HARVARD, Massachusetts A study on the longer-term effect of participating in the Islamic pilgrimage found that Muslims communities have become more open in many ways after the Hajj experience.The study, published by Harvards Kennedy School of Government, says that hajj Muslim pilgrimage - urges equality and harmony. It increases belief in equality and harmony among ethnic groups and Islamic sects and leads to more favorable attitudes toward women, including greater acceptance of female education and employment, the study found. Entitled Estimating the Impact of the Haj: Religion and Tolerance in Islams Global Gathering, the study also found that the hajj experience promotes peaceful coexistence. Increased unity within the Islamic world is not accompanied by antipathy toward non-Muslims, stressed the Harvard study, adding that Hajjis show increased belief in peace, and in equality and harmony among adherents of different religions. The study, which was based on data from over 1,600 applicants to Pakistans hajj visa allocation lottery in 2006, can be downloaded here. Pilgrim accounts stress that the Hajj leads to a feeling of unity with fellow Muslims, but outsiders have sometimes feared that this could be accompanied by antipathy toward non-Muslims. We find that participation in the Hajj increases observance of global Islamic practices such as prayer and fasting while decreasing participation in localized practices and beliefs such as the use of amulets and dowry. It increases belief in equality and harmony among ethnic groups and Islamic sects and leads to more favorable attitudes toward women, including greater acceptance of female education and employment. He was talking to newsmen at Tehran airport after reaching here Saturday on a four day official visit to attend a 3-day international conference, says a message received here from JI spokesman in Tehran. According to JI spokesman, Qazi Hussain Ahmad is leading a 3-member delegation comprising JI director foreign affairs abdul Ghaffar Aziz and JI information secretary Amirul Azim. He has been invited by the head of Iranian International Institute for the Reconciliation among Islamic sects, Ayatollah Mohammad Ali Al Taskheeri in the conference titled World Unity Conference. Qazi Hussain Ahmad said that if America attacked Iran then Pakistani nation will fight along side their Muslim Irani brothers. He also urged upon the leaderships of Pakistan and Iran to fight global challenges to Muslim Ummah by forging unity among their ranks, and also raise an effective voice in the world community for realization of Muslim rights. Qazi said Pak-Iran gas pipeline is beneficial for both countries, and no foreign pressure should be accepted on the issue. Qazi also praised the Iranian offer to provide power to Pakistan. Qazi emphasized that Iranian peaceful nuclear energy program should continue for all practical purposes. He also saluted Iranian nation and government for backing and supporting the oppressed Palestinian Muslims. Qazi emphasized that American politics is generating failures all over the world and is facing the worst kind of defeat in Iraq and Afghanistan. While on the other hand, American pet Israel has also failed to defeat the spirits of unarmed Palestinians. Qazi emphasized the need for greater Muslim unity to combat all anti Muslim colonist powers including America. He expressed hopes that Global Unity Conference will prove to be an important milestone in this regard. Qazi asked other Muslim rulers to display the same spirit to forge unity in their ranks, reactivate OIC in real sense and defeat the enemy with their unity.

To brush the teeth with a miswaak, 4. sleep on the right hand side. 5. Sleep with the right palm under the right cheek. 6. Keep the knees slightly bent when sleeping. General Advice One must cut one's nails hairs of the pubic region within every forty days . Males must wear the pants above the ankles. Females should ensure that their lower garment covers their ankles To announce ones arrival by coughing, greeting, etc. even though it may be your own house(A means for avoiding any fear.) If it did not place an excessive burden upon my community, I would command them to clean their teeth with miswak [a tooth stick] before each of the five daily prayers. 'Disease' he said, 'is not the wrath of God, because Prophets also suffered great pains, much greater than ordinary people. Victims of epidemics like Cholera and Plague are martyrs.' Resort to Medicine first and then pray to God to get rid of the diseases.
Bismillah [IslamCity] RELIGION AND POVERTY
I got an invitation from Union Theological Seminar, New York to participate in a seminar on 'Religion and Poverty' whose convener was Paul Knitter on the occasion of his installation as the Dean of the Seminary, a noted scholar in his field, yet very humble person with pleasant personality. I welcomed this opportunity to speak on this subject on which I had written a great deal in the past under the title Liberation Theology in Islam. The seminar was from 18 to 21 February. The very first day we visited a union office to understand issues of poverty in USA. It was indeed moving to see so much poverty in the land of plenty. It was all along known that there is poverty in the USA but it was different thing to experience it in the field. We were taken to an office of association of restaurant workers. We were told more than 40,000 restaurant workers were rendered unemployed when the two trade towers collapsed on 9/11 in which about three thousand people were killed. We could hardly imagine that such a huge work force was rendered unemployed on 9/11 as entire focus was on those killed and on politics of terror and foreign policy of USA. No one ever referred once to woes of these restaurant workers who lost their jobs and continue to suffer till today in various ways. No one was ready to employ them firstly because they were unionized and secondly because many of them had no documents required by immigration. For years they continued to suffer until they came together to form their own association for their survival. We listened to the story of their suffering and survival and drew inspiration. Many of these workers, as pointed out, are those who have migrated from other countries, some without valid documents. They are exploited most because of their legal vulnerability. It is for this reason that Qur'an considers ibn al-sabil (travelers, strangers) among the weak and on par with poor and needy and apportions a part of zakat (tithe) for this category. Thus a correct Islamic attitude can help this most vulnerable section in USA and other countries. Same day the seminar began on 'Religion and Poverty. Resource persons from Islam, Christianity, Buddhism and Hinduism took part in the debate. Speaking from Islamic viewpoint I spoke on Qur'an and its various verses deeply committed to eradication of poverty. Mecca, as I have pointed out in my writings on liberation theology, was passing through period of deep social malaise which disturbed Muhammad, the prophet of Islam (PBUH). This social malaise was caused by extreme wealth on one side (from Meccan standards of those days), and extreme poverty, on the other. Interestingly, the Qur'an uses the word miskeen for poor and needy. Its root is sakana (he remained motionless) and a needy miskeen is one who is rendered immobilized due to state of helplessness. Thus Qur'an shows great sympathy with masakeen, the poor and needy. In Mecca the rich traders were neglecting these sections of society including orphans and widows and there was no state structure to bring about proper distribution of wealth through taxation and no will, on the part of the rich merchants to set apart a part of their wealth to mitigate the misery of these suffering sections. Also, tribal norms were being destroyed by the greed of wealthy merchants. The Prophet of Islam (PBUH) was seriously disturbed by this state of affairs in Mecca. He could not tolerate this acute suffering of the poor, needy and orphans and widows in that international financial centre Mecca. He was extremely sensitive soul. He himself had suffered poverty in his childhood. He came from a respectable family of clan of Hashim but had very little means of survival. He was an orphan as his parents had died in his early childhood and was brought up by his grand father and then by his uncle. It is important to note that Allah chose Muhammad (PBUH), a poor, an orphan, for the prophet-hood. He did not choose a wealth or influential person of Meccan society for spreading His Mission. That is why the rich merchants of Mecca held him in contempt that a poor orphan is claiming to be the prophet of Allah. They thought it is below their high position to submit to a poor orphan who hardly had means of survival. The message of Allah was clear: poor has as much human dignity and capable of spreading Allah's mission as anyone. Allah does not necessarily choose wealthy and socially influential for His mission. Thus prophet-hood was destined for the poor and poverty is a social condition, not a permanent status. Muhammad (PBUH) also showed to the world how one can maintain ones dignity despite straitened economic condition. He never adopted 'high style' of life even when able to due to his changed condition in Madina. They cite severe flaws in the justice system and the treatment of racial minorities and immigrants. More Americans are being imprisoned and race is clearly a factor, says the report. A black male in the United States has a one in three chance of being imprisoned, while a white male has only a one in 17 chance. The US was founded on principles of equality and justice, but several reports and rights groups accuse today's America or failing to live up to its own standards. A December report of the US Human Rights Network, a coalition of 250 civic groups, concluded that America has an abysmal record of racial discrimination with minorities, including Muslims, unfairly treated in a range of areas. Last year, thousands of Afro-Americans marched through the state of Louisiana to protest racial injustice in US courts. *War on Terror* The Freedom House report takes issue with civil liberties curbs after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Certain US policies present genuine threats to the individual rights of American and foreign citizens caught up in the war on terrorism, it says. The pro-democracy group cites the controversial Patriot Act, warrantless wiretaps, torture and extraordinary rendition, as some of the violations of civil liberties in post 9/11 America. Those people, who do not check the aqidah of their leaders, just follow them mostly in the manner of blind taqlid. This judgement includes the ones who call themselves Hizbollah and their sub-groups. There are people around who has the Hizbollah manhaj and praise the revolution in Iran and the leaders of the revolution such as Humayni, Shariati, Mutaharri, Tabatabai, Beheshti etc. There are also others who name themselves ahl-sunnah who also praise the revolution and the leaders of the revolution. And there is the third group of so-called jihaadis, (e.g Abu Basir) which compile books regarding the kufr shirk in the Shiite beliefs and also books regarding iman, kufr, taghout; after all they do say the Shiite leaders and the mullahs are kafir however, they also say the society consists of ignorant people who has an excuse of ignorance which is a barrier to takfir. Those who praise the revolution and the leaders of the revolution do not show any interest in the character of the revolution and the aqidah of the revolutionist leaders. Whereas RasulAllah (saw) said: A person is likely to follow the faith of his friend, so look whom you befriend. Salaam No matter what happens there, it is incumbent upon us to cooperate and help the local authorities, regardless of our ethnic or political differences. These are sacred grounds and the meaning of SACRED (Haram) means there should be no fighting or arguing upon this land. Al-Dahlawi, however, pointed out that low-income people, including pilgrims, would find it difficult to get accommodation close to the Haram after the demolitions. There is plenty of space for the poor to sit and lay down and rest around the Haram and the Yard outside. People should not treat these grounds as vacation sites and unfortunately both the poor and the rich they mistreat these grounds like a regular park. You do not go there to relax and eat and drink, you go there to remember Allah and Messenger. I ask Allah to guide the Suadi authorities and the local merchants to treat these lands with care and caress that they deserve and may Allah reward them for their good and forgive their evil. Some have got more than SR100 million, he added. Last year, the Presidency for the Two Holy Mosques Affairs implemented several utility and service projects at a cost of SR1.2 billion. Property Prices to Soar Due to Grand Mosque Expansion JEDDAH, 28 January 2008 The recent announcement to expand the north and northwestern courtyards of the Grand Mosque in Makkah is dramatically increasing real estate prices in the central area of the holy city with businessmen and analysts expecting prices to exceed SR1 million per square meter. Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah approved the new expansion project earlier this month. The approval includes the acquisition of land and other properties, covering an area of 300,000 square meters. Special committees have begun estimating the value of real estate in the area and as many as 1,000 properties in the Shamiya and Shubaika areas will be demolished as part of the expansion project. The government has also allocated some SR6 billion to be paid in compensation for properties. Sources said the demolition of old buildings in the area would begin on March 9. The project will change the face of Makkah with many families, who have been living in the area for several years, forced to find accommodation in other places. Shamiya and Shubaika, next to the massive prayer complex, are situated in one of the most expensive pieces of real estate in the world. Analysts said land prices in the area would go up astronomically after the acquisition. Al-Sharief Mansour Abu Rayash, chairman of the Real Estate Committee at the Makkah Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said the announcement about the expansion had already increased prices to SR250,000 per square meter in some areas. He expects prices would shoot up to SR1 million as a result of growing projects. Abu Rayash, who is on the committee for the evaluation of real estate for acquisition, said the panel would consider the distance of the property from the mosque. The closer the property, the higher its price, he said. Hani Al-Amri, a real estate analyst, said owners of hotels, furnished villas and other properties in Shamiya, Marwah, Raquba and Jabal Al-Kaaba areas would demand high prices in compensation because of their proximity to the Grand Mosque.
