Questions Asked to The Scholars

August 2, 2006 / Rajab 8, 1427

These questions were asked to Sheikh Saleh al Fowzan

1. How do we respond to a person that says: If ascribing oneself to salafiyah
is correct because you are ascribing yourself to the early generation of
Muslims, then the same goes for ascribing yourself to Jama'tul Tableegh because
you are ascribing yourself to da'wah (Islamic Propagation) and Allah has
ordered us to give da'wah in the Quran.

Sheikh: Jama'tul Tableegh are deviant. Their call is deviant. They don't call
to the correct Islam. They mix between what is correct and what is incorrect.
This is deviation and incorrect.

2. What is the ruling on Muslim men wearing ties?

Sheikh: This is not permissible. This is imitation of those who wear the cross.
It is not permissible.

3. Is the holding of a waleemah (marriage party) obligatory? If a person do not
do so and has been married for 4 years, can he merely pay his wife some money
to make up for not having the waleemah?

Sheikh: The waleemah is sunnah, it is not obligatory.

1. In America, if a disbeliever comes to a masjid and seeks funds, should we
give them if we doubt them using this money for drugs or the likes?

Answer: Give him/her charity such as clothing or something permissible to eat,
but don't give him/her money if you have a strong doubt about them spending it
on drugs or the likes.

(Sheikh Abdullah al Ghudayan)

2. Is it permissible for a man to buy children films for his child while
knowing that these films have music and singing? The excuse that the father
gives is that this is something educational for his child.

Answer: If there is present in these films that which causes harm to the
children (in their religion), then this is not permissible. The Messenger
(sallahu alahee wa salem) said: All of you are shepherds, and all will be
asked about his flock

(Sheikh Abdullah al Ghudayan)
3. Is it allowed for a married couple to watch pornography films together for
the purpose of learning how to sexually please one another?

Answer: This is not allowed. These are evil pictures. No this is not allowed.
 (Sheikh Saleh al Fowzan)
4. During buying and selling transactions, is it permissible for a man to look
at a woman's face?

Answer: There is no need for him to look at her face. His desire is to buy or
sell, not the woman's face.
(Sheikh Saleh al Fowzan)

August 7, 2006 / Rajab 13, 1427

1. If a child reaches the age of 5, and his father has still not slaughtered
for him/her(al-Aqeeqah), is it legislated for him (the father) to slaughter at
such an age?

Answer: Yes, he (the father) should slaughter even if it be after a long period
of time. Even if the father dies, it is still upon him and the money for it
should be taken from his wealth left behind.

(Sheikh Abdullah al Ghudayan)
2. What is the proof that Qunoot is in the hands of the Muslim rulers?

Answer: What is the role of the ruler?

Questioner: To administer the affairs of his country and people.

Answer: The answers that you are looking for can be found in Ibn Taymiyyah's
book: As Siyasah Ash Share'yah (Legislated Politics)
(Sheikh Abdullah al Ghudayan)
3. Is it allowed for the parent to beat his/her child? The reason for the
question is because we have heard that this is something not allowed.

Answer: You know that raising a child is a great responsibility. It is upon the
parent to use in raising his/her child means that bring the children closer,
not ways and means that push them further away.

(Sheikh Abdullah al Ghudayan)

1. If a man intends to take on a second wife, does he have to tell his first
wife his intention?

Answer: He can tell her. There is nothing wrong in this.

Questioner: But is it obligatory for him to tell her before he does so?

Sheikh: He can tell her before, or after. Both are permissible, but he should
tell her before so that she doesn't become suspicious of his actions when he is
away.

(Sheikh Ahmed an Najmee)

2. If a man intends on marrying a second wife, but he has pending debts, is it
obligatory for him to pay his debts before he gets married a second time?

Answer: This returns to the owner of the debt. If they allow the person to
delay paying the debt until a later time so that they can get married, there is
no problem with this.

(Sheikh Ahmed an Najmee)
3. Is it permissible for the Muslims to supplicate for the victory of Hezbullah
over Israel?

Answer: It is permissible for the Muslims to supplicate against

Dear All Muslims.

MASHA ALLAH VERY GOOD ANALYSIS.  DR. ZAKIR NAIK IS REALLY
A PERFECT IN KNOWLEDGE.

ALLAH SUBHANO TAULA MAY GIVE HIM MORE KNOWLEDGE.  BY HIS
DA'WA MANY GHAIR MUSLIMS HAVE EMBRASED ISLAM.

YES, OF COURSE HE SEEMS TO BE A WAHABI, NO DOUBT.  BUT
ALL THOSE WHO BELIEVE IN ONE GOD, ONE MUSHKAL KUSHA,
ONE HAJAT RAWAH ARE SAID TO BE WAHABI.  MUHAMMAD BIN
ABDUL WAHAB WAS A MAN WHO PREECHED LESSON OF TAUHEED
OF ALLAH.  SO HE WAS DECLARED WAHABI.  WAHABISM IS NOT A
MASLIK.  SOME PEOPLE SAY TO DEOBANDI'S ARE WAHABI.
SOME PEOPLE SAY TO AHLE HADITH ARE WAHABI.

THIS IS DUE TO LAKE OF KNOWLEDGE.  WE ARE ALL MUSLIMS.
WE HAVE BASICALLY TWO BOOKS, QURAN AND HADITH.

LATER ON WHEN SOME FAQEE CAME, THEN SO MANY FIRQAJAT
CAME INTO EXISTANCE.  I WILL LIKE TO SAY IN INDO-PAK THERE ARE
SO MANY FIRQAJAT, LIKE AHLE HADITH, DEOBANDI, BRELVI, SHAI,
AHMEDI.  IN ADDITIONS THERE ARE SO MANY MINOR FIRQAJAT.

FOR US ONLY ATHENTIC BOOKS ARE QURAN AND HADITH.  NO ONE
CAN DENY THESE TWO BOOKS.  ALL OTHER BOOKS WRITTEN BY
VARIOUS SCHOLLARS CAN BE ACCEPTED/REJECTED EXCEPT THESE
TWO.

DR. ZAKIR NAIK GIVE QUOTATIONS FROM THESE TWO.

I have seen many different VCDs that show Zakir Naik speeches, and what he has
said are mostly about tawheed. I don't think Zakir presents himself as a
follower of Wahhabism or an enemy of any branch of Islamic teaching. He is
clearly not an enemy Sufism. All he talk about is that followers of non-Islamic
tawheed prinsiples and practices need to reflect on the way they search,
define, and position the God.

Tawheed is all about the logical thinking, so it is of course based on
analytical ability. In many ways, knowledge very much helps someone to
establish this ability. Dr Zakir Naik, alhamdulillah, proved himself of having
a great strength, talent, and --above all-- skills to challenge what we believe
as flawed theologies and, in turn, influence non-Muslims to accept the
concept of the Oneness of Allah Subhanahu wa-Ta'aala. Look how many Hindus and
Christians have embraced Islam after listening to Zakir's speeches.

So, it hard to imagine that someone doesn't support him. He is just doing what
we are all supposed to do : the propogation of Islam, the work of da'wah. Why
someone has to narrow his/her mind by saying that Sufism is a threat of
Wahhabism? I don't agree that someon in Islam is a threat to someone else.

Peace be upon us all, brothers and sisters.

Wassalam alaykum,
Asyari Usman

Dr. Zakir Naik - Defame And Destroy.
Jamshed Iqbal
One comes across several interesting comments from the people who have been
defending Mr. Zakir Naik on Indian Muslims Blog. Most of my brothers and
sisters are impressed by his “immense knowledge” without knowing that his kind
of knowledge (database or retention) has nothing to do with religion at all. In
other words the knowledge he and his fans boast of is irreligious in its very
essence, for any true religion is an ever-flowing fountain of “wisdom” not
“knowledge”.
However, Mr. Naik is not an only man basking under this false impression but,
it is pity that most of our so-called Muslim scholars are making the profits of
same deceptive notion. And it is about this “subtle subversion” that Muslim
world or Muslim identity has suffered a great deal. Therefore in this article,
I would talk about a whole range of “scholars” of this nature and use the name
of Mr. Naik as an “all-purpose unit” to bring my point home.
A wise man may have some knowledge but “it does not necessitate that every
knowledgeable man is wise”. For knowledge comes with analysis but wisdom with
synthesis. Analysis demands scattering the whole into parts and pieces, on the
contrary, synthesis demands uniting and reassembling the parts, once again,
into a whole.

Even more than Lieberman, we should worry about Barak, warns Khaled Amayreh
from occupied Jerusalem

Defence Minister Ehud Barak is being courted by prime minister-designate
Benyamin Netanyahu to stay on in his new coalition government

--

Israeli prime minister-designate Benyamin Netanyahu and Labour Party leader
Ehud Barak have reached an understanding that would pave the way for the latter
to join the Likud-led government, expected to be sworn-in next week.

According to the agreement, Barak will remain defence minister and his party
will receive a number of other less important portfolios, including
agriculture, infrastructure, industry, trade and labour and one minister
without portfolio.

Politically, the understanding stipulates that Israel will formulate a
comprehensive plan for Middle East peace and cooperation, continue peace
negotiations with the Palestinians and commit itself to peace accords already
signed.

The agreement also speaks of acting against illegal Arab and Jewish building
in the West Bank which may suggest that the next government will step up the
virulent practice of demolishing Palestinian homes.

Israel has demolished as many as 20,000 Arab homes under a variety of pretexts
since it occupied the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip in 1967. The
Israeli government is also planning to destroy hundreds of homes in occupied
East Jerusalem in what one Palestinian leader has described as a decapitation
of Arab demographic presence in the city. The Palestinian Authority still
hopes to make Jerusalem the capital of a prospective Palestinian state.

Israeli commentators argue that the Likud- Labour understandings are too
generalised to give a clear picture as to the exact partnership between the two
parties. However, the constructive ambiguity should give both sides a feeling
that they got what they want.

Barak had said repeatedly that he wouldn't join a right- wing coalition.
However, in recent days, he apparently changed his mind despite stiff
opposition within his party to joining the Likud coalition, which observers
here already label the most right-wing government in Israel's history.

The understanding between Barak and Netanyahu is not final, as it must be
approved by the Labour Party general assembly which was due to meet to vote on
the deal.

A solid plurality, perhaps a majority, within Labour is firmly against joining
the Likud-led government for ideological reasons, and also because many
traditional Labourites see Barak's acceptance to play a second fiddle to
Netanyahu as an expression of cheap opportunism.

This, labour leaders calculate, would seriously harm Labour's image as a
progressive party and prospective alternative to right-wing demagogy. Barak
himself used to condemn Likud as representing swinish capitalism.

Ophir Pines-Paz is one of the most ardent opponents of Barak and any
partnership with the Likud. He says that Netanyahu will only use Barak and
whoever will join him from the Labour Party as a mere fig leaf to blur and
hide the true nature of the next government.

It is completely natural for Barak to want to join the Bibi-Lieberman
government, says Pines-Paz, the only MK who left Olmert's government after
Yisrael Beiteinu leader Avigdor Lieberman joined it. He doesn't have a problem
with their ideology. Perhaps you can remind me how many outposts Barak has
evacuated so far and how exactly he abided by the Talia Sasson on settlement
expansion, he said, referring to an official government report published on 8
March 2005.

The report, commissioned by former prime minister Ariel Sharon, was headed by
the former head of the State Prosecution Criminal Department, Talia Sasson.

On 23 March, Barak's opponents within the Labour Party accused him of trying
to turn Labour into Yisrael Beiteinu and of acting as if he got 50 seats in
the Knesset, rather than suffering an electoral defeat.

According to Haaretz, seven Labour lawmakers including Pines-Paz sent an
unprecedented letter to Netanyahu and his foreign minister, Avigdor Lieberman,
in which they declared that they won't be bound by the understandings reached
between Barak and the Likud leader.

This is the first time in the history of the Labour Party that the chairman
has set up a coalition negotiating team without a thorough and extensive
discussion within the party and without getting the approval of any of the
party's organs. It is a gross violation of the party's constitution.

The rebels also warned Netanyahu of the consequences of Barak's actions. You
should know that the negotiating team established by the Barak faction within
the Labour Party does not

Bismillah [IslamCity] lets play a trick..

2009-03-30 Thread lightuponlight .
A young man, a student in one of the universities, was one day taking a walk
with a Professor, who was commonly called the student's friend, from his
kindness to those who waited on his instructions.

As they went along, they saw lying in the path a pair of old shoes, which they
supposed to belong to a poor man who was employed in a field close by,and who
had nearly finished his day's work.

The student turned to the professor, saying: Let us play the man a trick: we
will hide his shoes, and conceal ourselves behind those bushes, and wait to see
his perplexity when he cannot find them.

“My young friend, answered the professor, we should never amuse ourselves at
the expense of the poor. But you are rich, and may give yourself a much greater
pleasure by means of this poor man. Put a coin in each shoe, and then we will
hide ourselves and watch how this affects him.

The student did so and they both placed themselves behind the bushes close by.
The poor man soon finished his work, and came across the field to the path
where he had left his coat and shoes.

While putting on his coat he slipped his foot into one of his shoes, but
feeling something hard, he stooped down to feel what it was, and found the
coin. Astonishment and wonder were seen upon his countenance. He gazed upon the
coin, turned it around, and looked at it again and again.

He then looked around him on all sides, but no person was to be seen. He now
put the money into his pocket, and proceeded to put on the other shoe; but his
surprise was doubled on finding the other coin.

His feelings overcame him; he fell upon his knees, looked up to heaven and
uttered aloud a fervent thanksgiving in which he spoke of his wife who was sick
and helpless, and his children without bread, whom this timely bounty, from
some unknown hand, would save from perishing.

The student stood there deeply affected, and his eyes filled with tears. Now,
said the professor, are you not much better pleased than if you had played
your intended trick?

The youth replied, You have taught me a lesson which I will never forget.
I feel now the truth of these words, which I never understood before:
It's more blessed to give than to receive.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbas(R.A.) reported that the Prophet(sallallahu alaiyhi
wassallam) said that encouraging good, prohibiting evil, lifting the burden of
the weak person and removing an offensive thing from a path are all acceptable
prayers to Allah. IBN-E-MAJAH

Bismillah [IslamCity] The Holy Prophet[pbuh] saw Allah with his heart in his dream

  Bismillah Hir Rahmaan Nir raheem
Assalaamu alaykum wa rahmatuallahi wa barakatuhu

http://prophetmuhammad.muslimpad.com/prophetpbuh-saw-allah-with-his-heart/

The Holy Prophet saw Allah with his heart in his dream. This did not happend
during Miraj because miraj was physical while he[salla lahu alaihi wa sallam]
saw Allah in his dream with his heart.

The below verse/ayah talks about speaking to Allah not seeing Allah

42:51 It is not given to any human being that Allâh should speak to him unless
(it be) by Inspiration, or from behind a veil, or (that) He sends a Messenger
to reveal what He wills by His Leave. Verily, He is Most High, Most Wise .

*Note:Messenger in the above verse/ayah means Angel/s.

The eyes of Allah's Apostle sleep but his heart does not sleep
Ablutions (Wudu')  Bukhari :: Book 1 :: Volume 4 :: Hadith 140 Narrated Kuraib:
Ibn 'Abbas said, The Prophet slept till he snored and then prayed (or probably
lay till his breath sounds were heard and then got up and prayed). Ibn 'Abbas
added: I stayed overnight in the house of my aunt, Maimuna, the Prophet slept
for a part of the night, (See Fateh-al-Bari page 249, Vol. 1), and late in the
night, he got up and performed ablution from a hanging water skin, a light
(perfect) ablution and stood up for the prayer. I, too, performed a similar
ablution, then I went and stood on his left. He drew me to his right and prayed
as much as Allah wished, and again lay and slept till his breath sounds were
heard. Later on the Mua'dhdhin (callmaker for the prayer) came to him and
informed him that it was time for Prayer. The Prophet went with him for the
prayer without performing a new ablution. (Sufyan said to 'Amr that some
people said, The eyes of Allah's Apostle sleep but his heart does not sleep.
'Amr replied, I heard 'Ubaid bin 'Umar
saying that the dreams of Prophets were Divine Inspiration, and then he
recited the verse: 'I (Abraham) see in a dream, (O my son) that I offer you in
sacrifice (to Allah). (37.102) (See Hadith No. 183)

The Holy Prophet saw Allah with, his heart.
The Book of Faith (Kitab Al-Iman) Muslim :: Book 1 : Hadith 334
It is narrated on the authority of Ibn 'Abbas that he (the Holy Prophet) saw
(Allah) with, his heart.

Allah spoke through inspiration while Prophet Muhammad salla lahu alaihi wa
sallam saw Allah subhanawatala with his heart.
Mu'ath Bin Jabal, Ibn 'Abbas, 'Ubaydah Bin al-Jarrah, and others (RAA) reported
that the Prophet (ASWS) was once so late in coming out to lead the morning
prayer that the sun was about to rise. He came out of his home hurriedly, led
the people in a (relatively) short prayer, and then turned toward them and said:
Stay in your places, for I will tell you what delayed me this morning: I got
up during the night and prayed for as long as was decreed for me. Then I became
so sleepy while praying that I found it hard to continue (so I slept). I then
saw (in a dream) my Lord (AWJ) in the best form.
He asked me, O Muhammad, about what does the most supreme society (i.e., the
angels) argue? I said, I do not know, my Lord. He asked me (again), O
Muhammad, about what does the most supreme society argue? I said, I do not
know, my Lord. He asked me (a third time), O Muhammad, about what does the
most supreme society argue? I said, I do not know, my Lord. Then He placed
His palm (on my back) between my shoulder-blades, and I felt the coolness of
His fingers inside my chest. Everything then became clear to me, and I knew
(the answer). He asked me, O Muhammad, about what does the most supreme society
argue? I replied, (They argue about) the expiating acts and (the acts that
elevate) the ranks (of the believers in Jannah). He asked,
What are the expiating acts? I replied, (They are) walking (once and again) to
the jama'ah prayers, sitting in the place of prayer (saying thikr) after
prayers, waiting (with anticipation) for the (next) prayer after the (previous)
prayer, and performing complete wudu' (even in) disliked conditions. He asked,
What are the (acts that elevate in) ranks? I replied, (They are:) feeding
food (to the needy), spreading (the greeting of) salam, speaking kindly (to
others), and praying at night while people are asleep. Then He commanded me,
Ask (from me),
Allahumma inni as'aluka fi'l-al-khayrat, wa-tark-al-munkarat,
wa-hubb-al-masakin, wa-an-taghfira li wa-tarhamani. Wa-itha aradta fitnatan fi
qawmin, fa-tawaffani ghayra maftun. Wa-as'aluka hubbaka, wahubba man yuhibbuka,
wahubba 'amalin yuquarribuni ila hubbik—O Allah, I ask you (to guide me to)
doing good deeds, avoiding evil deeds, and loving the needy. And ( I ask you)
to forgive me and show me mercy. And when You will to afflict some people
(around me) with a (destructive) tribulation, take my life without being
changed (in faith). And I beseech You (to grant me) the love of You, of those
who love You, and of all deeds that can bring me nearer to Your love.

Huge rise in number of racist attacks
By Nigel Morris - 9 July 2008

Record numbers of racist incidents - from verbal abuse to stabbings - are being
reported to police, fuelling fears that levels of Islamophobia are rising.

More than 61,000 complaints of racially motivated crime were made in 2006-07, a
rise of 28 per cent in just five years, with increases reported by most police
forces in England and Wales. Officers classified 42,551 of the complaints as
racially or religiously aggravated offences. Nearly two thirds were offences of
harassment, 13 per cent wounding, 12 per cent criminal damage and 10 per cent
assault.

In a report on race and the criminal justice system, the Ministry of Justice
also disclosed that police used their powers to stop and search one million
people. Black people were seven times more likely to be searched than white
people and Asians twice as likely.

The biggest surge in racist incidents was recorded last year in South
Yorkshire, where the number leapt by 77 per cent, and Thames Valley, where it
rose by 46 per cent. The Metropolitan Police recorded a fall against the
national trend of 19 per cent.

Inayat Bunglawala, spokesman for the Muslim Council of Britain, said: We're
getting more British Muslims reporting to us that they feel anti-Muslim
prejudice is increasing in society. There are incidents of attacks against
mosques and Islamic schools. Last week, Shahid Malik, Britain's first Muslim
minister, criticised what he described as growing hostility to Muslims in the
UK.

Attacker of Elderly sentenced

Mr Chaudhry walks with the aid of two walking sticks
22 October 2007

A man who left a 96-year-old war veteran blind in one eye after attacking him
on a packed tram has been given a three-year supervision order.

Stephen Gordon, 44, launched his unprovoked attack on Shah Chaudhry in Croydon,
south London, in December.

Gordon, from Croydon, was found guilty of grievous bodily harm after the attack
was caught on CCTV, Croydon Crown Court heard.

The British Transport Police said they were disappointed with the sentence.

Walking sticks

The blow to the victim's head caused serious injury, which has resulted in the
victim losing sight in one eye, said Det Sgt Darren Stenning.

And unfortunately since this assault, the victim's health has deteriorated and
he now resides in a care home.

The attack took place on a tram travelling between Sandilands and East Croydon
on December 14 last year.

Gordon had tried to push past the victim, who was standing in the aisle leaning
on his walking sticks.

As he squeezed under the pensioner's arms his hat was knocked off and he swore
at the man and punched him in the face.

Police said two school children who were on the tram chased Gordon. They later
gave evidence against him.

Bismillah [IslamCity] Hafsah (RA): The Qur’an’s keeper

2009-03-30 Thread Mohammad Usman

Hafsah الله عنها رضي: The Qur’an’s keeper
Adil Salahi | Arab News

The wives of the Prophet (peace be upon him) shared all the normal traits that
women have in common. They competed for the Prophet’s love and feelings.
Therefore, if one of them was able to do something that pleased him while the
others could not do the same she would not hesitate to do it. Zaynab bint Jahsh
used to give the Prophet a special type of honey, which he particularly liked.
The Prophet used to stop at each of his wives’ homes every afternoon, enquiring
whether they needed anything. Then he would spend the night with whoever it was
her turn. One day, he came into Ayesha’s place after having had his honey at
Zaynab’s. As he entered, Ayesha said to him: “You have had some Maghafir.”
(Maghafir was a sweet drink that gave an unpleasant smell). He said that he
only had honey at Zaynab’s. She said: “Then the bees that produced that honey
must have fed on Maghafir.” The Prophet was unhappy because he was keen that he
should always have a good smell.

He then went to Hafsah, and she said to him the same thing. He was really
upset, and he said that he would not have that honey again. God then revealed
Surah 66, which opens with a statement that the Prophet should not forbid
himself something God made lawful to him. It warns the Prophet’s two wives that
they must never collude in a scheme against him, or else they would face God’s
anger.

An event that shocked the Muslim community in Madinah was that the Prophet’s
wives asked him for a more comfortable standard of living. He felt that worldly
comforts should not be their preoccupation. When they persisted, he was angry
and swore that he would not come near them for a month. They were very unhappy
to have so displeased him. After a month was over he acted on God’s
instructions, giving them a choice between staying with him, even though his
was a life of hardship, or leaving him for a more comfortable life. He would
then divorce anyone who chose the latter option and give her good gifts. Every
one of them chose to remain his wife. None would prefer anything to being a
wife of the Prophet and a mother of all believers.

That was perhaps the last point of disagreement in which Hafsah was involved.
After that she realized that she had to restrain her feelings in order to be
more worthy of her position. She turned to her devotion with more dedication.

During Abu Bakr’s short reign as Caliph, the Qur’an was collected in a single
volume. This was the first complete copy of the Qur’an. It remained with the
Caliph until he passed away. It was then kept by the second Caliph, Umar, until
he died. Thereafter, it was with Hafsah and remained in her custody as long as
she lived. During Uthman’s reign the Qur’an was collated anew, and several
copies were written down. When these copies were completed, the first copy that
was with Hafsah was used to check their accuracy. A copy was sent to each main
population center to serve as the reference copy. Hafsah’s copy was returned to
her and remained in her custody until she died.

Bismillah [IslamCity] India battles its urban wild

2009-03-30 Thread Ahsan Waheed
By Priyanka Bhardwaj

NEW DELHI - Often it becomes apparent that India's slow-to-move
government agencies are caught in a time warp, struggling to catch up
with the efficient private sector rooted in high-tech paperless
functioning.

Take the case of the state of Haryana that adjoins Delhi and boasts of
modern cities such as Chandigarh and Gurgaon, the hub of
multinational, global outsourcing and software firms, operating out of
state-of-the-art office spaces.

Saddled with reams of hard copy files, the Haryana police, which does
not boast the best anti-crime record, has been grapplingwith rats
devouring official records stored in usually dilapidated conditions.

To deal with file eating rodents, Haryana officials have arrived at a
solution that may seem rather offbeat. Rather than spruce and clean up
the place, the police are experimenting with white mice to take on the
numerous black rats.

A senior police official in the Haryana city of Karnal was quoted as
saying: We have brought two white rats in on a trial basis. We have
been told that white mice do not eat paper and cloth and are a
deterrent for the black ones.

The Haryana case follows the instances of the income tax office in New
Delhi and the Delhi Development Authority (that deals with land
allotment and real estate development), which are officially allowed
to keep cats.

They have been doing so for years to keep mice from nibbling the
mountains of stored paperwork in the face of the slow computerization
of government offices.

This, of course is also a reflection of overall lax government
functioning, whether in education, law and order, health or
infrastructure such as roads and power, Though India has been
plague-free from 1966, in 1994 there was an outbreak that affected
Maharashtra and Gujarat. The city of Surat was badly impacted.

Indeed, even as India transitions as an emerging economy and global
business hub, the intermeshing of high growth pockets with arenas that
still need reform creates its own set of peculiarities.

Though the government has been one of the slowest to change and move
with the times, there are other outfits battling rodents too. The
state-owned Indian Railways, the biggest network in the world, has
been fighting a losing battle with rats for a while now.

Over a million rats are estimated to infest the extremely dirty and
busy four acre area of the New Delhi railway station, a contrast from
the glitzy malls that sprinkle the city and the spotless metro train
service.

The rodents have been causing a nuisance gnawing at cables, stores and
even affecting signaling systems.

Earlier this month, following several failed attempts, desperate rail
officials handed a contract of Rs1.7 million (US$33,000) to a private
firm to exterminate the menace.

All our earlier attempts failed miserably to control the rats. We
have handed over the area to the firm and hope for a radical change in
the next one month itself,'' said a senior railway official.

Indeed, although India is changing there is a long way to go. For
example, first time foreign visitors to New Delhi are shocked to
witness animals that freely roam the streets, alongside traffic jams,
modern expressways, flyovers and the world class metro. It is
estimated that more than 50,000 cows and buffaloes crowd the roads
along with armies' of monkeys, pigs, stray dogs, camels and an
occasional elephant, often causing chaos and accidents.

Traffic routinely comes to a halt on highways to allow animals to
walk, sleep, defecate and procreate. Animals are sometimes injured,
with stinking carcasses lying in the streets for days given lax
municipal authorities.

All of this is due to a rapidly spreading urban sprawl that devours
erstwhile open, rural areas and villages where the animals once roamed
freely.

The courts have been waging a losing battle to rid Delhi roads of its
animals. Apart from the usual lethargy in implementation, cows are
revered by Hindus, the majority Indian population, so any strong arm
action is a politically sensitive move.

Dogs, meanwhile, proliferate as they are readily adopted by people,
who do not have the space to keep them inside the house, but generally
feed, pamper them and resist attempts by authorities to act.

Such is the nuisance of monkeys in the national capital that a couple
of langurs (bigger-sized white monkeys) continue to be leashed every
day at the forecourts of the Rashtrapati Bhavan (President's House)
and the adjoining north and south blocks that house the prime
minister, top administration and military offices.

The langurs scare off the smaller Indian brown rhesus monkeys that are
a menace in the area, biting officials, running away with secret files
and entering the inner precincts of offices and president's quarters.

There are also reports that for some time stray dogs moved in and out
of the highly protected residence of Indian Prime Minister Manmohan
Singh. There were fears that the strays could easily be fitted with
remote

The Guard Who Found Islam
Terry Holdbrooks stood watch over prisoners at Gitmo. What he saw made him
adopt their faith.

By Dan Ephron | NEWSWEEK
Published Mar 21, 2009
From the magazine issue dated Mar 30, 2009
Army specialist Terry Holdbrooks had been a guard at Guant?namo for about six
months the night he had his life-altering conversation with detainee 590, a
Moroccan also known as the General. This was early 2004, about halfway
through Holdbrooks's stint at Guant?namo with the 463rd Military Police
Company. Until then, he'd spent most of his day shifts just doing his duty.
He'd escort prisoners to interrogations or walk up and down the cellblock
making sure they weren't passing notes. But the midnight shifts were slow. The
only thing you really had to do was mop the center floor, he says. So
Holdbrooks began spending part of the night sitting cross-legged on the ground,
talking to detainees through the metal mesh of their cell doors.

He developed a strong relationship with the General, whose real name is Ahmed
Errachidi. Their late-night conversations led Holdbrooks to be more skeptical
about the prison, he says, and made him think harder about his own life. Soon,
Holdbrooks was ordering books on Arabic and Islam. During an evening talk with
Errachidi in early 2004, the conversation turned to the shahada, the one-line
statement of faith that marks the single requirement for converting to Islam
(There is no God but God and Muhammad is his prophet). Holdbrooks pushed a
pen and an index card through the mesh, and asked Errachidi to write out the
shahada in English and transliterated Arabic. He then uttered the words aloud
and, there on the floor of Guant?namo's Camp Delta, became a Muslim.

When historians look back on Guant?namo, the harsh treatment of detainees and
the trampling of due process will likely dominate the narrative. Holdbrooks,
who left the military in 2005, saw his share. In interviews over recent weeks,
he and another former guard told NEWSWEEK about degrading and sometimes
sadistic acts against prisoners committed by soldiers, medics and interrogators
who wanted revenge for the 9/11 attacks on America. But as the fog of secrecy
slowly lifts from Guant?namo, other scenes are starting to emerge as well,
including surprising interactions between guards and detainees on subjects like
politics, religion and even music. The exchanges reveal curiosity on both
sides—sometimes even empathy. The detainees used to have conversations with
the guards who showed some common respect toward them, says Errachidi, who
spent five years in Guant?namo and was released in 2007. We talked about
everything, normal things, and things [we had] in common, he wrote to NEWSWEEK
in an e-mail from his home in Morocco.

Holdbrooks's level of identification with the other side was exceptional. No
other guard has volunteered that he embraced Islam at the prison (though
Errachidi says others expressed interest). His experience runs counter to
academic studies, which show that guards and inmates at ordinary prisons tend
to develop mutual hostility. But then, Holdbrooks is a contrarian by nature. He
can also be conspiratorial. When his company visited the site of the 9/11
attacks in New York, Holdbrooks remembers thinking there had to be a broader
explanation, and that the Bush administration must have colluded somehow in the
plot.

But his misgivings about Guant?namo—including doubts that the detainees were
the worst of the worst—were shared by other guards as early as 2002. A few
such guards are coming forward for the first time. Specialist Brandon Neely,
who was at Guant?namo when the first detainees arrived that year, says his
enthusiasm for the mission soured quickly. There were a couple of us guards
who asked ourselves why these guys are being treated so badly and if they're
actually terrorists at all, he told NEWSWEEK. Neely remembers having long
conversations with detainee Ruhal Ahmed, who loved Eminem and James Bond and
would often rap or sing to the other prisoners. Another former guard,
Christopher Arendt, went on a speaking tour with former detainees in Europe
earlier this year to talk critically about the prison.

Holdbrooks says growing up hard in Phoenix—his parents were junkies and he
himself was a heavy drinker before joining the military in 2002—helps explain
what he calls his anti-everything views. He has holes the size of quarters in
both earlobes, stretched-out piercings that he plugs with wooden discs. At his
Phoenix apartment, bedecked with horror-film memorabilia, he rolls up both
sleeves to reveal wrist-to-shoulder tattoos. He describes the ink work as a
narrative of his mistakes and addictions. They include religious symbols and
Nazi SS bolts, track marks and, in large letters, the words BY DEMONS BE
DRIVEN. He says the line, from a heavy-metal song, reminds him to be a better
person.

26. Chapter: On injustice and the command to make restitution in cases of
injustice

Allah Almighty says, Nor intercessor will the wrongdoers have, who could be
listened to, (40:18) and the Almighty says, For those that do wrong there is
no helper. (22:71)

206. 'A'isha reported that the Messenger of Allah, (PBUH), said, If anyone
wrongs someone else even to the extent of a piece of land measuring a hand's
width, his neck will be encircled with it from the the seven earths. [Agreed
upon]
207. Abu Musa reported that the Messenger of Allah, (PBUH), said, Allah
prolongs the life of the unjust but when He takes them, He will not let them
escape. Then he recited, 'Such is the iron grip of your Lord when He seizes
cities which do wrong. His grip is painful, violent.' (11:102) [Agreed upon ]

Bismillah [IslamCity] Sayings of Al-Hasan Al-Basree

Abu Hilal said, When al-Hasan finished his hadith, he would say, 'O Allah, you
see our hearts full of idolatry, pride, hypocrisy, showing-off, reputation,
doubt and uncertainty in your deen. 0 Turner of hearts, make our hearts firm in
Your deen and make our deen Straight Islam!'
'Umara ibn Mihran said that al-Hasan was asked, Why do you not visit the
rulers and command them to the correct and forbid them the incorrect? He
replied, 'Thee believer should not waste himself. Their swords precede our
tongues when we speak. They speak thus with their swords. And he made a
striking gesture with his hand.
'Umara said, I did not see anyone whose words are in harmony with his actions
except al-Hasan.
It is related that al-Hasan said, When a young man is devout, we do not
recognise him by his speech. We recognise him by his actions. That is
beneficial knowledge.
'Umara said that al-Hasan told him that he disliked voices trilling when
reciting the Qur'an.
Al-Hasan said, Guard against having a bad opinion of people.
Ar-Rabi' ibn Subayh said, Al-Hasan disliked being praised to his face. If
invocation was made for him, that delighted him.
Ghalib al-Qattan said, I brought al-Hasan a letter from 'Abdu'l-Malik ibn Abi
Bashir and he said, 'Read it.' So I read it and there was a supplication in it.
Al-Hasan said, 'Many a true brother of yours was not actually born of your
mother.'
It is related that 'Imran ibn Khalid al-Khuza'i said that a man told him,
Matar asked al-Hasan about a question and said, 'The fuqaha' oppose you.' He
said, 'May your mother be bereaved, Matar! Do you see a faqih at all? Do you
know what a faqih is? The scrupulous ascetic faqih is the one who does not care
about who is above him nor mock the one below him, and who does not accept
ephemeral rubbish in exchange for the knowledge which Allah has taught him.'
It is related that when al-Hasan saw a funeral, he would say, Praise belongs
to Allah who has not made me part of that which is snatched away. He said, He
would not relate anything that day.
Muhammad ibn 'Umar said, Al-Hasan died in 110. Isma'il ibn 'Ulayya said that
it was in Rajab. There were a hundred days between the deaths of Muhammad ibn
Sirin and him, al-Hasan dying first.
Hammad ibn Zayd said that al-Hasan died on Friday night. He said that Ayyub and
Humayd at-Tawil washed him. He was brought out when the people left. He said,
My father took me with him, and Mu'adh ibn Mu'adh said, Al-Hasan was ten
years older than Muhammad.

Bismillah [IslamCity] Love, Marriage and Hadith: A Triumph for My Sister

Love, Marriage and Hadith: A Triumph for My Sister

My sister is a highly educated woman and very devoted to Allah
Almighty. Unfortunately we disagree most of the time. I have become wary
of getting into arguments with her about Islam because she is very
persistent and will not lose a debate inspite of my considerable skills
at argumentation.

A few years back her life was shattered by the cataclysmic death of her
college going son in a car accident during a storm on the highway which
swept him away along with two of his friends.

The tragedy changed my sister's life in strange ways which
indicates how mysterious the power of Allah is. My sister is now a
constant visitor to her Beloved's house in the far away city of Makkah.
Sometimes she goes there to spend the last ten days of Ramadan,
sometimes for the lesser pilgrimage [Umrah] and sometimes with the
tumult of millions hungering for salvation [the Hajj]. Along the way she
makes new friends, the hijabi types, in South Africa and in the mosques
of Damascus.

She is constantly preaching the spiritual message of the Hadith
of the greatest of all men, Muhammad, peace be on him. I often wonder
how a highly westernized woman, immersed in developments in the medical
sciences, could change so much and accept the deeply traditional wisdom
enshrined in the Hadith.

Now comes my sister's greatest triumph. She carried out her
American-born daughter's wedding according to the Sunnah! She and her
husband invited relatives, friends and acquaintances to their daughter's
wedding. The young man who married my niece accepted Islam and learned
its basic teachings most conscientiously. [Both are medical graduates,
just about.] The task before my sister, on the day of her daughter's
wedding, was to keep both her Muslim and non-Muslim friends happy and
yet not violate the Sunnah: quite a task and quite an accomplishment!

The nikah was performed by an 'Alim from Lebanon. He spoke well
about love and tranquility in the words of the Qur'an. Then my sister
taught the large audience what she calls the LOVE Hadith of the Prophet,
pbuh. These authentic Hadith indicate how Muhammad, pbuh, expressed his
love for his wife 'Ayesha, r.a.. All these ceremonies from Hadith easily
replaced the jahiliyya ceremonies of our national cultures. Members of
the audience made the same symbolic offerings of love and then added a
few dollars of SADAQA to help the needy. Finally my sister reminded the
assembled guests about the miracle of Zam Zam water which was given to a
woman [Hajira, r.a.] who would not accept defeat in the vast expanses of
the Arabian desert.

The Imam from Lebanon was extremely humble and finally [I suspect
at the instigation of my sister] urged me to lead the maghrib prayers
out on the lawn immediately after sunset. I tried to get out of it by
saying that I had forgotten my prayer cap in my car, at which he took
off his own cap and gave it to me. [While we prayed, the non-Muslim part
of the audience watched the glow of the sunset, a beauty from Allah
which no artist can match.]

A non-Muslim lady at the gathering asked me, with reference to the
bridegroom: Why is it that those Christians who marry Muslims embrace
Islam. Why can't they remain Christian? I told her that Muslims love
Jesus, pbuh, and Mary, pbuh, so by embracing Islam, Christians do not
lose Jesus, pbuh. They keep Jesus and Mary, peace be on them, but they
gain Muhammad, pbuh, the Seal of the Prophets. So, they win everything
and do not lose anything. She said; Now, I know what's going on!

I have an envious fear that my sister is moving ahead of me in
Islamic spirituality. I merely talk and write about the Beloved. She
visits the House of the Beloved in Makkah! What goes on there remains a
mystery between her and the Beloved.

With Kind Regards
