Josh Rosen commented on SPARK-11255:

Just to be clear, my proposal was to bump from 3.1.1 to 3.1.2. If they use
semantic versioning and haven't introduced regressions, then I'd hope that
would be okay. Also fine holding off on that until 2.0.

Yeah we could bump up the R version as a part of Spark 2.0 (we should open a
new JIRA to discuss this). R releases happen every 3 months or so (see
https://cran.r-project.org/src/base/R-3/), so 3.1.1 is around 1.5 years old now.

Hey, just curious: is 3.1.1 a hard requirement or would 3.1.2 also work? I'm
experimenting with some different build automation stuff and it would be nice
to be able to use 3.1.2, which is the earliest version that's supported by
Anaconda ({{conda install r}}).

in http://spark.apache.org/docs/latest/, it is claimed that Spark runs on Java
7+, Python 2.6+ and R 3.1+. So to keep consistent with the documentation, we
need to guarrantee that SparkR works on R 3.1+. Otherwise, SparkR may use some
new features of latest R versions (for example, 3.2+) but not available in
versions like 3.1.

But I won't object bumping up the supported R version if needed:)

Yeah I think the point about having 3.1.1 installed elsewhere might be useful
as a strategy for testing / deployment. That way we can change 1 build (or add
a new build ?) to use that R version and if all looks fine we can then swap
things.

[~shaneknapp] Lets chat more tomm. I like the idea of trying out the build on
a VM. I can also try to see what the necessary packages are and see how to
build them for this specific R version.

the current version of R on our workers is:
R version 3.2.1 (2015-06-18) -- "World-Famous Astronaut"

my basic requirements for the workers are:

* keep the absolute minimum versions of any software package on the system
* don't build from source unless absolutely, mission-critically necessary
* see both points above :)

things go from "really easy" to "starting to get complicated" when
installing things from source and managing them in a build
environment.

also note that our entire staging environment is gone due to fire, and
we'll have to be doing some testing on live builds and systems. those
replacement systems might not make it to us before december... now
we're getting from "starting to get" to "actually" complicated.

i sit about 10' from [~shivaram] and we had a quick chat about this
today and we'll be following up tomorrow... i'll also compile some R
versions in a VM and see how well they play together. we'll explore
this from many angles. :)

[~shivaram] and i are looking in to this right now. backporting the jenkins
workers will be a project, with (potentially) a couple of days of downtime as
my staging instance is gone and i'll need to test on the live jenkins (don't
ask -- datacenter fire a month and a half ago).

if we do go w/3.1.1, here's what we'll need to do:
* wipe all vestiges of R and friends from the jenkins workers
* compile 3.1.1 from source, create an rpm and dist to all workers

+1 for this request. Or we can update the supported R version to a newer
version, but anyway, the version used in Jenkins should be same as the lowest
