bq. Any checking done to ensure we still doing checksumming properly?
The logs from TestChecksumWithHdfs.java do show this but I couldn't figure out
how to drive the plumbing deep enough to make assertions against DFS Client's
behavior.

bq. For SCR 'dfs.client.read.shortcircuit.skip.checksum' should this property
be set to 'true' for hbase case because hbase does checksumming internally?
Yea, we automatically set it on the conf in HFileSystem. Are you asking if we
should document that we recommend setting it? I don't think that is necessary
because we can handle it internally instead of placing more burden on the
operator. Or did I misinterpret?

looks like Surefire recognized that it failed ([log from running unit
tests|https://builds.apache.org/job/PreCommit-HBASE-Build/13195/artifact/patchprocess/patch-unit-root.txt]):

{code}

{code}

But as you mentioned [Jenkins JUnit reporter couldn't parse the
results|https://builds.apache.org/job/PreCommit-HBASE-Build/13195/testReport/TEST-org.apache.hadoop.hbase.replication.multiwal.TestReplicationKillMasterRSCompressedWithMultipleAsyncWAL/xml/_failed_to_read_/]:

org.dom4j.DocumentException: Error on line 80 of document : XML document

{code}

If you browse to [the {{artifact/patchprocess}} directory for the
build|https://builds.apache.org/job/PreCommit-HBASE-Build/13195/artifact/patchprocess/]
 there'll be a [file with all the surefire results zipped up named
'test_logs.zip'|https://builds.apache.org/job/PreCommit-HBASE-Build/13195/artifact/patchprocess/test_logs.zip].

{code}
$ find . -name *TestReplicationKillMasterRSCompressedWithMultipleAsyncWAL*
./component/hbase-server/target/surefire-reports/org.apache.hadoop.hbase.replication.multiwal.TestReplicationKillMasterRSCompressedWithMultipleAsyncWAL-output.txt
./component/hbase-server/target/surefire-reports/TEST-org.apache.hadoop.hbase.replication.multiwal.TestReplicationKillMasterRSCompressedWithMultipleAsyncWAL.xml
./component/hbase-server/target/surefire-reports/org.apache.hadoop.hbase.replication.multiwal.TestReplicationKillMasterRSCompressedWithMultipleAsyncWAL.txt
{code}

The xml file in question appears truncated. It just ends after opening the
CDATA block for stderr of the test.

The other files contain stuff, but glancing at them didn't reveal anything
obvious.

Hopefully that helps for pointers? It doesn't look like a bug in precommit,
FWIW. maybe surefire.

I'm not sure what's going on with the precommit results, I click through to
testReports, but then can't get info on the failure. Not sure if it's related
to my changes or not. [~busbey] is this a precommit bug?

> There are several inconsistencies between how our docs claim we do things and
> how we actually do things.
> There are two docs sections that attempt to address how SCR should work.
> dfs.client.read.shortcircuit.skip.checksum is advised to set to true, but our
> code in separate places ignores it and then later sets it to true anyway.
> CommonFSUtils and FSUtils duplicate code related to SCR setup.
> There is a workaround in HFileSystem for a bug that's been fixed in all
> versions of hadoop that we support. (HADOOP-9307)
> We suggest setting dfs.client.read.shortcircuit.buffer.size to a value that
> is very close to what we'd set it to anyway, without clearly explaining why
> this is important.
> There are other properties that we claim are important, but we don't offer
> any suggestions or explanations.

Thanks [~mdrob] for the ping.

The hadoop implementation of
[ChecksumFileSystem|https://github.com/apache/hadoop/blob/trunk/hadoop-common-project/hadoop-common/src/main/java/org/apache/hadoop/fs/ChecksumFileSystem.java#L50-L51]
 does not require parity of these 2 options, so one can choose to only enable
it on write and disable it on read. (Actually, the {{writeChecksum}} option was
added later by HADOOP-8042)

Will rename to localFS, is fine. Everything should be this.fs in HFileSystem,
will clean that too.

One thing I noticed now was the check in
https://github.com/apache/hbase/blob/master/hbase-server/src/main/java/org/apache/hadoop/hbase/io/FSDataInputStreamWrapper.java#L153-L154

We do an identity comparison to check if the file system is the same as the
nochecksum file system, and if it is we don't do hbase checksumming. This check
doesn't work. FS and noSumFS are the same object previously when
{{(useHBaseChecksum is false OR fs instanceof LocalFileSystem) AND
hbase.fs.wrapper is unset}}. I think that was a bug, the last one shouldn't be
a condition for it, because both of them should have been getting wrapped in
the same manner. I imagine this was mostly used for testing and never came up
on prod systems?

I don't fully understand why we end up skipping HBase checksums on LocalFS, but
it strongly appears to have been the case of what the code actually did.

I haven't done any testing beyond unit tests, I'm not even sure that the unit
tests we are running are sufficient. I didn't add anything new to the suite.
The mechanics of check sum verification from the dfs client are very very
opaque.

isLocalFS is name of method, not of a boolean Make it localFS.

bq. If it's a local FS then we will always disable write checksums and verify
checksums, currently.

Can't hbase do its checksums even if localfs?

bq. So we are still writing the checksums but never reading them?

That is correct. If we fail the checksum that hbase wrote, we fall back to
check the hdfs one.

bq. Further tidied up the logic in v2 and added additional comments inline.

You verify your changes do as advertised -- or just unit tests? You change code
around in HFileSystem.java. There is a this.fs and and an fs. W/ your
reordering, the this.fs could be different?

Otherwise, looks great. Nice improvement. Thanks.

> We suggest setting dfs.client.read.shortcircuit.buffer.size to a value that

> There are other properties that we claim are important, but we don't offer

Mike Drob commented on HBASE-20674:

One thing that is unclear to me...

If it's a local FS then we will always disable write checksums and verify
checksums, currently. If it is not a local FS, we will only disable verify
checksums on the "nochecksum fs" that we keep around. So we are still writing
the checksums but never reading them? Is there nuance here, that we may decide
to go back and read those checksums? I thought I saw a comment somewhere that
if hbase checksums fail we'll fall back to DFS checksums but I can't locate it
anymore, maybe was my imagination.

Further tidied up the logic in v2 and added additional comments inline.

[~xiaochen] - this is the context of the checksum stuff I was asking you about
earlier. Maybe take a look and tell me if I'm way off base on anything?

> There are several inconsistencies between how our docs claim we do things and
> how we actually do things.
> There are two docs sections that attempt to address how SCR should work.
> dfs.client.read.shortcircuit.skip.checksum is advised to set to true, but our
> code in separate places ignores it and then later sets it to true anyway.
> CommonFSUtils and FSUtils duplicate code related to SCR setup.
