I tried to trace this down, looking at the 3.2 and 4.2 code base and as far as
I can tell, it's always been broken in this way. Even back to 3.2 {{hostname}}
is passed as {{NULL}} for a get by address and is then passed to
{{is_dotted_form_hostname}} which passes it to {{ink_inet_addr}}. The only
thing I can see is that perhaps previously reverse DNS entries never went
stale, but that doesn't seem very plausible.
The change I would make to the fix is to do that check {{probe}} in
{{HostDB.cc}} or better in {{is_dotted_form_hostname}} so the check is

Thanks alan. Whatever fixed we make for this, going forward, should be
committed against TS-3311. Reopening this one would cause all sorts of

I've looked at this some more and I think I messed up something in the
{{probe()}} logic. It should be able to handle a {{NULL}} {{hostname}} (you can
see other checks for this there). In this particular case it's doing a lookup
by address so the {{hostname}} shouldn't be needed, only the {{ip}} field. I'll
do some more investigation. Phil Sorber's patch is fine for now but I need to
dig down to find the real problem.

The only origin server configured in pre-production (remap rule) has a TTL of 86400. The problem seems to occur daily where the time is about 2-4 minutes less everyday.
