Global Boycott Movement Marks Its Successes

By Jeff Handmaker

21 February, 2009
The Electronic Intifada

Responding to the many calls for boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS)
against Israel, solidarity movements around the world have marked many
successes. It is important for human rights advocates to build on this momentum
and seize the opportunity to do what is within their power to try and hold
Israel accountable for its abuses of human rights and other international laws.

Since the initial BDS call by Palestinian intellectuals and academics in
October 2003, which was followed by separate calls for sports, arts, economic
and other calls for BDS, there has been a seismic shift in the global
solidarity movement for human rights in Israel-Palestine. Lawyers, doctors,
academics, students, trade unionists, school teachers and many other activists
have marked successes around the world. Their efforts are an inspiring
reflection of the South African anti-apartheid movement, where BDS was also
used very effectively.

In first few weeks of 2009 alone, European, North American and South African
solidarity movements have made remarkable progress:

- A growing number of politicians in Europe and North America have put forward
uncomfortable, probing questions to their governments and clearly want to do
more. One example is the "Break the Silence" campaign within the Dutch Labor
Party.

- Numerous letters and opinion pieces have been published by prominent figures
in major national newspapers, including statement by prominent lawyers and
professors published by The Sunday Times on 11 January 2009.

- The global "Derail Veolia" campaign has grown in leaps and bounds. An
important success was the decision by the Stockholm municipality to cancel an
agreement with Veolia Transport, on the basis of its involvement in the
Jerusalem light-rail project, to the tune of several billion euros.

- There have been calls for international investigations of war crimes from the
UN Special Rapporteur for the Occupied Palestinian Territories, the UN Human
Rights Council, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, the head of UNRWA
(the UN agency for Palestine refugees) and the UN Secretary General as well as
scores of high-profile international lawyers around the world.

- The European Parliament managed to halt negotiations on strengthening the
trading relationship between the EU and Israel in the framework of the
Association Agreement and there are new, emboldened efforts to try and get the
Association Agreement suspended altogether.

- Countless demonstrations have taken place in villages, towns and cities
around the world, from Cape Town to Swansea and from Stockholm to Montreal and
they are attracting decent publicity. Where there has been no television crew
present, activists have made effective use of online resources such as YouTube.

- In South Africa there was a major success when dockworkers affiliated with
SATAWU and the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) refused to
unload a ship containing Israeli goods. The story made national headlines for
several days.

- Academic boycott is taking hold in academic institutions around the world --
students in particular have been leading the way on this, but academics also.

Israel's 22-day-long bombardment of Gaza, the greatest use of military force in
the Occupied Palestinian Territories since 1967 and what several commentators
have already referred to as the Palestinian Sharpeville, has greatly fueled BDS
efforts.

Especially before the blockade and recent carnage in Gaza, some activists
raised concerns that by pursuing BDS, they may be curtailing dialogue,
isolating progressive elements within Israel or even harming Palestinians.
However, these concerns have greatly diminished as activists have realized how
effective a mechanism BDS really is. In any event, the existence of a dialogue
towards a just and sustainable peace between Palestinians and Israel is clearly
non-existent, and there is little incentive on the part of Israel to engage in
this any time soon. Progressive elements within I

WAS PRE WAR BRITISH EMPIRE PRO-MUSLIMS ?

Subject: Bismillah [IslamCity] uk: Is post-war Britain anti-Muslim?

Is post-war Britain anti-Muslim?
The Mail's Peter Oborne has written a pamphlet arguing this country and its
media are Islamophobic. Doubtless, many will disagree with him, but his views
can't be ignored.

The history of post-war Britain is a proud story of enlightenment and the
steady eradication of irrational fears and resentments.

Prejudice against foreigners, homosexuals, gays and blacks has been softened or
even eliminated.

But today, one resentment is stronger than ever. Islamophobia - prejudice
against Islam - is Britain's last remaining socially respectable form of
bigotry, and we should be ashamed of ourselves for it.

This dangerous demonising of the country's 1.6 million Muslim inhabitants is
happening all around us.

Take the story in a red-top newspaper earlier this year about a bus driver who
apparently ordered his passengers off his bus so that he could kneel towards
Mecca and pray.

It was taken up by those who want to exaggerate and exploit divisions in our
society and added to the growing list of perceived outrages committed by
Muslims in this nominally Christian (though largely secular) country of ours.
Pictures of the driver on his prayer-mat went the rounds.

Except it didn't happen like that. The truth was that his bus had been taken
out of service by an inspector because it was running late, and the passengers
switched to the one behind - not an unusual occurrence by any means, as bus
travellers know.

The driver, with his bus temporarily idle, took the opportunity of a break and
used it for his prayers. Meanwhile, as CCTV cameras show, the passengers waited
for no more than a minute before boarding the next bus and going on their way.

That is the explanation the bus company would have given if it had had the
chance. Instead, the newspaper chose to believe its one informant, a
21-year-old plumber, who had arrived late on the scene, jumped to the wrong
conclusion and seen the chance to make some money by selling the story.

In these disturbing times, when Muslims are seen as fair game for any mischief
or mendacity, the newspaper jumped at it. 'Get off my bus: I need to pray',
screamed its headline, and another Islamophobic nail was hammered into the
coffin of inter-racial harmony in this country.

Again, six months ago, there was a widely reported story that hospital nurses
in Yorkshire were having to stop treating other patients while they moved the
beds of sick Muslims to face Mecca five times a day.

The source was an unidentified nurse, and there was, as with so many of these
Islamophobic urban myths, a small grain of truth about it - caring staff
would sometimes help the terminally ill in this fashion. But, as the hospital
authorities made absolutely clear, never five times a day.

Nonetheless, the story took on a life of its own as angry letters poured in and
MPs voiced their protests. The incident is now part of the folklore, a central
piece of evidence for those who make the case that Muslims are invading,
infecting and destroying the British way of life.

Not surprisingly, it was the terrible 9/11 and 7/7 terrorist outrages in New
York and London that detonated much of the reaction we see today, but
Islamophobia was causing concern well before these events.

Back in the Nineties, the multicultural think-tank, the Runnymede Trust, was
warning of its dangers, and a report to this effect was endorsed by the
incoming Labour Home Secretary, Jack Straw, in 1997.

So it was sad, therefore, to see Straw, a decade later, joining in the chorus
against Muslim women wearing the veil.

It was clear to me that this was more than a random rumination from a member of
the Government. Rather, Labour appeared to have made the extraordinary decision
to try to identify with the general mood of anti-Muslim resentment.

I was shocked. In such volatile times, it was incumbent on all those in
positions of influence - politicians as well as commentators like myself -
to get their facts and language right.

Instead, Straw's intervention liberated the British media to go to extremes.
Soon practically every day brought forth news of some fresh affrontery
perpetrated by a Muslim.

This cumulative litany of condemnation became an anti-Islamic crusade. Nor is
it confined to one side of the political and cultural spectrum.

It enlists militant atheists alongside Christian fundamentalists. It unites
liberal progressives and curmudgeonly Tory commentators.

Take Polly Toynbee of the Guardian, normally regarded as a model of political
correctness and a champion of the oppressed. As long ago as 1997 she wrote: 'I
am an Islamophobe, and proud of it.'

Or this from one Conservative columnist, writing in The Independent: 'There are
widespread fears that Muslim i

Bismillah [IslamCity] Indo-Israel collaboration & Mumbai attacks

2009-02-27 Thread Ahsan Waheed
February 24, 2009

Col Ghulam Sarwar (R)

India and Israel have been hobnobbing with each other for the past
many decades but the world at large has been unmindful of their hush
hush activities. Likewise, hidden ties with both USA and Israel have
not seen light of the day and only recently details of these ties have
been unravel lest. It will be recalled that on November 25, 2008,
Mumbai terrorists did their job meticulously well by provoking every
possible ally in the world.

By killing foreigners in addition to many Indians, they enlisted the
support of all western terrorist nations against Islam and Muslims. As
a result, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Kashmir and Muslims in India have been
put on high alert as USA, UK and Israel are determined to strike a
stunning blow on their entity. Pakistan, as expected is feeling rather
perplexed on the presumption that Muslims might have been involved in
the Mumbai carnage. These are however; far fetched apprehensions as in
view of their religious beliefs, Muslims would not perform this
dastardly act with such precision. As things stand, the Mumbai attacks
may have chosen to target whatever comes in their way, be it the
railway shorts or luxurious hotels, like “The Taj or Obroi Trident, or
any community centre (Nariman House.

However reports released recently have revealed that the assault on
Nariman House was carried out deliberately with ulterior motives.
Presumably, the terrorists had wanted to involve Israel also to join
Indo-US strategic killings of Muslims. According to a retired Indian
Admiral, Das, the aims of the attack on the Jewish Centre was to tell
India that it’s growing links with Israel were not acceptable to the
terrorist groups. Nariman House attack was to tell the Indians clearly
that India’s growing linkage with Israel was not what India should be
doing. Seen in this background, India wanted to use terrorism ploy to
get military concessions from other anti-Islamic nations.

India, for quite some time, had been making desperate efforts to
develop relationships with both USA and Israel and it has been quite
successful in its efforts. Interestingly, due to its clever
machinations, it has also successfully maintained economic relations
with the Muslim World - mainly the Gulf States. Apart from acquiring
military wares from USA, Europe and Russia in recent times, India has
become one of the largest customers of Israeli military techniques and
arms which are considered more advanced and lethal in the world. India
acquires weapons of about 1.5 billion dollars every year from Israel.
Only Russia sells more arms to India than Israel. India believes that
terrorism ploy could help advance its military interests in USA and
Israel and its calculations seem to be absolutely precise and
faultless. It may not be amiss to mention here that India seeks
advance military equipment and technology at concessional rates by
using Russia’s bargaining chips, but now Mumbai’s November 26, 2008
incident has given an extra advantage to New Delhi to obtain more
privileges from Tel Aviv. Israel let loose hell in Palestine by using
cluster bombs, killing thousands of innocent Palestinians including
women and children. India, however, has not said a single word of
sympathy for the hapless Palestinians. Instead, it is planning to sign
more agreements in days to come with the Jewish state.

To conclude, India and Israel thinks alike for damaging the interests
of Muslim countries. However, it is a matter of deep egret that
Muslims are not aware of the dangers that are currently facing them.
How sad it is to see that when Palestine was under terror attacks from
fascist Israel, the Muslim world was watching these ghastly scenes on
their TV screens and displaying no discomfitures?

Bismillah [IslamCity] The virtues of the Sahaabah (may Allaah be pleased with them)

2009-02-27 Thread Mohammed A
Belief in the good character and virtue of the Sahaabah is the belief of Ahl
al-Sunnah wa’l-Jamaa’ah. That is because Allaah has praised them in His Book
and they were also praised by the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be
upon him) as is narrated in the books of Sunnah. These texts reach the level of
mutawaatir in many cases, which clearly indicates that Allaah gave them special
virtues and noble characteristics, by means of which they attained that great
honour and high status with Him. As Allaah chose for His message the most
pure-hearted of His slaves (i.e., the Prophets), so too He chose as the heirs
of the Prophets those who would be grateful for this blessing and who were fit
for this honour (of conveying the message), as He says (interpretation of the
meaning):

“Allaah knows best with whom to place His Message”

[al-An’aam 6:124]

Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: Allaah knows best where to
place His Message, both with regard to the original recipient and those who
inherit it from him. He knows best who is fit to receive His Message and convey
it to His slaves in a trustworthy and sincere manner, respecting the Sender and
fulfilling his duties towards Him, patiently following His commands and showing
gratitude for His blessings and drawing close to Him, and He knows who is not
fit for that. Similarly, He knows best who among the nations is fit to be the
heirs of His Messengers and to succeed them and convey the Message that they
received from their Lord.

Tareeq al-Hijratayn, p. 171

Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Thus We have tried some of them with others, that they might say: ‘Is it these
(poor believers) whom Allaah has favoured from amongst us?’ Does not Allaah
know best those who are grateful?”

[al-An’aam 6:53]

Shaykh al-Sa’di (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: Those who acknowledge the
blessing and affirm it, and who do what it requires of righteous deeds, are the
ones on whom Allaah bestows His blessing, to the exclusion of those who are not
grateful, for Allaah is wise and He does not place His bounty with one who is
not qualified to receive it.

Just as there are many verses and ahaadeeth which speak of their virtue and
high status, so too there are texts which state the reasons why they deserved
this high status, such as the verse in which Allaah says (interpretation of the
meaning):

“Muhammad is the Messenger of Allaah. And those who are with him are severe
against disbelievers, and merciful among themselves. You see them bowing and
falling down prostrate (in prayer), seeking Bounty from Allaah and (His) Good
Pleasure. The mark of them (i.e. of their Faith) is on their faces (foreheads)
from the traces of prostration (during prayers). This is their description in
the Tawraat (Torah). But their description in the Injeel (Gospel) is like a
(sown) seed which sends forth its shoot, then makes it strong, and becomes
thick and it stands straight on its stem, delighting the sowers, that He may
enrage the disbelievers with them. Allaah has promised those among them who
believe (i.e. all those who follow Islamic Monotheism, the religion of Prophet
Muhammad till the Day of Resurrection) and do righteous good deeds, forgiveness
and a mighty reward (i.e. Paradise)”

[al-Fath 48:29]

Among the greatest reasons for the high status of the Sahaabah is that to which
Allaah bore witness of their purity of heart and sincere faith. That, by
Allaah, is a mighty testimony from the Lord of mankind, which no human being
can attain after the cessation of the Revelation.

Listen to the words of Allaah (interpretation of the meaning):

“Indeed, Allaah was pleased with the believers when they gave the Bay‘ah
(pledge) to you (O Muhammad) under the tree, He knew what was in their hearts,
and He sent down As‑Sakeenah (calmness and tranquillity) upon them, and He
rewarded them with a near victory”

[al-Fath 48:18]

Ibn Katheer (may Allaah have mercy on him) said in Tafseer al-Qur’aan al-‘Azeem
(4/243):

“He knew what was in their hearts” i.e., of sincerity and loyalty, and the
willingness to hear and obey. End quote.

How beautiful are the words of ‘Abd-Allaah ibn Mas’ood (may Allaah be pleased
with him): “Whoever among you wishes to follow (someone), let him follow one
who has died, for the one who is still alive is not safe from fitnah. The
companions of Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) were the
best of this ummah, the most righteous of heart and the deepest in knowledge
and the most straightforward, people whom Allaah chose to accompany His Prophet
and establish His religion. So acknowledge their virtue and follow in their
footsteps, and adhere as much as you can to their morals and religion, for they
were following right guidance.

Narrated by Ibn ‘Abd al-Barr in al-Jaami’, no. 1810.

Allaah promised Paradise and eternal bliss to the Muhaajireen and Ansaar, and
He stated that He is pleased with
