UK firm blasted for arming Israeli military

A British company's links to the Israeli military come under scrutiny, as
pressure mounts on the government to curb arms sales to Tel Aviv.
UAV Engines, of Lichfield, Staffordshire, (known as UEL) is a world leading
drone engine manufacturer that is owned by the Israel drone company Silver
Arrow, which in turn, is a subsidiary of the Israeli defense contractor Elbit
Systems. reported.
According to The Guardian, one of UEL's rotary Wankel engines is used in
Elbit's Hermes 450 drone, which carries out surveillance and targeting
operations for Israel's F-16 fighters in the current offensive against Gaza.
Reliable military news journals and Elbit's own website suggest that the
Lichfield factory produces engines for the Hermes, despite denials by Elbit's
head of corporate communications, Dalia Rosen.
UEL engines are provided to the British UAV programs and to other
international customers, not to Hermes 450 in the service of the IDF [Israeli
military], she said, rejecting all references given in support of the
information.
Elbite denies the sales although arms sales records indicate that the export
of 'components for unmanned aerial vehicles' to Israel has been authorized by
the UK government.
Recently, many right groups and political figures have urged the UK government
to stop the export of weapons to Israel, as the regime's deadly attacks
continue in the Gaza Strip, in violation of a UN Security Council resolution.
Last week, over a hundred lawmakers, from Britain's three main parties, issued
a statement, calling Israel's military operation in the Gaza Strip as an
outrage that should not be allowed by the international community, and urging
an embargo on the supply of military equipment to both sides.
Campaigners against the arms trade also said that the sales must stop, citing
the latest Foreign Office annual report on human rights, which raised 'concerns
over whether Israel's use of lethal force has always been justifiable.'
We have been particularly concerned that, in the course of Israeli Defence
Forces operations, too little effort has been made to avoid civilian
casualties. We are extremely concerned by the humanitarian situation in Gaza
and remain committed to supporting the Palestinian people.
In a soon to be released report, Amnesty International has also urged the
British government to stop selling weapons to Israel.
The UK should suspend all arms exports to Israel, including indirect exports
via other countries and the sale of military components, until there is no
longer a substantial risk that such equipment will be used for serious
violations of human rights or international humanitarian law, says the UK
campaigns director for Amnesty International Tim Hancock.
During the 17-days Israeli military operations in the Gaza Strip, over 900
Palestinians have lost their lives, while another 4080 have been wounded.
According to Hamas records, 33 Israeli soldiers have also been killed.

Advertiser Military Writer -Pearl Harbor:Nuclear Sub HubLetter From CEO To Employees Two-thirds of the Navy's new Virginia-class submarines initially will be based at Pearl Harbor, making Hawai'i the main hub for the advanced attack submarines, Navy officials said yesterday. The Navy plans to build 30 of the nuclear submarines, which cost up to $2.5 billion apiece, carry torpedoes and missiles, and can drop off commandos close to shore. The Navy isn't releasing the exact number or arrival schedule for subs coming to Pearl Harbor beyond the USS Hawaii, expected in late June, and the USS Texas, scheduled to arrive in late October or early November. U.S. Sen. Daniel K. Inouye, D-Hawai'i, previously has said the USS North Carolina also will be homeported here. The Navy revealed the Virginia-class submarine distribution information yesterday at an annual military update for the Hawai'i business community. Capt. W. Scott Gureck, a spokesman for the U.S. Pacific Fleet, said Virginia-class submarines initially will be homeported in Groton, Conn., and at Pearl Harbor. At least four that are in active service have operated temporarily out of the East Coast. The 2006 Quadrennial Defense Review, a 20-year planning roadmap for the military, called for 60 percent of attack submarines to be based in the Pacific and 40 percent in the Atlantic. The initial (Virginia-class) homeporting will indeed be at Groton and Pearl Harbor, but eventually they will be everywhere we currently have Los Angeles-class (subs), Gureck said. It's just from a parts standpoint and maintenance standpoint, you don't want to put a couple Virginias in all the locations. You want to put them where you have critical mass. The overall number of attack submarines at Pearl Harbor — about 15 — will not change, Gureck said. The new Virginia class will replace existing Los Angeles-class submarines as the older class reaches the end of its lifespan, he said. The Virginia-class arrival is good news for Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard, the state's largest industrial employer, with 4,200 civilian workers. About 90 percent of the yard's work has been on the aging Los Angeles-class attack submarines, including maintenance as well as nuclear reactor refueling and defuelings. More Shipyard jobs Capt. Gregory Thomas, who commands the shipyard, yesterday said the switch to Virginia-class work keeps us focused on what's been our principal product here for the past 10 years — which is submarines. It's a very smooth transition, Thomas said, adding that the workload should mean an increase to about 4,400 shipyard workers by 2013. The bulk of the work was non-reactor servicing, and that will continue with the Virginia subs, he said. Northrop Grumman is producing the Virginia-class submarines in a teaming arrangement with General Dynamics Electric Boat. The Virginia class is ultimately expected to total 30 vessels. Ten of the vessels have been delivered or were already under contract before a December award of a $14 billion contract for 8 more of the submarines, according to Bloomberg News.The contract calls for construction of 1 submarine in each of the years 2009 and 2010, and 2 per year from 2011 to 2013. The submarines are 377 feet long and have a beam of 34 feet. They can operate at underwater speeds of more than 25 knots, dive more than 800 feet and stay submerged for up to three months at a time. The submarines also are equipped with a lock-out chamber large enough for 9 commandos, more than triple the capacity of older submarines. Military and economy About 270 business people attended yesterday's military update at the Hilton Hawaiian Village by all five of the U.S. armed forces, a larger turnout than usual for the annual meeting. The event is hosted by the Chamber of Commerce of Hawai'i. Charlie Ota, the chamber's vice president for military affairs, said the big turnout may be tied to business looking even more to the military for contracts in tough economic times. The military is a relatively stable source of revenue to the economy, Ota said. Jimmy Carter said his election augured a new beginning, a new dedication within our government, and a new spirit among us all. Bill Clinton proclaimed (redundantly) in his first inaugural that a new season of American renewal has begun, and in his second he uncorked a veritable neoteric orgy: heralding the coming of a new century in a new millennium on the edge of a bright new prospect in human affairs; calling for a new vision of government, a new sense of responsibility, a new spirit of community; intoning that the promise we sought in a new land we will find again in a land of new promiseinvoking that final phrase five times for good measure. Obama, of course, will not need to strain so hard to cloak himself in the aura of novelty (though his people apparently aren't taking any chancesthe event's official theme, borrowed from the Gettysburg Address, is A New Birth of Freedom). As much as the country has grown accustomed to seeing Obama's mug on their TV screens, the sight of a black man taking the oath of office still promises to shock. But the signifiers of Obama's newness extend far beyond his race: They are generational, temperamental, intellectual, experiential. He has no real precedent as an occupant of the Oval Office. Not that this has forestalled the punditocracy from the nonstop analogizing of Obama to his predecessors. He's the new JFK, the new FDR, the new Lincoln, the new (albeit inverted) Reagan. And the attempts to pinpoint Obama along the ideological spectrum have been similarly unrelenting. The right looks at his economic-stimulus plans and spies an old-school, big-government liberal. The left looks at the tax cuts in that same plan, his hawkish foreign-policy appointments and decidedly nonprogressive economic ones, and his invocation invitation to Rick Warren, and wonders, Hey, was this guy really serious about all that centrist talk during the campaign? We thought he was only kidding, that he was one of us all along! Obama is difficult to pigeonhole not simply because he's new but because of the newness of the moment that heand weinhabit. It's a moment dominated by an economic crisis that's shaken bedrock beliefs about the infallibility of free markets. A moment when a revised architecture of power is arising globally, challenging America's status as an unrivaled superpower. When the networked age has finally arrived, inciting the implosion of the broadcast paradigm that governed politics in the Industrial Age. When the country is being transfigured demographically, hurtling toward becoming a majority-minority nation. This crescendo of forces produced Obama, made his ascension possible. Now he has a chance to shape the new era, to leave his stamp on it. This really is the first presidency of the 21st century, says Simon Rosenberg, head of the Democratic advocacy group NDN. Those who try to hold on to twentieth-century descriptions of politics are going to be disappointed and frustrated by what's about to emerge in the new administration, because American politics no longer fits into the old boxesand neither does Obama. For better or worse, what he is doing is building a new box. By every indication, Obama's efforts to build that box are being guided not by any hoary orthodoxies or deep partisan convictions but by a strict adherence to the doctrine of pragmatism. He brings to the task not just a new team and a new agenda but the makings of a new kind of political machine. The questions now are whether he can turn his rhetoric about transcending polarities into an effective governing strategy; whether he can forge a cohesive legislative coalition to advance his aims; and, if he can and does, whether the Democratic Party will still look remotely like itselfor more like, well, him. One of the salaf said: Do not expect a response when you have blocked the way with sins. One of the poets also commented on this by saying: We call upon Allaah for every hardship, then we forget Him when the hardship is relieved. How can we hope for an answer to our du’aa’s, when we have blocked its way with sins? Jaami’ al-‘Uloom wa’l-Hukam (1/107, 108). *Question:* How does one know that he is afflicted by (black) magic and what
is the correct Islaamic cure for it?
*Answer:* There is no difference between black, red, white or green magic.
Any type of magic done to harm someone else is *impermissible*. Even to
learn it is impermissible although one is not acting with it. What is
apparent from the texts and the statements of the Muslim scholar is that to
learn magic in itself is disbelief. That is because it is not possible for
one to learn it without disbelieving in the Book of Allaah سبحانه و تعالى.
Why is it that the one that learns magic is considered a disbeliever?
Allaah سبحانه و تعالى says:
وَمَا كَفَرَ سُلَيْمَانُ وَلَـكِنَّ الشَّيْاطِينَ كَفَرُواْ يُعَلِّمُونَ
النَّاسَ السِّحْرَ
*{… Sulaimân did not disbelieve, but the Shayâtîn (devils) disbelieved,
teaching men magic …}* [al-Baqarah 2:102]
And also in the same ayah:
وَمَا يُعَلِّمَانِ مِنْ أَحَدٍ حَتَّى يَقُولاَ إِنَّمَا نَحْنُ فِتْنَةٌ
فَلاَ تَكْفُرْ
*{… but neither of these two (angels) taught anyone (such things) till they
had said, We are for trial, so disbelieve not *
*(by learning this magic from us).…} *[al-Baqarah 2:102]
And later in the ayah:
وَلَقَدْ عَلِمُواْ لَمَنِ اشْتَرَاهُ مَا لَهُ فِي الآخِرَةِ مِنْ خَلاَقٍ
*{… And indeed they knew that the buyers of it (magic) would have no share
in the Hereafter…} *[al-Baqarah 2:102]
The magician/sorcerer does not have the ability to have an effect of his
magic (to practice it) except by worshipping the Shaytaan, or he doesn't
exactly worship him but by making *ihaanah* (إهانة) i.e. looking down
(insulting) or disgracing the Book of Allaah سبحانه و تعالى or anything else
that may have in it the remembrance of Allaah سبحانه و تعالى, or for example
making *sajdah* (prostration) to the Shaytaan or anything other than Allaah
سبحانه و تعالى in order that these devils allow him or gives him the ability
for his magic to have some sort of effect on the people that he wants it to
affect.
It is impermissible to learn or to practice magic/sorcery, even if the goal
or objective is correct e.g. if one wants to remove magic from someone by
using magic – this is incorrect because *the end does not justify the means*.
A disease is not cured with another disease, so it is impermissible to learn
or teach magic no matter what the situation may be.
