Question:
How can we reconcile between these two aayahs (interpretation of the meanings):
Verily, Allaah forgives not that partners should be set up with Him (in
worship), but He forgives except that (anything else) to whom He wills
[al-Nisa' 4:48] and And verily, I am indeed forgiving to him who repents,
believes (in My Oneness, and associates none in worship with Me) and does
righteous good deeds, and then remains constant in doing them (till his death)
[Ta-Ha 20:82]
Is there any contradiction between them?
Answer:
Praise be to Allaah. There is no contradiction between them. The first aayah
refers to one who dies in shirk (associating others with Allaah) without having
repented from it. He will not be forgiven and his abode will be Hell, as Allaah
says (interpretation of the meanings):
Verily, whosoever sets up partners (in worship) with Allaah, then Allaah has
forbidden Paradise to him, and the Fire will be his abode. And for the
Zaalimoon (polytheists and wrongdoers) there are no helpers [al-Maa'idah 5:72]
But if they had joined in worship others with Allaah, all that they used to do
would have been of no benefit to them [al-An'aam 6:88]
And there are many similar aayahs. The second aayah _ And verily, I am indeed
forgiving to him who repents, believes (in My Oneness, and associates none in
worship with Me) and does righteous good deeds, and then remains constant in
doing them (till his death) [Ta-Ha 20:82 _ interpretation of the meaning] _
refers to those who repent.
Similarly Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): Say: O `Ibaadi (My
slaves) who have transgressed against themselves (by committing evil deeds and
sins)! Despair not of the Mercy of Allaah, verily, Allaah forgives all sins.
Truly, He is OftForgiving, Most Merciful [al-Zumar 39:53] The scholars are
agreed that this verse refers to those who have repented. And Allaah is the
Source of strength.

The prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: By Allah, if
Allah guides one person by you, it is better for you than the best types of
camels. [al-Bukhaaree, Muslim]
The prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) also said, Whoever
calls to guidance will have a reward similar to the reward of the one who
follows him, without the reward of either of them being lessened at all.

(Bukhari and Muslim) encourages adoration of graves similar in spirit to the adoration of idols. Because of this report it is not pemmissible to build mosques over graves. Besides, the Prophet, peace be upon him, said, May Allah curse the Jews who tumed the graves of their prophets into places of worship, in order to wam others against pursuing a similar course. (Muslim and Bukhari) 'Aishah said: The only reason the grave of Allah's Messenger, peace be upon him, was not made prominent was to stop people from tuming it into a mosque. Designating certain graves as places of prayers is similar to adoring idols and seeking their pleasure. The worship of idols started with the adoration of the dead, making images of them, touching them, and offering prayers at their graves. (The commentator on this said: It points to what Bukhari narrated from Ibn Abbas conceming the reason why the people of Noah worshipped idols. They were known as Wadd, Sawa', Yaghuth, Ya'uq, and Nasr. These were pious people of whom they made images in order to remember them after their death and imitate them. Due to the lack of knowledge that became prevalent among the people, Satan made it appear beautiful to worship their images and likenesses, and to honor them, wipe over them, and approach them. Wiping them is passing one's hand over them to invoke their blessing and intercession. The same was done to the graves of nghteous people. This practice was initiated by idolaters, and then passed on to Jews and Christians and then to Muslims. Such objects are equivalent to idols.) This press conference included Abdul Moneim Abdul Maqsoud, the coordinator of the defense panel of the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) leaders referred to the military tribunal, in addition to a huge foreign and local media presence. Clark was prevented on Sunday from attending the twenty sixth session of the military tribunal and he was prevented also from attending the third session, triggering a state of anger among families of the MB detained leaders and human rights activists. Clark said that he was detained at Cairo Airport for three hours which were like a whole day. What happened to me is embarrassing to the Egyptian government, said Clark , adding that he traveled to countries across five continents to monitor political trials there but he wasnt neither prevented from attending trials nor denied access to the country. He lamented that the Egyptian security authorities prevented him along with other monitors from supervising the sessions, confirming that such a prevention is a contravention to standards of a fair trial. A fair trial must be public and neutral. He called on the Egyptian regime abide by human rights conventions in which it is a signatory in 1984. These charters give any citizen the right to have a neutral, independent and fair trial. Clark said that the Egyptian government violates these charters and its brazen injustice against the Muslim Brotherhood is so clear. Clark cited an example of justice in his country, a controversial case involving a charity helping the Palestinian poor as US authorities closed it for more than seven years accusing it of money laundry. However, the court eventually issued its ruling clearing this charity of the past charges and acquitting it. Clark said this trial is politically motivated. He declared that it is involving the Muslim Brotherhood to prevent it from maintaining its services to the society. He also raise his eyebrows how up to 14 university professors are among those referred to the military tribunal, saying university professors should be at the university, not in prison. Acknowledging that he knows that president Mubarak was the one who referred this case to the military trial, Clark confirmed that the trial is an international scandal and said that the course of this trial reflects how the government and institutions in Egypt are run. All the world is currently seeing Egypt as a military dictatorship ruled by juntas. Asked what he did after returning to the United States from his last visit to Egypt , he said that he held a press conference in the US Press Center opposite to the White House and participated in a number of various activities and seminars to make the case known to the public. He said also that the United States is following up the case with concern. A journalist asked him about the US attitude towards the case, and Clark said that the Muslim Brotherhood is not listed as a terrorist group, but Bush sees that Islamists ascension to power as a danger. However, Clark said he does not have any clear cut information about any direct intervention from Bush regarding detaining the Muslim Brotherhood leaders and referring them to the military justice. Asked about his predictions regarding the future of the case, Clark said that he is optimistic and he hopes that the military tribunal will eventually issue a ruling that it isnt competent to see the case and clear the accused especially after the civil justice acquitted them. Its worth mentioning that the Egyptian security authorities prevented Clark from the attending the third session and the 26th session, along with other international monitors including: British journalist Yvonne Ridley, Sir Ivan Lawrence, the legal advisor of Queen of England, and the British lawyer Ali Azhar, the chairman of International Justice Organization, and Jordanian Samih Kharis, the delegate of the Amnesty International. US government humiliated as jury refuses to convict Muslims accused of financing terrorism By a correspondent in Washington The US government suffered a stunning defeat on October 21 when a court in Dallas, Texas, refused to convict officials of the Holy Land Foundation (HLF) charity despite a long government campaign against them. The HLF was shut down in December 2001 amid allegations that it was supporting terrorism and had links with Hamas, the Islamic resistance movement in Palestine. In the highly charged atmosphere after September 2001, every Muslim and every Muslim organisation in the US was suspect. The Dallas-based Holy Land Foundation in particular was targeted because it had been involved in supporting Palestinian widows and orphans, supplying them with food, clothing and medicine. The governments humiliation can be gauged from the fact that not a single guilty verdict was delivered in the long list of 197 charges brought by the prosecution against officials of the HLF. Although the case was declared a mistrial because jurors were deadlocked on some charges after 19 days of deliberation, on the most serious charges, alleging the Foundations material support for terrorism, the jurors handed down a clear not guilty verdict. The Dallas mistrial verdict followed a similar dismissal of terror-financing charges in trials in Chicago and Florida. I thought they were not guilty across the board, juror William Neal, a 33-year-old art director from Dallas, was quoted by the Associated Press as saying after the verdict. The case was strung together with macaroni noodles. There was so little evidence, said Neal. Here is why. The government conceded that while the HLF provided assistance only to real charitable organisations and persons in need in Palestine, it nonetheless spun a fantastic tale that in so doing, the American charity freed Hamas funds from charitable work in Palestine to enable it to direct its resources to terrorism-related activities. However, it failed to provide any credible evidence of conspiracy or links between HLF officials and Hamas. Stringing the case together with macaroni noodles failed to impress the jurors. On October 18 the jury returned a sealed verdict that did not include a single guilty verdict on any of the 197 charges. How the case was declared a mistrial is another story. When the jury delivered its verdict the judge was out of town, so its announcement had to await his return on October 22. By then, a few jurors had apparently changed their mindsor were persuaded to do so. Thus when the verdict was read and the jury polled, three jurors contested the unanimous nature of the verdict. At this point, the judge ordered them to deliberate further. After several hours, 11 of the 12 jurors concurred with the original verdict but one still did not, thus causing the judge to declare a mistrial. Most of the jurors said that the government should not re-try the case, but prosecutors have said that they will ask for a new trial. Whether they will actually go for a new trial, and if so whether the outcome will be any different, is difficult to predict, but one point is clear: the witch-hunt of Muslims in the US is far from over. Along with the trial of HLF officials, the US justice department has named 306 individuals and organisations as un-indicted co-conspirators in the case. The list includes such organisations as the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA), its financial wing, the North American Islamic Trust (NAIT), and the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR). The designation of individuals and organisations as un-indicted co-conspirators leaves them with no legal remedy to restore their reputation. This is stigmatisation and being tarred with guilt merely by association and with others who might be guilty, not with who definitely are guilty, at that. This is clearly part of an extensive campaign of intimidation and harassment of Muslims and their organisations in the US. For instance, it is common for agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to park their clearly marked cars outside mosques during Friday prayers. They also routinely take down peoples license-plate numbers while other agents provocatively videotape Muslims going into or out of mosques. Such fear-mongering has given license to such hate-spewing activities as those underway on university campuses under the insulting title Islamo-Fascist Awareness Week. Immediately after the events of September 2001, more than 1,200 Muslims were arrested in various parts of the US and accused of supporting terrorism. This mass hysteria led to the brutal treatment of many Muslims, some of whom were beaten up and threatened with execution; others were given the choice between spending years in jail or being deported on minor immigration infractions.
