Islam has a lunar based calendar with 354.367 days {354 days plus eight
hours plus 48.5 minutes}. The New Year date also changes every year as
the Islamic Calendar is 11 days shorter than the solar calendar. During
the second caliphate of 'Hadrat Umar ul-Faaruuq {raziallaahu ta'aalaa anhu},
the first day of the month of Muharram of that year, which was sixty-six
days before the Hijrat, became the beginning of the Muslims' HIJRII KAMARII
CALENDAR. Islamic New Year is celebrated on the first day of Muharram
{first Islamic month}. The word Muharram also means respect. It is more
of a cultural event than a New Year celebration.
It is Sunna to fast on Ninth {9th} and Tenth {10th} days of Muharram and
It's Makruuh to fast only on Tenth {10th} day of Muharram.
All Muslims welcome the New Year with peace and prayers.
May Allaahu ta'aalaa have us all keep to the right path shown by the
scholars of Ahl as-Sunna!
May he protect us from believing in the false, deceitful, insidious lies of
the enemies of Islam and of the non-madhhabii people using the name `great
scholar of Islam'!
May He redeem the unlucky people who have slipped into these paths from
this perdition!
May All types of benedictions be pronounced over Hadrat Muhammad Mustafa
{sallallaahu ta'aalaa alaihi wa'sallam}, who is His Prophet and the most
beloved, the most virtuous, the most valuable of the entire creation and
over all of his Aal {household} and As-haab {companions}, who were his
helpers and beloved ones {alaihimus-salawaatu wa-t-tasliimaat}!
Aameen summa Aameen bijaahi Saiyyidil Mursaleen {sallallaahu ta'aalaa
alaihi wa'sallam}!
