Hi @markap14 , thanks for submitting this patch. I tested it out on my
cluster and it does not appear to resolve the MergeContent problem in my case.

This PR contains two commits. The first just consists of a unit test
reproducing the issue. The second commit addresses the issue, so that the first
commit will now pass all unit tests.
