We just tried to export some (small amount of) data out of an 0.94 cluster to
0.98 cluster. We used Export/Import for that.
By default we found that the import M/R job correctly reports the number of
records seen, but _silently_ does not import anything. After looking at the
 0.98 it's obvious there's an hbase.import.version
 (-Dhbase.import.version=0.94) to make this work.
 Two issues:
 # -Dhbase.import.version=0.94 should be show with the the Import.usage
 # If not given it should not just silently not import anything
In this issue I'll just a trivially add this option to the Import tool's
 usage.

Import can also filter records, in which case input records will not be equal
to output records. So input != output is not necessarily a problem. We can
expand on the warning, saying maybe some have been filtered out if configured.
Alternatively, we can also add a counter for filtered out records, and do the
math. Other than that +1.

 Add hbase.import.version to Import usage.

 Key: HBASE-13352
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HBASE-13352
 Project: HBase
  Issue Type: Bug
Reporter: Lars Hofhansl
Priority: Trivial
 Fix For: 2.0.0, 1.0.1, 1.1.0, 0.98.13

 Attachments: 13352-v2.txt, 13352.txt

We just tried to export some (small amount of) data out of an 0.94 cluster to
0.98 cluster. We used Export/Import for that.
By default we found that the import M/R job correctly reports the number of
records seen, but _silently_ does not import anything. After looking at the
 0.98 it's obvious there's an hbase.import.version
 (-Dhbase.import.version=0.94) to make this work.
 Two issues:
 # -Dhbase.import.version=0.94 should be show with the the Import.usage
 # If not given it should not just silently not import anything
In this issue I'll just a trivially add this option to the Import tool's
 usage.

Was thinking about that. To know whether something was inserted we'd have to
scan data back, but the table in question might not have been empty.
Maybe an avenue is to throw when we cannot read the data. From the code it's
not immediately obvious _why_ it silently ignores data. It's somewhere in the
bowls of the generated protobuf code...

In short: That would be tricky, I think.

We can look at the map output records count and report on that, no?

Yes, we can do that. In fact looking at my logs, I can see that the Map output
records is 0, while Map input records has the proper value. In the
successful run both a the same.

Tested above patch with 0.98. Correctly reports the warning, when nothing was
important. Let me know what you think.
