Dear members of the list,

Assalamu Alaikum.

I believe the following book will be of interest to and inspire
both Muslim women and men.  It is also likely to help dismantle
some of the stereotypes concerning Islam and especially Muslim
women both among non-Muslims and Muslims cynical about
religious commitments. While language, in the end, is
representational and mediated, this book contains first-hand
accounts of Muslim women working in different activist capacities
on the ground in North America and Canada. This is therefore as
genuine a picture of a the activist aspect of the daily lives of some
socio-politically concious and devout Muslim women as anybody
not conducting field research themselves is likely to get.  This book
is additionally inspiring in that unlike many men and women who
live in Muslim-majority societies, these women cannot take their
Muslim identities and values for granted but must constantly strive
both to transform and sustain themselves and their communities in
a predominantly secular environment , strive against the
prejudices that many non-Muslims as well as  some ultra-orthodox
and/or cynical Muslim men and women (for instance those who
feel that hijab-clad Muslim women are self-oppressed or should
not have public lives but only family lives, etc) harbor against them,
AND  combat Islamophobia, growing hostilities, and proliferating
stereotypes concerning Islam and themselves in their home
societies in the USA and Canada.

{Invite (mankind, O Muhammad ) to the Way of your Lord (i.e. Islam) with wisdom (i.e. with the Divine Inspiration and the Qur'an) and fair preaching, and argue with them in a way that is better. Truly, your Lord knows best who has gone astray from His Path, and He is the Best Aware of those who are guided.}
(Holy Quran-16:125)

{And who is better in speech than he who [says: "My Lord is Allah (believes in His Oneness)," and then stands straight (acts upon His Order), and] invites (men) to Allah's (Islamic Monotheism), and does righteous deeds, and says: "I am one of the Muslims."} (Holy Quran-41:33)

The prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "By Allah, if Allah guides one person by you, it is better for you than the best types of camels." [al-Bukhaaree, Muslim]

The prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)  also said, "Whoever calls to guidance will have a reward similar to the reward of the one who follows him, without the reward of either of them being lessened at all."
[Muslim, Ahmad, Aboo Daawood, an-Nasaa'ee, at-Tirmidhee, Ibn Maajah]
