[jira] [Commented] (SPARK-5676) License missing from spark-ec2 repo

I agree that spark-ec2 has less to do with Mesos than even Spark itself does.
After graduating from the incubator, Mesos lives at github.com/apache/mesos and
the remaining projects under the mesos github org are mostly Mesos frameworks
or other Mesos ecosystem components. To be honest, spark-ec2 is the only one
that doesn't fit into that category.

While we are happy to continue hosting spark-ec2 under the Mesos repo, even
adding new Collaborators with Write access as needed, it probably makes sense
to transfer ownership of the repo to a Spark or Berkeley-owned github org. Just
ping d...@mesos.apache.org if you need any assistance from us.

There is no LICENSE file or licence headers in the code in the spark-ec2
repo. Also, I believe there is no contributor license agreement notification
in place (like there is in the main spark repo).
It would be great to fix this (sooner better than later while contributors
list is small), so that users wishing to use this part of Spark are not in
 doubt over licensing issues.

Dumb question, I know, but what is the spark-ec2 repo you guys refer to? This
one? https://github.com/mesos/spark-ec2

The only repo for Spark is the main spark repo and it has all this license info
buttoned up. Other repos are not part of Spark.

It ended up in Mesos because [Spark itself came out of
Mesos|https://github.com/mesos/spark]. It's just history. The Mesos project
does not manage that repo at all.

Anyway, we should add a license for clarity sake since we accept contributions
there, regardless of whether those scripts are being distributed or not. I
think we agree on that. If you don't want an issue to track that here, that's
fine. No big deal either way, honestly.

Ah you're saying it isn't even part of Mesos. I see why there's not obviously a
good home in JIRA then. Can that repo just be managed as its own self-contained

Yes - it is managed as a self-contained project. However bugs in that project
are often experienced by Spark users, so we end up with issues created here. I
think filing these issues under the component EC2 is a fine thing to do as it
does affect Spark usage on EC2.

Yeah, AFAIK it has nothing to do with Mesos apart from that historical
connection.

I think having it stand alone using GitHub issues is fine, though the question
remains of what account it should fall under. Maybe spark-ec2/spark-ec2 (kinda
like [boot2docker/boot2docker|https://github.com/boot2docker/boot2docker])?
Anyway, this is a separate question from the one raised here. But yeah, it
should probably be moved at some point.

Just to clarify some things:

- Having a separate repo for cluster launch scripts was a conscious decision in
order to separate out release level changes from runtime settings (like Ganglia
config etc.)
- Though the repository exists in mesos/spark-ec2, AFAIK it is only used by the
Spark EC2 scripts. In fact we do track some bugs in that repo using issues in
the Spark JIRA.
- However from what I can see, I don't think the repository's license affects
the Spark project in anyway. It is not distributed as a part of any artifact we
build and EC2 support is in itself a strictly optional component. That said it
is good to have a LICENSE file, so we will add one.

[~srowen] - I don't think it's appropriate to resolve this as Not a Problem.
Sure, _technically_ the spark-ec2 scripts are out of the Spark repo, but we
effectively own them and have the power to fix this issue.

No one on the Mesos project AFAIK would know anything about spark-ec2, even
though the repo is indeed under their account. The [top
contributors|https://github.com/mesos/spark-ec2/graphs/contributors] are all
Spark people.

Eh? It's strictly an issue with code that Mesos hosts and distributes, and
Spark doesn't, and licensing matters to distribution. It should have a license
file, but the better place to track that is the Mesos project and its JIRA /
github. There is no actionable change in Spark to track. Of course it's
something that I expect people listening here happen to have the power to
resolve too. I also don't get why it ended up in Mesos but can that be fixed
then? make it its own repo?

Florian Verhein commented on SPARK-5676:

[~srowen] Yep, that's the one.

True. However it is the key part in providing the functionality of spark
deployment on EC2, which is documented quite prominently on the Spark site, and
the entry point of which is in the spark repo (ec2/spark_ec2.py). Bugs against
this functionality are therefore also filed here under EC2 module.
I assume the decision to have a separate repo was for implementation/design
reasons ( ?? ). Having spark_ec2.py cause this repo to be cloned and executed
on EC2 is a really nice way of providing the functionality. But that's an
assumption on my part and [~shivaram] would know best.

So from a user perspective, it would appear to be part of Spark (users may not
even be aware that part of the functionality lives in a separate repo).

Since it's a great way to get Spark running on EC2, it would be great to get
the licencing sorted out. This appears to be the best place to raise this issue.
