Patch looks great. +1

Would it be good to add this to release note [~yangzhe1991]?

   * If user setBatch(5) and rpc returns 3+5+5+5+3 cells, we should return
5+5+5+5+1 to user.
   * setBatch doesn't mean setAllowPartialResult(true)

hasMoreCellsInRow was never in a release? Thats why it ok to change the method
name?

Want to amend the javadoc on mayHaveMoreCellsInRow method w/ a quick amendment
so say you can't be always sure you are at the end of a row (add in 'may' to
fix this bit in javadoc on the new method... "...True means there are be more
cells for the current row")

Good stuff.

Patch v5 isn't on review board. Can you upload to review board ?
{code}
+// return here if allow partials and we will handle batching later.
+if (scan.getAllowPartialResults()) {

Previously there was a null check on scan. That is not needed ?
{code}
+partialResultsRow = result.getRow();

Typo in variable name.

I find that KeyValueHeap.peak() just returns next Cell in current scanner,
doesn't pass to QueryMatcher or filters. So moreCellsInRow logic in HRegion can
not make sure we must have more. So parital(hasMoreCellsInRow) flag in Result
is actually "mayHasMoreCellsInRow". If it is true, the result may still be the
last Result for a row, and if it is false the result must be the last.

Thanks [~yangzhe1991] for the ping.

bq. The scan API is too confusing now with caching, batching,
allowPartialResults, setMaxResultsPerColumnFamily, and maxResultSize. We are
not making the life of the user easy
Cannot agree more, it's really complicated and confusing, even for developers
I'd say...

bq. I think only allowPartial and maxResultSize are needed... setBatch might be
still useful for a paging kind of results presentation way?
Agree we only maintain these two semantics. For the paging case, could we use
{{setCaching}} to achieve the goal? Like if we want to display 20 rows per
page, just set caching to 20, call scan.next and display each time? Or please
correct me if I misunderstood the meaning of "Paging" here (Smile)
[~anoop.hbase]

bq. Should we get rid of batching and caching, setMaxResultsPerColumnFamily
(turn them into no-ops) and only do allowPartialResults and maxResultSize? How
radical it will be for 2.0?
This is some interface change (incompatibility) and would cause additional
efforts for migration from 1.x to 2.0. I'm not that familiar with our strategy
here but maybe slowing down a little bit is better? Like marking the interface
deprecated and invokes the unified logic internal in 2.0, then remove them in
some later releases? I'm not that confident about educating customers, maybe my
limited personal experience though :-)

And I am not sure if the "paging" works if users don't want to limit the
time/size but want to display a limited number of cells to a upper level,
because the scanner is stateful and we must handle all results before the
scanner closed. It is a continuous flow for the whole Scan, we may have to deal
with all Cells in fact? I filed a issue, HBASE-15576 (sorry I have some higher
priority work so this issue has not any progress..), we can pass a Cell with
cf/cq/mvcc to server so we can "page" more powerfully.

Phil Yang commented on HBASE-15484:

For caching we had some discussion in HBASE-16987 and HBASE-16973. Using
size/time limit is more direct than setCache for users because usually they
setLimit because they want to limit size/time, and now by default we set cache
to max_value.

Paging in cell level is a possible scene. It is different from "limit" which
Duo mentions because limit means we can stop and close the scanner, but batch
means we should pause and wait next call. Since we have size/time limit at
server side, a large row will not result in OOM at server even users don't
setBatch. I think we can keep setBatch interface but change it to a client-only
logic. In server we only consider size/time limit, and if we return more than
batch cells, we can cache them in client? By this changing, we can decrease the
number of RPC requests without OOM/Timeout risk.

[~stack] [~carp84] [~mantonov] FYI, you also had some ideas about scanning in
HBASE-16973 :) Thanks.

setBatch is almost the same with allowPartial as we do not guarantee that we
will always give you the cells which count is exactly the batch you set. You
can use setMaxResultSize and allowPartial I think.

And for caching, it is the same reason that you can just use setMaxResultSize
to limit the size of cells returned. And I think the 'limit' option is more
useful because RS could close the scanner when the returned results reached the
limit.

Sorry missed this one from a long time. Thanks for reviving the discussion.
setBatch might be still useful for a paging kind of results presentation way?
May be then also let users fetch data based on the max result size and any way
that will come to client result cache and let only needed data be displayed.
Ya now we have caching, batch, set max result size... Too much complicated.
But caching is still useful?

These days [~Apache9] is doing some work on async scan. It may be the time to
reconsider this issue? In current implementation, we consider setBatch and
setAllowPartialResults(true) as same meaning. Like caching, batching may be
also an old-style feature? We have allowPartialResults so we can use this to
limit size/time for a large row. We should distinguish two methods or remove
setBatch in 2.0?

What do you think? Thanks.

Let's do this for 2.0. The scan API is too confusing now with caching,
batching, allowPartialResults, setMaxResultsPerColumnFamily, and maxResultSize.
We are not making the life of the user easy.

Should we get rid of batching and caching, setMaxResultsPerColumnFamily (turn
them into no-ops) and only do allowPartialResults and maxResultSize? How
radical it will be for 2.0?

Phil Yang commented on HBASE-15484:
---

I find a corner case that if we setAllowPartialResults(true) and use a sparse
filter. We may receive a heartbeat with some cells, and we will load them to
cache and the Result.isPartial() return true. But next rpc may return cells in
next row because the rest cells of previous row are all skipped. So the last
Result of a row may still be partial. I think it is acceptable but we need
change the definition of isPartial().

New definition may be:
Whether or not this result from scanner is a partial result.
The result will never be partial unless use Scan#setAllowPartialResults(true)
while scanning. If allowing partial results, the result will still not be
partial if ClientScanner is sure that the Result is the last one of this row.
Otherwise the result will be partial if the number of cells in this result is
less than expected, which means less than batch size (if setBatch) or not a
complete row (if not setBatch).
