The Guard Who Found Islam
Terry Holdbrooks stood watch over prisoners at Gitmo. What he saw made him
adopt their faith.

By Dan Ephron | NEWSWEEK

Published Mar 21, 2009
From the magazine issue dated Mar 30, 2009
Army specialist Terry Holdbrooks had been a guard at Guantánamo for about six
months the night he had his life-altering conversation with detainee 590, a
Moroccan also known as the General. This was early 2004, about halfway
through Holdbrooks's stint at Guantánamo with the 463rd Military Police
Company. Until then, he'd spent most of his day shifts just doing his duty.
He'd escort prisoners to interrogations or walk up and down the cellblock
making sure they weren't passing notes. But the midnight shifts were slow. The
only thing you really had to do was mop the center floor, he says. So
Holdbrooks began spending part of the night sitting cross-legged on the ground,
talking to detainees through the metal mesh of their cell doors.

He developed a strong relationship with the General, whose real name is Ahmed
Errachidi. Their late-night conversations led Holdbrooks to be more skeptical
about the prison, he says, and made him think harder about his own life. Soon,
Holdbrooks was ordering books on Arabic and Islam. During an evening talk with
Errachidi in early 2004, the conversation turned to the shahada, the one-line
statement of faith that marks the single requirement for converting to Islam
(There is no God but God and Muhammad is his prophet). Holdbrooks pushed a
pen and an index card through the mesh, and asked Errachidi to write out the
shahada in English and transliterated Arabic. He then uttered the words aloud
and, there on the floor of Guantánamo's Camp Delta, became a Muslim.

When historians look back on Guantánamo, the harsh treatment of detainees and
the trampling of due process will likely dominate the narrative. Holdbrooks,
who left the military in 2005, saw his share. In interviews over recent weeks,
he and another former guard told NEWSWEEK about degrading and sometimes
sadistic acts against prisoners committed by soldiers, medics and interrogators
who wanted revenge for the 9/11 attacks on America. But as the fog of secrecy
slowly lifts from Guantánamo, other scenes are starting to emerge as well,
including surprising interactions between guards and detainees on subjects like
politics, religion and even music. The exchanges reveal curiosity on both
sides—sometimes even empathy. The detainees used to have conversations with
the guards who showed some common respect toward them, says Errachidi, who
spent five years in Guantánamo and was released in 2007. We talked about
everything, normal things, and things
[we had] in common, he wrote to NEWSWEEK in an e-mail from his home in
Morocco.

Holdbrooks's level of identification with the other side was exceptional. No
other guard has volunteered that he embraced Islam at the prison (though
Errachidi says others expressed interest). His experience runs counter to
academic studies, which show that guards and inmates at ordinary prisons tend
to develop mutual hostility. But then, Holdbrooks is a contrarian by nature. He
can also be conspiratorial. When his company visited the site of the 9/11
attacks in New York, Holdbrooks remembers thinking there had to be a broader
explanation, and that the Bush administration must have colluded somehow in the
plot.

But his misgivings about Guantánamo—including doubts that the detainees were
the worst of the worst—were shared by other guards as early as 2002. A few
such guards are coming forward for the first time. Specialist Brandon Neely,
who was at Guantánamo when the first detainees arrived that year, says his
enthusiasm for the mission soured quickly. There were a couple of us guards
who asked ourselves why these guys are being treated so badly and if they're
actually terrorists at all, he told NEWSWEEK. Neely remembers having long
conversations with detainee Ruhal Ahmed, who loved Eminem and James Bond and
would often rap or sing to the other prisoners. Another former guard,
Christopher Arendt, went on a speaking tour with former detainees in Europe
earlier this year to talk critically about the prison.

Holdbrooks says growing up hard in Phoenix—his parents were junkies and he
himself was a heavy drinker before joining the military in 2002—helps explain
what he calls his anti-everything views. He has holes the size of quarters in
both earlobes, stretched-out piercings that he plugs with wooden discs. At his
Phoenix apartment, bedecked with horror-film memorabilia, he rolls up both
sleeves to reveal wrist-to-shoulder tattoos. He describes the ink work as a
narrative of his mistakes and addictions. They

High-ranking Foreign Office diplomat arrested over anti-Semitic gym tirade
By Emily Andrews and Tamara Cohen
Last updated at 9:41 AM on 09th February 2009

On bail: Diplomat Rowan Laxton is alleged to have launched an anti-Semitic
tirade while on an exercise bike in a gym

A high-ranking diplomat at the Foreign Office has been arrested after
allegations that he launched a foul-mouthed anti-Semitic tirade.

Middle East expert Rowan Laxton, 47, was watching TV reports of the Israeli
attack on Gaza as he used an exercise bike in a gym.

Stunned staff and gym members allegedly heard him shout: 'F**king Israelis,
f**king Jews'. It is alleged he also said Israeli soldiers should be 'wiped off
the face of the earth'.

His rant reportedly continued even after he was approached by other gym users.

After a complaint was made to police, Mr Laxton was arrested for inciting
religious hatred through threatening words and behaviour and bailed until late
next month.

The maximum penalty for inciting religious hatred is a seven-year prison term
or a fine or both.

Mr Laxton, who is still working normally, is head of the South Asia Group at
the Foreign Office, on a salary of around £70,000.

He is responsible for all the UK's diplomacy in that area and for briefing
Foreign Secretary David Miliband, who is Jewish.

Mr Laxton has worked extensively in the Middle East  -  he married a Muslim
woman in 2000  -  and has been deputy ambassador to Afghanistan.

The case could not have come at a worse time for the Foreign Office. Next week,
Britain is hosting an international summit on combating anti-Semitism, with
politicians from 35 countries.

Mr Laxton had gone to the London Business School's gym in Regent's Park after
work on January 27.

An onlooker said: 'I was in the gym around 9pm and I heard this guy shouting
something about f**king Israelis.

'This bald guy was cycling away on his machine in the middle of the exercise
room. When another guy approached him he shouted f**king Jews, f**king
Israelis.

'The gym was pretty full and everyone looked totally shocked.

' That sort of racist language is totally unacceptable. The gym staff called
security and I think the guy was asked to leave.'

Laxton was alleged to have been watching TV reports of the Israeli attack on
Gaza as he used an exercise bike in a gym when he began the tirade
Mark Gardner, deputy director of the Community Security Trust which monitors
anti-Semitism, said: 'There were an unprecedented number of anti-Semitic
incidents during the Gaza conflict.

'This alleged case is particularly shocking, given the position held by the
civil servant in question.

'We must not allow an overseas conflict to cause racism here in Britain and
especially not among civil servants.

'The Jewish community will be rightly appalled to hear of these allegations
against such a senior figure.

'We hope that the appropriate disciplinary actions will be taken forthwith, as
they would be if these comments had been made against any other section of
society.'

A Foreign Office spokesman said: 'It is too early to comment in detail on a
matter that is currently the subject of police enquiries. But we take extremely
seriously any allegation of inappropriate conduct on the part of our staff and
continue to follow developments closely.'

When contacted by the Daily Mail, Mr Laxton denied his comments were
anti-Jewish but refused to answer when asked if they were anti-Israeli.

The Oxford graduate joined the diplomatic service in 1993 and rose rapidly
through the ranks.

He ran the British High Commission in Pakistan for three years before moving to
Afghanistan in 2001. He stayed in Kabul for two years, then returned to London.
He was appointed head of his section last year.

Mr Laxton is believed to be separated from his wife, a banker who is working in
the United Arab Emirates.

The Israel page of the Foreign Office website says: 'The Government has a
shared responsibility to tackle anti-Semitism and all other forms of racism and
prejudice'.

Nurses Banned to Wear Scarf in Jinnah Hospital
Karachi
By Amna
Gilani • Mar 8th, 2009

Nurses students have asserted their power and due to their
stand, the callous administration of Jinnah Hospital and hostels are under fire
and exposed to the public. News about bad attitude towards
the female nursing staff at the Jinnah hospital were circulating for
quite a time but the volcano erupted as one male doctor
pulled down veil of one female nurse and ordered her to not to wear it again in
front of him.

Such complaints are rampant in the
Jinnah hostels and both male doctors and male nurses don’t
leave any chance to harass and tease the female nursing staff. Even they have
access to their hostels and with the help of
guards they often come into the corridors of the hostels. As the nursing girls
of Karachi Jinnah Hospital started their vehement protests against this
high-handedness, the administration tried to hush the matter
and kept the girls imprisoned in the hostel by force for two hours with
the help of guards.

Hostel girls of Karachi hospital have also complained that the
male doctors don’t accept male nurses with them and only
work when the female nurse of their choice is given to them and these
doctor often fight among themselves for the attractive young nurses. Now as the
things have turned more bad and administration banned the
scarf, all the nursing staff is out in protest.

These so called Muslims are worse than the kuffar public. They
should get a beating of their lives to get them in
line.

Bismillah [IslamCity] Israelis who refuse to fight Arabs

2009-03-08 Thread Hafiz Ayaz Ali Qureshi

Father, forgive me, I will not
fight for your Israel
Omer
Goldman, daughter of a former Mossad chief, tells why she prefers jail to the
military draft

Igal
Sarna

Omer Goldman is a pretty girl, slender as a model. Never still, very
restless, she is filled with anxiety by the expected loss of her freedom. For
months before she refused to be drafted into the Israel Defence Forces, she went
to a psychologist every week to prepare for what was to come: incarceration in a
cell in a military prison.
I met her several times last month in an apartment with other girls who are
conscientious objectors. Together they would hand out flyers against Israel’s
occupation of the West Bank and Gaza at the gates of a high school like the one
she left a year ago.
On her last day of freedom as a civilian, I saw her at the gates of the
intake base to which she had received orders to report for
induction into a two-year stint with the defence forces, like every Israeli
girl. She had come to refuse the draft, to be tried and to be imprisoned
immediately.
Several dozen supporters showed up – members of Anarchists Against the Wall,
her mother and a few girlfriends – and she stayed close to them as though she
were trying to delay the end, the moment when she would clash all alone with the
army.
For Omer, this transition is sharper and more surprising than for most
conscientious objectors: she is the daughter of the former
deputy head of Mossad, the Israeli intelligence service, the man who nearly
became its head.
Omer grew up all her life in the warm bosom of a huge security establishment
that has now become an enemy rather than a friend. Her father appears in the
newspapers as N. He was a senior intelligence officer who transferred to Mossad
and climbed to the top until in 2007 he became the deputy to Mossad’s chief,
Meir Dagan, now considered the most powerful mystery man in the Israeli security
system.
N, whose speciality is Iran, was spoken of as Dagan’s designated successor,
but Dagan had no intention of retiring. Differences of opinion developed between
the two strong bosses, and N resigned in June 2007.
This was the time when his 18-year-old daughter Omer, a pampered child of the
wealthy suburb of Ramat Hasharon, was beginning to move away from the usual
high-school- to-army trajectory.
In parallel to her father’s struggle and his resignation from Mossad, Omer
rebelled against the path he had paved for her and went to have a look at
Palestinian life on the other side of
the wall. Call this an adolescent’s rebellion against her father or a
battle for the heart of a father who had left home.
She is one of about 40 pupils who signed a school-leavers’ protest letter
this year. Thirty-eight years ago the first such letter – a counterblast against
the occupation and the war of attrition, sent by pupils in the final year of my
secondary school to Golda Meir, the prime minister – caused an uproar.
There have been other letters since then, and although the furore is not what
it was, in Israel conscientious objection still arouses
cold, self-righteous wrath.
Omer told me that the crucial moment of her metamorphosis
occurred this year when she went to a Palestinian village where the Israeli army
had set up a roadblock. Someone she had considered her enemy all her life stood
beside her and someone who was supposed to be defending her opened fire at her.

“We were sitting by the roadside talking and soldiers
came along and after a few seconds they received an order and fired gas grenades
and rubber bullets at us. Then it struck me, to my
astonishment, that the soldiers were following an order without thinking. For
the first time in my life, an Israeli soldier raised his weapon and fired at
me.”
And when you told your father? “Dad was astonished and angry that I had been
there and endangered my life. After that we had conversations. He supported me
as his daughter and we have a good relationship, but he is decidedly opposed to
what I do and even more to my refusal to serve in the army.
“At first he thought this was a passing phase of adolescence and later he
understood that this is coming from a place deep inside me. He and I have very
similar characters. I, too, fight to the end for what I believe in. But we are
opposites ideologically.”
When I ask more about her father, Omer smiles and does not answer. A rare
moment of silence.
On September 23 she refused to serve in the army, was
tried and was sent to prison for 21 days. This week she will be tried again –
and again, until the army tires or she tires.
In two weeks’ time my own son Noam is due to join the army, and I will be
accompanying him to the base where I last saw Omer Goldman. Unlike her, Noam
intends to do his military service. I understand them both.

 News Desk

Oslo, May 31, 2008 -- A Norwegian Comedian with Pakistani origin in a stage
show  at Norwegian Town set to burn Quran, the Holly Book of Islam but she
avoided to do it by saying, burning of the Quran can cause more power to the
book. 32 year Old, Shabana Rehman is famous for her controversial attitude
towards Islam and Muslims. According to the media reports, the stage show was
held  recently at Lillehammer in the context of a cultural festival.

At the inaugural session of the show at Lillehammer, she was received by cheers
but when she picked up a lighter and Quran in other hand and said, this is
Quran. People present at the hall became surprised and totally silent. Then
eying the Quran, she started to say, there are many books in the world but this
book has more power. Indicating towards Quran and holding one corner of the
Holly Book, she kept quite a while and then turning her eyes to the
participants said, if I burn the book then, it would be come more powerful.
Addressing the people she concluded, do not worry, I shall not burn the book.

Then she put the Quran on the table and turned off the lighter. According to
the media's reports, such event was a amazed occasion for the people and even
one of the participants said, if she had started to burn the book, I was ready
to cool the fire by putting my jacket on it. This was a very shocking event for
not only Muslims of Norway but it also  a large number of the Norwegians
expressed concern on that. See Video: http://www.dagblade t.no/kultur/

Bismillah [IslamCity] Shoe hurled at Israeli ambassador in Stockholm

Shoe hurled at Israeli ambassador in Stockholm,Sweden.

The ambassador was giving a lecture about the Israeli elections when he was

A woman has thrown a shoe at the Israeli ambassador to
Sweden as he was giving a lecture on Israel's forthcoming elections.
The shoe hit Benny Dagan in the chest during a seminar held at the
University of Stockholm on Wednesday, a local police official said.

Ylva
Kronheffer, a board member of the Stockholm Association of Foreign
Affairs, the student association which organised the seminar, said she
was sitting in the front row and suddenly a shoe was flying over my
head.
She added that another person threw two books at the envoy but missed.

The girl who threw the shoe asked the policemen to give it
back to her. It was a red Nike shoe, Kronheffer said.
The two protesters, who were shouting insults, were escorted out of the room by
police.
They were taken to a local police station but were released after being
questioned.
It was not known whether they were students at the university.
Dagan continued his lecture after a short break and a heated
discussion followed the seminar before being interrupted by the
moderator.
A protester who threw a shoe at Wen Jiabao, the Chinese premier,
during a speech at Britain's Cambridge University earlier this week,
was charged with a public order offence.
An Iraqi journalist who threw his shoes at George Bush, the former
US president, during a press conference in Baghdad in December, was
arrested and is awaiting his trial.

Dutch MP Geert Wilders deported after flying to

A
controversial Dutch politician has been sent back to Holland after
trying to enter Britain to show his anti-Muslim film in the House of
Lords.

to Britain on public order grounds

Geert Wilders had been invited to Westminster to show his 17-minute
film Fitna, which criticises the Koran as a fascist book, by a member
of the House of Lords. But on Tuesday Jacqui Smith, the Home
Secretary refused Mr Wilders entry because his opinions would threaten
community security and therefore public security in the UK. Mr Wilders went
ahead with his trip anyway, and flew from Amsterdam to London on a British
Midland flight. When he arrived at Heathrow airport he was met by two plain
clothed officers from the UK Border Agency. As he was being led away, Mr Wilders
said: I am not nervous but is this how Great Britain welcomes a
democrat?Dutch Foreign Minister Maxime Verhagen said Holland would press for a
reversal of the travel ban. Earlier
on the flight, Mr Wilders had launched a savage attack on the
Government. He said: They (the British Government) are the biggest
bunch of cowards in Europe. I'm coming because I am invited by
one of your members of parliament. I'm not provocative. I am an elected
political representative. I am a democrat. I use my freedom of speech.
I am using all the democratic means I have.Mr Wilders has urged the Dutch
government to ban the Koran and warned of a tsunami of Islam swamping the
Netherlands. His
film Fitna sparked violent protests around the Muslim world last year
for linking verses in the religious text with footage of terrorist
attacks. Mr Wilders had been due to attend a screening of Fitna, organised by
Ukip peer Lord Pearson, in the Lords.Lord Pearson said the screening would go
ahead yesterday with or without Mr Wilders. In
a joint statement, he and cross-bench peer Baroness Cox said they were
promoting freedom of speech and accused the Government of appeasing
militant Islam. They added: Geert Wilders' Fitna film,
available on the web, is not a threat to anyone. It merely suggests how
the Koran has been used by militant Islamists to promote and justify
their violence. They react in fury and menace to our intention
to show the film and have boasted that their threats of aggressive
demonstrations prevented its previous showing in the Mother of
Parliaments. In the Lords, Lord Pearson asked Lord West of
Spithead, a home office minister, said: Do you think this situation
would occur if Mr Wilders had said ban the Bible? Lord West
replied: I certainly don't think we are guilty of appeasement in any
way whatsoever. The Government and I are great believers in freedom of
expression. This is based not purely on Fitna, on that
particular film. It is based on a range of factors, including
prosecution in the Netherlands for incitement and discrimination and
for other statements as well. The National Secular Society
said Miss Smith had made a mistake in denying an application by a
democratically-elected politician from a sovereign state who wants to
come and express an opinion. The ban was supported by the
Muslim Council of Great Britain. A spokesman said: Geert Wilders has
been an open and relentless preacher of hate - there is little
difference between his views and those of the far right.

Bismillah [IslamCity] UK activists boycott Israel

2009-02-11 Thread Hafiz Ayaz Ali Qureshi

UK activists boycott Israel

UK will import many of its Valentines flowers from Israel
Saturday, 07, Feb 2009 12:03
By Laura Miller
Demonstrators are planning nationwide protests today to boycott the sale of
Israeli goods on UK high-streets.
The national Boycott Israeli Goods (BIG) campaign, led by a coalition of
pro-Palestine and anti-war groups, aims to impact on Valentines Day sales of
flowers, many of which Israel exports to the UK.
David Wilson, spokesperson for Stop the War, one of the groups supporting the
campaign, told politics.co. uk: Valentines Day is the perfect day for love to
all, and for people to remember those suffering abroad.
He compared the action to the boycott of South African goods during apartied.
Apartied herded one people into a caged area of the country. What is Gaza if
it's not comparable to that? he said.
The largest protest is expected in Middlesex at Carmel-Agrexco, the Israeli
national exporter of fruit and vegetables and importer of large quantities of
flowers to the UK.
All the large supermarket chains will be targeted, as well as Barlays bank and
Marks and Spencers, which has incurred heavy criticism in the past from
pro-Palestine campaigners over claims the company's owner, Phillip Green,
supports Israel through business deals and investments.
Speaking to politics.co. uk a spokesperson for M S denied claims the chain
has a political interest in importing goods from Israel.
We don't have a special relationship with Israel, we have a relationship with
individual farmers, she said.
At the moment we don't even source very much from Israel, maybe ten out of 500
lines.
Palestine Solidarity Campaign, one of the main organisers of today's protests,
is also backed in the BIG campaign by the Jewish Boycott Israeli Goods group.
Mark Gardner of the Community Security Trust, an organisation that acts to
prevent and record violence against British Jews, said that while Jewish
participation in the BIG campaign helped represent the community's diversity,
it also added to the negative affect such campaigns have on British Jews.
British Jews have no control or influence over what's happening in the Middle
East. Campaigns like this can have the best motives in the world but it doesn't
change the negative impact of the Jewish community, he told politics.co. uk.
The involvement of a small number of vocal Jews allows others to point the
finger at the large silent, blameless majority. This affects Jewish morale,
because it encourages people to regard Jews as moral reprobabtes.
Outside No 10 Downing Street on Sunday a separate protest, Children for the
Children of Gaza, has been organised to show solidarity with the children in
Gaza and Palestine on the whole.

Doesn't that headline just put a
smile on your face? You're not the only one. It's great to see that the
significant human effort augmented by billions of dollars invested in
Pakistan's IT infrastructure and skill-development are bearing tangible
fruit. There are several areas where Pakistan is leading the pack already,
and others where it is threatening to.

Pakistan is the most connected country in South
   Asia, with the highest
   teledensity
Pakistan's communications costs are lower than any
   other country in the region
Pakistan has the world's largest biometric
   database (NADRA);
this system (not the data)  is now being provided to allied
   countries
   Pakistan has the world's
   largest WiMAX network

Pakistan has one of the world's
most aggressive Fibre-to-the- Home (FTTH) rollouts
Pakistan has one of the highest rates of cellular
connectivity growth in the world (According to PTA 2007's report the rate
of growth in Pakistan's mobile sector is fourth highest in the world)
   Pakistan was
the winner of the 2007 GSM industry association award
   The US
is importing UAVs designed and built in Pakistan to protect America's
borders
With WLL (CDMA), WiMAX, GSM and FTTH, Pakistan is
pretty much leading the pack in terms of diversity and breadth of
   connectivity
   According to Gartner, Pakistan
is a first category offshoring location; this ranking has grown by
leaps and bounds

   Pakistani companies won
several awards at Asia's APICTA startup/innovation conference and were
considered the most
interesting and cutting edge in Asia
   The world's youngest
Microsoft Certified Professional is a Pakistani and so if the world's
   youngest Cisco CCNA professional
   Pakistani students excelled
in MIT's global software talent competition
   Citations of Pakistani
   scientific publications are rising sharply
   Over two dozen Pakistani
scientists are working on the Large Hadron Collider; the grandest
experiment in the history of
   Physics

And I tire listing all of these out…
there are so many more. The point is that the Pakistani IT industry is
rapidly developing and this is most definitely an area where significant
progress is being made, damning all the torpedoes and naysayers. Pretty
exciting on its own, right? But progress  in IT doesn't just mean
progress in IT. It means a vibrant economy, better healthcare through
Telemedicine,
increased efficiency in government through record automation (e.g. land
records project), a more effective defence, increased outreach for higher
  education and much more.

  Technology is a transformational
vehicle for our society. And we're just now starting to see the impact. Many
times, progress in specific areas will appear slow, but in part that is
explained by the exponential curves normally associated with technology
adoption. When you start small, high growth rates aren't 'visible on the
ground'
for the first few months or years because the overall numbers remain small.
But this changes when you hit the knee of the curve, at which point things
are fundamentally transformed and are altered for ever.

  In Pakistan, these transformations
have occurred in many areas already, and will continue to occur in numerous
others. Frankly, I just consider myself lucky to be around to watch the
  awesome progress unfold!

Bismillah [IslamCity] Images from Israeli Terrorist attack on Ghazza

2009-01-04 Thread Hafiz Ayaz Ali Qureshi

Over 200 Tons of bombs. Of course no innocent civilians were
targeted, These Zionist Pigs deserve thousands of Martyrdom (suicide) attacks.

Please encourage your Imams to make Qunoot for the Muslims in Ghazza.

O Allah! Send your rage upon the Zionist pigs - the scum of the earth - as well
as those Idolic Muslim Rulers who prevent the Muslims from waging Jihad and
helping their brothers. O Allah hear our call! O Allah exact revenge on Husni
La Mubarak, the Traitor of the two Holy Mosques - Abdul-Kalb Aal As-Salool,
and all others who have acted traitorously to this religion! O Allah guide the
Ummah of Muhammad to raise the flag of Jihad. O Allah! have mercy on our
oppressed brothers and sisters in Ghazza and everywhere else. O Allah! Guide
Hamas to leave the dirty games of politics,
democracy and compromise and to rise and wage Jihad against Your enemies! O
Allah guide them to establish the Sharia! O Allah! Establish the Islamic State
of Iraq and strengthen them, that it may be the launching pad for Jihad against
the Jews.

Bismillah [IslamCity] Hijab-officer who became a role model...

2009-01-04 Thread Hafiz Ayaz Ali Qureshi

Hijab-officer who became a role model
The police constable, Rukshana Begum (24) is the woman who has the credit for
the hijab now being part of the police uniform in parts of England. But in the
whole of the nation, there are only 10 police officers who wear the hijab at
work.

Rukshana Begum completed her police training in 2003, but it was not before the
end of 2006 that she seriously started to think about wearing the hijab. She
aired the idea with her boss. In the little police district of Cambridgeshire,
with 2900 employees, a specially-made hijab for police officers was made,
authorized and launched.

«That the policeforce went as far as incorporating the hijab in the standard
uniform was quiet touching,» says Rukshana Begum, two years later. The 24-year
old is born and raised in Cambridge, with parents from Bangladesh. She has been
a follower of Islam all her life.

Norwegian case
In Norway, the Ministry of Police is in the process of deciding their stance on
whether the muslim head-wear whould be allowed together with the police
uniform. The matter is being considered after Aftenbladet on 25th September
wrote about the muslim woman, Keltoum Hasnaoui Missoum from Sandnes, who wanted
to apply to the Police Academy. Missoum wanted to wear the hijab, but was
denied... The reason: The police uniform should be one of value-neutrality.
Rukshana Begum does not agree with the argument.

No to neutrality
«Neutrality is a good thing, but I don't think anyone should have to limit
themselves when it comes to practising their faith. For many, faith is more
important than everything else. So I disagree with that statement. Here in
Cambridgeshire, several police officers where a turban, and that has never been
a problem.

The police there says that Cambridgeshire is a country area of England, with
many nationalities and few religious conflicts. The proportion of muslims in
the police district is on a par with the national average of 3.3 per cent of
the population.

Role model
When Begum started to wear the uniform-hijab, she received press coverage.
People soon started recognizing her. She received words of support, especially
from the muslim community. «I was not prepared for that. The only thing I
wanted was to be able to wear the hijab at work, but I was suddenly a role
model for others. That was a nice bi-product.

Only ten wear the hijab
Even so, few have chosen to follow in Begum's footsteps. Cambridgeshire
launched the specially adapted hijab in June 2007. Metropolitan Police in
London authorized the use of the hijab ten years ago, but has not incorporated
a special uniform hijab. At present, there are only ten women police officers
who use the hijab at work in the whole of England, according to the Association
of Muslim Police (AMP) of the London police. There are no reliable statistics
on the number of women police officers in England.

No negative experiences
Keltoum Hasnaoui Missoum from Sandnes experienced harassment after she went to
the press with her uniform question. Begum has never met anything like that –
even as a patroling police officer. «In general it's always been a positive
experience: The hijab means that you show who you are sooner. No, I haven't
experienced anything verbal, or any kind of expressions that make me feel
uncomfortable.»

Breaks barriers
« Have you experienced positive things as a result of showing who you are?»

«It has happened when patroling that people talk to me, rather than my
colleague. That's not because I'm better at what I do, but because they feel
there is a connection between us.»

«People who come to live here may have bad experiences with the police in their
homeland. Seeing a muslim woman as a police officer may help to break
barriers.. If they are the victims of crime , it might be easier for them to
report it, I think,» says Begum.

Oppression
One argument used in the debate is that the use of the hijab is thought by many
to be a demand on women in islam, and this means that it should be viewed
differently than the wearing of a cross around the neck.

«The hijab is not like a necklace I can take off. When you first start to wear
it, it's for life,» says Begum. «Should the police refrain from using a garment
that many associate with the oppression of women?»

«No, I don't see that as a problem. I don't understand how people can say that
women are oppressed. With the hijab, I feel respected and dignified, but not in
a snobby way. With the hijab, you are protected from evil, and I feel safe and
free. If you let people oppress you, you will probably be oppressed.»

Adapted work-day
Cambridgeshire police district has implemented several measures for muslim
officers. The police station has a quiet room for those who want to pray,
offers shift changes during Ramadan so that fasting officers do not need to
work evenings, and half an hour extra for lunch on Fridays, for those who want
