   @Reidd - look for -Dtest.exclude.pattern in
https://ci-hadoop.apache.org/job/HBase/job/HBase-PreCommit-GitHub-PR/job/PR-3120/1/artifact/out/patch-unit-hbase-server.txt
to see TestConnectionImplementation is on the excluded list

Also the import order seems to be inconsistent (e.g HTablePool has the
Google protobuf imports at the end, while HTable and many other classes have
them alphabetized).

Checked other classes, I think `com.google.` should be at the bottom of the
import orders

Could you please update it and trigger QA again.

> HBASE-15560 introduces the TinyLFU cache policy for the blockcache.
> W-TinyLFU ([research paper|http://arxiv.org/pdf/1512.00727.pdf]) records the
> frequency in a counting sketch, ages periodically by halving the counters,
> and orders entries by SLRU. An entry is discarded by comparing the frequency
> of the new arrival (candidate) to the SLRU's victim, and keeping the one with
> the highest frequency. This allows the operations to be performed in O(1)
> time and, though the use of a compact sketch, a much larger history is
> retained beyond the current working set. In a variety of real world traces
> the policy had [near optimal hit
> rates|https://github.com/ben-manes/caffeine/wiki/Efficiency].
> The implementation of HBASE-15560 uses several Java 8 idioms, depends on JRE
> 8+ type Optional, and has dependencies on libraries compiled with Java 8+
> bytecode. It could be backported to branch-1 but must be made optional both
> at compile time and runtime, enabled by the 'build-with-jdk8' build profile.
> The TinyLFU policy must go into its own build module.
> The blockcache must be modified to load L1 implementation/policy dynamically
> at startup by reflection if the policy is "TinyLFU"

> Even though RegionStates is a highly accessed data structure in HMaster. Most
> of it's methods are synchronized. Which limits concurrency. Even simply
> making some of the getters non-synchronized by using concurrent data
> structures has helped with region assignments. We can go as simple as this
> approach or create locks per region or a bucket lock per region bucket.

> The default value of config: sun.net.inetaddr.ttl is -1 and the java
> processes will cache the mapping of hostname to ip address forever, See:
> But things go wrong when a regionserver with same hostname and different ip
> address rejoins the hbase cluster. The HMaster will get wrong ip address of
> the regionserver from this cache and every region assignment to this
> regionserver will be blocked for a time because the HMaster can't communicate
> with the regionserver.
> A tradeoff is to set the sun.net.inetaddr.ttl to 10m or 1h and make the wrong
> cache expired.
> Suggestions are welcomed. Thanks~

> Region locality information is needed by the balancer to generate region
> plans. Computing HDFSBlockDistribution is expensive on larger clusters and
> adds load to the NameNode. This also needs to be recomputed on a master
> restart. The proposal is to get the HDFSBlockDistribution from the
> RegionServers instead of computing it in Master. RS already has this
> information and we could just reuse it by querying it. RS already passes
> dataLocality info via RegionLoad today.
> Proposed Implementation: This is a high-level overview.
> # A RegionServer API has to be added which will return HDFSBlockDistribution
> for all the regions it hosts. RS already has this info. Since ClusterStatus
> has already become bulky and we don’t need updated locality so fast, it’s
> better to have another API rather than add this to RegionLoad and pass it
> along with RSReport.
> # Master will have a Chore to query all RegionServers and will cache the
> HDFSBlockDistribution for those regions. This is easy and quick. Admins can
> tune the frequency based on size of the cluster. On a ~90 nodes cluster with
> 500k regions and a prototype implementation and no load, it took about 5
> seconds to get all HDFSBlockDistribution from RS.
> # The cache will be an extension of RegionLocationFinder (subclass), if
> needed to keep the implementation simple. Probably will get clear with
> implementation.
> # Balancer will use the new cache to get all HDFSBlockDistribution. If there
> is a new region and Chore didn’t get the block distribution from RS during
> its previous run, then it will be computed by RegionLocationFinder the same
> way it has been done now. If the Chore runs more frequently like every hour,
> then this recomputation will be drastically reduced.

> A RegionServer API has to be added which will return HDFSBlockDistribution
> for all the regions it hosts. RS already has this info cached and updated
> when flush/compaction happens. Master can query and get instead of hitting
> the namenode and caching. The larger the cluster becomes, the more costly it
> becomes to get this information and more stale the cached information becomes.
> This jira is only to add the API to regionserver.

> Problem Statement:
> In the cross-cluster replication validation, we found some cells in source
> and sink cluster can have the same row key, the same timestamp but different
> values. The happens when mutations with the same row key are submitted in
> batch without specifying the timestamp, and the same timestamp in the unit of
> millisecond is assigned at the time when they are committed to the WAL.
> When this happens, if the major compaction hasn’t happened yet and you scan
> the table, you can find some cells have the same row key, the same timestamps
> but different values, like the first three rows in the following table.
> |Row Key 1|CF0::Column 1|Timestatmp 1|Value 1|
> |Row Key 1|CF0::Column 1|Timestatmp 1|Value 2|
> |Row Key 1|CF0::Column 1|Timestatmp 1|Value 3|
> |Row Key 2|CF0::Column 1|Timestatmp 2|Value 4|
> |Row Key 3|CF0::Column 1|Timestatmp 4|Value 5|
> The ordering of the first three rows is indeterminate in the presence of the
> cross-replication, so after compaction, in the master cluster you will see
> “Row Key 1, CF0::Column1, Timestamp1” having the value 3, but in the slave
> cluster, you might see the cell having one of the three possible values 1, 2,
> 3, which results in data inconsistency issue between the master and slave
> clusters.
> Root Cause Analysis:
> In HBaseInterClusterReplicationEndpoint.createBatches() of branch-1.3, the
> WAL entries from the same region could be split into different batches
> according to replication RPC limit and these batches are shipped by
> ReplicationSource concurrently, so the batches for the same region could
> arrive at the sink in the slave clusters then apply to the region
> synchronously in indeterminate order.
> Solution:
> In HBase 3.0.0 and 2.1.0, [~Apache9]&[~openinx]&[~fenghh] provided Serial
> Replication HBASE-20046 which guarantees the order of pushing logs to slave
> clusters is same as the order of requests from client in the master cluster.
> It contains mainly two changes:
> # Recording the replication "barriers" in ZooKeeper to synchronize the
> replication across old/failed RS and new RS to provide strict ordering
> semantics even in the presence of region-move or RS failure.
> # Make sure the batches within one region are shipped to the slave clusters
> in order.
> The second part of change is exactly what we need and the minimal change to
> fix the issue in this JIRA.
> To fix the issue in this JIRA, we have two options:
> # Cherry-Pick HBASE-20046 to branch 1.3. Pros: It also fixes the data
> inconsistency issue when there is region-move or RS failure and help to
> reduce the noises in our cross-cluster replication/backup validation which is
> our ultimate goal. Cons: the change is big and I'm not sure for now whether
> the change is self-contained or it has other dependencies which need to port
> to branch 1.3 too; and we need longer time to validate and stabilize.
> # Port the minimal change or make the equivalent change as the second part
> of HBASE-20046 to make sure the batches within one region are shipped to the
> slave clusters in order."
> With limited knowledge about HBase Release Schedule and Process, I prefer
> option 2 because of cons of option 1, but I'm open to option 1 and other
> options. Thoughts?

@Reidd - I fixed the checkstyle issue. I'm having trouble seeing which
tests failed (only that some forks crashed), but since the change is only to a
single test file, I don't see how this patch could be breaking anything else.

Unfortunately the test run did not exercise this test because it's in the
exclusion list (I assume because it's been broken a long time.) Will that be
removed from the exclusion list automatically if it starts passing or is that
an extra step I need to take as part of this patch?

   Thanks!

> HBase currently offers operators a choice. They can set
> KEEP_DELETED_CELLS=true and VERSIONS to max value, plus no TTL, and they will
> always have a complete history of all changes (but high storage costs and
> penalties to read performance). Or they can have KEEP_DELETED_CELLS=false and
> VERSIONS/TTL set to some reasonable values, but that means that major
> compactions can destroy the ability to do a consistent snapshot read of any
> prior time. (This limits the usefulness and correctness of, for example,
> Phoenix's SCN lookback feature.)
> I propose having a new TTL property to give a minimum age that an expired or
> deleted Cell would have to achieve before it could be purged. (I see that
> HBASE-10118 already does something similar for the delete markers
> themselves.)
> This would allow operators to have a consistent history for some finite
> amount of recent time while still purging out the "long tail" of obsolete /
> deleted versions.

> In hbase-it package, Class like RESTApiClusterManager and HBaseClusterManager
> which has some part of implementation code for Chaos Action.
>
> If any user wants to create private implementation which resembles

> ClusterManager Interface and it's extended implementations are private.

> We should make them public so anyone can have their own implementation and

> We have a large table in production that causes the balancer's
> RegionLocationFinder cache to consume 4 GB of heap, which, among other
> factors, triggered OOMEs, and made us aware of this problem.
> RegionLocationFinder embeds a cache backed by Guava's CacheLoader. The
> RegionLocationFinder cache comes to consume heap for RegionInfos for all
> table regions and all HDFS block locations of all store files for all regions
> of all tables.
> The only limit we pass to the CacheBuilder is an expiration time of 1440
> milliseconds for individual cache entries. That's 4 hours. That's much too
> long; however, the cache also periodically refreshes itself, where the need
> for a refresh is checked whenever BaseLoadBalancer calls
> RegionLocationFinder's setClusterMetrics() method, which defeats the
> expiration based limit anyway.
> We should be bounding this cache with effective resource controls. Time based
> expiry is fine but the periodic refresh logic must be removed to make it
> effective. Implement size based limits too. CacheBuilder#maximumSize will
> limit by number cache entries. This might be fine but
> CacheBuilder#maximumWeight would be better, where weight is something
> determined by the API user. In this case it can be an estimate of the heap
> size of the hash map entries kept in the cache.
> Default should remain unbounded. Specific bounds should be supported by new
> site configuration options.

Nice find [~caroliney14]. This might be applicable to 2.x+ releases as well?

> HBase RegionServer Canary reports failure if an online regionserver is
> hosting 0 regions
>
>
> Key: HBASE-25730
> URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HBASE-25730
> Project: HBase
> Issue Type: Bug
> Components: canary
>Reporter: Caroline
>Assignee: Caroline
>Priority: Minor
>
> The probability of this happening increases with system rsgroup enabled (i.e.
> an rsgroup dedicated to system tables, which have few regions) and paired
> with table-level load balancing. As long as the server is alive and able to
> accept/serve regions, we should not consider it an error case if it is
> currently serving no regions.

> They use jul to log the spans and we have jul-to-slf4j on classpath.
