On my Mac, LibreOffice 5.1 has same behavior as OpenOffice 4.0.1 and 4.1.1.
Only OpenOffice 4.1.2 on Mac differs from what we obtain on other versions on
Mac and Windows (even 4.1.2 on my test machine).

Document attached from comment #7 use Times new roman font.
Are you sure to have this font on your Mac?

Yes of course, Times New Roman is installed.

I have noticed difference on the computer that I use on a daily basis.
I have then tested different versions of OOo and today LibreOffice 5.1 on this
computer without any other changes (OS, fonts or so...).
I have also tested another Mac and a Windows7 machine to check what happens.

I think it is a real problem if layout differs if you use another OOo or OS
version...

Of course, screeen capture are here only for a visual view of this trouble.

I have juste tested AOO 4.1.2 rc3 on my Mac runnning 10.9.5 : same problem as
indicated.
I have also tested on a Windows 7 computer with AOO 4.1.1 and AOO 4.1.2 rc3 :
everything is correct.

I suppose this probelm is specific to the Mac version.
Is it due to a calculation of leading metrics, similar to issue 124823 :
https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=124823 ?

Here is same document modified withg column breaks.
No settings are changed : same computer, same OS version, same printer, same
preferences as both AOO versions are installed and use same profile.
I am surprised that layout differs in AOO 4.0.1 vs 4.1.2

I cannot confirm this. For me the layout is with four identical columns as it
should be.

There exists the option "Use printer metrics for document formatting". Perhaps
you have checked it in one version and not in the other or have changed the
printer?

For to force a column break you should never manually adjust the font size or
the line spacing or margins or such, but insert a manual column break with menu
Insert > Manual Breaks > check column break.
