Dear Secretary Donald Rumsfeld CC: President George W. Bush CC: Vice President Dick Cheney I'm writing this letter because I am worried about my son. Over the past few years, he has taken up an interest in Islam, of all things. I've found him reading such Muslim propaganda as Malcom X's biography and "The Inner Dimensions of Islamic Worship." He even has his own copy of the Koran! He gets many of these books from our local library, so I wonder how long it will be before he ends up on a suspected terrorist list. That's why I want to ask you about a possible "Scared Straight" program at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba. I've read many news articles about the innovative techniques you are using there to isolate terrorists and other Muslim extremists from the rest of the civilized world. I think my son could benefit from an extended stay at the facility, especially if he didn't know how long it would be before he was released. The prospect of indefinite incarceration without charges or legal representation is a very effective tool against these terrorist scum, I've heard. A regular jail or prison in the United States just wouldn't do the trick with my son. If he saw prisoners talking with lawyers or enjoying other freedoms, I think it would send him the wrong message about American justice during a time of war. He needs to understand that terrorists don't have rights. According to recent FBI documents I've read, Guantanamo Bay seems to be on the cutting edge of criminal justice in this age of international terrorism. An agent wrote this intriguing account: "On a couple of occasions, I entered interview rooms to find a detainee chained hand and foot in a fetal position to the floor, with no chair, food or water. Most times they had urinated or defecated on themselves, and had been left there for 18, 24 hours or more." If my son could see some of this up close and personal, I think he would change his ways and grow into a good Christian adult. Go easy on him, though, he is just a kid. I'm sure you will have to cut through some pesky red tape for a program like this to be implemented. My suggestion is that you don't even bring it before Congress, since bleeding heart liberals would probably try to water it down. Mr. Bush has done some wonderful things with executive orders. I would be willing to turn over my son as a prototype prisoner for the Guantanamo Bay Scared Straight program. Just make sure to keep it away from the media; they love to throw around words like "abuse" and "torture" without thinking about the bigger picture of fighting terrorism. But I don't have to tell you that. Just like the War on Drugs, the War on Terror starts at home. I want to do my part as an American Patriot and a father.
