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him). Little do these Muslims realize the magnitude of their actions in imitating Kufaar (see Hadith section). Hopefully the information presented herein will enlighten those. And then there are others who claim that the matters concerning beards is a "little" issue not worthy of mention nor practice. To them I say get off the denial bandwagon, you're a Muslim! Follow the Prophet (Peace be upon him) in all aspects of life, for he was the best of examples. I couldn't tell you how many times I've mistaken a Muslim brother (outside of the Masjid) for a kaafir on account of his clean-shaven, well oiled, face. How can I say "Assalaamu Alaikum Brother!" when I do not know if he is a Muslim. Yet that very brother then wonders why he was ignored! Sure, he can tell if others are Muslim on account of their beard, but what about himself? From one brother to another, I say: "Grow a beard, then, since it also promotes Brotherhood in the real world. Stand with your Brothers, be one. We know you are handsome without it (a beard), but who cares? What matters is how Allah (S.W.T.) sees you. And when you do grow a beard, don't mock the Sunnah, please grow it correctly, i.e. FIST LENGTH. That is the prescribed length and no shorter (see Hadeeth section)..." Peace.

DEFINITION OF A BEARD: (Another version)
Shaykh ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allah preserve him) said: The definition of the beard as stated by the scholars of (Arabic) language is: the hair of the face, jawbone and cheeks, in the sense that all the hair on the cheeks, jawbone and chin is part of the beard and removing any of it is counted as a sin, because the Messenger (peace aand blessings of Allah b e upon him) said: “Let your beards grow,” “Leave your beards alone,” “Let your beards increase.
,” Let your beards be full,”. This indicates that it is not permissible to remove anything from the beard. But the sin may vary in degree – shaving the beard is worse than shortening it, because it is a more obvious contradiction of the Sunnah.
And Allah knows best.

50:24 - (The sentence will be:) "Throw throw into Hell every contumacious Rejector (of Allah)! 4960
50:25 - "Who forbade what was good transgressed all bounds cast doubts and suspicions;
51:10 - Woe to the falsehood-mongers
51:11- Those who (flounder) heedless in a flood of confusion: 4996
51:54 - So turn away from them: not thine is the blame. 5031
51:50 –Hasten ye then (at once) to Allah:I am from Him a warner to you clear and open!
When an adulterer is committing adultery , he is not a Muslim (believer) The Mashaa’ikh have explained that at the time of adultery the noor of imaan is separated from the adulterer. After he has finished this sinful act the Imaan returns into a Muslim.
The shaving of the Beard is such an act that it is continuous, and is exhibited all the time. When performing salaat too, this sin remains with him. Similarly during Sown (fast) Hajj and all ;other ibaadaat this sinful act accompanies him.
Ibn Asaakir and others have reported that Hassan relates that Rasulullah – Peace be upon him said: “There were ten such habits amongst the people of Loot A.S. which were the cause of their destruction. Amongst these habits is listed the shaving of the Beard and the lengthening of the Mousta”.
After death in the grave we will first be shown the countenance of Rasulullah – Peace be upon him.
Those will be moments of regret and utter hopelessness Allah forbid, if at such a time of need, and with hope that Rasulullah – Peace be upon him – intercede on one’s behalf, he sees a face and an appearance that is not according to his Sunnat , and he turns his face away ! How unfortunate this will be ?
Hadith No:3
How severe is this warning. Those with long moustaches regard themselves as members of the elite and register themselves as Muslims in official records, but Rasulullah – Peace be upon him – refuses to accept them as members of his group. Wasthila R.A. relates that Rasulullah – Peace be upon him – said: “Whoever does not cut his moustache is not of us”.

The Hadith categorically states that the beard should be lengthened and the moustache cut. This is related both in Bukhari and Muslim. Rasulullah – Peace be upon him – has sternly commanded this to his followers.
Wherever Rasulullah – Peace be upon him - gives a command then that act becomes compulsory ( Waajib) , and to neglect this Waajib command is totally prohibited, (Haram) . Thus it is forbidden (Haraam) to shave the beard and keep long moustaches. This is further elaborated in another Hadith in which Rasulullah –Peace be upon him - has said “ whosoever does not cut his moustache is not of our group. This has been related by Ahmad, Tirmizi and Nasa’ee.
In Ibn Dawood it is mentioned thus: We used to allow our

[IslamCity] QUDSI HADITH #1 - ALLAH'S MERCY PREVAILS OVER HIS WRATH!

2006-05-26 Thread Saba Khan

In the Name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most
Merciful
Forty Hadith Qudsi
Introduction
The following is a collection of 40 Hadith Qudsi. But
what is Hadith
Qudsi and how do they differ from other Hadith? The
following
discussion is given in the introduction to the book
titled Forty
Hadith Qudsi published by: Revival of Islamic
Heritage Society,
Islamic Translation Center, P.O.Box 38130, Aldahieh,
Kuwait.

Hadith Qudsi are the sayings of the Prophet Muhammad
(Peace and
Blessings of Allah be upon him) as revealed to him by
the Almighty
Allah. Hadith Qudsi (or Sacred Hadith) are so named
because, unlike
the majority of Hadith which are Prophetic Hadith,
their authority
(Sanad) is traced back not to the Prophet but to the
Almighty.

Among the many definitions given by the early scholars
to Sacred
Hadith is that of as-Sayyid ash-Sharif al-Jurjani
(died in 816 A.H.)
in his lexicon At-Tarifat where he says: A Sacred
Hadith is, as to
the meaning, from Allah the Almighty; as to the
wording, it is from
the messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). It is that
which Allah
the Almighty has communicated to His Prophet through
revelation or
in dream, and he, peace be upon him, has communicated
it in his own
words. Thus Qur'an is superior to it because, besides
being
revealed, it is His wording.

Hadith Qudsi 1:

On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased
with him),
who said that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon
him) said:

When Allah decreed the Creation He pledged Himself by
writing in His
book which is laid down with Him: My mercy prevails
over my wrath.

It was related by Muslim (also by al-Bukhari,
an-Nasa'i and Ibn
Majah).

{Invite (mankind, O Muhammad ) to the Way of your Lord (i.e. Islam) with wisdom (i.e. with the Divine Inspiration and the Qur'an) and fair preaching, and argue with them in a way that is better. Truly, your Lord knows best who has gone astray from His Path, and He is the Best Aware of those who are guided.} (Holy Quran-16:125)

{And who is better in speech than he who [says: My Lord is Allah (believes in His Oneness), and then stands straight (acts upon His Order), and] invites (men) to Allah's (Islamic Monotheism), and does righteous deeds, and says: I am one of the Muslims.} (Holy Quran-41:33)

The prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: By Allah, if Allah guides one person by you, it is better for you than the best types of camels. [al-Bukhaaree, Muslim]

The prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) also said, Whoever calls to guidance will have a reward similar to the reward of the one who follows him, without the reward of either of them being lessened at all. [Muslim, Ahmad, Aboo Daawood, an-Nasaa'ee, at-Tirmidhee, Ibn Maajah]
