 ZKUtil deleteRecurisively should be a recoverable operation

 Key: HBASE-5790

 Project: HBase
  Issue Type: Improvement
Reporter: Jesse Yates
Assignee: Jesse Yates

 Fix For: 0.96.0, 0.94.1

 Attachments: java_HBASE-5790-v1.patch, java_HBASE-5790.patch

 As of 3.4.3 Zookeeper now has full, multi-operation transaction. This means
 we can wholesale delete chunks of the zk tree and ensure that we don't have
 any pesky recursive delete issues where we delete the children of a node, but
 then a child joins before deletion of the parent. Even without transactions,
 this should be the behavior, but it is possible to make it much cleaner now
 that we have this new feature in zk.

[jira] [Updated] (HBASE-2214) Do HBASE-1996 -- setting size to return in scan rather than count of rows -- properly

Fix Version/s: (was: 0.96.0)
   0.94.0
   Labels:   (was: noob)
   Status: Patch Available (was: In Progress)

This is my first attempt. It is not finished, I was just curious if this is the
right way to go. Note that it has no tests, because I was not sure where to
include those. This patch piggybacks on the existing functionality introduced
in HBASE-1996. (It seems that this also has no tests.)

I tried to add a test to TestHRegion and TestScanner, but it seems the existing
tests bypass the HRegionServer Result[] next(final long scannerId, int
nbRows) method.

 Attachments: HBASE-2214-0.94.txt, HBASE-2214_with_broken_TestShell.txt

 The notion that you set size rather than row count specifying how many rows a
 scanner should return in each cycle was raised over in hbase-1966. Its a
 good one making hbase regular though the data under it may vary.
 HBase-1966 was committed but the patch was constrained by the fact that it
 needed to not change RPC interface. This issue is about doing hbase-1966 for
 0.21 in a clean, unconstrained way.

 I ran some tests to verify if WAL compression should be turned on by default.
 For a use case where it's not very useful (values two order of magnitude
 bigger than the keys), the insert time wasn't different and the CPU usage 15%
 higher (150% CPU usage VS 130% when not compressing the WAL).
 When values are smaller than the keys, I saw a 38% improvement for the insert
 run time and CPU usage was 33% higher (600% CPU usage VS 450%). I'm not sure
 WAL compression accounts for all the additional CPU usage, it might just be
 that we're able to insert faster and we spend more time in the MemStore per
 second (because our MemStores are bad when they contain tens of thousands of
 values).
 Those are two extremes, but it shows that for the price of some CPU we can
 save a lot. My machines have 2 quads with HT, so I still had a lot of idle
 CPUs.

 Related to HDFS-3280 and the HBase WAL slowdown on 0.23+
 It would be nice to have a simple tool like HFilePerformanceEvaluation, ...
 to be able to check easily the HLog performance.

[jira] [Commented] (HBASE-5781) Zookeeper session got closed while trying to assign the region to RS using hbck -fix

In HBaseFsckRepair.waitUntilAssigned
{code}
finally {
  try {
connection.close();
  } catch (IOException ioe) {
throw ioe;
  }
}
{code}

This close caused the exception as per my observation. This method is being
called in assignmentRepair, regionConsistencyRepair and metaRepair...

Now if the HBCK fix needs to fix all these kind of issues or atleast 2 of these
issues, the close would happen before the other fix.. I have not done detailed
check.. Just observation as per the logs..

Mean while tested the current RC for 0.94 version

 found a few bugs.

I looked into this briefly. The version I've used on production systems
doesn't have this finally/close portion in it. HBASE-3777 (on
trunk/0.92/0.94) and HBASE-4508 (backport of HBASE-3777) on 0.90 added this.

I think if you remove the extra try-finally-close the -fix will work again,
(but may leak resources). Can you give the modification a try?

@Jon
Yes removing this finally close makes the test run and fix the issues that HBCK
finds..  :)

I will take a detailed look at the code on Monday so that we can close the
issue... Or if u are giving a patch it is fine ;)

@Anoop.

If you want to supply a patch that would be great. We would definitely want to
get this into 0.94! Currently, there is a hanging test in trunk's
TestHBaseFsck (HBASE-5973) that I'm hunting down, so if you can give me the a
output of a run on 0.94 I'd be happy.

If it ends up being having a resource leak, I'd say that since hbck isn't long
running, it would probably be ok to later as long as we noted it with a follow
on jira.

I've verified that the failure is due to hbase-site.xml's change. The test
expects a scan timeout (previously 10 retries) but likely fails out due to mvn
timeout with 100 retries.

Is this really necessary?

Regardless of the outcome here, I'm going to modify the test in HBASE-5793 so
that it checks the same thing but doesn't rely on retries.

 After the HBASE-5747 modification, this one particular case hangs.
 {code}
 mvn test -PlocalTests -Dtest=TestHBaseFsck
 {code}
 It was hanging on a scan of a table that the test deleted. It expected a call
 to thrown an exception after a timeout. HBASE-5747 changed the timeout to a
 larger number of retries which caused mvn to fail the test.

[jira] [Commented] (HBASE-5778) Turn on WAL compression by default

Lars Hofhansl commented on HBASE-5778:

@Ted: Unfortunately it is not as simple as that. As I tried to explain above,
the ReplicationSource reads from the WAL files at offsets that are stored in
ZK. This does not work any longer, as you can no longer start reading the WAL
at an offset. The files need to be read from the beginning to build up the
dictionary.

 Turn on WAL compression by default

 CPUs.

@Jon I can put it back. I pulled in that from original patch. Let me try
setting it back. See if that helps w/ test hangs.

I ran TestSchemaMetrics locally and it runs fine. It also does not seem to be
responsible for the test 'timeouts' that are subsequent to 2757.

 Forward port as much as we can of Mikhail's hard-won test cleanups over on
 0.89 branch Will improve our being able to run unit tests in //. He also
 found a few bugs.

Hmm... Its not hbase-3927 that broke compatibility, it seems rather to be this
one that changes the RegionLoad VERSION:

Looking at the patch, it breaks compatibility in a pretty radical way changing
ints to vints on all RegionLoad members.

I'd suggest backing out HBASE-5256. Its a little weird in that it ups the
VERSION on the inner class but not on the outer class. Its not a critical fix
either so we could probably do w/o it in 0.94. Let me try removing it.

Unit test that demonstrates the problem. It brings HSL from 0.92 into
src/test/java/o.a.h.h and then tries to have a 0.94/trunk HSL deserialize the
0.92 HSL.  Currently it fails.

I'm thinking that we make this work by pressing on.. by including in HSL a
HSL092 to use deserializing 092 versions... or rather 092 versions of
HSL#RegionLoad. I think we need to press on because the second patch is a
legit fix -- converting requests from int to long to avoid our ever going
negative on read/write counts... I don't think we should revert this in 0.94.

Implemented fix suggested in conversation. Applied to 0.92.x based hbase, and
confirmed that hbck's assignment operations worked.

* Fixed a borked test cluster
* On ok cluster, use hbase shell to closed a region, ran updated hbck to verify
 detected, ran 'hbck -fix' to fix assignment and problem was repaired.

Note for this to pass on trunk, HBASE-5993 is needed as well.

 After the HBASE-5747 modification, this one particular case hangs.
 {code}
 mvn test -PlocalTests -Dtest=TestHBaseFsck
 {code}
 It was hanging on a scan of a table that the test deleted. It expected a call
 to thrown an exception after a timeout. HBASE-5747 changed the timeout to a
 larger number of retries which caused mvn to fail the test.

Note for this to pass on trunk, HBASE-5793 is needed as well.

@Anoop -- I checked the HConnection code and it seems like there should be no
connection leaks -- the suggested patch seems clean, and doesn't need follow up
work.

This something I missed when I ported HBASE-5128 to trunk branches.

I'll commit this if an reviews +1 this, or if first thing Monday unless there
are any concerns.

 TestHBaseFsck#TestNoHdfsTable test hangs after HBASE-5747
 -

 Key: HBASE-5793
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HBASE-5793
 Project: HBase
  Issue Type: Sub-task
Affects Versions: 0.96.0
Reporter: Jonathan Hsieh
Assignee: Jonathan Hsieh
 Attachments: hbase-5793.patch

 After the HBASE-5747 modification, this one particular case hangs.
 {code}
 mvn test -PlocalTests -Dtest=TestHBaseFsck
 {code}
 It was hanging on a scan of a table that the test deleted. It expected a call
 to thrown an exception after a timeout. HBASE-5747 changed the timeout to a
 larger number of retries which caused mvn to fail the test.

 After the HBASE-5747 modification, this one particular case hangs.
 {code}
 mvn test -PlocalTests -Dtest=TestHBaseFsck
 {code}
 It was hanging on a scan of a table that the test deleted. It expected a call
 to thrown an exception after a timeout. HBASE-5747 changed the timeout to a
 larger number of retries which caused mvn to fail the test.

Priority: Critical
 Fix For: 0.94.0

 Create a table with 1000 splits, after the region assignemnt, kill the
 regionserver wich contains META table.
 Here few regions are missing after the log splitting and region assigment.
 HBCK report shows multiple region holes are got created.
 Same scenario was verified mulitple times in 0.92.1, no issues.

 Currently in.readInt() is used in RegionLoad.readFields()
 More metrics would be added to RegionLoad in the future, we should utilize
 WritableUtils.readVInt() to reduce the amount of data exchanged between
 Master and region servers.

I will upload the patch to review board after more tests.
Based on stack's original design, ClassPathLocalizer is a configurable class,
that's why we use the refrection to call the method. I think I can change this.
@stack, what do you think?
I'm also thinking about how to add test case. Thank you, Ted.

@Andrew, thank you. I will try to reuse the code. I agree with we should use
one classloader. The classloader in CP is not a general one.
