Hervé Boutemy commented on MPOM-158:

default excludes are on by default with rat 0.12
http://creadur.apache.org/rat/apache-rat-plugin/check-mojo.html#useDefaultExcludes

do we really need to configure anything in Apache parent pom?

> good to use some sensible defaults.

John D. Ament commented on MPOM-158:

Its primarily based on podling input - simplifying the default setup. I agree,
and using a flag like {{useDefaultExcludes}} may make more sense in the scheme
of what every ASF project could use. Looking at my own local, *.log is only in
one project so I suspect its a local project issue there.

So, agree to add {{useDefaultExcludes}}?

First thanks for offering a patch, but there are already a number of default
excludes via the the configuration of the
[apache-rat-plugin|https://creadur.apache.org/rat/apache-rat-plugin/check-mojo.html]
 like
[useEclipseDefaultExcludea|https://creadur.apache.org/rat/apache-rat-plugin/check-mojo.html#useEclipseDefaultExcludes],

[useMavenDefaultExcludes|http://creadur.apache.org/rat/apache-rat-plugin/check-mojo.html#useMavenDefaultExcludes]
 and
[useIdeaDefaultExcludes|http://creadur.apache.org/rat/apache-rat-plugin/check-mojo.html#useIdeaDefaultExcludes].
Apart from that the {{*.log}} is not currently part of any default exclusion
cause usually a log files does not belong to the project root folder which is
unique for each project which means the project has to decide to add this
explicit.
There is one question coming to my mind: Is there a problem arising which you
like to solve or something which does not work as expected?
