*Introduction*
Indeed we are blessed to have with us our beloved Shaykh wa waalidunaa (and
our father) Abu Muhammad Rabee ibn Haadi al-Madkhali hafidahullaahu ta'aala
and he is indeed a well-known scholar. We ask Allaah to bless him in his
knowledge, actions and his life.
The Shaykh hafidahullaahu ta'aala began by praising Allaah سبحانه و تعالى
and sending salaat and salaam upon the Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم, his
family his Companions and those who follow the guidance. He then thanked
Allaah for this conference and for being invited to speak with us and he
praised Allaah سبحانه و تعالى that He guided us to Islaam, and to the manhaj
of the Salaf.
The manhaj of the Salaf is (adhering to) the Book of Allaah سبحانه و تعالى
and the Sunnah of Rasoolullaah صلى الله عليه و سلم upon the fiqh of the
Salaf as-Saalih. He said, I order myself, and you with the *taqwa* of Allaah
عز و جلand the uprightness and firmness upon this Deen and upon this manhaj.
Allaah سبحانه و تعالى gave us advice, and the advices are many and the
orders are many; and from them is that Allaah سبحانه و تعالى says:
وَاعْتَصِمُوا بِحَبْلِ اللَّهِ جَمِيعًا وَلَا تَفَرَّقُوا وَاذْكُرُوا
نِعْمَةَ اللَّهِ عَلَيْكُمْ إِذْ كُنْتُمْ أَعْدَاءً فَأَلَّفَ بَيْنَ
قُلُوبِكُمْ فَأَصْبَحْتُم بِنِعْمَتِهِ إِخْوَاناً
*{And hold fast, all of you together, to the Rope of Allâh (i.e. this
Qur'ân), and be not divided among yourselves, and remember Allâh's Favour on
you, for you were enemies one to another but He joined your hearts together
so that, by His Grace, you became brethren (in Islâmic Faith)
…}*[Aal-'Imraan 3:103]
*Tawheed*
And you must learn *tawheed*, the tawheed of Allaah سبحانه و تعالى – that we
worship Allaah سبحانه و تعالى and we *do not associate partners with
Him*and we all hold together, fast upon this rope. The Messenger of
Allaah صلى
الله عليه و سلم said that *Verily Allaah likes for you three things: that
you worship Him and disassociate anything as partners with Him; that you
hold fast to the Rope of Allaah and do not split; and that you submit or you
obey the leaders over you; and He hates for you three things: 'he-said,
she-said' (irrelevant talk), persistent questioning, and wasting of wealth.
*[1] In this hadith and in the previous ayah there is a commandment
regarding: holding onto the Rope of Allaah عز و جل, *thabaath* (being firm)
upon that and the prohibition of splitting and dividing.
He hafidahullaahu ta'aala went on to say that after the Sahaabah were split,
Allaah سبحانه و تعالى guided them to Islaam and brought together between
their hearts and put love between them. So Allaah سبحانه و تعالى has blessed
and has given His favours to this Ummah. It is from the greatest blessings
and favours which He bestowed upon us that He made us brothers, the
*ni'mah*(نعمة – blessing) of
*aquwwah* (أخوة – brotherhood) – the blessing of being brothers upon the
Kitaab and the Sunnah and that we stay away from associating partners with
Allaah سبحانه و تعالى. So, after worshipping Allaah سبحانه و تعالى Alone we
come together as one, and we *forbid shirk and we order with tawheed*. The
aayaat and ahaadeeth are many to this effect, in these aayaat and ahaadeeth
we are shown the *danger of shirk*. We must learn these aayaat and
ahaadeeth, the proofs of at-tawheed and the proofs of shirk.
*'Ibaadah*
We must also learn our 'ibaadah – how to worship Allaah in all types of
'ibaadah as Allaah سبحانه و تعالى says:
وَمَا خَلَقْتُ الْجِنَّ وَالْإِنسَ إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُونِ {55} مَا أُرِيدُ
مِنْهُم مِّن رِّزْقٍ وَمَا أُرِيدُ أَن يُطْعِمُونِ {56} إِنَّ اللَّهَ هُوَ
الرَّزَّاقُ ذُو الْقُوَّةِ الْمَتِينُ
*{And I (Allâh) created not the jinns and humans except they should worship
Me (Alone). I seek not any provision from them
(i.e. provision for themselves or for My creatures) nor do I ask that they
should feed Me (i.e. feed themselves or My creatures).
Verily, Allâh is the All-Provider, Owner of Power, the Most Strong.

Sheikh al-Islaam Ibn Taimiyyah (Rahimahullaah) said that *'ibaadah
(worship) is a comprehensive term for everything which Allaah سبحانه و تعالى
loves and is pleased with from speech and actions – apparent and
hidden.*There are many acts of 'ibaadah, from them are: du'aa,
seeking help from
Allaah سبحانه و تعالى, hoping in Allaah سبحانه و تعالى, asking of Allaah
سبحانه و تعالى, having trust in Allaah سبحانه و تعالى, being obedient to
your parents, keeping the ties of the womb, seeking refuge with Allaah
سبحانه و تعالى from the Shaitaan and other than him, establishing the
salaah, giving the zakaah, fasting, performing hajj and so on and so forth.
*The Importance of Knowledge*
We need to *study* these 'ibaadaat, we need to study how they are done –
from the aspects of tawheed and doing them sincerely for Allaah سبحانه و
تعالى; and

A consumer boycott of agricultural produce exerts direct economic pressure where it matters. If you're not in the habit of checking the country of origin on fruit and vegetables to minimise food miles, you may not have noticed just how much Israeli produce is in our shops and supermarkets. At the moment, there are piles of new potatoes (though it's hard to see why anyone with a scrap of environmental awareness would buy these when our indigenous main crop spuds are still firm and abundant), and that's just for starters. If you go out today and buy avocadoes, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, Medjoul dates, sharon fruit (persimmons), chillies, oranges, pomegranates, grapefruit or fresh herbs, it's extremely likely that they will be Israeli. Most of this produce carries country of origin labelling or is branded as Carmel, Bio-Top or Jaffa. In the herb category, there's room - intentional or otherwise - for confusion. Increasingly your dill, tarragon or basil may be labelled as 'West Bank'. This is not a Palestinian alternative to the Israeli option; it comes from Israeli settlements in Palestine's occupied territories. Israel's agricultural exporting company, Carmel Agrexco, is one of the biggest suppliers of fresh produce to the UK. As the company puts it: Israel's sunny climate enables Agrexco to tap the resources of its Carmel growers most of the annum. By lining up other complementary supply sources – such as fruit, vegetable and root crop growers located in countries in the Mediterranean basin, South America, and Africa – the Carmel label is available year-round An expert in air-freighting with a base near Heathrow, Agrexco supplies the UK with everything from sweetcorn, rocket and radishes through to melons, strawberries and kumquats, so delivering the 'permanent global summertime' of horticultural produce that food retailers have educated British consumers to expect. As a business, it's impressive, but I don't intend to buy any of it. For people aware of the recent horror that unfolded in Gaza and the emerging evidence of the scale of destruction, this cornucopia of fruit and vegetables represents a ready-made target for taking personal action in our daily lives to express disapproval at Israel's ongoing aggression against the Palestinian people. We can use the same tactic against Israel that was so effective in showing up South Africa as the apartheid state it once was. The parallels with South Africa are striking. Writing in the Guardian, Naomi Klein recently reminded us of the words of Ronnie Kasrils, a prominent South African politician, who said in 2007 that the segregation he saw in the West Bank and Gaza was infinitely worse than apartheid. So what, exactly, is he talking about? While we have been munching our way through its avocadoes, Israel has demolished Palestinian homes, evicted their occupants and expropriated their land and water resources. It has illegally colonised productive Palestinian land with waves of settlers. A boycott of Israeli fruit and vegetables, as opposed to other sorts of boycott (academic, sporting), is particularly apt because horticulture has been a major plank of Israeli expansion. Medjoul dates in the Jordan Valley, for example, base their operations on confiscated Palestinian land, in contravention of international law and the Fourth Geneva Convention. As if that wasn't enough, Israel has effectively imprisoned Palestinians with checkpoints, an illegal wall and an oppressive system of travel permits and colour-coded identity cards, so scuppering Palestinian economic development. As OXFAM told the House of Commons International Development Committee (pdf), costs for Palestinians who want to export products are up to 70% higher than for Israelis. Settlers in the West Bank get direct access to markets in and through Israel without the disruptive road blocks and transfers faced by the Palestinians who are obliged to rely on Israeli intermediaries. The revenue from taxes and customs goes to Israel, which costs the Palestinian economy 3% of its GDP a year. Left to develop its agricultural economy, Palestine could be a fertile and productive land. Olive oil used to be a profitable export crop but according to the Applied Research Institute in Jerusalem, over 500,000 ancient olive trees have been bulldozed and cut down since 2000 (see zaytoun.org) to make way for the construction of Israeli settlements, settler-only roads and the Separation Wall. Yet in recent years, and despite all the odds stacked against them, marginalised Palestinian growers have produced good extra virgin olive oil, recently gaining organic status for some of their production.

Or Yehuda Deputy Mayor Uzi Aharon said missionaries recently entered a neighborhood in the predominantly religious town of 34,000 in central Israel, distributing hundreds of New Testaments and missionary material. After receiving complaints, Aharon said, he got into a loudspeaker car last Thursday and drove through the neighborhood, urging people to turn over the material to Jewish religious students who went door to door to collect it. The books were dumped into a pile and set afire in a lot near a synagogue, he said. The Israeli Maariv daily reported Tuesday that hundreds of Jewish religious school students took part in the book-burning. But Aharon told The Associated Press that only a few students were present, and that he was not there when the books were torched. Not all of the New Testaments that were collected were burned, but hundreds were, he said. He said he regretted the burning of the books, but called it a commandment to burn materials that urge Jews to convert. I certainly don't denounce the burning of the booklets, he said. I denounce those who distributed the booklets. Jews worship from the Old Testament, including the Five Books of Moses and the writings of the ancient prophets. Christians revere the Old Testament as well as the New Testament, which contains the ministry of Jesus. Calev Myers, an attorney who represents Messianic Jews, or Jews who accept Jesus as their savior, demanded in an interview with Army Radio that all those involved be put on trial. He estimated there were 10,000 Messianic Jews, who are also known as Jews for Jesus, in Israel. Police had no immediate comment. Israeli authorities and Orthodox Jews frown on missionary activity aimed at Jews, though in most cases it is not illegal. Still, the concept of a Jew burning books is abhorrent to many in Israel because of the association with Nazis torching piles of Jewish books during the Holocaust of World War II. Earlier this year, the teenage son of a prominent Christian missionary was seriously wounded when a package bomb delivered to the family's West Bank home went off in his hands.
