Instead of choosing one of his assistants or his children, he decided something different. He called young people in the kingdom together one day. He said, It is time for me to step down and choose the next emperor. I have decided to choose one of you. The kids were shocked! But the emperor continued. I am going to give each one of you a seed today. One very special seed. I want you to plant the seed, water it and come back here after one year from today with what you have grown from this one seed. I will then judge the plants that you bring, and the one I choose will be the next emperor! One boy named Ling was there that day and he, like the others, received a seed. He went home and excitedly told his mother the story. She helped him get a pot and planting soil, and he planted the seed and watered it carefully. Every day he would water it and watch to see if it had grown. After about three weeks, some of the other youths began to talk about their seeds and the plants that were beginning to grow. Ling kept checking his seed, but nothing ever grew. 3 weeks, 4 weeks, 5 weeks went by. Still nothing. By now, others were talking about their plants but Ling didn't have a plant, and he felt like a failure. Six months went by, still nothing in Ling's pot. He just knew he had killed his seed. Everyone else had trees and tall plants, but he had nothing. Ling didn't say anything to his friends, however. He just kept waiting for his seed to grow. A year finally went by and all the youths of the kingdom brought their plants to the emperor for inspection. Ling told his mother that he wasn't going to take an empty pot. But honest about what happened, Ling felt sick to his stomach, but he knew his mother was right. He took his empty pot to the palace. When Ling arrived, he was amazed at the variety of plants grown by the other youths. They were beautiful in all shapes and sizes. Ling put his empty pot on the floor and many of the other kinds laughed at him. A few felt sorry for him and just said, Hey nice try. When the emperor arrived, he surveyed the room and greeted the young people. Ling just tried to hide in the back. What great plants, trees and flowers you have grown, said the emperor. Today, one of you will be appointed the next emperor! All of a sudden, the emperor spotted Ling at the back of the room with his empty pot. He ordered his guards to bring him to the front. Ling was terrified. The emperor knows I'm a failure! Maybe he will have me killed! When Ling got to the front, the Emperor asked his name. My name is Ling, he replied. It is a very good example to other girls to observe Islamic teachings in terms of dress code and modesty. She is standing in a long blue gown in a gym at Bridgeview's Universal School. Her head is covered in a white scarf pulled tightly around her neck. Not a wisp of hair is showing. Around her, other high school girls dressed in similar flowing robes shoot a few casual baskets while they wait for practice to begin. There are no men in the gym - no male coaches, no boys from school, no dads or brothers in the bleachers. So when the coach arrives and the real training starts, they can peel off their Islamic dress, exposing their sweat pants and short-sleeved T-shirts underneath. We'd run if we noticed a man peeking in the window, Hamoud, 16, explains. We're not allowed to be seen by guys without (Islamic dress). We've all learned to accept that. But the girls can't accept that they have only been allowed to compete against girls basketball teams from other Muslims schools. There are only four in the Chicago area, they complain, and their competition isn't exactly tough. Since last year they've been beseeching Coach Farida Abusafa, a 26- year-old English teacher who also coaches sports, to ask public schools and non-Muslim private schools if their girls teams would be willing to compete against girls from the Universal School. The problem is that the schools would have to agree to bar men and boys above the age of puberty from watching the games. It's not like it's a sin to play a public school, Abusafa said. The problem is the males coming to the game. The dilemma underscores the balancing act many Muslims perform as they toggle between American and Middle Eastern culture. Many of the these young girls straddle the divide with ease, yapping on their cell phones at the mall one minute, observing the school's strict gender segregation the next. But the girls are also mindful of the challenges they face. It's something you have to decide you want to do, said Shaylin Najeeullah, 16, a member of the varsity basketball team. You can stay true to what you believe in or you can conform to everybody else and get lost. The Universal School's principal, Farhat Siddiqi, said there was no reason the girls wouldn't be allowed to play teams from public schools or other private schools as long as the prohibition barring men was strictly observed. But she worried that parents from other schools might object, she said. I don't want to have to impose our religious requirements on anyone else, Siddiqi said. The Universal School, a co-ed private school located next to the Mosque Foundation near 93rd Street and Harlem Avenue, is already a member of the Illinois High School Association. Dear brother Ali Assalaam Alaikum, After going through your article I felt that I should put some points which raised in my mind. Firstly I want to make it clear that religion covers almost all of the aspects of life i.e. Social, Economic, Political, Industrial, Personal etc. etc. This issue is a long discussed one in the community. In the light of current situation where you see, if a lonely girl or a lady even with children awaiting a taxi, many private cars bunk their horn first and stop at her to check the chances of taking her with them. When women get on the driving seat you will see more problems on the road. Leave the young people the aged ones will make more advances to the lady driver. Naturally you need lady police officers to control in case of women drivers. Also in case of traffic accidents it will be difficult to handle if a lady driver is injured at any point. Either you have to wait till a lady cop comes or you have to help the injured lady. Women's joblessness will be solved to a certain extent but in police stations also you have to create a separate cell for lady police officers. Wherever you find men and women mixed together you will face social problems of all types. We cannot deny that there are good and bad in every community and gender. I think if you are willing to allow women to drive you have to cover all related topics before hand so that you will not be at the junction of problems. Terrorism in all its diverse forms is, undoubtedly, a temporary or permanent reaction to some ideas, groups or methods springing from a narrow environment. It struggles against all opposing views and differing thoughts and aims at a single viewpoint and decision. A terrorist group that promotes murder and destruction is dangerous. Even more dangerous is the intellectual terrorism that targets killing the freedom of thought and _expression_ of both the individual and society. Intellectual terrorism aims at the total destruction of all social achievements. It is an irony that terrorism utilizes the facilities, regulations and broad values of society to suppress those who differ with the terrorists. The controversy over the issue of womens driving is an example of the danger of mixing social issues with religious ones. The motive is to ban women driving with the help of a religious fatwa so that all discussion on the subject would be conclusively ended. Driving, however, is only a worldly matter and is far from religion. What is halal (lawful or permitted) and what is haraam (unlawful or not permitted) are very clearly defined by the Prophet (peace be upon him) who also said You know better about worldly matters. The debate about wo men driving has crossed all reasonable limits. Why are Paintings of Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) Sacrilegious?

When Islam reached its potential bringing the entire Arabian
Peninsula into its fold, Prophet Mohammad became the statesman, the
general and the religious leader.
His teachings of belief in one God, equality of humankind and seeking
spirituality made his followers put him on the pedestal. As has
happened with all the great prophets, people were considering even
the dirt he walked on as holy.
Even to this day, we hang pictures; make statues of our heroes and
our leaders. Every king of era, or head of a town or state, had his
portraits in public places and some of them had their statutes placed
in every town. At that time period, people had the habit of making
individuals divine.
Although he was the chosen one to deliver the message of God to
mankind, the Prophet himself remained a simple soul. A few things
relating to the subject about him;
In one of his sermons, he had said, that I am as human as you are,
and when I die, please do not bury me in a special grave, bury me in
an unmarked grave like every one else.
I am a mortal and a messenger, the only one you have to worship is
God and not anyone else.
He stressed on individual responsibility to the point that he said to
his own daughter that, on the day of reckoning, it will be her own
deeds that will be her salvation.
He lived a simple life, although he had the whole world to him, he
chose to live in a small house and with no material accumulation. He
was the King, but he did not live in opulence, he wanted to lead a
spiritual life by example.
Does every Muslim follow his teachings to the Core? No! We are humans
and we do make mistakes, an allowance has been made by God through
the concept of forgiveness.
Can the world make judgments about Islam and Muslims with the acts of
less than 1/10th of one percent of Muslims? (1% of 1.3 Billion == 13
Million - 10th of a percent comes to 1.3 Million - state department
had released figures last year that about 450,000 people have
enlisted in organizations that believe in violence. It is 1/30th of
1% and to call the protest a representation of Muslims is grossly
flawed.
The prophet saw the dangers in misplaced divinity, he wanted people
to worship the one supreme God and not put any one or anything else
on par with him. By the way, as in other faiths, God does not have a
gender in Islam.
He made a ruling that no one should paint his portrait, or put up his
statue anywhere, he was making a strong point that people should, at
not time make any mortal human, the divine. Only God is to be
worshipped and no one else.
Over the years, Muslims have guarded this principle with great care.
You will never see a Muslim worship any one but God. Muslims draw
their pride in his teachings of equality, simplicity and
spirituality. This is one simple reason why Muslims consider any
painting of the prophet as sacrilegious. When Muslims stand shoulder
to shoulder to pray to God, all distinctions between intellectuals
and ordinary, rich or poor vanish, and when they chant Alla hu Akbar,
i.e., God is Great, they are saying we are mortals and all of us are

Karen Armstrong, one of the most eminent experts on the Middle East and author of the biography of Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him), has pointed to the historical animosity that western culture (through its orientalist literature) has always carried against Islam when she said - These cartoons depicting Muhammad as a terrorist are utterly inaccurate, feeding into an Islamophobia that has been a noxious element in Western culture since the time of the Crusades. We are told that in Universities in Europe and America Journalists are often taught that freedom of speech ends where the sensitivities of people begin. It is such a paradox that on the one hand the Journalists learn one thing at College and at the same time stand up in solidarity with your Jylland-Posten by publishing the same caricatures in their own newspapers and magazines. However there are exceptions such as our own media in India and so too the big Networks such as CNN and BBC who have consciously avoided publication of these offensive caricatures in order not to hurt the sentiments of the Muslims. The above verse should suffice to amply demonstrate why it is not possible for us to accept even a hint of disrespect to any of our prophet(s). When we say we believe, let it be understood that we indeed do. Hence the question of accepting such lampooning of our Prophets and the revealed Books as a joke is simply out of the question. You and your government will do well Mr. Prime Minister to note what the famous Historian Lamar Tine had to say about the greatness of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). In the words of Tine: If greatness of purpose, smallness of means and astounding results are the three criteria of human genius, who could dare to compare any great man in modern history with Muhammad? The most famous men created arms, laws and empires only. They founded, if anything at all, no more than material powers which often crumbled away before their eyes. there is one more verse of Quraan which says (the meaning) Women who cover
their faces become lucent with noor. If I get the exact wordings I will surely
send you. First and foremost a man or a woman must have fear of Allah in
his/her heart. According to the Prophet of Allah (Muhammad-ur-Rasool-Ullah
Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) AT-TAQWAA-U HAA HUNAA and he has
pointed his index finger to the heart 3 times and repeated his words.

When our Prophet
(Muhammad Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) prayed to Allah the Almighty for three
things the two were accepted by Allah and the third one which was for the unity
of our Ummah was not accepted. In the light of this we can say the unity
amongst muslims is next to impossible. My brother, in the whole world wherever
you go you will see muslims are facing problems of all sorts. On the other hand
you will find few people who have much more than they need for their normal
life but they are not willing to help their muslim brothers sisters.
Due to the difference in
opinion so many organizations are formed by the scholars of our community
through out the world. I wonder when you say a scholar he is blessed with more
wisdom and knowledge by Allah (s.w.t) but he is unable to unite other scholars
to get them on one platform. Forget about munafiqeen who were there (at the
time of our Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) are present today and will be
present till the day of judgement. So there is nobody to work hard for the
unity of our ummah and we have to work in our own capacity for the benefit of
our muslim brothers because on the day of judgement when Allah (s.w.t) ask us
what did you do for muslims we can atleast say that we have put our limited
resources for the muslim brothren.
May Allah accept our good
deeds and help us get rid off our bad and evil deeds Aameen.

health, peace and tranquility. After going through your email, in which you
have invited suggestions, I would like to scribble few words for your perusal.
Dear brother in Islam I personally
prefer to have a common minimum program for our training course in Islamic teachings.
The number of jamaats we have the differences vary from jamaat to jamaat. Every
jamaat's president would like to have his own course of training. At least for
the purpose of presenting Islam to non-muslims, we must have only one criteria
and that criteria should be designed with the joint efforts of all learned, able
and top class ulemaa not just a common aalim. Apart from this we, as an
individuals, must present Islam to people in whatever good way we can and
wherever we get a chance to do so. Sometimes we do not know that even a small
stone may break the ice of non-believers and they may accept Islam.

To Brother Farrukh through Islamcity. Dear Brother in Islam Assalaam Alaikum, Your storry (not so long but fictious at the same time) has attracted me to reply you. You may agree with me if I say when a person speaks he speaks according to the level of knowledge and wisdom of his own personality. What I am writing here is also within the knowledge I gained upto now. My dear brother, when our Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) has said sight of the moon means one amongst us must see the moon with his eyes. If there is cloud cover and you are intended to see the moon with the help of any modern device it is a different story. In my opinion we can celebrate Eid only when we see the moon. Every society face problems of different type and if we have some problem we must sort it out according to the rulings of Islamic law. If we do not posses much knowledge it is the responsibility of the one who is knowledgeable and has an authority over the rulings of Islamic law. We, as common person, have to obey the orders of the authorities and that is our duty. Allah (subhanahu wa ta'ala) will ask the authorities on the day of judgement about their mistakes (if any). Beginning of every Arabic month is with the sight of the moon so also Ramadan. To add to your knowledge, learned people say that Arabic months can be 29 days or 30 days neither less nor more. Also no 3 months can be same i.e. 29 days 29 days 29 days. If last 2 months were 29 days the third month should be of 30 days. We should try to do our best in our own capacity and not intervene in the matters which should be decided by the authorities. According to my knowledge calculating the dates according to the position of moon is not allowed in Islamic law. If you take into account sight of the moon this will surely be a contradiction. Entirely unaware that the droll dome in the central square is in fact the ceiling of a glittering underworld of designer stores and food courts, as I journeyed earlier in the evening I found myself taken back by this `other' life. My apartment is so central that military police patrol the streets where all about abound embassies, government offices, and of course, the notorious mafia hang-outs. Imagine, a country where the number of windows along the front façade of a home determines its tax. The local joke being a 2 windowed front being that of a prosperous man, a 3 windowed front that of a government official, a 4 windowed front that of a corrupt government official, and a 5 windowed front the home of a mafia member. It seems that at this time of year, while the over-ground areas are as empty as if someone has sounded a Chernobyl II bell, the people have in fact congregated in this under-world. The parallel to the Islamic psyche particularly in light of the recent Eid festivities are uncanny. On the left we have the ultra Salafi types, where self styled clerics decide it encumbering to lecture the attendees in Arabic knowing full well that less than 5% of the congregation can actually understand what the imam says. I always wonder whether these enlightened imams pause for a moment and wonder why it is that the passion which they step into midway through their speech draws upon deaf ears as the congregation who do not understand the language gaze into oblivion wondering how much longer this will take. On the right we have the ultra Sufi types. I must rock, can't say this prayer without `feeling the vibe', who would have thought that the same momentum driving hasedic jews being mimicked by the pious Muslims. That is, assuming you can cut your way through the confused philosophy which drives many interpretations of various sufi traditions. Either way, it seems that if you don't fall into one camp, you fall into the other. Actually, no. This evening, strolling through what seemed like endless corridors of this secret Kiev underworld, I discovered those who were stuck in the middle. Neither exiting to one side or the other, they have created their own niches in which they live in their underworld.
